Switch your lights off on Saturday

Join the symbolic switch for Earth Hour on 29 March 2014, in the hour of darkness from 8.30pm. History of Earth Hour Earth Hour first started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 when 2.2-million households turned off their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change. Today Earth Hour is much more than just switching off lights for an hour once a year. It’s a growing international campaign to encourage people to make sustainable choices in every aspect of their lives and the act of switching off the lights for the hour has taken on symbolic significance. This year South Africans are being challenged to go one step further by publically responding to the question, ‘How do you honour the Earth?’ with the intention of changing the way we behave towards the environment. “If we all add our voice by sharing our promise, we not only uphold our own best intentions but we can motivate those around us,” says Pedzi Gozo, Executive Manager of Communications, WWF South Africa. “The growing collection of promises forms an inspiring overview of the varied actions that everyday citizens are taking to make a difference.” Answers to this ‘How do you honour the Earth?’ question can be found at www.earthhour.org. za where people and organisations have been making their commitments to protect our planet. Make your promise to the Earth by thinking about the choices you make around food, energy and water use – and what our wider impact is on the environment. Together we are stronger. Promises already posted on the site range from the simple, like unplugging the cellphone charger or eating

only SASSI green-listed fish, to the philosophical, such as taking time out to enjoy and appreciate nature, as well as huge environmental commitments made by large corporates like SAA, Nedbank, Pick n Pay and Woolworths. How do you honour the Earth? To make your promise, go to www.earthhour.org.za where you can fill in your personal promise for the year ahead. NEWS

Customer Care Line: 0861 NULAID (685243) Visit our website: www.nulaid.co.za Social responsibility at Somerset College Somerset College aims to instil in every student an awareness of the needs of the greater community, and a sense of social responsibility. The Social Responsibility Portfolio, through matric student, Jordan Sher and her active committee, have been hard at work this term. The Sandwich Spread initiative has continued with a core group of reliable girls and boys gathering on Tuesday mornings to prepare sandwiches for children at Macassar Primary School. On Monday afternoons about twenty five girls and boys gather at the new vegetable garden on our campus over the river to weed and turn the soil in an initiative called Mandela Monday. The Social Responsibility Committee plan to harvest the crop in order to provide vegetables for the Somerset West Soup Kitchen. In the eighth lesson on Tuesdays, a school driver collects twenty Grade 6 learners from Macassar Primary School for an afternoon of Maths tuition offered by a group of volunteers from across the Grades - some of whom have done this service for the past four years. A blanket drive has been initiated where people are asked to knit a 14cm2 square, later to be joined with others to make quilts for the upcoming winter months. Blankets are also being placed in the drum in the hall foyer. Bake sales have been keenly supported, with the proceeds going into the Social Responsibility account to be distributed where needed. The Civvies day money has been used to purchase clothing, and stationery for two boys and two girls through the Imibala Trust. On Friday afternoons a group of dedicated Visual Artists instruct twenty older children (Grade 10 and up) behind the Imibala Coffee Shop. One such theme included shapes (conical, square etc.) A NekDonation event was be held at Brak en Jan earlier this month (attached photographs). College pupils spent the afternoon with young children doing fun activities.

The victorious Somerset College 1st Cricket Team that retained the “Ashes” against Patel Vallei. This is the 11th year in a row that Somerset College have retained the Ashes.

Somerset College win the Ashes Playing in the Ashes has always been a major highlight for any cricketer at Somerset College and Parel Vallei. This year PV hosted the 1st XI fixture. PV won the toss and did not hesitate to put College in to bat on a wicket that looked great for batting. They prepared the pitch to suit their team as it was a pitch which offered nothing to seam bowlers. This was demonstrated by them as they brought in spinners to bowl as early as the 6th over of the match. College lost a quick wicket, but Elliot Moses (42) and Dylan de Haas (44) put on a great partnership but soon ran each other out. Phillip Carstens (43) batted well with some support from his brother Franco (48), all of them making starts but failing to push through and get big scores. College put on an overnight score of 188/8. Early on Friday morning College were bowled out for 194 after 53 overs in our first innings which was below our target score of 250. College came in to bowl and were rewarded in the first over of the match with William Sendin getting a wicket with his second ball of the match. William finished with 2 wickets and was soon taken out of the attack as the pitch offered nothing to pace bowlers. Franco Carstens bowled well and took 3 wickets which helped restrict PV from scoring freely. PV finished on 118 all out after 51 overs, which was a great effort by College in the field, taking a lead of 76 runs. College again lost an early wicket in their quest to extend the lead but soon recovered as Phillip Carstens (33) held the innings together until College lost the wicket which led us to losing wickets in clusters leaving us on 125/6. Franco Carstens (53) held the fort, but soon lost his wicket shortly after scoring his 50 and the team was bowled out for 165, resulting in a lead of 241 runs. With an hour left in the day to bowl, College managed to take two important wickets with some clever bowling from Jono Sloane and Franco Carstens. PV finished with an overnight score of 31/2, needing 210 more runs to win. The final day’s play was always going to be a challenge as PV was looking to occupy the crease and bat for as long as possible, needing about two runs an over to win the Ashes. Our bowlers came out hard and took wickets at regular intervals and in the end bowled PV out for 101, with Elliot Moses taking the last 3 wickets. This was a great win for the Somerset College boys and a great way to finish the season!

