Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation.

HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?”

This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.

HOW ARE THE WINNERS CHOSEN? Each essay will be read by pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and his team. From there, the top 100 essays will be chosen which will then be narrowed down to the top 5. The 5 winners will be announced in January 2022 and will depart for this epic adventure in February 2022.

Toe ek in Gr 7 was, het ek altyd na die Ferrum eerstespan netbalwedstryde gaan kyk en ek het toe gesien wat se eer dit is om deel van die span te wees. Dis vir my baie spesiaal om nou ook deel te wees van die eerstespan, aangesien dit nog altyd ‘n groot droom was.

Wat maak dit spesiaal om vir Hoërskool Pionier se eerstespan te speel?

Dit is spesiaal, want ons het die meeste gees teenoor die ander spanne.

Wat was die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar?

Dit is die vermoë om aan te hou speel as ons nie die beste dag het nie.

Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die veld te gee?

Ons oefen gereeld en hard so ons is fiks en het ‘n paar vaardighede om te wys.

Wat was die sterkpunte van julle span die jaar?

Ons sterkpunt hierdie jaar is ons verhouding as ‘n span. Ons is regtig soos sussies en ons word nie kwaad of teleurgesteld in mekaar op die baan nie. Ons almal ondersteun mekaar en gee net ons beste tydens elke wedstryd.

Wat motiveer jou om Saterdag na Saterdag jou beste op die baan te gee?

Om die skool trots te maak en die skare se ondersteuning te hoor is die beste motivering vir enige sport.

Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal?

Ons weet nou al hoe speel almal en wat hulle volgende gaan doen.

Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar?

So hierdie jaar was wanneer ons teen Curro gespeel het. Toe die nuutste speler “Jenkins” die eerste doel van die jaar aangeteken het.

Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom?

JP is die grapgat in die span, want hy is die een wat snaakse goed sal doen of iets doen aan die coach wat almal sal laat lag in die span.

Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd?

Om bymekaar te kom en te bid vir die lekker wedstyd wat ons nou net klaar gespeel het.

Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was?

Dit sou ons “centre forward” wees, Izaak. Hy het na almal gekyk op die veld.

Julle span kom al 5 jaar saam. Wat maak julle span spesiaal?

Hoe maklik en hoe vining ons ‘n span geraak het. Dit is die eerste jaar dat ons eintlik saam speel en ons is reeds meer as net ‘n span. Ons is sussies!

Wat is julle span se grootste oomblik die afgelope 5 jaar?

Ons was onlangs in die Top 8 van die Puk-16 toernooi.

Wie is die grapgat in die span en hoekom?

Kamo, want maak nie saak wat op die baan gebeur het nie, sy sal altyd ‘n manier kry om ons almal te laat huil van die lag.

Wat is die lekkerste oomblik na `n wedstryd?

Om van die baan af te loop en te weet dat ek my beste gegee het. Maak nie saak wat die telling is nie, solank ek net weet ek het my beste gegee is daar geen rede om ongelukkig te wees nie.

Wie was jou matriekheld toe jy in Gr 8/Gr.9 was?

My eie sussie was in die eerstespan in Gr 11 en 12 toe ek Gr 8 en 9 was. Ek was so trots op haar gewees en het altyd op na haar opgekyk. Sy het elke wedstryd haar beste gegee en sy het altyd met ‘n glimlag van die baan afgekom. Sy het my gemotiveer en geïnspireer om, net soos sy, eendag vir Ferrum se eerstespan netbal te speel.

Group 3: Ali Mahnoor, Aziza, Camille, Nicole All learners qualified from Round 1 to proceed to Round 2 but only 2 groups were allowed to progress.

The learners in Round 2 scored 90% and 93% and only one Team was accepted for Round 3.

Well done to all the learners for an excellent attempt.

Congratulations to Bryce Ferris who was selected for the under 16 NKZN rugby team.

Netball trials were held at Huttenpark School. We are proud of the following learners who made it to the Amajuba District team: Nokuphiwa Thanjekwayo, Andiswa Kubheka, Zamokuhle Kunene, Siyamthanda Ndonga, Kwanele Mvelase, Sinemthemba Mncube, Londeka Khoza (Absent).

