AWSUM gesels met Retief Goosen oor sy skooljare

Retief Goosen (The Goose), oud HTS Tom Naudé - leerder en wenner van twee Amerikaanse Ope Gholftoernooie, praat oor sy skooljare in Polokwane. Behalwe vir sy 36 oorwinnigs as professionele gholfer en sy sewe PGA Toer - oorwinnings, haal Retief ook die World Golf Hall of Fame in 2019.

Ons moet begin deur te vra oor jou skoolloopbaan. Wat sal jy altyd van jou skool onthou?

Wat ek onthou, is dat die onderwysers by my skool streng was. As jy stout was die klas, het jy pakslae gekry. Daar was `n paar onderwysers wat gholf gespeel het en ek het saam met hulle gespeel, maar ek het nog steeds deugeloop as ek stout was.

Aan watter sport het jy op skool deelgeneem?

Vir my was dit net gholf elke dag. Op laerskool het ek wel rugby gespeel. Ek was binne senter, maar het van 12 jaar oud op gholf begin fokus deur gholfboeke wat in die huis was, te lees - onder andere boeke van Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus en Gary Player. Daai dae was daar nie videos nie, so ek moes in `n spiëel oefen alles wat ek in die boeke geleer het.

Watter tipe ou was jy op skool?

Ek was maar `n stil ou op skool en my eie ding gedoen. Ek was `n prefek in my laaste jaar, so dit was lekker om stoute ouens by onderwysers aan te kla.

Vertel ons meer oor jou grootwordjare in Polokwane. Polokwane was maar klein tydens my grootwordjare. Ek kon met my fiets orals heen ry. Ons het naby genoeg aan Polokwane Gholfklub gebly dat ek met my gholfstokke en sak op my fiets kon ry en vinnig nege gate na skool kon speel.

Wat is die beste raad wat jy al ooit ontvang het en wat jy vandag met ons lesers wil deel?

Niks kom verniet nie. Jy moet hard werk.

As jy nie `n gholfspeler was nie, watter sport sou jy wou beoefen? Gholf was alles vir my. As dit nie gewerk het nie, sou ek seker nie `n ander sport beoefen het nie. Tydens `n onderhoud met die Polokwane Review vertel Retief: “Ons het altyd vir ure gholfballe agter in die tuin geslaan en my ma het ons uitgetrap, want ons het haar gras uitgeslaan” onthou Retief. “Ek het my liefde vir gholf by my pa geleer en dan natuurlik by Francois my broer ook. Ek het vir hom gecaddy,” skerts Retief.

Wat sou jy sê vat dit van `n speler om die hoogste vlak van `n sportsoort te bereik en daar te bly?

“Dissipline en harde werk! My pa het geglo dat as jy iets wil hê, moet jy daarvoor werk en voluit daarvoor gaan. Hy het vir jou die geleentheid gegee, maar jy moes ‘n sukses daarvan maak. My pa se werketiek is iets wat oorgespoel het na my gholf. Met talent en harde werk, kan jy net suksesvol wees en ek is dankbaar daarvoor,” vertel Retief vir die Polokwane Review.

In dieselfde berig, berig die Polokwane Review dat oom Theo Goosen, Retief se pa, op 21 Desember 2022 op die ouderdom van 89 oorlede is. Tot die dag van sy dood het Oom Theo gholfraad met Retief gedeel en hy onthou hoe sy pa ‘n paar keer in Amerika en Engeland gaan gholf kyk het. “Sy tydsberekening was nie altyd so goed met die raad nie, en as ek nie goed gespeel het nie, het hy sommer sy vliegtuigkaartjie vervroeg en teruggevlieg.”

Retief Goosen is as 16 - jarige deur weerlig op die golfbaan raakgeslaan toe hy en sy neef Henri `n rondte gholf op `n Woensdagmiddag gespeel het. Toe dit op die vyfde gat begin reën, het hulle gaan skuil onder `n afdak, maar toe die reën opklaar, het hulle verder gaan speel. Dis toe wat hy deur die weerlig geslaan is en 20 minute later in die hosipitaal wakker geword het. Nadat sy neef gaan hulp soek het by die klubhuis het hy `n dokter gekry wat toevallig gholf gespeel het en Retief vertel dié dokter het sy lewe daardie dag gered. Na 3 weke wat hy nie skoene kon aantrek nie as gevolg van sy brandwonde, was hy terug op die gholfbaan en toe het sy golf vlamgevat, want mens besef jy kon dood gewees het.

