Virtual sport series to showcase national school talent “The Showcase is a concept that was born during the Covid-19 pandemic and has grown to the first of its kind talent identification platform in South Africa”, says Gerhardi Odendaal, CEO of Old School Group, the host of The Showcase. “We designed this platform for athletes to improve their own ability at their own pace and to inspire kids that would not normally get the chance to showcase their talents to enter. Bobby Skinstad, Robbie Fleck and VanesMari Proudfoot have put their support behind this initiative and we are proud to combine their skills and knowledge, together with our industry specialists, within the programme”.

The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. Drills include the vertical jump, broad jump, sprinting, etc. and leaners submit the results of each test/showcase on the Showcase website and follow their results on a weekly leader board.

The AWSUM School News platform and The Showcase recently came together to give kids from all over the country and all walks of life, irrespective of their background or status of the school they attend, the opportunity to compete against each other. “Think about it, for the first time ever a learner from HTS Middelburg can compete against a learner from Hoërskool Namakwaland in Springbok, so it made perfect sense to join this initiative”, says Durandt van Zyl, CEO of AWSUM.

“So many times, we see talent that gets lost in the crowds at schools. Now kids can enter and compete individually, and we present the best performers for contracting by talent seekers”.

The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport.

“Children between the ages of 12 and 18 can showcase their athleticism and fitness as part of this unique programme and make their talents visible to top recruiters. This also builds self-confidence and enables youngsters to perform on a broader platform to measure their performance against other learners across the country”, van Zyl concluded.

The 3 phased series consist of: Phase 1: 10-week period where learners will complete sport specific conditioning drills Phase 2: The top performing entries from Phase 1 will participate at a live event against each other and have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of an audience of talent seekers, agents, varsity and high school recruiters, bursary givers, scouts and professional sports team coaches.

Phase 3: A 4-day camp will allow players to develop skills and get tips from the best in the sports industry.

Jade Dreyer top achievers in AdvTech Group of Schools ADvTECH Group, a leader in private education and resourcing honours the Class of 2020 with a prestigious award. The group honoured the cream of the top achievers within its school’s division. Dedicated teaching staff and the determination of pupils resulted in excellent results for the ADvTECH Schools Division. This includes matriculants in 28 high schools: Abbotts College, Crawford International Schools, Elkanah House School, Glenwood House College, Maragon Mooikloof, Pecanwood College, Pinnacle Colleges, Southdowns College, Trinityhouse and Tyger Valley College brands.

Among the students was Jade Dreyer from Abbotts College Claremont. Jade wrote the NSC final matric exams. She achieved 6 distinctions with an average of 88,3%. As the award winner, she received a crystal trophy and certificate as well as a R5000 cash prize sponsored by ADvTECH. “We applaud Jade’s hard work and commitment to achieving astounding results in the 2020 National Senior Certificate exams and wish her all the best in her future endeavours”, says Ivan Horn, Principal of Abbotts College Claremont. Jade is currently enrolled at Varsity College studying Project Management. She plans to study Psychology at the University of Cape Town once her Project Management course has been completed.

The SACS Dabchick sailors took part in the Western Cape championship this weekend. They dominated the event with Hamilton Slater winning, Bryan Carstens second and Thomas Slater 4th. Well done.

Congratulations to Kyle Kleinhans 1st in Freestyle Men U16 (25.77sec) at the SA Junior Nationals and Sirhaan Mia 1st in Butterfly Men U16.

Shaun Du Preez took part in the laser 4.7 Western Cape sailing championship in Hermanus this weekend finishing 5th overall.

This is a great achievement as he was competing in his first championship.

Congratulations to Jordi Swartz (Gr 12) on his phenomenal achievement in the 1500m Athletics Track Race. Jordi is an incredibly focussed athlete who competes weekly in different track and field meets. Jordi achieved his personal best time at Coetzenburg, 4:16 for 1500m. Thank you to Ms van Zyl (Head of Cross Country) for the many years of dedication and continued support of young athletes at Rondebosch Boys’ High School. Well done Jordi, we are very proud of you.

Gr 8 learner no.1 in tennis

Congratulations to Tai Pearson (Gr 8) who broke the South African Boys U13 Age Group Record for 100m Fly on 27th Feb 2021, as well as the 50m Fly Record the very next day.

Gareth Igesund joined RBHS this year as a Grade 8 learner and has excelled on the tennis court. He is ranked no. 1 in the U14 age group in South Africa. 1st XI Hockey vs Fish Hoek Club

On Saturday, 13 March 2021 an extraordinary moment happened during Wynberg Boys’ High School home fixtures against Bishops, where Juan James scored 123 for the 1st XI on the Jacques Kallis Oval, while his younger brother, Paul, went on to record 179 not out for the U14A on the Silverhurst B Field.