In a time when many have given up hope in our youth, we are so proud of our young learners who took time off on Youth Day to GIVE HOPE AND LOVE to others. Thank you NEWIES for giving to Morester, Home Meah and the homeless at the robots around town. YOU give us as adults reassurance for a brighter future. Aftrede wink vir Hoërskool Amajuba-staatmaker Elke skool het daardie spesiale mense wat soveel van hulself insit dat hul mettertyd déél word van die skool se wese. Vra jy vir enige oud-Jubie (en heel moontlik hul kinders ook!): “Watter onderwyser assosieer jy met Hoërskool Amajuba?”, is een van die antwoorde ongetwyfeld, Alet Lombard.

Mev. Lombard het die skool op 2 Julie 2021 vaarwel geroep om ‘n welverdiende aftrede te geniet na 30 jaar se getroue diens by Hoërskool Amajuba. As Huishoudkunde, en later Gasvryheidstudies-onderwyseres, het sy haar meesterlik van haar taak gekwyt om by vele van Amajuba se leerlinge ‘n liefde vir voedselvoorbereiding en hotelbestuur te kweek, en haar leerders kon spog met uitstekende resultate.

During her long career as Hospitality Studies teacher, Mrs. Lombard was in charge of many matric farewell functions and successfully hosted dozens of functions at the school, and you could always find her behind the scenes at fundraising projects like the Game Festival and Lekker Resies, where she directed the kitchen volunteers with great skill and endurance. She was always willing to help out without complaint, and is much-loved amongst her students and colleagues alike.

She was not only a formidable teacher, but also spent numerous hours next to the netball court as coach, training and encouraging her netball girls to excel. For many years, Mrs. Lombard was the guardian of the RCL-group, and learners knew that they could

always approach her for advice when needed. She also featured in quite a few school concerts over the years, dancing and performing with enthusiasm when she hit the stage.

Mev. Lombard laat ‘n groot leemte en sal voorwaar gemis word, maar die leerders en personeel van Hoërskool Amajuba wens haar alles van die beste toe, en vertrou dat sy haar goue jare saam met haar gesin en familie ten volle sal geniet!

Monument Primary Senior Speech and Drama Festival 2021 From the 31st May until 4th Monument hosted their annual Speech and Drama Festival. We had 159 participants ranging from Grade 4 to Grade 7. English 108 entries and 51 Afrikaans entries.

DUNDEE HIGH SCHOOL DHS Super Soccer League

Consumers Practical Bake Off Competition

The undying spirit of Dundee High School has once again shown its dominance. During such treacherous times filled with uncertainty, the children and staff of Dundee High School wanted to do something that would revive and revitalize the eager hearts and minds of the nation’s future. This happened through many different activities - one of which is the Hoërskool Dundee High School Super League.

A total of five internal soccer teams organised by the eager children took part in the preliminary rounds of the league. To make things easier and much more interesting, the teams were given household names which resonate best with the grades and personalities of the hopeful athletes and their style of play. The team names were Royal AM (Grade 8) the rookies of the school, Arsenal (Grade 9) for their massive 2 touch and interesting style of play, Leeds United (Grade 10) for their undying counter attack football while being vulnerable in defence, Amazulu FC (Grade 11 Zulu class) well the reason for that team name sort of explains itself and lastly West Ham United (Grade 11B) well let’s just say these players really know their football on paper, FIFA and on the field.

The league started with a match between Arsenal and Amazulu FC, and what an opener of a game it was, the formidable talent of the grade 9 side (Arsenal) showed moments of great talents but to their demise they lost to the more experienced side of the day which was Amazulu FC winning 2-1. Just to highlight a few great moments throughout the league, one will never forget the undying sportsmanship portrayed by learners especially to players being injured and hurt through their love of the game, this shows that the cohort of learners in Hoërskool Dundee High School stand by the virtues and values which the school stands for, indeed a small school with a great heart. The season’s reached its long awaited ending which results in the bottom team Grade 8 (Royal AM) being knocked out and therefore not participating in the knockout stages of the tournament. Through to the finals is an unexpected Grade 9 (Arsenal) side which beat Grade 10 (Leeds United) on penalties 4-1 to cement their place in the Super League final. They await the victor between West Ham United and Amazulu FC as they will battle it out for the main prize. All the best to all teams.

The school management and staff have played their part in ensuring that learners are not only educated and solidified academically, but recreational abilities and talents are also realised even in such difficult times.
