Die Canon Kwagga Junior Rugbyweek Hoërskool Outeniqua bied weer aan, die Canon Kwagga Junior Rugbyweek vir o/14 en o/15 rugbyspanne aan. Die week word sedert 1995 aangebied, en het gegroei tot sekerlik die grootste junior rugbyweek in die land. Hierdie jaar gaan daar 40 spanne deelneem. Veral die o/14 spanne wat deelneem verteenwoordig die top rugbyskole in Suid-Afrika. Dit beteken dat hier ongeveer 1 000 leerders, asook afrigters en ouers in George saamtrek vir hierdie sportweek, wat ook ‘n lekker finansiële inspuiting vir die dorp is. Heerlike ontbyte en middagetes kan ook geniet word tydens die wedstryde by Outeniqua se eie restaurant, die KWAGGA CUISINE. Toegang is R10 per volwassene per dag. Hoërskool Outeniqua wil hiermee ook baie dankie sê vir CANON GEORGE, ons hoofborg van die rugbyweek. Sonder hulle sou hierdie toernooie nie kon plaasvind nie.

Kwagga Week
Warrick Wayne Gelant has gone full circle in the landscape of South African rugby. Born and raised in Knysna in the Southern Cape, Gelant attended the very prestigious Outeniqua High School in George. He represented Tukkies in the 2014 Varsity Cup edition. Currently contracted to the Bulls, Gelant played for the Junior Boks, SA Schools team and also represented the Springbok Sevens in a few HSBC Sevens Series tournaments. Let’s take a few steps back and walk the journey with Warrick, from his U14 days until his first Springbok Test Cap against Italy on 25 November 2017. Gelant does speak fondly of his time at Outeniqua and the enormous influence that his high school career has had on his life, both on and off the field. “My best memories at Outeniqua was my first year when we as the U14 rugby team were undefeated for the year,” Gelant told Awsum News when asked about his high school rugby career. “Our first team ended second in the country in 2013 and that was pretty special as well. These two years were my most special years at Outeniqua.” He not only played rugby but also was a star on the first cricket team. “The other sport that I also enjoyed at school was cricket. I played first team cricket in every age group throughout my time at Outeniqua.” So many South African rugby players that sign professional contracts at a young age find themselves at wit’s end when injury strikes. They do not have a fall-back when injured or even when they call it quits on their careers, but Gelant balanced his school work and rugby. Setting a good example for so many young rugby players, Gelant believes that getting an education is important. “I focussed on my academic work very much, I had obtained an exemption which allowed me to get university access. Mr Martin Oosthuizen has been my biggest influence and motivator during my entire high school career. I will be eternally grateful to him.” Outeniqua High School host the annual Kwagga Rugby Week, set to take place between 29 March and 2 April at Outeniqua. This is one of the country’s longest standing U14 & U15 rugby tournaments. Established in 1995, the rugby competition sees over 20 of South Africa’s best of the best descend onto George to do battle with high school rugby elites. Gelant backs his alma mater’s rugby week completely and says that the week is one of the biggest platforms that launched his career. “Kwagga Week has had a massive impact on my rugby, it is one of the best junior rugby tournaments in the country. It was also the year where we were undefeated on the U14 side, we won all six games. I have very fond memories of this week. I will cherish these moments forever as some helped boost my confidence at a very early age.”

AWSUM News verander die wêreld van skoolnuus na ‘n kreatiewe omgewing Die grootste skolenetwerk in die land is pas bekendgestel waar skolenuus 24/7 gedeel word op ‘n sentrale nuusportaal, naamlik www. awsumnews.co.za. Meer as 1 700 skole landswyd is reeds deel van dié netwerk en die nuus word per streek gelaai om elke skool nasionale en plaaslike blootstelling te gee. Skole is opsoek na blootstelling buiten hul gemeenskap, en ouers en oud-skoliere het die behoefte om nuusgebeure op skoolvlak te volg, daarom was die stap om nuus digital te deel die volgende logiese stap. Die skole stuur direk die nuus soos wat dit gebeur, dus is ons nuus relevant en betroubaar.
