Children and oral care The importance of dental care is often overlooked; not only in childhood but through adulthood as well. This negligence affects not only the health of your teeth, but also their appearance. Preventative dentistry for children is the best way to ensure healthy teeth-everybody wants shiny pearly whites! The pain associated with dentists that children learn to fear has been removed from the field, thus ensuring that children do not worry when their biannual appointment looms. Below we list a few ways in which to ensure that your child has a positive attitude towards dental care to guarantee a lifelong bright smile. 1. Choose a child-savvy dentist There are dentists with additional training and interest in children’s dental issues. Look specifically for a paediatric dentist; alternatively find a dentist with a positive attitude and happy staff to make sure that your child has a good experience. 2. Get acquainted with the place Before the time of the appointment, take your child to the office to get acquainted

with the practice. Or bring them with you on your appointment so that they can get used to the idea and the atmosphere. 3. How do you feel about the dentist? If you as a parent have any negative memories or associations with the dentist; put them aside so that you don’t pass them on to your child. Allow your child to have a positive experience. 4. Respect the baby teeth Even though baby teeth are lost, proper care of them ensures the health of “big teeth” and the growing jaw. Your dentist might even have suggestions for your child’s dental care that you didn’t have when you were young. Ask about fluoride that will help protect baby teeth from tooth decay and the permanent teeth busy developing. 5. Lisa-Jean Malan is aangewys as Beste Aktrise en hulle loop ook weg met pryse vir die Beste Tegniese Span, Beste Ensemble-werk en Beste Regisseur!
Swellendam: Aflosbyeenkoms Bloemhof het verlede naweek in Swellendam aan ‘n aflosbyeenkoms deelgeneem en besonder goed gevaar. Die atlete het in al nege wedlope van die byeenkoms ‘n medalje gewen. In sewe van die nege wedlope het Bloemhof die 4Mkampioene La Rochelle geklop. Die dogters o.17 -groep het altwee hulle wedlope gewen. Die dogters o.14-wisselaflosspan het die prys ontvang vir die beste prestasie by die byeenkoms en Bloemhof is aangewys as die beste dogterspan van die byeenkoms.

Sun City-tennistoernooi Baie geluk aan die tweede tennisspan wat tydens die vakansie as wenners van die Sun City-tennistoernooi uit die stryd getree het! Dié span het teen die o.15 A-span in die semifinaal gespeel om deur te dring an die finaal. Die 0.15’s het uiteindelik ‘n derde plek behaal. Dis ‘n uitsonderlike prestasie, synde die toernooi vir eerste spanne aangebied is.
Prysuitdeling Die prysuitdeling is een van die belangrikste geleenthede op die Bloemhof-kalender en op Donderdag 3 Oktober is meer as driehonderd Bloemhoffers vir verskeie prestasies vereer. Nie net was die akademiese, sport en kultuurpresteerders vir hulle harde werk beloon nie, maar is daar ook ‘n paar spesiale pryse toegeken.

Comic Competition From 31 August to 14 September a group of seventeen learners from nine different African countries ventured on a trip to Heidelberg, Germany, for a cartoon workshop. All participants of this workshop had previously drawn a cartoon about conflict, in German, which was then rated by a jury panel from the German Goethe Institute. 40 Schools over 26 Sub-Saharan countries participated in the competition and Adrienne van der Merwe (Grade 11) received a gold medal and first place.
Rhythmic Gymnastics Savannah Petersen attended Boland trials for Rhythmic Gymnastics where she received a gold medal. Savannah went on to achieve her Boland Colours for this sport and she participated in the South African National Championships in Durban in September.
Visit to the Helderberg Nature Reserve Grade 10 Life Sciences learners ventured into the Helderberg Nature reserve for an in depth study of the biome present there.

Waarom vaar Parel Vallei so goed in Wiskunde? Dis alombekend dat Parel Valleiers goed vaar in Wiskunde en hard werk om dit so te hou. Dit is al bewys deur die jare en laas jaar weer beklemtoon in die NSS-eksamen toe JC Schoeman 100% in Wiskunde behaal het! In 2012 het 184 matrikulante Wiskunde geneem en slegs 52 Wiskundige Geletterdheid. Parel Vallei se matrieks van 2012 kan ook spog met 59 onderskeidings vir Wiskunde en 24 vir Wiskundige Geletterdheid. DIE BURGER het ook onlangs berig dat die Hoërskool Parel Vallei een van die top vyf Wiskundeskole in die Wes-Kaap is, gemeet aan die 2012-NSS-uitslae. (Die Wiskunde-prestasie van elke skool is gemeet deur ‘n puntestelsel waardeur die uitslae van leerders wat Wiskunde geskryf het, gedeel is deur die aantal matrikulante in die skool. Die hele matriekklas is dus in berekening gebring). Die Wiskunderesep by Parel Vallei is een van groot sukses en die drie hoofbestanddele is altyd perfek in balans om die beste resultate te verseker. Daar word ook konstante hulp gebied aan leerders wat graag beter wil presteer deur weeklikse hulpklasse aan te bied. Derdens word leerders ook aangemoedig om deel te neem aan interne en eksterne olimpiades om hulle vermoёns teen groter groepe te toets. Parel Valleiers het vanjaar weereens puik gepresteer in talle Wiskunde-olimpiades . BFG Miss Teenager South Africa
Civvies Day A civvies day was held at Hottentots-Holland High School with the goal to collect good second hand clothes which could be distributed to people in need in the Helderberg Basin and further afield. More than 3 000 articles were collected - an astounding amount. The Representative Council of Learners, the School Monitors, the Interact Club and learners belonging to the President’s Awards Club sorted the clothes.

