Since they first burst onto the music scene in 2010, Bastille has become one of Britain’s most instantly recognisable chart-dominating bands. Their hits, like Pompeii and Of The Night, have become global festival anthems, blaring out from stages across the world from Cincinnati to Zurich, from Cape Town to London, From Joburg to Paris. AWSUM News caught up with them on their recent SA tour. Q You have gone from a relatively unknown four-piece band to one of the UK’s and the world’s best-loved indie bands, playing sell-out shows across the globe, at breakneck speed. How did Bastille happen? A It all started with Dan and his songs and his laptop in his bedroom. In about 2010 we started playing in pubs and things started to take off and build and build. Pompei happened, and we ended up being known around the world. Q Who are the Bastille band members?
Q What do you do to relax? What other things do you do? A Woody: I play football very badly. Will: Woody is kind of the dad of the group. Kyle: Yes! Woody can change a car tyre. I think Dan might be able to, but I certainly can’t. Dan: Well, I would try! Woody: Kyle can drive a forklift truck. Will: Although I can fly a plane. Q You also make the popular Bastille mixtapes. Any more in the pipeline?
A The band consists of lead singer Dan Smith, drummer Chris Wood, guitarist Will Farquarson, and bass-guitarist Kyle Simmons. Q What is the theme of Wild, Wild World?
A We are glad to let fans of our mixtape series, Other People’s Heartache, know that a fourth edition will be released soon. It’s a bunch of very weird covers, a bunch of new tunes, and some surprising collaborations. I can’t tell you what’s on it yet, but it will be out this year, with the new album to follow early next year.
A The loose theme of the album was that the world can seem quite messed up sometimes when you’re watching the news, but that everyone’s got to get up the next day and go to work – and that people, human relationships and friendships, stuff like that, are such nice positive things … there are no worthy intentions with the record or anything; we see each song as quite different. They are all little stories in and of themselves, but that was just a theme that seemed to just keep cropping up, in and amongst of the rest. I don’t know how escapable world events seem sometimes. It’s not meant to be really dramatic and it’s not a political record, it’s not meant to have any one kind of message – we’re just four idiots!
A We would love to simply keep producing music and if we can continue to play live as long as possible, that would be great. We are always thankful to be where we are now, but always looking to further expand and, of course, continue to write more records.
Q Who are your music icons?
A We’re all massive fans of the survival television show Naked And Afraid. We stumbled upon it on the tour bus and became completely obsessed with it.
A That’s such a tough question. The Fugees, The Beatles. Bowie, Prince and Hendrix. Also Bon Iver, James Blake, Kanye, Frank Ocean, Sigur Ros, Christine and the Queens, Rationale. Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend … I could just go on listing artists for ages. It would also be good to have some comedy there as well. Regina Spektor is awesome. She’s an incredible songwriter, and her voice is amazing.

An Eggscellent Dish!!!
The first time I ate frittata I must have been about seven years old. It was served to me by my friend Paula’s mother, who was this short little Italian mama who loved to prepared delicious little dishes for us to eat after school, I loved the name of this open-faced omelette and felt very grand telling my mother in my best Italian accent that we had ‘frittata for lunch’. I went to bed that night saying the word ‘frittata’ over and over until I thought that I sounded Italian. The Italian word ‘frittata’ derives from ‘friggere’ and it roughly means ‘fried’. I used to love watching Paula’s mother beat the eggs and cook them with mushrooms which she had simmering in golden butter, some Parmesan cheese and spring onions with a little bit of garlic, and then cook it all together over a slow heat and finishing it off in the oven under the grill. She said that one should always first cook ingredients like mushrooms or tomatoes and zucchini first, as they have a high water content and would make the frittata watery and unpleasant. I have never forgotten her advice. A frittata is a wonderful dish to serve to a crowd at breakfast and you can be made in a large ovenproof dish. What I like about a frittata is that you can clean the fridge out and put all the little bits and pieces into it and it always turns out beautifully. My friend Enzo makes the most delicious frittata using leftover spaghetti and lashings of Mascarpone cheese and Parmesan cheese – it tastes like heaven. I love to make one with petite pois, Mascarpone cheese, Parmesan and mushrooms. There are so many delicious combinations, it’s up to you and your tastebuds. Try one for dinner or lunch or even breakfast – they are delicious hot or cold and make a great addition to a picnic.
Baked Mushroom Leek Frittata by Jenny Morris
Serves 4 (starter portions) Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes

Let’s Cook! Ingredients
• 2 tsp Canola/olive oil • 1 medium leek, white and light green parts only, cut in half lengthwise and thinly sliced • 250g sliced mushrooms (a mix of white button & big brown) • 1 tbsp water • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme • ½ tsp salt • Freshly ground pepper, to taste • 6 large eggs • 1 cup evaporated skim milk • 1 cup (120g) shredded Parmesan cheese
Method
1. Preheat oven to 190 °C. Spray a 22cm pie dish with cooking spray and set aside. 2. Heat Canola/olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add leeks and sautée three minutes, until softened. Add mushrooms and sautée five to six minutes until softened and most of the water has evaporated. Add 1 tbsp water to deglaze the pan. 3. Stir in garlic, thyme, ¼ tsp salt and pepper, and cook for one minute until fragrant. Remove from heat. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, evaporated skim milk, remaining ¼ tsp salt and pepper to taste. 5. Sprinkle ¾ cup of cheese in bottom of pie dish and top with mushroom and leek mixture. Pour egg mixture on top and sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup cheese. 6. Bake frittata for 30 minutes until top is puffed and golden brown.

LAERSKOOL BRACKENFELL Carnival 2017 / Kermis 2017 Brackenfell Primary School will have its annual carnival on 20 and 21 October 2017. The morning and afternoon of the 20th are reserved for the learners and parents of the school. From 17:00, it is open to the members of the public. Everyone is invited to continue the festivities on the 21th, from 09:00 to 20:30. We have a variety of food stalls and arts & crafts stalls offering their various products and services to the public. Kids will be able to play to their hearts content as we offer various rides, with unlimited access to all the rides for R150. We hope to see the whole of Brackenfell at Brackenfell Primary School!

0/7 Netbalsukses Laerskool Welgemoed is baie trots op hulle 0/7A-netbalspannetjie wat hierdie jaar onoorwonne deur die netbalseisoen beweeg het. PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL Fun Run/Walk On Wednesday, 27 September the Pinelands North Primary School held its annual Fun Run/Walk at the Elsieskraal Canal. The Intermediate and Senior Phase children took part, with many of them picking up litter along the route. The event was a great success, with children running extra laps.
Welgemoed Primary was the proud hosts of the U/12 rugby day at DF Malan High School. It was a friendly day where the coaches were able to test their upcoming U/13 teams for 2018. The spirit shared by the teams was great and there was lots of support from parents. It was a day of fun and success.

Stamp Club exhibition Under the dedicated tutorship of philatelist David Sinclair, Pinelands North Primary was well represented at the Cape Town Royal Philatelic Society’s meeting of junior members held at the Athenaeum in Newlands on Monday, 25 September. David has built up a dedicated group of members and a total of 14 exhibits were displayed on the night.

Grade 4s have a blast at camp
Twice a year our pupils escape from the classroom to have a day of fun. They choose where they want to go. The activities vary from giraffe encounters to scrapbooking to soap making, and many more.
The Grade 4 of Sun Valley Primary School went on their first camp to Rocklands in Simon’s Town. They were divided into colour-coded teams and were allocated a Grade 7 prefect to assist them. The competition was high, and so was their level of excitement. Lasting friendships were formed and life lessons about leadership, collaborating with others and interdependence were learnt while having tons of fun.