That both brothers were batting at the same time meant they were likely the last players to know of their double! Wynberg is fairly certain that this is a first for us in our 180 year history.

A small group of learners recently qualified for the SSA (Swimming South Africa) Level 3 Regional Championship. The Championship was held on 23 - 26 March 2021.

A group of our hockey enthusiasts was selected to participate in the Cape Town Premier Hockey League for 2021, to represent certain Cape Town franchise teams.

The Wynberg Girls’ High School representatives who were selected are:

Gemma Harris, Grade 8 Gemma attained personal best times in all the events that she swam and placed 1st in the girls 13yr old 50m breaststroke, 4th in the 100m breaststroke, and 4th in the 200m breaststroke.

Nurul-Huda Samaai, Grade 10 Nurul-Huda attained four personal best times. She also placed 2nd in the girls 15yr16yr old 100m Breaststroke, winning a silver medal; in addition, she placed 3rd in the girls 15yr-16yr old 200m Breaststroke, receiving a bronze medal.

Congratulations on being selected as a leader at your school. What are you looking forward to the most during your term as leader?

I am looking forward to engaging with the students at our school and really listening to them. I am really excited to create positive changes that will leave a long-lasting impact.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I am an extremely organised and efficient person. I love getting things done and I love people – but sometimes I can get stressed out very easily. I also love procrastinating!

What do you love the most about your school?

I love how my school is like a family – all the teachers make the learning environment so enjoyable. There is a sense of community and love within it. I always feel comfortable and it is like my second home.

Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for?

I am aiming for the marks I know I am capable of, but I am also aiming to have a balanced year with time to see my friends, be with my family, go outside and of course have some time to work.

What will you message of encouragement be for your prefects/ co-leaders?

Always be yourself, never try to be anyone else because it won’t make things any easier, and try not to judge – because you really never know what anyone’s going through.

Who is your role model?

My mom.

What are your plans after matric in 2022?

I will most probably be studying – I am not sure where and what as I am still looking at many options and possibilities.

If you could be any superhero, who do you want to be and why?

Wonder Woman – she embodies feminine strength and at the same time she is so authentic and kind.

Who is your Hollywood celeb crush?

From my early childhood – it will always be Zac Efron, from High School Musical.

To enact change within my school, where the student body feels as though they are living their best high school experience.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

One of my most utilised strengths is my ability to articulate myself, in a way which I’m understood by my peers. My biggest weakness would probably be putting expectations on myself to perform to unrealistic standards.

What do you love the most about your school?

The sense of community.

Who is your role model?

Bernie Sanders. The man’s consistent, no cap #FeelTheBurn.

What are your plans after matric in 2022?

Most likely study here in South Africa, but honestly anything could happen.

If you could be any superhero, who’d you want to be and why?

Deadpool if that counts? Having the selfawareness to know you’re a comic book character is a pretty powerful thing.

Natalie Portman.

Matric is your final year, from an academic point of view, what are you aiming for?

Honestly, just looking to try my best and push myself to the best of my ability.

The Kind Heart Bench Project We are very excited about The Kind Heart Bench Project that was launched.

The project’s emphasis is that we as a society can be that pillar, that backrest, the armrests, coming alongside our learners who are bullied, feeling depressed, marginalized, or who feel forgotten. The following students qualified for Level 3 and participated in the Swimming South Africa Championships in Oudshoorn: Connor van der Poll, Noah Petersen, Asia Kleinhans, Caitlin Scheepers and Joy van der Westhuizen.

Ethan Solomon qualified for the SSA Junior Championships.

Zahra Boltman competed in the Jnr Nationals in March 2021 and won bronze for Kata and silver for Kumite.

Zahra also competed in Boemfontein League 1 on the 9th to 11th April 2021 and scooped Double Gold in Kata and Kumite in the Junior female division and fighting (Kumite) in 59kgs.

Zahra is currently ranked No 1 in the Country for Kumite. Current she hopes to be selected for Ufak which the Juniors will be competing in Egypt sometime this year.

Camps Bay High School learner Cannons Creek’s cyclist perform at the SA Cycling excels at Fenn SA Surfski Championships Champs Camps Bay High School Grade 9 learner, Holly Smith from Hout Bay, punched way beyond her weight at the SA Surfski Championships held in Durban on 10 and 11 April 2021. Holly, who is just 14 years old, participated in both the S1 (singles) and S2 (doubles) events, competing in the U16 and U18 division.

Congratulations to Cannons Creek Grade 10 learners, Amber Hindmarch, who recently represented South Africa at the African Continental Cycling Championships.

Amber competed in the events held in Egypt from 10-13 March 2021.

