BOKSIES MAAK ‘N VERSKIL!
Watter verskil kan ‘n 5c, 10c of 20c muntstuk nou eintlik maak, mag jy dalk vra? Dit is kleingeld wat ons beursies net vol maak en soms so lastig kan wees. Dit is aanvanklik seker moeilik om te glo dat ‘n paar skamele muntstukke ‘n verskil kan maak, maar die Nasionale Instituut vir Dowes in Worcester het met die hulp van skole in die Wes-Kaap, bewys dat dit wel ‘n verskil maak in die lewens van Dowes en persone met gehoorverlies. Die NID se boksie-projek (Change 4 Change) is ‘n wenner! Sedert die projek se ontstaan in 2009 het dit NID se stoutste verwagtinge oortref met meer as R 100 000 wat per jaar ingevorder word deur die volmaak van klein Change 4 Change spaarboksies. Die projek word met ope arms ontvang deur skole wat ‘n verskil wil maak. Leerders maak ‘n reuse verskil met hulle bydraes en leer reeds op ‘n vroeë stadium in hulle lewens wat doofheid is en wat die probleme is wat Dowes in hul alledaagse lewens ervaar. Deur deelname aan die projek word leerders beloon met die wete dat hulle kleingeld ’n groot verskil in die lewens van Dowes by NID maak. Die Nasionale Instituut vir Dowes (NID) lewer reeds vir 133 jaar ‘n omvattende diens aan Dowes en persone met gehoorverlies regoor Suid Afrika. Dienste by NID sluit in die versorging van meervoudig-gestremde Dowes; twee tehuise vir bejaarde Dowes; ‘n Kollege vir Beroepsopleiding vir Dowes; ‘n Teologiese kweekskool vir die opleiding van Dowe predikante en pastore; ‘n Akademie vir steundienste aan Dowes en die publiek, en ‘n Dowe kerklike gemeenskap met twee Gemeentes vir Dowes in Worcester en Bellville. NID en AWSUM nooi skole, groepe, besighede en individue wat vanjaar aan die boksie-projek wil deelneem om Hannerie Swart by 023 342 5555 of e-pos pa.deputy@nid.org.za te kontak. Why is the Clock Tower yellow?
The City of Cape Town has been designated the World Design Capital® (WDC) 2014 and is the fourth city to hold this appointment and marks the first for the African continent. What does this mean for students interested in design? This title is awarded to cities based on their commitment to use design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development. The WDC has become more than just a project or a programme. Today, it is a global movement and serves to acknowledge that design can, and does, impact the quality of human life. It is a programme that brings together the people and the processes; the problems and the solutions; the gritty and the pretty.
Cape Town has welcomed WDC 2014 with streetpole flags and already wide publicity in all the popular newspapers & magazines. At the Victoria & Albert Waterfront which is a very popular tourist and local destination for all Cape Townians, the Clock Tower has been painted yellow and will function as an information hub for WDC 2014 showcasing interesting projects and demonstrating transformative design through our messages.

Life Style Kyk Ma…geen grond! Hidroponiese tuinmaak is deesdae die in ding, maar wat beteken dit regtig? Hidroponika is afgelei van die Griekse woord hidro, wat beteken “water” en ponos, wat beteken “arbeid of water-werk”. Dus, Hidroponika beteken groeiende plante in water in plaas van grond. Hidroponiese tuinmaak is so eenvoudig soos gewone tuinmaak. Beide van hulle noodsaak voldoende lig, water, temperatuur, lig en humiditeit, maar met hidroponiese tuine, word geen grond gebruik nie. Binnenshuise hidroponiese tuinmaak is nie so moeilik nie en plante reageer goed op hierdie metode van groei. Dit is een van die belangrikste oorwegings in hidroponika tuinmaak, aangesien dit die plante onderhou. In`n hidroponiese tuin, moet die plante meer as drie keer ‘n dag natgemaak word. Dit word gewoonlik gedoen met behulp van ‘n pomp en tydskakelaar. Plaas jou plante iewers waar hulle genoeg lig kan ontvang. Anders kan kunsmatige lig gebruik word. Humiditeit is ook goed, want wanneer die kamer se temperatuur styg, sal die lug in staat wees om die voldoende hoeveelheid vog in jou plante te hou. Voordele van `n hidroponiese tuin: - `n Hidroponiese stelsel kan ten volle outomaties wees, omdat dit watergebaseerd is. - Jy hoef geen grond te grawe of onkruid uit te trek nie. - Die water kan weer gebruik word om vermorsing te voorkom. - Met hidroponiese tuine, kan ‘n uitstekende opbrengs van gehalte plante maklik bereik word. - Plante kan die hele jaar met hidroponiese tuine gekweek word, eerder as seisoenaal soos die tradisionele metodes. - Jou plante sal baie vinniger as in die grond groei. Beat the heat
High temperatures are forcing South Africans to get ‘sun smart’. The heat wave currently being felt throughout South Africa has given rise to a number of cases of heat related conditions. “Exposure to high temperatures or doing physical activity in hot or humid weather can lead to hyperthermia, which is elevated body temperature caused by the body’s inability to dissipate heat,” says Dr Jacques Snyman, clinical adviser for Resolution Health.

