Handré Pollard 22-jaar-oue Handré Pollard is die nuwe Bulle-kaptein en het sopas die span tot ‘n 28–7-oorwinning oor Chiefs gelei. Hy het sy senior loopbaan as ‘n 19-jarige by die Blue Bulls begin en sy Springbokdebuut op 28 Junie 2014 gemaak (teen Skotland in die inkomende toerreeks). Hy het 20 wedstryde vir die Springbokke gespeel, insluitende een teen die All Blacks waar hy twee drieë gedruk het. Hy was ’n sleutelfiguur in Suid-Afrika se herlewing na hulle skok-nederlaag teen Japan in die 2015 Wêreldbeker om die halfeindrondte teen die All Blacks te haal. Hy het sover in sy kort internasionale loopbaan 188 punte aangeteken.
V: Beskryf die ervaring om teen Hoër Jongenskool Paarl in die grootste Interskole-wedstryd ter wêreld te speel. Wat is die besonderse verhouding tussen die twee skole wat dit so spesiaal maak? A: Dit is altyd moeilik om te beskryf ... dit is iets wat mens nie kan verduidelik vir mense wat nie self in een van die skole was nie. Dit is ongelooflik kompeterend, maar daar word ook baie goeie vriendskappe gevorm. Die dorp (Paarl) word in twee gedeel vir daardie week en alle akademiese verpligtinge word opsy gestoot. V: Hoe was dit om in ‘n Wêreldbeker-toernooi te speel? A: Dit was werklik ‘n droom wat waar geword het. Om een toets te speel vir die Bokke is klaar ongelooflik, maar om jou land in die Wêreldbeker te verteenwoordig is iets heeltemal anders. Al het ons net kort geval, was dit my trotsste oomblik van my lewe. En hoop ek kry weer so ‘n geleentheid. V: Wat is die lekkerste daarvan om ‘n professionele rugbyspeler te wees? A: Die vriendskappe en bande wat gevorm word. Almal speel vir verskillende redes. Ek speel om te sorg vir my familie eendag, ja, maar ook vir die vriendskappe en die gevoel na ‘n wen in die kleedkamer. V: Wat is minder aangenaam van jou beroep, buiten beserings? A: Ons kan net vir ‘n beperkte tyd speel en moet kan lewe na rugby. Die hoeveelheid dae weg van die huis af – ja, dit is ongelooflik om te toer en die wêreld te sien, maar tyd saam met familie en vriende is kosbaar. V: Jy was baie lank op die kantlyn gewees met jou beserings. Hoe het jy jouself besig gehou? A: Die rehab-deel van die besering vat baie tyd meer as wat mense besef. Enige rugbyspeler sal sê dit is harder om van besering af terug te kom as wat dit is om te speel. Maar verder het ek gholf gespeel en tyd saam met vriende en familie spandeer. V: As die nuwe Super Rugby-kaptein van die Bulls, hoe sien jy hierdie uitdaging, veral in die lig daarvan gesien dat jy nog betreklik jonk is? A: Ek is jonk, maar ek speel al redelik lank senior rugby en het baie ervaring opgedoen. Ek sal alles wat ek tot dusver geleer het en wat ek gaan leer die jaar probeer oordra so goed ek kan aan my span en lei met voorbeeld.

