Message from King Edward VII School

Message from Standard Bank

On this 16th anniversary of our Easter Rugby and Hockey Festival, proudly supported by our primary sponsor, Standard Bank, it again gives us much pleasure in hosting this much anticipated favourite calendar event. Our welcome extends, to all the following: • the 36-participating senior and junior rugby teams, as well as senior hockey teams, from a broad geographic spread of renowned schools in our Country • accompanying coaches, medical teams and support staff • our generous sponsors without whom this spectacle could not be staged • and finally, the many old boy groups and spectators, anticipating the unique spectacle that schoolboy sport always so passionately embodies The essence of our Festival is to provide the players with the opportunity to showcase their skills, without the hindrance of the typical pressures that so often play out in the normal league season – it is in this spirit of enjoying the freedom `to play and to entertain`, that we encourage all our visitors to savour the special moments that our Festival always delivers. Acknowledgment of the immense planning and execution of logistics in ensuring the success of the Festival, is owed to a large group of volunteers including: • Festival Director Derron van Eeden, Chairperson Neil Darroch and his everwilling Committee comprising parents, old boys, friends of the School and staff • Director of Sport, Eugene Marx, together with numerous School staff and coaches who provide support in a variety of ways • Medical support professionals, Dr Peter Baxter, Physiotherapist Brendan During, the 1st Aid Team, and attending Chiropractors • Facilities Manager Anthon Keyter and his team who ensure quality playing facilities prevail • The Golden Lions Referees for sacrificing of their personal time In closing we invite you to `Share the Spirit` of our unique Festival. We again thank our primary sponsor Standard Bank, together with the other contributing sponsors, for exceptionally generous support.

Headmaster, DAVID LOVATT

KES EASTER RUGBY & HOCKEY OVERVIEW The Easter Rugby and Hockey Festival was first staged in 2002 as a key event in celebrating King Edward VII School`s Centenary. It was originally planned as a once off festival but because of the huge success it turned out to be, it became an integral component of the school`s annual calendar. The Festival has a unique `family` flavour and is considered an annual pilgrimage for multitudes of old boys, and friends of the School. Senior rugby and hockey teams, as well as enthusiastic primary school teams showcase their skills over a period of 3 days. Visitors and supporters will be provided with a feast of top class schoolboy sport.

This world-class school sporting event is probably, by far, one of the country’s most anticipated. We all know that, in South Africa, the one thing that unites us as a nation regardless of our different backgrounds is sport. When we are all united by sport, it doesn’t matter who you are and where you come from, we are just all excited to be there. Once again, Standard Bank is honoured to partner with King Edward VII School as a major sponsor of the school’s 16th Rugby and Hockey Festival, one of the most popular events on South Africa’s sporting calendar. Since its inception almost two decades ago, the festival has grown into an event not to be missed. Throughout it all, KES has been a respectful, dedicated and, often, triumphant participant. At Standard Bank, we’re always committed to coming along for the journey as people prepare and experience their NEXT, whether in sport, business or personally. Standard Bank sees this festival as an opportunity to not only support and nurture the leaders of the future as they prepare for their NEXT, but also to show our clients that we respect and honour their personal decision to bank with us. These sporting partnerships allow us to engage with our clients in increasingly creative, interactive and personal ways. In turn, this lets us demonstrate that we hear and see your needs and we want to come along for the journey. At Standard Bank, we are committed to adapting a number of solutions that are designed to move you, your children and your business forward to your NEXT. Thanks goes to the coaches, parents, organisers and teachers who made this event possible. Our congratulations also go to all the young sportsmen who are competing. Standard Bank urges you to give your best for your team and for yourself. We also wish all participating schools the best of luck and health. Have fun, play hard and enjoy the true South African spirit of unity and sportsmanship.

OLD BOYS FROM

KING EDWARD VII SCHOOL King Edward VII School is recognized throughout South Africa as a school with a proud history, illustrious Old Boys and continues to be a flag bearer of tradition and old school values. The King Edward VII School of today is as good a school as it has been in its history. There are many old boys plying their trade as key sportsmen, herewith just a few:

Springboks HM Forrest Henry Martin “Skaap” Forrest was the first old boy to represent the Boks. He played 7 tour matches on the 1931-32 tour to the British Isles and Ireland. Joe van Niekerk (1998) Big Joe played 52 tests for the Springboks in all and was SA Rugby Player of the Year (2002). The huge, athletic loose forward also captained South Africa at U21 level. Joe van Niekerk represented Golden Lions (2001-2002 & 2008), Western Province (20032007) and capped his career off at Toulon (from 2009 to 2013). Bryan Habana (2000) Bryan Gary Habana

became the 4th Bok in history to earn more than 100 caps! Interestingly Brian also ended up at Toulon, France (since 2013). He previously represented Western Province (2010-2013), Blue Bulls (2005-2009) and Golden Lions (2004). He has been awarded SARU Player Of The Year: 2005, 2007 and 2012 and the International Rugby Board Player of the Year: 2007. Malcolm Marx (2012) Malcolm Marx made his debut for the Springboks in 2016. He was rewarded with 3 awards following a sublime season in 2017, including being named the SA Rugby Player of the Year. The 23-year-old star from the Lions was also named the SA Rugby Young Player (Under-23) and Super Rugby Player of the Year for 2017. Marx, who retained the Young Player of the Year award he won in 2016, is the first player since Ashwin Willemse in 2003 to win the prestigious SA Rugby Player and Young Player of the Year Awards in the same season.

BlitzBoks Kevin Foote (1998)

Kevin William Foote played Reds in 96,97,98. He captained in 97 and played Craven week flank. He then coached UCT to a Varsity Cup win and is now at the Western Force in the coaching team.

Internationals RM Thomas (2000) – Wales In 2006 Rhys Thomas made his debut for the Wales national rugby union team and earned 7 Caps over his career. Daniel Bell Old Boy Daniel Bell (Class of 2012) was selected to the SA Men’s Hockey Team to compete in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Australia later this year. AWSUM News is changing the world of school news The biggest school network in Africa has been launched, where school news is shared 24/7 via a central news portal, namely www.awsumnews.co.za. More than 1 800 schools are part of this network and the news is loaded per region to provide each school with national and regional exposure – free of charge. Schools wanted more exposure outside of their direct community and parents wanted to read about school news on a central hub, making it the logical next step. The schools submit their news directly, making our news relevant and audience specific. This school news initiative is designed to integrate with our multiplatform strategy for schools – a first of its kind worldwide.

AWSUM Radio, the first radio station exclusively for SA schools and a pioneer in the industry; and AWSUM News, the 24/7 school news website. “It is our responsibility to constantly renew to give school and their learners the exposure they deserve”, says Durandt van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer at the TieMedia Group that is managing the AWSUM brand. “AWSUM News is an easy-to-read website where parents, learners, teachers, and grandparents can read the latest about schools in the region, as well as food articles and recipes, news clips on the latest movies, and much more.”

These platforms include: AWSUM Newspaper, a monthly publication in 8 regions countrywide; AWSUM App for Schools, for mobile communication between school, parents and learners;

Van Zyl invites all schools to send their daily school news for placement and include any sport (internal and external), cultural and academic achievements as they happen. For more information send us a mail to awsumnews@tiemedia.co.za.