Beata Bena Green, a Gr.11 learner from Hottentots Holland High school in Somerset West, has recently been elected as head-girl for 2014, following in the footsteps of her older sister,headgirl for 2013,Tshidi Marvina Green. Beata was crowned on Saturday the 28th September 2013 as BFG Miss Teenager South Africa in Graighall, Johannesburg. She will be representing South Africa in the Miss Teenager Universe to be hosted in South America next year. The BFG organisation searches for teen ambassadors of beauty, culture and tourism. The BFG Miss Teenager South Africa represents South Africa nationally and internationally, a teen who aspire to be a role model to her peers and have the passion to work for the benefit of the underprivileged communities of our society. Beata is an active and vibrant teenager who dedicates most of her time to school projects, athletics, sports, arts, drama and acting. She belongs to various groups like The President’s Awards Team, The Gold Peer Education Programme and the RCL, running at her school. Through these organisations she was recently exposed to radio presenting when she hosted an hour long show on 16 July, Youth Day, on a local radio station, Radio Helderberg. She was also seen on SABC 3 Expresso, advertising Active Citizenship amongst the Youth initiated by the Rotary Club SA. Beata is available for any motivational speaking, fundraising events or programmes hosted by schools, churches, organisations and establishments, especially in aid of children and the youth of today. Proud sponsors of Somerset College hockey The Somerset College Senior School hockey teams were hosted by Helderview BMW, sponsors of these hockey teams. The hockey players and their parents were entertained in style at BMW’s show room. The event was of the highest order, as guests enjoyed each other’s company in a warm atmosphere with live music in a show room which was transformed for all to enjoy and appreciate the relationship between the College and Helderview BMW. The evening was hosted by one of the Directors, Jaco Uys and his wife Monica. The focus was on the players and their achievements and also the successes enjoyed by the teams at the College this past season. The College is proud of the thirty Provincial and National representatives across all age groups. Six of the 1st XI Girls were part of the successful Boland u18A team that won the
Inter-Provincial Tournament in July. The 1st XI were also runners up at the prestigious St Mary’s Hockey Festival at the start of the season and winners for the second year now at the Cape Town International u18 Hockey Festival. They are unbeaten in local league matches. The College’s 2nd XI and u16A Girls teams are also unbeaten this season. In his address, Jaco Uys expressed his delight with their association with the College and commended the students, teams and coaches on a fantastic season, ending by wishing the teams well. In response, the Head of Somerset College, Meg Fargher, complimented Helderview BMW on the special event, and reaffirmed the relationship with this local sponsor that has assisted the sport at the College greatly, allowing the school to reach greater heights on the hockey field.

