Attending the Intershools in 1986, I met a visitor from America who was seriously involved in youth sports event management.

The gentleman was absolutely astounded by the sheer volume of the Interschools, and mentioned to me that it would be quite impossible to organsie anything of this magnitude between any two schools anywhere in the famed US of A. Die vraag kan met reg gevra word wat dit dan is wat hierdie kompetisie tussen die spogskole Hoër Jongenskool en Gimnasium so besonders maak. Hoekom vlieg oudstudente uit verre wêrelddele om dit by te woon? Hoekom is daar soms meer mense op die piepklein Faurestraat-pawiljoene as op die grandiose Nuweland? Hoekom hou hierdie geleentheid amper die ganse land vasgenael aan ’n televisieskerm? Ek dink die antwoord lê nie soseer in die statistieke van wen of verloor nie, maar in die menslike komponent van Interskole: ou vriende wat mekaar weer sien, paaie en plekke van lank gelede wat weer opgesoek word, en natuurlik, die huidige geslag Gimmies en Boishaaiers (in my tyd ongebreideld Bloedworse en Galpille genoem!) wat sake uitspook op groen grasvelde onder die aanblik van imposante bergreekse. ’n Besondere woord van dank aan almal wat betrokke was by die reëlings, veral die HJS-personeel, wat hierdie jaar die gashere is. Ons lig ook die hoed vir die skeidsregters en afrigters, wat bereid is om so baie tyd en opoffering aan skolesport af te staan.

Finally, all glory to our Creator for the privilege to be a part of this event. May the most deserving team win. May this Interschools be remembered for its friendship, camaraderie and healthy competition.

Dit is al ‘n holruggeryde uitdrukking om elke jaar te praat van Interskole as die grootste skolesportbyeenkoms in die wêreld en om statistieke op te noem van elke skool se oorwinnings en neerlae.

Daarom het ek besluit om liewer eer te bring aan die effek van hierdie groot gebeurtenis.

As ek kyk na die invloed wat Interskole op elke deelnemer het, is dit iets waaraan die statistieke van die afgelope honderd jaar nie reg kan laat geskied nie.

Interskole is iets wat aan elke leerder in ons skole ‘n geleentheid bied om inklusiewe uitmuntendheid te ervaar. Elke leerder het die geleentheid om te voel dat hy deel van iets yslik is.

Dit gee aan daardie leerder wat dalk nie op akademiese gebied uitstaande prestasies lewer nie, die geleentheid om te voel hy is deel van ‘n gebeurtenis wat ‘n dorp laat stilstaan. Vir die leerder wat uit omstandighede kom waarvan hy wil ontvlug, bied hierdie sportgeleentheid die kans om op ‘n rugbyveld, hokkieveld of netbalbaan te hoor hoe ondersteuners se aanmoediging vir hóm en sý span bedoel is.

Is dít nie waaroor dit eintlik gaan nie?

Kom ons drie skole – ons leerders, ouers, vriende, oudstudente en almal wat hierdie geleentheid vanjaar meemaak – vier vanjaar die kans wat ons het om die wêreld ‘n beter plek te maak met hierdie ongelooflike gebeurtenis wat die Paarl hierdie naweek beleef.

It was a great honour to represent Western Province at the Craven Week, as it was always a dream of mine. Craven Week is a great stepping stone for each and every schoolboy player and it’s an arena where I’ve learnt a lot about myself.

What has been the highlight of your rugby career?

Winning Interschools after a long, dry run, with the cherry on top to be selected for the SA Schools side a week later.

What is your captain’s philosophy?

To always stay true to myself and lead by example. If I can play well, then 80% of my job is done and the rest will follow.

How do you feel about being named captain?

It’s a massive privilege captaining Paarl Boys’ High, as the school has a great rugby heritage and previous greats that wore the same jersey.

What are your strengths as a player and a captain?

I enjoy being in a team environment, as I draw my strength from the team and the mates I play with; after all, they are the ones that push you to your limits and bring the best out of me.

How has your team’s season been?

It’s been a good season up to now. One has to say that we still have a few games left and we would love to end our season in the way we wish to.

It was a great learning experience to compete against the best rugby players in the country in my age group and very special to win the tournament after a tough week.

What has been the highlight of your rugby career?

It was my dream to play for Paarl Gim’s First Rugby Team, so to play for Paarl Gim every Saturday was a highlight and honour for me.

What is your captain’s philosophy?

To always lead by example and to motivate my players to always give their best, no matter what the situation on the field.

How do you feel about being named captain?

It is a massive honour and privilege to captain Paarl Gim’s First Rugby Team, as we are a trendsetting school with so much tradition and a proud history of over 150 Years.