Destyds het Retief die volgende wenk aan `n jong opkomende gholfer gegee: Hou jou fokus en neem die spel net hou vir hou, Vergeet van die toernooi en vergeet waar jy op die punteleêr lê.

Athletics Inter House 2023 Readathon 2023

The annual Inter House Athletics took place early on in Term 1. Learners from the various houses participated in the various field and track events and showcased their athletic ability. The athletes braved the very hot conditions and performed admirably in a fun and competitive manner.

The school spirit was amazing as those learners who did not compete, sang and cheered their fellow learners on throughout the day.

The positive spirit and energy was great to see and a fun filled day was had by all learners and staff at Midrand High.

City of Joburg have introduced the School Mobireadathon Competion for all High Schools. A member of the Joburg library came to Midrand High School to talk and encourage learners enter. This competition aimed at encouraging productive use of mobile devices to find educational digital content will run from February 10th, when learners from all grades can register and participate until April 25th.

This program combines both digital literacy and reading development objectives. Learners will gain skills in navigating mobile devices for more than using social media and games, but for their education.

• It was an international event, run by Abu Dhabi AJP 600 Tour - Johannesburg Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 - Gi & No-Gi.

• The Tournament was held on Sunday the 12th of February 2023 from 7 am at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

• There were 34 Teams/ JiuJitsu clubs that entered the competition, Shafeeq’s Club WSG (Wiekus Swart Grappling) came 7th as Best Academy for the wins of the day.

• Shafeeq took 2nd place and won the silver medal in his belt and weight division.

• Shafeeq has been doing JiuJitsu for 8 years. He started at the age of 4 years old.

• His belt grading ceremony was held on the 10th of December 2022. He was awarded his new belt, he went from grey to yellow, and he jumped 6 belt levels at this ceremony.

Shafeeq Patel participated in an international jiu-jutsu tournament, where they competed against fighters from all over the world. Shafeeq placed second in his weight and belt division, and won a silver medal. Also, out of 34 teams his team came 7th. He was injured in the final match, but still came out victorious. Vilandre is no stranger to the Reddford family, having held management positions as a coordinator and Deputy Head at Reddford House for most of her professional career. She started her teaching career at a government school after obtaining her teaching qualification from the North West University of Potchefstroom. Vilandre completed several courses such as Teaching with Technology, Thinking Skills, Reggio Emilia, and Safeguarding in Education. Vilandre’s experience in education stretches from the Foundation Phase to Matric and she has taught various subjects over the years. In 2020, she relocated to the UK where she spent just over two years in the field of Education, gaining international experience. Her focus was on attendance, pastoral care, safeguarding, and discipline.

Li-Mari Dekker en Wiepke Schoeman het hul goed van hul taak gekwyt tydens die World Athletics Cross Country Championships wat in Bathurst, Australië, plaasgevind het.

Li-Mari eindig eerste van die Suid-Afrikaanse atlete en behaal ‘n algehele 32ste posisie met ‘n tyd van 23:51s in die vroue o.20 6km wedloop. Wiepke Schoeman plaas 45ste en is tweede van die Suid-Afrikaanse atlete met ‘n tyd van 25:14s.

Hul afrigter, mnr. Willie Engelbrecht, is besonders trots op die twee dogters se prestasie en is opgewonde oor wat hul nog in die toekoms gaan vermag. Baie geluk Li-Mari en Wiepke!

Zwarrie-skaak maak die regte skuiwe

Meya Snyders en Stiaan Grunenfelder in graad 9 het aan die S.A. Junior Skaak Kampioenskap by Wild Coast Sun in Port Edwards tydens Desember 2022 deelgeneem.

Meya Snyders was deel van die o.16 A-span wat met die goue medalje wegloop en ook as die algehele wenners van hulle afdeling aagewys is.

Stiaan Grunenfelder het die o.16 A-opespan verteenwoordig wat ‘n algehele 2de plek in hulle afdeling wen.

Visser laat die skeie spat!

Hoërskool Zwartkop is besonders trots op Marghereet Visser wat al reeds vanjaar uitstekende prestasies by die jukskei inpalm.

Marghereet is gekies vir die Suid-Afrikaanse nasionale span, sy is ook die kapteine van die o.16 S.A. dogterspan én sy is opgeneem in die span wat in Junie 2023 aan ‘n toer na Namibië gaan meemaak.