V: Hoe het jy die wedstryde in Australië ervaar, waar julle beide ‘n Super Rugbyopwarmingswedstryd teen Chiefs gespeel het en ook aan die Brisbane Global Tens deelgeneem het? A: Daar was baie positiewe en ook negatiewe, waaraan ons hard gaan werk om reg te maak voor die Stormers-wedstryd. Maar as geheel was dit ‘n baie goeie toer gewees en ook baie goed vir die gees van die span. V: Hoe voel jy oor julle kanse in die opkomende Super Rugby-toernooi, wat vir die Bulls op 25 Februarie in Kaapstad teen die Stormers begin? A: Ons glo ons het ‘n baie goeie kans, net soos al die ander spanne. Ons neem deel om die kompetisie te wen – enigiets anders as dit sal ons sien as onsuksesvol. V: Hoe hanteer jy die roem en aandag wat ‘n hoëprofielspeler soos jy geniet? A: Ag, daar is voordele en nadele. Mens moet altyd onthou jy was self jonk en het opgekyk na die Bokke daardie tyd. Solank jou ondersteuningsraamwerk saam met familie en vriende reg is, is dit alles ‘n bysaak. V: Wat is jou mikpunte wat jy graag sal wil bereik in jou rugbyloopbaan? A: Op die oomblik net eers terugwees op die veld en my beste doen wat ek kan vir die Bulle en hopellk terug kom in die Bokspan. Ek sal dan weer my mikpunte bekyk. V: Wat laat jou hart warm klop wanneer jy weg is van die rugbyveld? A: My verloofde, Marise Malherbe! V: Wat is jou stokperdjies? Enige ander sport wat jy graag speel? A: Ek is mal oor gholf – al kan ek nie baie speel nie, geniet ek dit baie. V: Wat is jou wens vir Springbokrugby? A: My wens is dat die Suid-Afrikaanse publiek agter die Bokke sal staan. Die laaste twaalf maande was nie goed nie, maar ons het ongelooflike talent in die land en kan weer die beste in die wêreld wees.

Rampant Cape fires worsen allergies Smoke and debris from the wave of fires across the Western Cape over the past while could see a spike in nasal allergies, especially among those living in Hermanus, Paarl, Simon’s Town, Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Stilbaai and Vredehoek where blazes have been the most rampant. Asthma and allergy sufferers are being warned to stay indoors and limit exercise to minimise the risk of their allergies being triggered by the high levels of particulate matter in the smoky air.
Fires can intensify allergy symptoms by up to 11%. Even if you can’t see or smell the smoke from the fires, the body may still respond to particulate matter, made up of miniscule particles or droplets of pollution in the air that are inhaled. Any exposure to any kind of smoke to those with underlying allergy conditions can cause problems and make them more susceptible to respiratory infections.
Smoke is an environmental allergen that contains particles that can irritate the lungs, throat and eyes. Fortunately, there are many steps allergy sufferers can take to minimise the effects of the fires on their health: • Take your medications as prescribed, including antihistamines (ask your pharmacist for an antihistamine that doesn’t make you drowsy). • Stay indoors with your windows closed as much as possible (commercial paper masks do not offer significant protection).
• Limit exercise outdoors – school children who suffer from allergies may have to cut back on sports training when fires are ablaze and the high winds carry particulate matter far and wide. • Do not smoke, light candles or vacuum, as these activities will increase the particulate matter count in your home. • Wash your hair, clothes and pets after being outside. Lemon meringue pie I find most lemon meringue pies to be rather sickly and insipid with hardly a hint of lemon. This one has a real lemon kick with a lovely smooth curd. It is rich, though, and not for the fainthearted.
Serves 4–6 INGREDIENTS • 1 packet (200 g) Tennis biscuits • 125 ml (½ cup) melted butter grated rind and juice of 4 lemons • 1 tin (385 g) condensed milk • 3 extra-large eggs, separated • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) cream of tartar • 180 g castor sugar • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) baking powder
METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180 °C. • Crush the biscuits. I do this by bashing the biscuits into crumbs using a double plastic shopping bag, tied loosely, and a rolling pin. • In a small bowl, mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter. Press the mixture into a shallow pie plate. Smooth with the back of a spoon. • In a bowl, mix together the

lemon rind, lemon juice, condensed milk and egg yolks. • Pour into the crumb base. • In a clean dry bowl, beat the egg whites to a soft peak. Add the cream of tartar and beat until the peaks are very stiff. Add the castor sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the baking powder once the egg whites and sugar have formed a stiff meringue. • Spoon the meringue onto the egg mixture and cover gently. Swirl the meringue into peaks with the back of the spoon. • Bake for 20 minutes. Turn the oven off but leave the pie in the oven to cool down completely. This dries the meringue slightly. • Best served chilled.

Nuwe ouer-funksie
Nicky de Kock Ontmoet een van Laerskool De Hoop se Graad 7-leerders, Nicky de Kock. Sy was genooi om die spesiale veldtog wat sy geloods het met KFM en Expresso te deel en sy was boonop KFM se Lead SA Youth Hero in Desember 2016. Wat is haar boodskap? Nicky launched an anti-bullying campaign to raise awareness and offer support and encouragement to children who are experiencing bullying at school. As she has also been a victim of bullying herself, Nicky believes that you can rise above it and, moreover, still achieve your dreams! Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she decided to use her voice to stand up for the more timid ones. They are organising a big walk soon and this campaign is for all schools, so watch this space!

