Q: Tell us more about the play.

A: I am rehearsing for the the incredibe play The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, by Athol Fugard, which opens the end op the month in the historic Fugard Theatre in District 6 in Cape Town. The part was a dream, because Athol, at 84, is the director. This is an incredible privilege and experience. I acted in his play People Are Living There last year in the Market Theater in Johannesburg, and when the opportunity came my way to work under his direction, it almost too good to be true!

Q: How does the play compare with Dis Koue Kos, Skat?

Mention the name Anna-Mart van der Merwe and people usually swoon slightly – the beloved and diverse (and beautiful) South African actress garners admiration for whatever she tackles – with movies from Die Storie van Klara Viljee to the brand-new Dis Koue Kos, Skat, she is a winner with her audiences. We caught up with Anna-Mart on her way to a repetition for her new play,The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, in Cape Town, over lattes at the lovely Lust, halfway between Paarl en Franschhoek, where she lives these days.

A: Dis Koue Kos, Skat was a great experience – for a fifty-something to play the lead in a romantic comedy was quite a thing! I was astounded by the younger generation actors’ totally different visual frames of references, and learned a lot from them. Die movie gets released countrywide at the end of the month.

Q: You became a soapie star when 7de Laan started. Movies, soapies, stage – which is your favourite?

A: Goodness, yes – my first TV movie was made before there was something such as a South African

soapie! I think the stage will have to come first, if I had to choose. There is just something about the process and dynamics – also with the audience – that makes it magical acting medium.

I would have liked to be part of a theatre company in Europe. I think it must be a fantastic experience to grow as stage actor in such a setup.

Q: Was drama a calling?

A: It was, but only late in my school career. I first studied languages at Stellenbosch, where I took drama classes with Babs Laker on Friday afternoons, and then drama at UCT. After that, I joined the then Truk and started my stage acting career … and that was it.

Q: What do you to do relax?

A: Oh, I love to walk – there is nothing quite like the feeling of earth under my feet. As a born and bred Vredendaller, I am rather earthy in my lifestyle.

Q: Favourite music?

A: First in my head: Sade. Gregorian Chants. Jazz.

Q: Favourite book?

A: The über classic Narciss and Goldmund, by Herman Hesse. Oh yes – The Bone People, by Keri Hulme.

I have always been a fan of almonds – nutty toasted almonds tossed into salads or consumed by the handful as a snack, made into almond meal and used to bake cookies and cakes.

Almonds have many wonderful nutritional benefits, as they are very nutrient rich. I had an almond tree in my garden and I couldn’t wait for it to go into flower. I adored the fragrant pink and white flowers that covered the tree. I love that they are delicately flavoured and versatile and available all year round.

I recently discovered almond milk at the Good Food & Wine Show in Johannesburg and decided to do some experimenting with it. I use both the sweetened and unsweetened almond milk.

You can use it in making quiches, blinis, flapjacks, bread-andbutter pudding, ricotta, hot cakes, French toast, white sauce, smoothies, ice-cream, rice pudding and Panacotta, and also for soaking oats and mixing into scrambled eggs, and a lot more – it is even really yummy in tea and coffee! It can also be a substitute for dairy milk for those who have a lactose intolerance.

Almond milk is also suitable for people following a vegan diet.

As almond milk contains no cholesterol, it is also recommended for people suffering from heart disease or high cholesterol, and the unsweetened variety has a low glycaemic index (GI) with no added sugar, making it a suitable option for health conscious consumers.

Almond milk combines the superfood health benefits of almonds with a delicious taste. It is packed with calcium as well as vitamin D and E to support strong bones and healthy skin, making it easier to manage a healthy lifestyle.

I’m happy to see that it is GMO free, with no additives, MSG or preservatives. People are definitely paying more attention to their health, and so we should.

Raspberry and almond smoothie Serves 2 • 2 ½ cups almond milk (sweetened or unsweetened) • 4 ice cubes • 1 tbls runny honey • ¾ cup fresh or frozen raspberries • 1 tbls ground almonds • Place all the ingredients into liquidiser and blitz till smooth.

• Pour into tall glasses and enjoy.

Tip: you can strain the smoothie before you serve it.