What are your strengths as a player and a captain?

I always strive to set the right example and lead in humbleness. I hope my team mates and fellow learners experience me as this.

How has your team’s season been?

We’ve had a very successful season, thus far only losing one game of the fourteen played and really growing together as a team each week.

Tell us the make-up of Saturday’s team.

Within our team, we function as a group of 30 players that make up two sides. We stand as one within the squad there are various characteristics and skills each guy brings to the plate. There is a good mix of experience and exciting new prospects.

Currently we have only Wian van Zyl and Bernard Swart not available through injury from our squad, but despite that we have a good balanced side that will represent the school with honour and pride.

What is the recent history between the two school?

The history between the two schools date back hundreds of years and it still is a rich culture and comradery amongst the two schools. Obviously, the respective schools have produced various Springboks and provincial players, so it’s a great breeding ground for SA rugby, and I think Interschools played a massive role in that.

What is the recent history between the two schools?

Although Boys’ High won last year, Paarl Gim dominated Interschools the last ten years, although the scores were always close and could have gone either way on the day.

What are you expecting from your opponents?

Obviously they have a great team this year, as they always do. So they will be coming out more hungry as ever to make their school proud and represent their school to the best of their ability. They have a few influential players within their team and it will be a spectacle come Interschools.

What has been your message to your team this week?

Try and stay calm at all times and not get side-tracked by all the off-field distractions.

For many of the boys it will be their last Interschools and they are really keen on making it special.

What are your plans for the future?

I’ve decided to stay at Western Province as it is really beloved to me in all respects to the various unions.

What are you expecting from your opponents?

They are currently the No.1 ranked team in South Africa and the encounter will be very hard and physical. A team with a 55-game winning streak deserves the necessary respect.

What has been your message to your team this week?

They must really enjoy every moment during this action-packed week and it’s a huge privilege to be part of this special occasion, but come Saturday, to give their all to our school and supporters.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to continue with my rugby career as long as possible and study B Com (Marketing).

They have been orphaned or reffered to a place of safety such as ours by the Children’s Court. Increase Your Level Of Intrinsic Motivation Have you lost your motivation in the middle of a long season? Have you ever wondered what you could do to have greater motivation? There have probably been times where you had difficulty getting psyched up for a competition or pushing through the drudgery of training.

What exactly is motivation?

Motivation is the mental process that initiates, sustains or guides an athlete’s behavior (training, approach to competition, managing adversity, performance).

There are two types of motivation in sports: intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation refers to athletic behavior that is driven by internal or personally meaningful rewards (opportunities to explore, learn, and actualise potential).

Intrinsically motivated athletes participate in sport for reasons such as the enjoyment of playing their sport, the challenge of competition and reaching new personal levels, skill improvement, exploration of potential, etc.

Intrinsically motivated athletes typically concentrate on skill improvement and their growth as athletes.

Extrinsic motivation refers to athletic behavior that is geared toward earning external rewards or to avoid punishment.

Extrinsically motivated athletes participate in sport for motives such as external rewards (trophies, scholarships, media attention, accolades) or to avoid negative consequences (being benched, falling out of favour with coach, disapproval of parent).

Extrinsically motivated athletes tend to focus on the outcomes of athletic contests.

Which type of reward is better: intrinsic or extrinsic?

Extrinsic rewards are a fundamental component in competitive sports. Could you imagine professional football without a Super Bowl? Or eliminating ESPN to reduce the public attention athletes receive? Or even, if athletic scholarships were no longer offered by college programs?

Extrinsic rewards, when used correctly, can be beneficial to athletes.

can actually demotivate you and negatively affect your performance.

When your primary motivation is extrinsic, you may sense a greater amount of competitive pressure and anxiety, compare yourself unfavourably to other athletes, devalue your self-worth, find it difficult to deal with failure, or view your sport more like “work” than a “game.”

Ideally, you want the majority of your motivation to be intrinsic.

If you increase your level of intrinsic motivation, you will be better equipped to focus in the present. You will be able to maintain a consistent level of motivation through the course of the season.

You will be more focused during practice. You will experience less stress when mistakes are made. You will be more confident and you will enjoy playing your sport more.

So, you can greatly improve your performance and experience on the field by choosing more effective motivation strategies.

Try these tips to increase your level of intrinsic motivation: Tip #1: Create personally meaningful goals and performance objectives. Challenge yourself to improve one aspect of performance each practise or training session (technique, conditioning, physical skill or mental skill).

Tip #2: Participate in sports for the right reasons – because you love to compete! Pursue what you want to pursue. Take back control of your athletic life!