Daar is Vrydag hard geoefen en Saterdag is ‘n wedstryd gespeel teen ‘n uitnodigingspan van Kenridge. Die oorslaap in die aktiwiteitsentrum is natuurlik ‘n hoogtepunt. Die naweek is afgesluit met Tenpin Bowling by Grand West. Na so ‘n naweek is daar goeie spangees en almal is gereed vir die seisoen wat voorlê!

Brothers Francois and Nicholas Malherbe, in Grade 7 and 5 respectively, both did well at the Interprovincial Biathlon meeting in Oudtshoorn. There were seven provinces competing with over 500 athletes and the competition was tough. Francois did particularly well to come 3rd overall in the boys U/13 section and received the bronze medal.
Julianna Hasselmann has volunteered her services at Rhenish Primary School for the past four weeks. We are sad that her time with us has come to an end. Julianna plans to return to Germany and study teaching.

Swimming Joey Carollisen has been selected to represent South Africa at the Cana Zone IV swimming Championships in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, from 16 to 19 February. Kickboxing Hayley Underwood (Grade 8) obtained Gold in her category, U14, at the Cape Winelands Kickboxing Championships held on 28 January 2017. She will be part of the Boland team that will be competing at Nationals end of April in Durban.

Parel Valleiers gee om Omdat Parel Vallei se gelukbringers bulhonde is en daar so baie diereliefhebbers in die skool is, bly dit wonderlik om jaar na jaar te kan voortbou op ons verhouding met Gordonsbaai se Dierebeskermings-vereniging. Die Gemeenskap-portefeulje binne Parel Vallei se prefekraad het reeds dié kat- en hondekos wat die nuwe Graad 8-leerders geskenk het, by me. Julia Evans (hoof van die DBV Gordonsbaai) en haar span afgelewer. PV-leerders is egter nie net aan die begin van die jaar betrokke nie. Die PV Interact-klub besoek ook ten minste een keer per kwartaal dié vereniging, waartydens hulle die diere help versorg, voer en met hulle speel. Dis dan wanneer ‘n mens werklik besef hoeveel werk en liefde in dié organisasie ingaan! Die prefekraad en nuwe Graad 8’s van Parel Vallei doen ‘n beroep op die gemeenskap en ander skole in die Kom om ook betrokke te raak deur middel van skenkings of deur tyd af te staan aan die diere. Afrikaans Huistaal pronk op Provinsiale Merietelys! Die Hoërskool Parel Vallei se Afrikaans Huistaal-departement het ‘n besondere prestasie te beurt geval deur in die Graad 12 NSS-eksamen van 2016 ‘n 7de plek uit alle WKODskole in die Wes-Kaap te behaal! Parel Vallei bedank en erken graag ons twee hardwer-kende Afrikaans Huistaal-onderwysers, me. Marietjie Madsen-Leibold en me. Mardie Steenkamp. Me. MadsenLeibold het al 20 jaar en me. Mardie Steenkamp 17 jaar diens aan Parel Vallei! Dié twee juffrouens lewe hulle passie vir Afrikaans uit en dit spoel vir seker oor na hulle leerders as daar na statistieke gekyk word. Van die 50 PV Afrikaans Huistaal-leerders wat die NSS-eksamen geskryf het, het ongeveer 70% van die leerders ‘n A- of ‘n B-simbool in dié vak behaal (11 A’s en 23 B’s). 2016 Duitsolimpiade-uitslae Vier leerders van HMS Bloemhof het aan 2016 se Duitsolimpiade deelgeneem en het weer eens baie goed gevaar het, met 3de, 4de, 5de en 10e posisies behaal.
HMS Bloemhof se eerste Boek en Koek geleentheid vir die jaar is op Woensdag, 8 Februarie by Markotter aangebied. Ons gaste was misdaadskrywers Deon Meyer, Martin Steyn en Karin Brynard. Die geleentheid was net vir volwassenes en die opkoms was baie goed. Martin en Karin sal die leerders by die skool kom toespreek op Woensdag, 22 Februarie.