Health & Wellbeing 8 HEALTHY EATING GOALS Small changes can make a big difference to your health. Try incorporating at least six of the eight goals below into your diet. Commit to incorporating one new healthy eating goal each week over the next six weeks.

Make half your plate fruits and vegetables: Choose red, orange, and dark-green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables for your meals. Add fruit to meals as part of main or side dishes or as dessert. The more colourful you make your plate, the more likely you are to get the vitamins, minerals, and fibre your body needs to be healthy.

Make half the grains you eat whole grains: An easy way to eat more whole grains is to switch from refined grain food to wholegrain food, for example by eating wholewheat bread instead of white bread.

Read the ingredients list and choose products that list wholegrain ingredients first. Look for things like whole wheat, brown rice, bulgur, buckwheat, oatmeal, rolled oats, quinoa or wild rice.

Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk: Both have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but fewer calories and less saturated fat.

Choose a variety of lean protein foods: Meat, poultry, seafood, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts and seeds are considered part of the protein foods group. Select leaner cuts of ground beef (where the label says 90% lean or higher), turkey breast, or chicken breast.

Compare sodium in foods: Use the nutrition facts label to choose lower sodium versions of foods like soup, bread and frozen meals.

Select canned foods labeled “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added.”

Drink water instead of sugary drinks: Cut calories by drinking water or unsweetened beverages. Soda, energy drinks and sports drinks are a major source of added sugar and calories in diets. Try adding a slice of lemon, lime or watermelon or a splash of 100% juice to your glass of water if you want some flavor.

Eat some seafood: Seafood includes fish (such as salmon, tuna and trout) and shellfish (such as crab, mussels and oysters). Seafood has protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids (heart-healthy fat). Adults should try to eat at least eight ounces a week of a variety of seafood.

Children can eat smaller amounts of seafood, too.

Cut back on solid fats: Eat fewer foods that contain solid fats. The major sources of such foods are cakes, cookies and other desserts (often made with butter, margarine or shortening), pizza, processed and fatty meats (e.g. sausages, hot dogs, bacon, ribs) and ice cream. http://www.fitness.gov/eat-healthy/how-to-eat-healthy/

Bestmed’s You’ve Got the Power Challenge!

Launched last year with 63 schools across the country, ‘We’ve Got the Power Campaign’ has now expanded.

This year, healthy living will be demonstrated not only by learners, but their families too. This campaign will run from 1 August up until 30 September 2016.

The teams are expected to showcase the benefits of healthy living by creating unique, cool and fun music videos. The campaign is both educational and rewarding. We have awesome prizes up for winners, and these include cash prizes for runnersup and other spot prizes. The overall winning school will, over and above its cash prize, receive a MUSIC CONCERT featuring Richard Stirton, Gavin Edwards, Almur Marais and Jeremy Olivier from The Voice SA.” You’ve Got the Power campaign challenge underpins Bestmed’s focus on preventative healthcare, which is validated by its wellness pillars of Be Active, Be

Safe, Be Nutri-wise, Be Fin-fit and Be Happy. The campaign challenge inspires scholars and their families to incorporate these pillars into their daily lives, and demonstrate it in the music videos. “Who says you cannot be healthy and have fun? We received encouraging feedback from last year’s launch campaign where schools learnt quite a bit about healthy lifestyle activities and enjoyed the process. We are committed to continue educating children about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in all possible ways we can,” adds la Grange.

In last year’s challenge, the schools created a music video based on Jeremy Loop’s songs and this year the music videos will be based on an upbeat song composed by Bestmed. The children will be able to sing or lip-sync the song. The videos can include choreography and fun dance moves that are cool, energetic and happy.

With the aim of encouraging children to not only practise healthy lifestyle activities at school but also at home, this year Bestmed is including families to take

part in the challenge. la Grange cites, “Students spend their time both at school and at home therefore we would like them to continue practising their healthy lifestyle activities in all aspects of their lives. We also want to encourage their families to do the same.”

“We look forward to receiving awesome music videos, and good luck to everyone,” concludes la Grange.

You’ve Got the Power Challenge To become part of the challenge, visit www.ygtp.co.za for more information. Students are required to create a music video based on Bestmed’s song and demonstrate how healthy living can make for a better life within the school and family context.