She achieved the following: Two Gold medals (one for the Road team and one for the Track team time trial), and two Bronze medals (one for the Track scratch race, and one for the Track Madison race).

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

My greatest strength would be my creativity and my ability to bring people together despite their differences; my greatest weakness is that I tend to be impatient with myself.

Is there anything you would like to change at your school?

I would like to see more enthusiasm amongst the learners and more support for school events, to overall create a sense of “gees” in the school.

What do you love the most about your school?

I love our diversity and willingness to adapt. I see Edgemead as a place where anyone is welcome, a school that allows you to grow as a person and a student.

Grade 9 subject choices: why you should start considering them now In a few months’ time, Grade Nine learners will be required to make important decisions about which combination of subjects they will be pursuing through to their final Matric exams. This is an important first milestone on the road to building a career, an education expert says, adding that while the decision would normally be left until later in the year, the world has changed so dramatically that Grade Nines should start thinking about this significant decision sooner rather than later.

“The world changed last year – not just because schooling and work were disrupted and not just because both had to happen from home in ways never imagined before. The world changed because we are unlikely to go back to what we experienced in 2019,” says Natasha Madhav, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider.

“It has long been said that one needs to prepare young people for jobs that do not exist, but this has never been a concept that has been crystallised in a way that really helped one make decisions. Perhaps it is clearer now to focus on preparing for a world of work that is changed and focusing on industries and skill sets that are and will be in demand, rather than on jobs with names that are familiar to us.

“So, for instance, law has not vanished as a field, but most lawyers now need to consult online as easily as they do in person and they can collaborate in real time with colleagues all over the place. They also need to be advising people on both physical and digital implications of what they do.”

“The basic instruction is the same – develop an understanding of fields you are interested in and the things you are good at. Then look for jobs and careers that seem future-focused. Then, look for institutions that not only offer future-oriented curricula, but whose teaching and learning and assessment are explicitly directed at a changing world”.

This then links to smart subject choices, Madhav says.

“If your field is likely to be scientific and technical and analytical, you are still well served to include maths and science and perhaps a technology subject. If your field is problem-solving and solution-oriented, then subjects like history and design or visual arts will provide that skill set. If you are looking for both, you will need both. Higher education institutions are not going to move away from some of the standard demands for particular high-demand disciplines or fields, so be sure that you understand what you need for admission and include these in your choices.

One of the key issues to consider is the fact that automation is on the rise, and that technological adoption by companies will transform jobs and indemand skills in future. And, as noted by the WEF in their most recent Future of Jobs report, skills gaps will continue to be high as in-demand skills across jobs change in the next five years.

As noted in the report: “The top skills and skill groups which employers see as rising in prominence in the lead up to 2025 include groups such as critical thinking and analysis as well as problem-solving, and skills in self-management such as active learning,

So where to start researching which careers will exist when you matriculate, and which of them might interest you?

“A good place to start, on top of doing online research, is to find a higher education institution that has already demonstrated that they produce technically proficient and in-demand graduates, whose skills are aligned with what is required in the workplace because of their close industry connections. In other words, an institution whose curricula are up-to-date at all times, and that is able to quickly and resiliently respond to our fastchanging world. You will know who they are as they will confidently speak about change and flexibility and adaptability and about the link between study and work,” says Madhav.

“By speaking to a student advisor at such an institution, which crucially must also be able to demonstrate that meaningful learning continued during lockdown, learners will be able to discuss their current interests and strengths, and then get advice and insight into which fields will be in high demand in future, and which subjects they can choose later this year, which will give them access to these fields.”

New principal for Camps Bay High School Said Mostert, “I started out my teaching career at Camps Bay High School some 33 years ago and I have been a proud member of the Camps Bay School Community for all those years. For over 10 years, I was the school’s Deputy Principal and Head of Academics and Mathematics and I am looking forward to taking up the role as Principal and taking forward the school’s vision ‘Strength in Diversity’ to ensure there is always an environment of tolerance and respect on the Camps Bay High School Campus.”

Rustenburg Girl’s High turns 127 The past few months in the world have seen many firsts; at Rustenburg Girls’ High School too. In 2021 the school will be celebrating its 127th birthday digitally.

A live assembly will be broadcast to many venues throughout the school, followed by some sweet treats as party gifts to the learners. The assembly will also be shared with the Rustenburg alumnae.

Previously many past pupils were able

to attend the event in the school’s Kemp Hall, with the 125th anniversary in 2019 welcoming the greatest number of guests to the campus to date. It is hoped that, despite safety protocols and social distancing regulations, this new format will allow even more members of the school community to enjoy the special event.

The selection committee involved in the Principal’s Appointment, conducted a rigorous selection process which involved many hours of work sifting through the applicants and ensuring that the required Western Cape Department of Education protocols were adhered to.