South African Road Championships The past week was the annual South African Road Championships. Once again our boys achieved some good results. One of the most wanted rewards on the road cycling calendar is the Individual time trial top step. This category is when one rides against time on your own, so it tests your ability to the maximum, so the ‘strongest man wins’! • Jamie Penfold came 2nd in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) u17. • Rossouw Bekker came 2nd in the Individual Time Trial u19. • Jamie Penfold also achieved an 8th place in the u17 road race. • Joshua Laughton achieved an 11th place in the u17 road race. • Paul Roos Old Boy Stefan de Bod won the u23 ITT and the u23 road race. He came second overall in the road race of the Rossouw Bekker elite category!

Discovery ITU Race Jamie Riddle led the Discovery School’s Individual Triathlon (held at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday, 11 February, in conjunction with the World Cup) from start to finish, winning in a time of 55:17. Riddle excelled in the swim, recording a time of 6:32 (the fastest swim of the day, including the adults race) and then built up a comfortable lead on the bike, before extending the lead on the run to win a little more than a minute from Samuel Courts. Matteo Greyling, Finn Elliot and Ruan Weyers completed the top five. One of the highlights was watching Richard Murray and Henri Schoeman (4th and 3rd in the Rio Olympics) duelling with the world stars in the World Cup.

Krieket teen Parel Vallei
Skaak Michelle Olivier het aan die SAJCC (South Africa African Junior Chess Championship) deelgeneem as lid van Westelike Provinsie 0.16-meisiespan. Dit het in Boksburg plaasgevind vanaf 16 tot 21 Desember en hulle span het ‘n brons medalje gewen. Michelle het ook ‘n brons medalje gewen in die Oos-Metropool-skaakproewe in die 0.18-meisieafdeling. Sy is ‘n belowende speler en ons is baie trots op haar.
Tydens HS Strand en HS Parel Vallei se onlangse krieketkragmetings het albei skole elk drie wedstryde gewen. Die eerste krieketspan het in ‘n uiters spannende wedstryd met 30 lopies geseëvier. Parel Vallei het aanvanklik die hef in die hand gehad en die Strand tot 146 lopies beperk. George du Toit het ‘n uitstekende 45 nie uit nie aangeteken. Hy is baie goed deur Wiehann Meyer bygestaan, wat 40 sprankelende lopies aangeteken het. Die Strand het daarna uitstekend geboul, en veral Rewayne Viljoen met 5 paaltjies vir 29 lopies het Parel Vallei tot 116 lopies beperk. Die 0.19B-span het ook in ‘n spannende wedstryd met 26 lopies gewen. Jarred Verwey het ‘n uitstekende 43 lopies aangeteken. Ramone Nel en JJ Stover het elk drie paaltjies platgetrek. Die 0.17-span het ook in ‘n spannende wedstryd met 8 lopies geseëvier. Jarred Verwey het ‘n uitstekende 52 lopies aangeteken. Jarred Verwey was die uitstaande speler van die week. Die 0.15A-span het met 201 lopies teen Charlie Hofmeyr verloor. Vroeër die jaar het hulle naelskraap met 7 lopies teen Parel Vallei verloor. Die 0.15B-span het met 5 paaltjies teen Parel Vallei verloor. Hierdie span toon egter goeie vordering.
VRL: Heylei-opleiding
Karateprestasies
Die VRL was Saterdag, 4 Februarie, by die Heylei-leerderberaad, in samewerking met FEDSAS. Daar was 30 verskillende skole in die Wes-Kaap by hierdie geleentheid. Hier het hulle meer geleer van die aktiewe rol wat hulle as leiers in die skool moet speel om die leerders te verteenwoordig. Hulle het ook meer inligting gekry oor hulle rol as leiers op die skool se beheerliggaam.
Jodi Cronje (Graad 10) is aangewys as die Beste Kata. Hy het sy bruin belt verwerf en is ook aangewys as die beste student van die jaar 2016. Hy is verder gekies om aan die Boland-proewe deel te neem. Jodi neem al sewe jaar karate by Seiki Kan Karate DO Strand.