Teachers and families can also participate in the video as the aim is for the whole school to have fun. Once the video is completed, it can be uploaded on the site before the competition closes on 30 September 2016.

All provincial winners were present at the festival, which was held in Kuilsriver in the Western Cape.

The standard was extremely high, but the Glenwood Prep girls responded well with victories over Goedehoop (Mpumalanga) and Rustenburg (North West), whilst drawing an exciting game against Vastrap from the North West. The Glenwood Prep girls thoroughly enjoyed the standard of netball and the honour of representing KZN Primary Schools.

Rugby Star

Glenwood Prep chess team shines Glenwood Preparatory’s chess team recently participated in the finals of the annual Durban and Districts Chess tournament. The five-strong team played against all the various zonal winners, all of whom enjoyed a day of exciting chess. At the end of the tournament, Glenwood Prep placed a close 2nd notwithstanding their No.1 player and African continent U14 champion being unavailable, due to representing KZN in the World Maths Championships in Thailand.

Liam Prinsloo of Glenwood Preparatory School recently captained the U12 KZN Craven Week rugby team. Liam, who is a talented fly half, has excelled this year, and has an exciting rugby future ahead of him.

MORNINGSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 303 2413 (e) mornpri@mweb.co.za Grade 6 & 7 tour to Entabeni Crane Sanctuary One hundred and five Grade 6 and 7 learners from Morningside Primary spent three wonderful days at the Entabeni Crane Sanctuary, on a farm in the Kamberg district near Mooi River. Upon arrival, they were separated into groups and given a dorm, which was to be their abode for the next three days.

The facilitators were confident, relaxed and well versed in their field of interest, but were always in control, applying strict safety precautions to all the activities in which they were involved. Nevertheless, the learners enjoyed every minute of the outing with them, participating in archery, a rope obstacle course, a 5km hike in the mountains to discover ancient Bushmen paintings, and an orienteering course that steered them through the muddy wetlands of the sanctuary itself.

In the evenings the learners were put through their paces in the “Entabeni Olympics” that challenged them to work in groups while achieving certain tasks. Another group was taken to “Stalk the lantern” in the forest nearby, but plummeting temperatures around 0°C during the evening of the second day put paid to this idea and the facilitators were forced to improvise, which they did very well.

The visit to the Sanctuary itself was fascinating, with everyone learning new information about the Blue Cranes, Crowned Cranes and Wattle Cranes that have been reared here. The up-close-and-personal encounter with these large and powerful birds was an event that all will remember.

WESTVILLE SENIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 266 5218 (e) sharon@wsps.co.za August Star Of The Month Michael Maddocks is a Grade 6 pupil at Westville Senior Primary School and is chosen as our Star Of The Month for August.

Michael has been a progressive athlete since a young and tender age. He began his sports involvement with running and then swiftly moved on to karate, swimming, cricket and rugby. He is dedicated to improving himself both on and off the field.

Michael is involved in all sports and is producing excellent academic results too.

This year he entered for the first time and completed the Midmar Mile in excellent time.

He has made the PADSA team and thereafter the KZN Junior Sharks Team in rugby. He went

on tour with the Junior Sharks to Vryheid and scored a try on this tour. He has advanced further in athletics with hurdles and has made provincial level.

Michael is also very involved in music and is steadily progressing as a drummer.

He has worked his way into the Marimba A Band and has recently gone on tour with the school to the International Steelpan and Marimba Convention in Johannesburg.

Michael is an extremely dedicated and determined young man with great leadership qualities. He works hard at improving himself and looks forward to a career as a professional sportsman.

WINSTON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 031 767 3214 (e) ginal@wppschool.co.za Gymnastics Demi Robertson, a Grade 5 pupil at Winston Park Primary School, represented KZN at the National Gymnastics Championships in Pinetown during the holidays and came 3rd overall out of 15 girls in Level 7 (10 & u). She came 1st on vault and 3rd on beam. Demi started gymnastics at the age of 5 and was chosen to represent KZN every year since she started.

She came 2nd in Level 3, and 1st in Level 4, 2nd in Level 6 and 3rd in Level 7. Last year she was awarded her KZNGU Half Colours with Merit.

