EMO ADAMS OUR AWSUM INSPIRATION FOR APRIL Credit: Nelis Engelbrecht photography

EMO ADAMS Emo Adams was only 9 years old when he stole the hearts of the audience members in David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s musical, District 6. In 2007 Emo released his first CD, “Tall, Dark & Afrikaans”. Ever since he has been on the go entertaining audiences at big festivals and shows all over South Africa, TV series and his chat show, Jou show met Emo, which is one of kykNET’s most popular shows. AWSUM asked him a few questions about fatherhood and his plans for 2018. What were the highs and lows of your school career? Meeting Nelson Mandela at our school. I sang an anthem to him which was known as the unofficial anthem back then. I did not know the words so I had to sing it off a page. There weren’t many lows during school. The only low was on my first day of Standard 6 (Grade 8) when the police raided our school. I would say that was my low. Any stories your old high school teacher would tell us? I really don’t know what my teachers would say, because I wasn’t loud. I was a quiet, and average student and did not even make jokes or anything. March last year, you became a dad for the second time. What do you enjoy about fatherhood? I think everything. I have been an entertainer my whole life so fatherhood is very new to me and you learn something every day. It’s not like entertainment – you present something different, add a few lights and then it’s a new show, but with kids you learn something every day. The whole experience is what’s amazing to me. Rehearsal, shows, teething, nappies, what’s your recipe to keep all the balls in the air? If someone knows the concept of that recipe I would pay that person. Everyone’s life is different, so you try to fit everything you can into one day. The best I can do is to give 100% at work and 100% when I am home. That is like the best case scenario.

What do you do to relax? I don’t really relax, but if I do it’s with the family. Our family made a pact that every Sunday we will take a break from everything and spend time together. That was kind off our new year’s resolution and has worked well for us so far. Luckily my wife is taking me to Thailand for my birthday so that will be a nice vacation. Who is your biggest motivator/cheerleader? There are a few people, but my biggest cheerleader would be my wife. She supports me with everything that I do even if she thinks I’m taking on too much work or I need to take it slow. And then my manager Olivia Gildenhuys. She is the second one that will always motivate me to reach higher grounds and shoot for the stars. Also my friends, the group JAG, my parents and, like everyone, I have a lot of good people in my corner that always motivates me. You worked with a few big names in the industry, namely David Kramer and Taliep Petersen. Any life lessons you learnt from these icons that you want to share with the readers? You really do learn something from everybody and obviously the longest time of my career was with Taliep Petersen and David Kramer, but you learn so much of all the people. You steal with your eyes and learn, make mistakes and you try to improve. Even with my director Basil Appolis, we worked together for years and I know exactly what he wants. He inspires me to write my own scripts and to start producing and directing. There are quite a few people that inspire me, but I think for me, I would say the community of Mitchell’s Plain, because if you look at their

lifestyle you get inspired to try better. You can see that all of them try to do better in life and it gives me the courage to try harder. You and your wife, Michelle Gildenhuys is the perfect image of the new South Africa and that love conquers all. Any advice? She is a very good activist and example for what our country should be. I wouldn’t say it’s a new South Africa, you can only be “new” so many times but we must try to change the mentality of people or what they are used to. They say you can’t learn an old dog new tricks but you can teach the new people. That’s the reason why she does motivational talks at schools. The youth is the people you need to help and who can make a difference. She is definitely a great advocate for what this country should be. What’s on the horizon for 2018? The Emo 30 show for kykNET and my 40th birthday. It’s cool to know that you have been in the industry for so long and also relevant for so long. I know there were many before me and there would be many after me, but I have seen a lot of people come and go and you never hear from them again. Any funny memes that you saw lately? I don’t know, the last one a read was don’t be so ‘judgerag’…it is a word for when you judge people. What is you favourite hashtag? #awkard

Who knew that pearls would pop up again as the number one pretty-upper? Forget Gran’s gracious version --- you want them splashed top to toe. They’re also perfect to add on yourself to refresh any item in your wardrobe. Go, pearly queen, go!