U19 Rugby team being PROactive The Dragons U19 visited the Helderstroom Correctional Facility during the first weekend of the Spring vacation as part of their pre-season preparation. The players and coaches bonded while setting new goals for the upcoming rugby year. This was a great experience for all of us and a very inspiring weekend, which set the perfect platform for the months ahead. We are looking forward to an exciting and promising 2018 rugby season.

Art exhibition De Kuilen Primary school can really boast with their very creative artists. A few of our learners’ artwork were selected to be exhibited at an art exhibition held at the Western Cape Department of Education. The purpose of the art celebration is to promote learners’ creativity and ability to interpret their perception of their world (imaginative / inner world / physical, material world) in artwork. The artwork was judged in three categories: Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase and Senior Phase, where only 4 gold awards, 4 silver awards and 4 bronze awards were allocated per phase in our district. What made it so very special was the fact that our learners were all four Gregan Saayman (Grade 6) Logan Geysman awards winners. They were all receiving (Grade 1) Lindsay Abrahams (Grade 7) Mr an award in their category, whether it Andrew Gradwell (Art Teacher) and Morgan was silver or bronze. Petersen (Grade 7).

HOËRSKOOL DURBANVILLE Durbies gee om Ons Studenteraad het vanjaar verskeie projekte gedryf, onder andere een waar ons leerders gelde ingesamel het vir Rare Diseases South Africa. Ons Studenteraad het op Maandag, 23 Oktober ‘n tjek ter waarde van R30 000,00 aan die verteenwoordiger vir Rare Diseases, me. Retha de Wet, oorhandig. Baie dankie aan elke Durbie wat bygedra het.
Hoërskool Durbanville se atlete het op Saterdag, 21 Oktober aan die Top 10 Prestige Atletiekbyeenkoms op Bredasdorp deelgeneem. Die Durbies was sonder van hul dogtersatlete wat by WP Action Netbal betrokke was. Nietemin het Durbanville gesorg vir puik uitslae. Die Hoërskool Durbanville het algeheel 4de geëindig uit 84 spanne, een plek voor Grey Kollege van Bloemfontein. Ons is trots op ons atlete, wat vanjaar vroeër begin het met hul voorbereiding met die oog op volgende jaar se Interskole in die Groenpuntstadion.
DF Malan is die #VREESloos2017-wenners Tydens die afgelope skoolvakansie het die vier MTBS-skole aan Radio Tygerberg104 se #VREESloos2017 deelgeneem. Die konsep is ‘n mengsel van ‘Survivor’, ‘Big Brother’ en ‘Fear Factor’ waartydens tien deelneemers drie dae en twee nagte in ‘n Polo Vivo moes deurbring, met uitdagings of sogenaamde ‘vrese’ wat hulle moes oorkom om hul plek in die kar te verseker. Die kompetisie is in Tygervallei-sentrum gehou. DF se deelnemers was Rhyn Muller, Luke Keating, Justin Beck, Ulrich van Tonder, Corné Avenant, Ruben van Tonder, Dylan Turner, Jacques de Vos, Louhdy Preston, Harry Odendal, Matthew Maloney, Barry Vorster, Alexander Mouton en Luan Oosthuizen. Ons is baie trots om te kan sê dat DF die kompetisie gewen het. Ons seuns het ons so trots gemaak, hul ware karakter getoon en hulle lojaliteit teenoor die skool betoon. Hulle het gemotiveerd, positief en doelgerig opgetree. Verder het DF ook die geesbeker gewen en dit is te danke aan die talle ondersteuners, ouers en sosialemedia-ondersteuning. #VREESloos2017 het net weer eens bewys dat DF ‘n besonderse en toonaangewende skool is.

Durbies lewer wêreldkampioen Mieke Burger is onlangs gekroon as wêreldkampioen in diein Laser Run. Die Laser Run Wêreldkampioenskappe het onlangs in Kaapstad plaasgevind.