Spending 11 hours in the office could be the death of you A recent study by the University College London (UCL) found that those spending more than 11-hours at work have a 67% increased risk of having a heart attack when compared to those working an average 8-hour day. A separate study undertaken by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found that .these workers are also twice as likely to suffer from major depression with a 2.5 higher chance of suffering at least one adverse depressive episode after six years. Already South Africa is regarded as the 3rd most workaholic nation in the world with a 2011 study by Ipsos Global and Reuters finding that a mere 47% of the country’s working population take their necessary vacation days. Resolution Health Medical Scheme warns that with a growing body of evidence irrevocably proving the link between long working hours and potentially life-threatening health complications, it becomes clear that corporate South Africa must take an increasing amount of responsibility for the health of their employees. These employees are more likely to ignore obvious health warning signs to avoid taking a day off and are less likely to seek medical advice, believing that the problem will simply disappear in time.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: Profuse sweating, muscle cramps and body aches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness and pale skin. “If you or anyone else shows symptoms of heat exhaustion it is vital you get out of the heat, drink plenty of water, remove any tight or unnecessary clothing, and take a cool shower or bath to cool yourself down. If these measures fail to provide relief within half an hour then you may be experiencing heat stroke,” warns Dr Snyman. Heat stroke Heat stroke occurs when the body’s core temperature increases beyond 40 degrees Celsius. Unlike heat exhaustion, heat stroke is a medical emergency and if not treated properly, it can cause an individual to slip into a coma or suffer organ failure. The most characteristic sign of heat stroke is an absence of sweating. Other symptoms include: dry flushed skin; high body temperature; rapid pulse; trouble breathing; confusion and disorientation; hallucinations; unusual and sometimes aggressive behaviour; seizures; coma. Tips Tips to avoid getting dehydrated or suffering from heat exhaustion and heat stroke during the high temperatures currently being experienced around the country: • Try stay indoors if possible or keep to the shade when forced to be outdoors. • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

Sout kan ook probleme veroorsaak soos osteoperosis, nierversaking en selfs maagkanker. Indien jy in beheer is van julle huishouding se kosvoorbereiding, maak seker jy verminder die hoeveelheid sout wat jy gebruik en dink twee keer voordat jy vir iemand vra om die soutpot aan te gee. Brein, wonderlike Brein! Die brein, ‘n wonder-orgaan. Hy weeg ongeveer 1,4kg en bestaan uit 100 biljoen senuweeselle, 1000 biljoen proteïnverleggings, 2,8 miljoen pynsensitiewe strukture, 500 000 gevoelverklikkers en 200 000 temperatuursensors. Nie net kan hy inligting vinniger verwerk as ‘n rekenaar nie, hy stel ons in staat om ons omgewing waar te neem, emosies te ervaar en ons gedrag te kies. Hoewel die brein ‘n groot gedeelte van die liggaam outomaties beheer (hartklop, asemhaling, ens), is jy egter in beheer van ‘n groot deel van die brein! ‘n Wonder element van die brein is juis die feit dat hy noodwendig reageer op stimmulasie of op die afwesigheid daarvan. Celebrate St Paddy’s day Every year on 17 March, Ireland celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day, a cultural and religious holiday that dates back to the 9th century and pays homage to the nation’s most prominent patron saint. While it does have spiritual roots, today, the occasion is largely used as an excuse for Irish fun and has been eagerly adopted by a host of countries outside of the shamrock state, South Africa included. The AWSUM Kombuis shares two Irish recipes to celebrate St Paddy’s.
Irish Cream Chocolate Mousse

Ingredients: 1 package JELL-O Chocolate Instant Pudding 1 cup cold milk ¼ cup Irish cream liqueur 2 cups whipped cream ½ cup fresh raspberries 30 g BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, shaved

Beat pudding mix, milk and liqueur in medium bowl with whisk 2 min. Stir in 1 and a half cups whipped cream. Spoon into 6 dessert dishes. Refrigerate 20 min. Top with remaining whipped cream, berries and chocolate.
Fill footed mug or a mug with hot water to preheat it, then empty. Pour piping hot coffee into warmed glass until it is about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream by pouring gently over back of spoon. Serve hot.