LACE IT UP! It’s official --- if you want to look hot this winter go for laces. Not the frilly wispy kind, the thread and tie it up kind. Lacing is the NOW way to add interesting deets to any outfit. Look for laces on everything from T- tops to tunics, sweaters and skirts and up and down your legs!

TREND ALERT!

When girls and guys hit puberty, a new type of sweat gland develops in your armpits and genital area and skin bacteria feed on the sweat this type of gland produces, which usually leads to big bad BO. Deodorant doesn’t have any reinforcements to keep you from perspiring but it does counteract the smell as it targets the bacteria that hang around your armpits. Antiperspirant cuts down on body odour as it actually minimises sweating. So in the battle between deodorant vs antiperspirant, which one will you go for? • If you sweat a lot or are very active, reach for the anti-perspirant that offers long protection and is also ultra-absorbent while letting skin breathe. • If you are mainly worried about underarm odour, a deodorant should be enough. You can actually use one or the other on different days depending on what kind of protection you need.

With his smooth voice and slick dance moves, Chris Brown says he’s The Man --- in pink.

THE LOWDOWN ON BO

“

I’M LOVING…

PEARLIE GIRLIE

OK, she’s always way ahead, so yes, it’s Kendall Jenner stepping it out in to-die-for laced-up black denims.

Guess what? When you’re wrapped up in winter woolies, you can smell, especially when we have to be “snoep” with water. Don’t freak out, everyone has this prob. So it’s time to take stock of your antismell tactics and shop for a deodorant or antiperspirant. But do you know the difference and which one best suits your battle against sweat and dreaded BO? Antiperspirants and deodorants are not the same thing. Deodorants block or mask body odour while antiperspirants prevent sweating. Antiperspirants are not just for underarms and can also be used on the hands, feet, body and groin area. Always test a new product by applying a bit to your armpitst o see how your skin reacts and to be sure you don’t develop a sensitivity reaction. Roll-ons work well on the underarms, and are good for around the hairline to prevent facial sweating. Aerosols are also good for armpits as well as body, hands and feet. Apply deo twice a day, usually in the morning and again before bed.

If soon-to-be-princess Meghan Markle can wear a beret and thrill the crowds, why can’t you?

IT’S WIN TER. IT’ S WOKE. OH NO! IT’S BO!

PINK FOR BOYS

C’mon dudes, no colour is off limits. It’s just the way you style it and the confidence with which you pull it off that count. So here’s what the plan is --- get into pink for winter. It’s likely that you already have a rosy tinge lurking in a drawer. Remember those pink socks that you got for Christmas…? Think about it – pink IS personality. And the key to making pink work for you is ensuring it’s the right shade. Take a look – it’s called dusty pink. A Bite of Latin America.

by Jenny Morris @jennymorrischef

Let’s Cook!

Paging through Susie Chatz-Andersons book A Bite of Latin America made me long for the delicious food of Brazil, she speaks of the delicious breakfast cakes served in the mornings with jugs of fresh cashew juice, the delicious empados, the little pies filled with meat or seafood, it brought back memories of steaming bowls of Moqueca delicious with coconut milk, seafood and dende oil. In this book the reader is taken on a culinary tour from Mexico, travelling southwards through Central and South America as they discover each region and its gastronomy. This book provides the practical guidance to recreate the magic of these meals at home. The food has a complex layering of flavours and techniques that leaves one in a constant state of amazement. The recipes are also adapted for South Africa, where certain ingredients are difficult to find. Join Susie Chatz-Anderson on a culinary journey through Central and South America, discovering real Latin American food and recipes. Her passion for the region and its food infuses each of these delicious recipes. Packed with anecdotes and really magnificent pictures, this book offers practical guidance to help you recreate the magic of these meals at home. The subtle layering of flavour and use of authentic techniques make for scrumptious food, adapted for South Africa. Susie believes in good food and living a good life. She took a year off to travel through Mexico and South America in a quest for the best taste experiences. Discover these for yourself with A Bite of Latin America. Susie Chatz-Anderson’s passions are good food and living a good life. She constantly goes on trips around the world, discovering new taste experiences. She and her husband took one year off from the corporate world, travelling through Mexico and South-America, searching for the best dishes and eating experiences. “The origin of this book really lies in two things: my complete love of good food, and a decision taken by my husband and I – after many years of ‘normal’ life – to resign from our serious offices jobs, put all our earthly possessions into storage and buy two tickets to travel the world for one year… starting in Mexico.” Susie Chatz-Anderson