Rhenish Swimmers in a Class of their Own The swimming team of Rhenish Girls’ High School reaffirmed convincingly why Rhenish is regarded as the Top Swimming School in the Western Cape with their faultless performance at the 4M Gala on Tuesday 25 February 2014. The second leg of the annual clash of the four Boland girls’ schools – Bloemhof Meisieskool, Paarl Girls’ High, La Rochelle Girls’ High and Rhenish Girls’ High – took place in the swimming pool and it is clearly here that Rhenish is in her element. Rhenish swimmers swam to glory, claiming wins in over 95% of the races and they claimed all five of the trophies awarded on the day. Caitlin Joubert was awarded the Trophy for the Top U14 Swimmer, Mikayla Eagles won the Trophy for the Top U16 Swimmer AND she won the Open Event Trophy, and Ash Rutherford won the Trophy for the Top U18 Swimmer. With an astounding 331 points (145 points ahead of the closest competitor), Rhenish was also awarded the Overall Winner Trophy. Rhenish has won the Gala between the four schools for 9 consecutive years. On Wednesday 5 March Rhenish Girls’ High completed the double - the ninth consecutive win of the coveted Boy/Girl Gala held at the Newlands Pool. The Gala is an annual event and the highlight of the schools’ swimming calendar. With eight consecutive wins and a convincing victory (by some 140 points) at the 4M Gala, the pressure was on Rhenish to prove that they were worthy holders of the title, “Best Girls’ Swimming School”. Competition was extremely tight with Rustenburg Girls’ High hot on the heels of the Rhenish swimmers. With the vocal support and encouragement of the Rhenish supporters, the swimmers pulled out all the stops and swam their way to a narrow and hotly contested ninth consecutive win.

Rhenish is very proud of the following athletes who will represent Boland at the South African Youth and Junior Champs:

MARCH 2014 11

Paul Roos se koor o.l.v. mnr.

Waving the baton is about 5% of conducting...

Maestro Arjan Tien lectured and demonstrated the vital information and techniques that accompany the art of conducting. The learner-conductors were given the opportunity to conduct works such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony, and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, played by the Hugo Lambrechts Senior String Orchestra, Hugo Lambrechts Concert Wind Band and the two pianists Jose Bias and Mario Nell. It was a very enriching experience for the two Paul Roosers. Besides learning how to use the baton, their general music knowledge was immensely broadened.

Julian Bock (Grade 11) Two Paul Roosers, Roelof Temmingh (Grade 12) and clarinettist David Wolfswinkel (Grade 11) recently had the privilege of attending a three-day conducting course at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow. The course was presented by Dutch Maestro Arjan Tien, principal conductor of the Magogo Chamber Orchestra. Conductors, music teachers and university students from all over the country attended this course. Roelof and David were the only two school-going attendees of the 34 people who took part.

Roelof Temmingh (pictured), recently had the opporunity to find out what conducting entails ... and realised that it’s not just about waving a baton around..

By no means is PushBullet new, but thanks to an update this month, the app is now one of the most powerful and useful apps you will ever install on both your phone and computer. For those new, PushBullet began as an incredibly useful app that would allow you to “push” links, files, or other goodies from your computer to phone and then back again. We have watched as the functionality for it has grown immensely over the last six or so months, but this month its creators added notification mirroring. With notification mirroring, PushBullet will show a pop-up in your Chrome PC browser every time you get a notification from any app on your phone (assuming you enabled it). You can choose to dismiss it on phone, turn off mirroring from that app, or go on about your business. I don’t know about you, but the fact that I don’t have to pick-up my phone each time it buzzes, and can keep my eyes glued to my computer, plus wipe the notification from my phone, is freaking ground-breaking. Go install this.