Somerset College T20 Festival The annual Somerset College T20 Festival was held on Sunday 23 February with Wynberg Boys High School, Paarl Gymnasium and Paul Roos joining Somerset College as participants. The first fixtures were College against neighbours Paul Roos and Paarl Gym took on Wynberg. Wynberg scored freely on the Siebrits Oval and scored 180 runs. Paarl Gym lost early wickets and were always on the back foot in their run chase and fell well short. Somerset College won the toss and bowled first against Paul Roos. Some good disciplined bowling and fantastic fielding restricted Paul Roos to 121 in their 20 overs. Some disciplined bowling and tight in fielding did not allow College to tick the scoreboard over and with wickets falling at regular intervals Paul Roos eventually ended up winning the game comfortably by 30 odd runs. In the 3rd / 4th play-off on the Siebrits Oval Somerset College took on Paarl Gym for the second time that weekend. Paarl scored freely getting to a competitive score of
147. Elliot Moses (29) hit some powerful sixes to gives us a good start with the help of Phillip Carsten (17) but soon went out leaving the College needing 10 an over. Marcus Nel (40*) & William Sendin (42*) kept College in the game and took College home with four balls to spare. It was exciting to watch and nail biting all the way with some huge risk being taken by College batters who managed to play out of their comfort zone. College won by 5 wickets. In the 1st /2nd playoff Paul Roos batted first scoring 131 runs. In the field, Paul Roos bowled a tight line and length and created lots of pressure with sharp fielding forcing 4 run outs from the Wynberg batsmen. Wynberg were bowled out for 111 thus giving victory to Paul Roos by 20 runs.
The Best Batsman went to Kyle Verreynne of Wynberg with 83 runs in his two knocks and best bowler went to Nick Scott, also from Wynberg for 6 wickets in his two games. Thank you to D&P Cricket for their sponsorship of gloves for the batting and fielding prizes.
The Somerset College Jazz Band
Performed at the annual High School Band Slam which was held at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Friday 21 February. The winners of this competition will be notified in March.

Vuyolwethu Joboda, grade 10 learner at Hottentots-Holland High School, and Beata Green, head girl at Hottentots-Holland High School, were the judges at the Mr & Ms Valentine Competition 2014 at the Emmanuel School in Gordon’s Bay. During 2013 Beata was crowned as the BFG (Born Free Generation) Miss Teenager SA 2013 in Johannesburg. Beata will represent South Africa in Guatemala, South America at the Miss Teenager Universe Competition during August 2014.

Vuyolwethu Joboda, grade 10 learner at Hottentots-Holland High School, was the 1st Princess at the Ms Teen Tyger Fest 2014. This is a charity event aimed to raise funds for the Tygerberg Hospital.

Tydens die Interskole Atletiekbyeenkoms tussen die Hoërskool Hottentots-Holland, Hoërskool Parel Vallei en die Hoërskool Strand, het Chadé Levendal (HHH) ‘n nuwe rekord in die 110m hekkies vir S.o.17 opgestel. Die ou rekord was 15,0 sek. en die nuwe rekord is 14,9 sek.

Matthew Noemdoe, o.17-atleet van die Hoërskool Hottentots-Holland, het ‘n nuwe rekord in die 400m hekkies vir seuns o.17 opgestel. Die ou rekord was 59,6 sek. en die nuwe rekord is 58,5 sek.
Die leerders en personeel van die Hoërskool Hottentots-Holland het die skool se 84ste verjaardag behoorlik gevier! Elkeen van die 1 361 “verjaardaggaste” het ‘n heerlike kolwyntjie ontvang. Op die foto is v.l.n.r.: Johandré Labuschagne, Leoni van Zyl en Marcell de Ridder. Johandré was die hoofseun van HHH gedurende 2004, Leoni matrikuleer gedurende 2000 en Marcell matrikuleer gedurende 2005. Hulle is nou almal op die personeel by HHH asook Kevin Dockrall, matriek 1974. Kevin was ongelukkig nie beskikbaar nie.