Demi is currently on Level 8 and on the Squad Team training for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She trains 13 hours a week and is passionate about gymnastics and hopes to represent South Africa at the Olympics in the future.

DURBAN GIRLS’ COLLEGE (t) 031 268 7200 (e) marketing@dgc.co.za Durban Girls’ College Mini Olympics The Durban Girls’ College Senior Primary was involved in a Mini Olympics event held on our school field.

Every class dressed up as a country, for example Greece, Mexico, China, Italy and South Africa. Each class sang the national anthem of the country they were dressed as to the other classes and spectators and then paraded around the field waving their flags and singing whilst the Olympic Anthem played in the background.

Later on, the girls competed within their grades, participating in activities such as the three-legged race, tug-of-war, water balloon throwing and hoola-hooping.

During this event, Durban Girls’ College was also involved in the “Torch Relay” that took place with other schools on the Berea, including Morningside Primary, in support and recognition of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This relay was a symbolic ‘passing of the torch’ and as each school received the baton it was carried by pupils into the school and a torch was lit on the school premises. Much fun was had by all present and the glorious sunshine made this day perfect for a Mini Olympics!

Matthew Hamilton (17) in Grade 12, who hails from Mount Edgecombe, was selected for SA Schools and Men’s Youth Water Polo.

In previous years, Hamilton has been a part of the KZN Boys U18A Team, as well as the U17 and U18 SA Water Polo side.

His next tournament will see him participating in the 3rd FINA Men’s Youth Water Polo Championships to be held in Podgorica, Montenegro at the end of August.

Sanele Nohamba (17) in Grade 11, who is also from the Eastern Cape, currently living at the DHS boarding establishment Blackmore House, was selected for the U18 SA A Schools Rugby side that will play against England, Wales, France and Italy from 12 to 20 August in Cape Town and Paarl.

Hlumelo Mekuto (17) in Grade 12, from the Eastern Cape, currently living at the DHS boarding establishment Blackmore House, was selected for SA Schools U18B Hockey. He recently participated in the Tri-Nations series in Pretoria.

GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL (t) 031 205 5241 (e) erasmush@glenwoodhighschool.co.za Actively Against initiative Glenwood is supporting the Jes Foord Actively Against Initiative. This initiative was formed in 2012, after the marketing manager at the time made major headway getting the awareness surrounding Jes’s message into the schools of KZN. With Jes’s message, the foundation was able to reach the hearts of many young sportsmen in these schools who opted to wear green shorts in order to show their support for the foundation and what it stands for.

The Glenwood 1st XV Rugby Team played in the Green shorts against Grey College last weekend, showing their support for this initiative.

Jes Foord foundation handbag project Glenwood took on the Jes Foord Handbag Project as part of the Women’s Month celebrations in August. Jes’s initiative was to celebrate 60 years of women’s month, packing 60 bags per day for 31 days which would help 1860 survivors. The Glenwood boys and their parents collected more than 100 packed bags. Durbanite Jes Foord became a heroine to many South Africans when she showed courage and selflessness by establishing The Jes Foord Foundation (JFF), following her traumatic rape by four men in 2008. The Handbag Project is an initiative where new or used handbags are donated, containing items that can assist a rape victim during the initial reporting process at the police station.

Target Shooting SAARA KZN held their annual provincial open championships at Hilton College on 5 to 6 August.

The KZN shooters shot some excellent scores and in particular the Glenwood High School athletes.

They enjoyed the whole project and especially being able to sit in a classroom with the children, hearing their stories and aspirations and getting to know each one of them.

Hearing their stories helped our students to be grateful for the life their parents have given them.

The experience was lifechanging.

For the fifth consecutive year, Northlands Girls’ High School has once again been selected for the Destiny Good Schools Report for 2016.

Published in the June edition of the magazine, this annual feature profiles the leading public and private schools in South Africa. Twelve public schools from KwaZuluNatal were listed, with Northlands Girls’ High School and Danville Park Girls’ High School being the only two girls’ schools in the Durban North area to be featured.

“Maintaining this level of excellence year on year can only be ascribed to the dedication and commitment from the staff and pupils who continue to strive for – and deliver – excellent academic, as well as sport and cultural achievements. We are very proud,” says principal at Northlands Girls’ High School, Andrew Graaf.