Summertime is 4x4 time AWSUM shares some great 4x4 trails for the whole family: Atlantis Dunes Four By Four Trail in Atlantis Atlantis Dunes is located just outside Atlantis and is exactly what the name says, a huge sand dune – or sandpit. Adventurers are able to take their 4x4 vehicles and no low range is required. A high clearance vehicle is recommended. This is a great day activity when visiting Atlantis. Attakwaskloof 4x4 Trail Four By Four Trail in Mossel Bay Attaquas 4x4 Trail is located in the Outeniqua Nature Reserve. The pass used to be the main route for ox wagons travelling between Cape Town and Mossel Bay. The trail was completed in 1869. Babylonstoren 4x4 Four By Four Trail in Malmesbury Babylonstoren 4x4 is located about 20 km from Malmesbury and offers a challenging route with a difficulty grading of 4; some experience is required. The trail starts at a granite outcrop and features some tricky ascents and descents. The views are beautifull. Badshoek Game Farm 4x4 Trail Four By Four Trail in Beaufort West Badshoek Game Farm 4x4 Routes is located
35 km from Beaufort West. The routes vary from 10 km to 70 km and range from 1 to 5 hours to complete. Bergkraal 4x4 Four By Four Trail in Vredendal Bergkraal 4x4 is situated on a farm between Vredendal and Klawer. The exact coordinates are unknown so it is essential that you call beforehand. This route is not an accredited 4x4 route but safety rules and precautions are enforced. . Bergplaats 4x4 Trails Four By Four Trail in Beaufort West Beginners and experienced drivers will find plenty of thrills and pleasant driving on Bergplaats three 4x4 routes graded 2 – 3; all with stunning views of the Karoo. The game farm includes flat and plateau areas. Biedouw 4x4 Trail Four By Four Trail in Cederberg Wilderness Area Biedouw 4x4 is located in the Cedarberg mountain area with the closest town, Clanwilliam, 54km away. het al by feeste soos Ramfest, Splashy Fen, Carry Six Packer en Simonstock opgetree en hulle was ook saam die MK-span op die laaste Avontoer.
Hierdie maand verwelkom ons n nuwe afdeling in die AWSUM koerant, “Op die AWSUM tracks met…” In hierdie afdeling fokus ons elke maand op ‘n nuwe of reeds gevestigde band. Ons kreatiewe span gaan uit om die bands te ontmoet, `n paar vrae te vra en hulle aan die tieners bekend te stel. Die eerste band wat ons ontmoet het, is Loveglove Pyrotechnics. Hierdie groep jong manne het in Stellenbosch mekaar ontmoet waar hulle hul liefde vir musiek ontwikkel het. ‘n Fantastiese band om live te sien, met ongelooflike verhoog persoonlikhede en baie interessante kleredrag. Die AWSUM-span het hulle in die Paarl na `n lang oefensessie ontmoet. Die hoofsanger is Dimitri Lovecuts met sy manskappe: Davey Deeps (Kitaar), Crossfire Versace (Bas kitaar) en Lemmy Banger-Knightley (Dromme). Hulle
By hierdie feeste het hulle onder andere saam met Springbok Nude Girls, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Van Coke Kartel, Ashtray Electric, Zebra and Giraffe, Bittereinder en Jack Parrow opgetree. Loveglove Pyrotechnics gaan binnekort op elke tiener se lippe wees. Hulle het hul eie besonderse styl en AWSUM kan nie wag vir die uitreiking van hul eerste CD nie. Well, finally we’re reviewing a game for you! The 3DS-based Animal Crossing: New Leaf is as casual a title as you’ll find. Only with this game you don’t have to keep forking over cold cash for golden upgrades or inviting online friends to play in order to earn a bonus point or two. But, hey, when it’s right … it’s right. And Gru— the former supervillain who once swiped the moon and left the world screaming while he postured and mwoohahaed—has come to grips with the fact that he’s really a softy down deep. He’s an average, bald-headed mastermind who simply loves being a dad to three completely adorable adopted daughters. Star Trek Games with movie tie-ins don’t have a great track record. They always offer a few character elements and a little story action fans can buy into, but they tend to fall short when it comes to the overall gaming experience. So after I broke out my Vulcan ear tips and pinned on my favorite plastic Federation pocket emblem, I set my phaser to “wary” as I ripped through the shrink-wrap around Star Trek. The sensor readings that soon started coming in let me know that the game does fit snuggly into the newly rebooted Trekkie canon. Everything takes place between the events of director J.J. Abrams’ 2009 blockbuster flick Star Trek and his new 2013 Star Trek Into Darkness. Moviegoers will remember that the planet Vulcan was demolished during the last go-round. So here in the game, the emotionless, green-blooded Vulcans whip up a high-tech thingamajig they call the Helios device to help them quickly create a new home.

Gravity PG-13 Two hundred miles. It doesn’t seem that far these days. Drive 200 miles between New York City and Boston, and you’ll rarely be far from a Starbucks. A 200mile road trip through the open West will take you past cookie-cutter convenience stores offering sodas and beef jerky and unleaded gas. The time zone probably won’t change in 200 miles. The area code might not either. A couple hundred miles aren’t enough sometimes to see a change of scenery. Unless, of course, you take that trip straight up. Back in the day, space shuttles would orbit above Earth at between 200 and 385 miles—no Starbucks in sight. There, where you can see our globe cup like the underside of a spoon, life itself is an intrusion. The cosmos conspires to kill anyone who touches it. Out there, death is only as far away as a twisted air hose, a frayed space suit or an unhinged tether. Matt Kowalsky, Ryan Stone and a handful of others have taken that 200-mile trip straight up. For Matt, it’s just the latest of many. He’s a career astronaut, intimately familiar with space’s cold and dark, its weightlessness and airlessness. But Ryan’s a newbie. The weightlessness upsets her stomach. The emptiness disquiets her. She’s gripped by a sense of fragility—the sense that life can end so quickly, so unexpectedly. Her

Russia, trying to shoot down one of its own satellites, has caused an unintentional chain reaction—damaging other satellites and sending the resulting debris hurtling toward the astronauts. They try to speed through their procedures, but it’s too late: The satellite they’re working on and the space shuttle they’re counting on are soon pelted with bits of metal and plastic, each scrap a silent missile. It’s chaos—silent, cold, deadly. And when it’s over, it leaves tragedy in its wake. The debris destroyed the shuttle and killed everyone else onboard. Still floating outside, the two have their spacesuits, but Ryan’s air is running dangerously low. They’ve got just one real shot: Go to the International Space Station, hovering 100 miles away. There are emergency rescue craft there. Maybe a working radio. Matt says he even knows where the Russians keep their vodka. But no one has ever attempted such an untethered, unconfined trip through open space. A thousand things could go wrong on the way. And once they get there, they have no guarantee of safety. The debris is still shooting ‘round and ‘round in orbit, and it’s due back in 90 minutes.