Horse Riding Zahn Bosman took part in the 8th German Friendship Horse Riding Competition towards the end of 2013. This competition draws young riders from all over the world who are connected through their love of horses.

Chante Daniels was selected to participate in the scholar section of the 4th SA International Ballet Competition, held at the Arts Cape Theatre in Cape Town. There were 67 competitors who qualified to dance. Participating countries included: USA, Belgium, Switzerland, Kenya, Cuba, South Korea, China, Brazil, South Africa, Japan & Canada. The panel of judges were from New York, Zurich, Australia, China, Korea, Holland, Uruguy & Cuba. The finalists in their section were 3 South Africans, ( 2 girls from Cape Town and 1 boy from Johannesburg ). Both Chante and the other South African girl that were placed under the top 6 girls in their section are full time scholars. Most of the competitors are vocational students.

Die 4M-Atletiekbyeenkoms is met groot sukses deur Bloemhof op 20 Februarie skoollied en ‘n by Coetzenburg aangebied. Die dag se verrigtinge is afgeskop met die optogte kreet te doen. Die deur die onderskeie skole waarna elke skool die geleentheid gekry het om hulle Bloemhoffers was onberrispelik en die leerders het tot reg aan die einde van die byeenkoms die gees op die pavilljoen hoog gehou! Die Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof en hulle broerskool, Paul Roos, het op 10 Februarie saamgespan tydens die jaarlikse Prestige-atletiekbyeenkoms wat in ‘n bloedige Paarl gehou is. Hulle het meegeding teen Paarl Gim en Paarl Boys’ en Girls’ High en het aan die einde van die aand met meer as 60 punte die naaste skool geklop om as wenners uit die stryd te tree. Bloemroos het nie net die byeenkoms gewen nie, maar het ook die trofees vir onderskeidelik die beste o.15- en o.17-span van die dag ingepalm.

Bloemhof by Gerrie Berner-tennistoernooi
Die 1ste tennisspan het 13-16 Februarie in die Paarl aan die Gerrie Berner Toernooi deelgeneem. Hulle het kompeteer teen Afrikaans Hoër Meisies, Eunice, Oranje, Waterkloof en Stellenbosch Hoër. Met ons nr 1-speler, Rouxanne Janse van Rensburg, buite aksie, en 3 matrieks wat verlede jaar die span verlaat het, het hierdie jong span ‘n groot taak in uiterste weersomstandighede met entoesiasme aangepak. Met elke wedstryd het die spelers tot aan die einde baklei en op Donderdag en Vrydag is die wedstryde eers klaargemaak toe dit donker geraak het. Die toernooi is op ‘n rondomtalie-stelsel beslis en elke stel het ‘n punt getel. Oranje was die welverdiende wenners met 108 punte. Waterkloof was 2de(82), Stellenbosch 3de(82) en Bloemhof 4de(78). Slegs 3 punte (stelle) het dus posisie 2–4 geskei.

HSS was bevoorreg om as een van die min gasheerskole in die Wes Kaap te wees vir hierdie koor uit Bavaria, Duitsland.

HSS het ‘n baie suksesvolle atletiek interskole teen HS Jan van Riebeeck en HS Charlie Hofmeyer agter die rug. HSS het die atletiekbeker gewen en die volgende atlete het toekennings ontvang:
Stellenbosch, het einde verlede jaar aan Suid-Afrika se Duitse Olimpiade deelgeneem. Die uitslae is bekendgemaak en Carma het met ‘n gemiddeld van 91 % die 11de plek landwyd behaal. Sy is deur die PAD uitgenooi om aan die “international SCholarship Programme for Excellent German Learners” deel te neem. Die Program vind van 25 Junie tot 25 Julie in Duitsland plaas en word deur die Duitse regering gefinansier. Carman sal, saam met leerders uit altesame 90 lande, vir twee weke skool bywoon en by ‘n gasfamilie gehuisves word. Vir die laaste twee weke van haar besoek sal sy oa Koln, Bonn, Munchen, Hamburg en Berlin, besoek. Baie geluk, Carma!

