Pieter-Steph du Toit The big 24-year-old lock Pieter-Steph du Toit won the coveted South African Rugby Player of the Year award last year, following a brilliant and consistent performance in the green and gold in a difficult season for Springbok rugby. In the words of former Bok assistant coach, Alan Solomons: “Du Toit is a world-class player and a phenomenal athlete. South African rugby is extremely blessed with fantastic young locks from which to select, such as Du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert. Du Toit is an enormous man, yet is very athletic and wellcoordinated. Moreover, he scrums superbly, is a terrific lineout forward and is an intelligent footballer. In my book, Du Toit is the complete rugby player.” Q: How did it feel to be announced SARU Rugby Player of the Year? What did the award mean to you? What motivates you to give your best, game after game after game? A: It was an incredible honour to receive the award. I was overflowing with joy when the announcement was made. It was truly one of the biggest nights of my life – a dream come true! I wanted to give everyone who voted for me, a part of the trophy.
Q: Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing. A: I grew up on a farm Kloovenburg in the Boland. I was one of four boys, and we were all rather naughty. I loved the farm – I lived for it. I never wanted to go to school – I just wanted to be on the farm. I would sometimes get to school and then play sick, so that my mother could fetch me and take me home again. We often practised rugby in the mud, running through the sprayers on the field. We then jumped in the dam to get all the mud, but this meant I had to often sit in the boot of the car! Q: How do you think all this contributed to your rugby? A: Well, I think growing up on a farm has a lot of advantages. It is a much more active lifestyle, where we played outside a lot, but also worked hard. My brothers and I played a lot of rugby, and of course played rough! We had to carry around heavy things, and this advantage helped me a lot with the physical strength and stamina I have today.

Q: What was your first Rugby World Cup experience like, moving from the crushing defeat by Japan to the semi-finals against New Zealand? A: My overriding emotion after proceeding to the semi-finals by beating Wales in the quarterfinals was one of immense relief. This was a challenging match, with the lead changing seven times. We’ll always carry Japan with us throughout the World Cup as motivation. It’s something we never want to feel again and we say it before each game – we don’t want to feel that again. We’ve got to win each game. Q: You were in Grade 7 and your wife, Willemien, in Grade 8 when you met at school, but you only ‘got together’ after you finished school. Tell us a bit more about your own fairy tale. A: We trained athletics together at school. She visited the farm a lot while we were at school, but we lost contact for a while. We connected again after school, and the rest is history. We got married at the end of 2015.

Q: You are the grandson of legendary powerhouse prop Piet ‘Spiere’ du Toit, who represented South Africa as a tighthead prop between 1958 to 1961 and played in 14 tests, including in the series against the All Blacks in 1960, which the Boks won. What does this legacy mean to you? A: My grandfather having been a Springbok gave me lots of self-confidence and I believed in myself. He made it – so it was not impossible for me, too. I think genes also played a big role. I would have loved for him to see me play, especially in the World Cup.

On World Book Day, 2 March, they celebrated their love of reading by dressing up as their very favourite characters from books they loved the most. Amongst the guests there were Mr Strong, Dracula, Captain Underpants, Harry Potter, Bodyguard, Princess Diaries, Queen of Hearts, Goldilocks, Boy in a Dress, Zorro, Mind Craft, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dictionary, Alice in Wonderland, Nerd, Pippi Longstocking, Peter Pan and Little Red Riding Hood, who all came to pay their respects to the wonderful authors who made their lives so magical. Phew! What a day! They all had lots of fun and there were prizes for some. The End.

Die kompetisie was sterk en die skole was beduidend groter, maar Randburg eindig nogtans sewende en behou dus sy plek in die twee top groepe – Baie geluk aan Hoërskool Zwartkop wat in 2018 promofeer na groep een en welkom aan Hoërskool Nelspruit wat deel word van groep twee.