Daarmee saam het Marghareet twee goue medaljes tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse jukskei kampioenskappe gewen.

Jessica, ‘n gimnastieksensasie!

Hoërskool Zwartkop se graad 9 gimnas, Jessica Maritz, is aangewys as die top Junior Olimpiese gimnas van Gauteng Noord vir die jaar 2022.

Sy is die algehele wenner in Gauteng Noord sowel as in Gauteng.

Tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe het Jessica ‘n 7de plek in die Junior Olimpiese afdeling behaal. Baie geluk, Jessica!

Eerstespan Rugby

Ons stel met trots aan julle bekend ons 1ste Rugby toerspan! Ons is baie opgewonde om te sien wat ons Swarrie eerstespan gaan doen hierdie jaar.

Hulle het al klaar een wedstryd agter die rug en staan hierdie jaar vir niemand terug nie. Baie geluk aan Zander Hattingh wat die spankaptein is vir 2023.

Kom ondersteun hulle asb. Hul gaan skaduwerk doen die 15e Maart by Pannarottis Lifestyle vanaf 18:30 om geld in te samel vir hul toer.

Northens Hokkie

Luyanda Vezi het die squad team vir Northens hokkie gemaak. Hulle gaan begin oefen en dan word finale span gekies.

Laerskool Wierdapark spog met 102 atlete wat deel geneem het aan die clusterbyeenkoms 20 Februarie 2023 te Hoërskool Zwartkop.

Hulle verdien 10 Goue, 12 silwer en 12 brons medaljes by die byeenkoms. Met die byeenkoms verbeter 5 atlete die rekord in hulle verskei items.

Zwarrie-sagtebaldogters presteer!

Drie van Hoërskool Zwartkop se sagtebaldogters het onlangs puik prestasies gekry.

Kenisha Wiese is gekies vir die Red Sox Noord-Gauteng Sagtebalspan wat in Desember aan die dogters o.19 Interstreeksagtebaltoernooi deelgeneem het. Na die toernooi behaal sy die Allstar span wat in September in Nederland gaan deelneem.

Hanneke Kruger is gekies vir die White Sox Noord-Gauteng Sagtebalspan wat ook aan die interstreektoernooi in Desember deelgeneem het. Sy verteenwoordig ook die Allstar span wat in September in Nederland gaan deelneem.

Briggitte Piepmeyer is gekies vir die Summer Games Gauteng Sagtebalspan. Hierdie span was ook die wenners van die National Summer Games. Briggitte is na afloop van die toernooi as die 3de beste pitcher aangewys.

Interne komitee onderteken erekode vir leierskap

Die Interne Komitee van Laerskool Rooihuiskraal onderteken jaarliks ‘n erekode wat hul verbind aan die verantwoordelikheid van leierskap. Die komitee bestaan slegs uit verkose Gr. 7 leerders en word gelei deur die Hoofleiers van die skool. Ons

Rooimiere sien dit as ‘n groot voorreg om in ‘n leierskap posisie te staan en ‘n voorbeeld te kan wees vir ons mede-leerders. Ons wens die Interne Komitee van 2023 net die beste toe vir die jaar wat voorlê!

Opedag 5 Mei 2023!

Laerskool Rooihuiskraal se kleuterskool besoeke het afgeskop en ons Pitstop-span het verskeie kleuterskole die afgelope twee weke besoek. Met die oog op ons opedag wat Vrydag, 5 Mei 2023 van 8:00 tot 10:00 plaasvind, is dit vir ons ‘n groot voorreg om leerders in omliggende kleuterskole bewus te maak van die beste skool in die suide! Ons hervat ons besoeke weer gedurende April!

Gesondheidsweek

Laerskool Rooihuiskraal bied jaarliks gedurende Februarie 'n gesondheidsweek aan waar ons leerders toerus en bemagtig vir die alledaagse lewe en die toekoms. In 2023 is ons tema: Omgewingsgesondheid. Daar word onder meer gefokus op herwinning, 'n doppie-projek waardeur doppies ingesamel word om rolstoele te voorsien aan mense in nood, sowel as klem op leerders se bydraes tot die instandhouding en versorging van ons skoolomgewing. Tydens 'n gesamentlike opening is die tema bekendgestel en die verantwoordelikheid om 'n impak te maak het afgeskop! Ons is ongelooflik trots op ons Rooimiere wat hul bydrae lewer in ons omgewing!