PRG Old Boy makes it to World Cup Final Coenraad van Zyl Justin Dill (Matric 2012) will become the first ever Paul Roos cricketer to play in a World Cup final, when South Africa take on Pakistan in the U/19 Cricket World Cup final tomorrow (Saturday) in Dubai. Dill, who captained Paul Roos’s 1st cricket team in 2012, has been one of the team’s stand-out performers throughout the tournament. In the first game against the West Indies he was honoured with the Man of the Match award after making 34 not out with the bat, clinching a run-out with the very first ball of the West Indies innings and picking up two wickets for 18 runs. In the other games he claimed four wickets against both Zimbabwe and a very strong Afganistan team to reach the semi-finals against Australia, after which they won by 80 runs.
Super-Hotrod: Paul Rooser earns his national colours Paul Rooser Bryan Grimbeek (15) was selected for the SA Team to compete in the Super-Hotrod class against drivers from the UK and Namibia in a Tri-Nations International Dirt Oval event on 15 February. At 15, Bryan was the youngest competitor, with the average age of competitors being 42. His father, Wade Grimbeek (ex-SA Champion in this class) was also part of the SA Team. Bryan came 2nd overall, and was the first South African across the line. Bryan is the youngest South African to ever earn his National (Protea) Colours for Dirt Oval racing. The event was held under the auspices of MSA (Motorsport South Africa) – the only federation in South Africa recognised by SASCOC and the Department of Sports and Recreation – and FIA, the international controlling body for Motorsport. The International Series held at Tygerberg Raceway was opened by Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport for Western Cape, Dr Ivan Meyer, and the Director for the FIA, Mr Steve
Miller. Final Results were: 1st:Jan Everson (Namibia), 2nd: Bryan Grimbeek (SA), 3rd: Kym Weaver (UK, former World Champion). Bryan came first out of the South African competitors. There were 21 drivers competing.

Die span het op Vrydag 21 Februarie teen Affies op die Oval te staan gekom. Paul Roos het eerste gekolf en 198 op die telbord gesit, met Paul Barnard wat reeds nog ‘n 50-tal bereik het. Affies het ‘n baie goeie begin gehad en was in ‘n stadium 120 vir 4 sonder dat die lopietempo ‘n probleem was. Die manne het egter baie karakter gewys en hard teruggeveg om Affies met 22 lopies te klop. Die Sondag na die wedstryd het ons eerste span in die Somerset College T20-toernooi deelgeneem en vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar as wenners weggestap deur Somerset College én Wynberg te wen. Die span speel weer op Woensdag 5 Maart teen Wynberg, maar dié keer is baie meer op die spel.

Paul Roos Gimnasium recently received an award for excellence in Outcomes: Mathematics for the school’s achievements in the Grade 9 LitNum (Literacy and numeracy) tests written last year. Rector Mr van der Westhuizen with award, with Ms Penny Vinjevold (Head of Education) and Mr Donald Grant, Western Cape Minister of Education.
Duan van Schalkwyk
Dexter Labuschagne Duan van Schalwyk (Graad 11), is onlangs gekies vir die O/17- en die O/20 SA-Skermspan om vanaf 3-12 April 2014 te gaan deelneem by die 2014 Cadet & Junior World Fencing Championships in Plovdiv (Bulgarye). Verder is hy ook gekies vir die SASkermspan wat sal deelneem aan die 2014 Junior African Fencing Championships in Kaïro, Egipte (1-4 Maart 2014). Duan het ook tydens die Nasionale Skermkompetisie, wat op 7 Desember 2013 in Johannesburg gehou is, ’n 1ste plek in die O/20afdeling behaal.

Stephen Chapman Paul Roos is privileged to be able to call on the services of Richard Castle, a highly experienced and successful squash coach. Mr Gericke and some parents approached him with regard to coaching squash at PRG and he accepted. Mr Castle began coaching at the age of 16 to earn pocket money and became a qualified coach the same year. From 1991 to 1999, Castle was the head coach of St Stithian’s College and Prep. School in Johannesburg, during which time they won the SA Schools title four times. While he was the Gauteng Senior Head Coach from 1998 to 2001, the province won the provincial titles every year in both the men and the women categories. Since then he has had a variety of other coaching positions in other provinces, including the WP Senior Head Coach 2003-2005. The pinnacle of his career was his appointment as National Head Coach in 2005, a position which he still holds. Concurrently, he has been a member of the four-man World Squash Federation Coaching and Development Committee since 2010. Mrs Rossouw, who manages the squash at Paul Roos, is very excited about his coming to coach at PRG, as he brings a world of experience with him. She says that the boys must make good use of this opportunity, as Mr Castle surely has much to teach us.