ST PETER’S BOYS PREP SCHOOL (t) 011 705 3423 (e) reception@stpeters.co.za Isematholeni Intern Programme creating South Africa’s teachers of tomorrow The name of our intern programme derives from a Zulu proverb, Inkunzi Isematholeni, which translates as ‘The bulls are amongst the calves’, meaning ‘Tomorrow’s leaders are amongst the youth’. The education crisis is a consequence not only of poor teaching performance, but also a shortage of teachers. In 2015, The Times reported that “there will be a severe shortage of teachers in the Foundation Phase by 2020 if the number of teaching graduates in that phase continues to fall.” St Peter’s recognised this need and started the Intern Programme in 1997, quickly establishing a sound track record of developing intern teachers. At present the school has 20 interns, allowing there to be
an intern in every class in the Foundation Phase from Grade 0 to 2. Once qualified, the graduates are encouraged to return to their communities as expert Early Childhood Development (ECD) educators to teach, motivate and inspire children to become the next economic-contributing citizens of South Africa. The programme is growing from strength to strength and prospective teaching students have the opportunity to apply for a full scholarship that includes academic fees towards a B.Ed 4-year degree, a small monthly stipend, and full-time daily in-theclassroom training to qualify as effective and motivated professionals. They attend workshops and have access to social and emotional mentoring.

It is imperative to encourage reading in children and, to this end, most schools go to lengths to make reading fun and enjoyable for pupils. ‘Book Dress-up Day’ was held at St Peter’s Girls School recently, in both the Junior and Senior Prep phases, and the girls and staff had much fun. The two librarians, Mrs Jenny Hugo and Mrs Zanele Mbatha, were instrumental in arranging these fun-filled days. The Junior Prep girls were given the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character and the Senior Prep girls dressed up as something that was related to food – found in either the title of a book or is mentioned in a book.
ST PETER’S COLLEGE (t) 011 807 5315 (e) info@stpeterscollege.co.za Big splash at Inter-High Swimming 2017 It was a bright and early start for the St Peter’s College swimming team on Wednesday, 1 March as we travelled to Ellis Park for the 2017 A league Inter-High gala. The atmosphere on the day was electric, both on the poolside and in the stands. Being the defending champions, we knew there was quite a lot of pressure on us to retain the trophy, but we also expected the competition to be extremely tough, which it was. St Peter’s showed their true fighting spirit right until the end, but congratulations to Northcliff High who pulled off a great victory. St Peter’s came second, Crawford Sandton third, Trinity House fourth and Fourways High fifth. It was a superb performance from the whole team, bringing home a number of medals: • Golds x 19 • Silvers x 4 • Bronze x 14

Plenty of team building took place and they returned ready and eager to lead the school throughout the course of 2017.
Swimming Bryanstonian swim stars, Megan and Rogan Shepherd, swam in the Gauteng School Trials. Rogan received a silver medal for 100m Fly and bronze for the 200m IM (Individual Medley) in the category for boys 16–17 years old. Megan received a gold medal for the 200m IM (Individual Medley) and silver for 50m Free Style in the category for girls 14–15 years old. The Gauteng team will be announced on 10 March 2017 and we wish Megan and Rogan the very best for this announcement. KES athletes bring home the medals at District D9 Meet Selected King Edward VII School elite athletes took part in the District D9 Championships at the Herman Immelman Stadium in Germiston on Monday, 27 February. 20 athletes took part and brought home 28 medals: • 18x gold medals • 9x silver medals • 1x bronze medals 17 Athletes qualify for Gauteng champs, competing in 28 events. All 1st and 2nd places qualify for Gauteng Champs (1011 March) at Germiston. Hurdles automatically qualify. We are very proud of our athletes who train so very hard for these well-deserved accolades. Northcliff High School takes first place at the A league Inter-High Gala It was a day of team spirit and tough competition, where Northcliff High competed against St Peters College (2016 winners), Crawford College Sandton, Trinity House and Fourways High School in the A league Inter-High gala on 1 March, at Ellis Park Swimming Pool. Over the many years Northcliff has won the A league Inter-High trophy a total of 15 times – a victory more than any other school and this year we took home the trophy with 108 points ahead. Along with the first place win in the gala, Northcliff High School’s cheerleaders also took first place for best dance and second place for team spirit. We are immensely proud of our students who worked and trained hard for the gala. A special thank you as well to our teachers, staff and parents, who have also all worked hard, and their tireless contribution to the event.
