Spending 11 hours in the office could be the death of you A recent study by the University College London (UCL) found that those spending more than 11-hours at work have a 67% increased risk of having a heart attack when compared to those working an average 8-hour day. A separate study undertaken by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health found that .these workers are also twice as likely to suffer from major depression with a 2.5 higher chance of suffering at least one adverse depressive episode after six years. Already South Africa is regarded as the 3rd most workaholic nation in the world with a 2011 study by Ipsos Global and

Reuters finding that a mere 47% of the country’s working population take their necessary vacation days. Resolution Health Medical Scheme warns that with a growing body of evidence irrevocably proving the link between long working hours and potentially life-threatening health complications, it becomes clear that corporate South Africa must take an increasing amount of responsibility for the health of their employees. These employees are more likely to ignore obvious health warning signs to avoid taking a day off and are less likely to seek medical advice, believing that the problem will simply disappear in time.

Voorpos Primary

SPCA and Star Bakery

Voorpos has only been participating in galas for the past two years. Our swimmers have gone from strength to strength. The photographs show Bulumko Ngoqo and Aphiwe Henisi at a recent gala hosted by Southernwood Primary School.

At the SPCA they were welcomed by the friendly staff and chirpy pets. Learners were given a talk by Melanie on how to care for pets. They also had an opportunity to hold the puppies. This was an exciting experience for many. Our learners showed their love and kindness by donating tins of pet food. Learners were given a guided tour by Alan of Star Bakery. We were shown the process of making bread. This was a fascinating experience for both the learners and educators. Each learner was treated to a loaf of fresh, yummy Star bread. This was a day well spent.

Big smile

The lucky winner of our designer chocolate mousse cake raffle was Abululeka Gxwala. In the photograph he shows off his scrumptious prize.

Voorpos Pre-Primary: As part of Life Skills, the Grade 0 and Grade R learners were taken on an excursion to the SPCA and to Star Bakery.

Spelling Stars

The top speller from each grade was selected to compete in the SACEE Spelling Bee held at Clarendon Primary on 12 March. Our team consisted of (from left) Sibabalwe Madayizana (Grade 7), Sange Tshakumane (Grade 6), Sakhe Pindani (Grade 5) and Asanele Ncede (Grade 4).

Kampioenskappe.

World Read Aloud Day Grade 5 Adventure Camp

On 5 March, Lilyfontein Foundation Phase learners demonstrated their love for reading when they celebrated “World Read Aloud Day”. A read aloud competition was held where readers competed against each other for the coveted title of ‘Read Aloud Champ”! The entrants read with great gusto, enthusiasm and drama. Keep reading!

This five day camp is all about beach studies and awareness. Group dynamics, beach hikes, snorkelling, general knowledge quizzes, fish study, sand sculptures and developing leadership skills are all vital parts of this camp.

Azania Magwaca, Liyahluma Simelane and Christine Bollaert-Davies in Grade Two.

Band Day was held on 1st March for all Grade 6-12 learners involved in either steel drum or marimba bands. We moved our instruments out under the Flamboyant trees in the front quad and then proceeded to make music!! Interspersed with some hilarious team building games we managed to learn two new pieces that combined both steel pans and marimbas, Chariots of Fire and the Taco Bell Canon (apologies to Pachelbel). After several practising sessions, a break for delicious burgers from the Tuckshop and more team games, we played the new songs for the parents who gathered in the quad to hear the results of our day! Although extremely hot it was a great day with the musicians getting to know each other and learning to perform together.

Vernon Kaschula Grade 12 and Xola Nogcinisa Grade 6 work through the music together.

Marco Siebert plays under the trees (Grade 6) with Mrs Jacobs at the helm.

Museum visit

It never rains at a campout! The Gonubie Primary’s Marimba Band started the year off with a bang. The Band has already played as guests at the Cathcart Bi-Annual Expo at the beginning of February as well as at the Blue Lagoon Hotel on 20 February at the Reach for a Dream lunch. They now have their eyes focused on their next major event to be held in Johannesburg in early August, namely to participate in the 3rd Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival. We wish them the best of luck and hope that they will be as successful in this event as they were last year.

Top 8 Gala swimmers

Recently, the Grade 4’s went on an excursion to the East London Museum. They had a great time learning about the history of this wonderful town. They were mesmerized at the way East London looked and developed from where it was over 100 years ago to how it looks and functions today. For some of the learners, it was their first visit to the Museum and hopefully not their last! Getting all the details written down are, from left to right, sitting: Tanit Horrmann and Olathe Dlanga. Standing: Zanazo Luvono, Sibu Ndzamela and KB Vakele. In the background are some unknown ladies from long, long ago!

On Friday 28 February, Gonubie Primary’s Fathers’ Club organised a Campout on the Rugby fields. Families arrived in their droves and Dad’s had their tent erecting skills put firmly to the test! Most camping expeditions seem to get rained on, but the rain that eventually bucketed down could not dampen the excitement and enthusiasm of more than 50 tenting families. There were floodlit games, braais and enough games to suit everyone’s taste and a fun and damp time was had by parents and kids alike.

The Top 8 Gala took place at the Joan Harrison Pool recently (Wednesday 5 March). The 9 swimmers that represented Gonubie Primary in various age groups ranging from U8 to U13 swam very well and did us proud. From left to right they are: front row: Elsje Jacobs, Robyn Becker and Bryce Burét. Second Row: Matthew Raath, Paige Schonknecht and Duncan Birtwistle. Back Row: Josh Brown, Callum van Rooyen and Layla Vahed.

Focus on the game

On Saturday 22 February, Gonubie Primary’s U11 boys took part in the annual Pro10 Cricket Festival hosted by Crewe Primary. Having won the Tournament last year, the pressure was on GPS this year to come up with a repeat performance – which they did in fine style, beating 3 other rival schools on their way to winning the event for the second year in a row. Focused on

the task at hand is Langa Mluma (front) while Hlumelo Zantsi (wearing helmet) looks a little more pensive.

Regional athletics champs 6 Athletes from Gonubie Primary were selected for the Eastern Cape Championships held in Mthatha on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 March. They were Emily Raath, Bontle Thinyane, Nathan Johnson, Tamike van Dyk, Kanya Gcanga and Nnamdi Uwah. A very hectic and busy two days ensued and our athletes aquitted themselves very well in the unfamiliar conditions. Emily, Bontle and Nnamdi have qualified to go to Nationals on 20-22 March in Paarl. GPS is very proud of them.

MARCH 2014 7

The Grade 3 girls voted for the new members of the house teams for 2014. The girls chose peers who they believed to be strong leaders, positive role models and most importantly good friends to all. Congratulations to our House Teams.

As part of a pilot project from the Department of Education, Clarendon Prep is fortunate to be running the IIAL (Incremental Introduction of African Languages). We now boast two passionate isiXhosa teachers at the Prep. Ms Filita and Mrs Mtsaka are raising the standards of isiXhosa which we are proud of.

A highlight for our Grade 1-3 girls is the annual Children’s Day. The Prep joined forces with Clarendon and Selborne Primary Schools to create a carnival atmosphere for all to enjoy. Thank you to all staff, parents and businesses that contributed to make this a day to remember. The proceeds of this event are donated to less privileged children in East London.

Dr Jen Brüntrup-Taylor was our special guest speaker and she talked to all of the Grade 1-3 girls about leading a healthy lifestyle. Understanding the consequences of the choices we make is an important message we need to instil in our children. We have challenged our Preppies to ‘eat a rainbow’ every day!