Tortilla de Espinacas

(Spinach omelette – Spanish style) This Colombia n recipe is adapted to a Spanish-style tortilla and makes a lovely light lunch when served with a crisp side salad and avocado slices

Ingredients Serves: 2-3 • • • • • • • •

1 medium-sized onion 200 g potatoes 2 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 200 g fresh spinach, thoroughly washed 5 large eggs 1 fresh medium-heat chilli, finely chopped Pinch of snipped fresh chives to garnish

Preparation 1. Cut the onion in half and then thinly slice into half-moons. 2. Peel the potatoes and slice into thin rounds, thoroughly drying in a cloth thereafter. 3. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan of approximately 20 cm in diameter until very hot, then add the potatoes and onion and toss until well coated with the oil.

Page 6

AWSUM NEWS APRIL 2018

4. Season to taste and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook, covered, for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft (they should not brown), shaking the pan every so often. 5. In a saucepan, lightly steam the spinach. Once cooked, squeeze out all the liquid (it is very important to get all the liquid out) and chop finely. Set aside until needed. 6. Lightly beat the eggs and season with salt and pepper. 7. When the onion and potatoes are cooked, raise the heat to medium, thoroughly mix in the spinach and chilli before adding the egg mixture to the pan. 8. Reduce to low heat and cook for 20 minutes, uncovered. 9. Every so often, run a palette knife around the edges of the omelette to prevent it sticking. 10. When there is no liquid left on top of the omelette, turn it over with the help of a large plate and cook for 2 minutes more (it should remain moist in the middle). 11. Sprinkle with fresh chives before serving.

Hockey tour to the Netherlands At the end of term one, more than forty Parel Vallei-ers had the privilege of visiting The Netherlands as part of the PV hockey tour. These learners enjoyed thirteen days of playing against some of the well-known Dutch hockey clubs while exploring The Netherlands. They were hosted by club members and had the pleasure of experiencing Nederlands hospitality first-hand. The results of the games played were as follows: the A-side girls played five games, winning two and losing three; the B-side girls played five games, winning two, drawing one and losing two; the A-side boys played five games, winning three and losing two and the B-side boys played four games, winning three and losing one. Our players also took part in two hockey clinics hosted by Dutch coaches where they were able to refine and improve their playing skills.

PAUL ROOS GIMNASIUM Athletics Commonwealth Games Breyton Poole cleared 2.21m which meant he did qualify for the final however due to a time violation his final height was 2.18m…we are proud of you nonetheless Breyton!

Apart from playing hockey, our learners also toured a number of cities: Geldrop, Alpen aan den Rijn, Eindhoven, Amersfoort, Utrecht and Amsterdam. They canoed along the canals and cycled through the streets of Utrecht. They visited the Amsterdam dungeons and the famous Madame Tussaud wax museum and even paid a visit to the Red Light District, so unique to Holland. One of the highlights of the tour was a visit to Snow World, the world’s largest indoor ski-resort in Zoetermeer, which offered most of them a thrilling first time experience of skiing. The tour ended with a visit to a cheese and clog factory, where they demonstrated how to make cheese and clogs. For many learners this tour was an unforgettable experience and will remain a highlight of their high school career!
