This October, CANSA highlights the importance of screening and early detection for breast cancer as part of its Women’s Health Campaign. Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 35 in South Africa, according to the 2007 National Cancer Registry. “We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Know how your breasts look and feel – discuss any changes you observe with your health practitioner. It’s also very important to go for a mammogram every year from the age of 40,” states Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO. She adds, “Women need to be aware of the screening opportunities available. We have mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa”. Reduce risk through regular examinations Many breast lumps are harmless, but they should all be checked. It is important for women to do monthly breast self-examinations and to go for regular clinical breast examinations. Symptom-free women of 40 and

older should go for a mammogram (a special X-ray to detect lumps in the breast), every year. Prevention and early detection The most effective weapon against cancer is knowledge. If you consider that one in four individuals may be affected by the disease during their lifetime, you will realise how powerful knowledge is in terms of risk reduction, prevention and early detection. CANSA’s prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns contain material re a balanced diet and promote a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, not smoking, staying safe in the sun, doing regular self-examinations and undergoing regular medical checkups. All prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns are underpinned by research. Other cancers affecting women: • Fallopian tube cancer • Ovarian cancer • Vaginal cancer • Vaginal clear-cell adenosarcoma • Vulvar cancer • Uterine cancer How women can reduce their cancer risk: Be aware of the importance of the early detection of cancer. This enables more effective treatment and a better chance of recovery.

Acknowledge the importance of a healthy balanced lifestyle: not smoking, being sun smart, going for preventative screenings and avoiding known cancer-causing factors. We also encourage women to reduce their risk of female cancers by: • Avoiding hormone therapy • Using condoms to help prevent sexually transmitted infections such as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is a high risk factor for cervical cancer • Consulting a healthcare professional on the HPV vaccine • Consulting a healthcare professional for advice on appropriate screening tests if there is a family history of cancer Mobile health clinics CANSA has nine mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa in October to reach women and men who would otherwise not have access to screening. They offer the following: • Clinical breast examinations • Pap smear screening tests for cervical cancer • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for men to detect prostate abnormalities • Cholesterol test • Blood pressure test

The aging process takes enough of a toll on the human body without having the mind share the same fate. As we age, the brain is susceptible to various degenerative processes, from simple lapses in memory and concentration to outright cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s. Fortunately, there are simple ways to keep your brain healthy into your golden years. Here are three brain boosters to keep you on your mental toes:

Feed It: Your brain needs sound nutrition to function optimally. The outer membrane of brain cells requires a constant supply of fatty acids. That’s where omega-3s can help (Omega 3-6-9). Choline, a B vitamin present in high amounts in eggs, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, wheat germ and tofu, may also be important for brain neurotransmitter function while benefiting mood and mental performance. Lamb shank with bacon, smoked chilli and apple.

YOU’LL NEED:

This lamb shank recipe has a deep, smoky flavour with a hint of chilli. To sample the best that shanks have to offer it’s vital that they be cooked for a minimum of 21⁄2 hours. Shanks can’t be rushed. • • • • • • •

375 ml (11⁄2 C) apple juice 2 large dried chillies 250 ml (1 C) seedless raisins 60 ml (¼ C) olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 4–6 large lamb shanks 2 large red onions, sliced

WHAT TO DO:

• Combine the apple juice, chillies and raisins in a small bowl and leave to soak for 3 hours. Blend or liquidise the mixture until smooth. It does not matter if the raisins are not completely blended as they will add texture to the dish. Set aside. • Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Season the lamb well and brown the shanks,

6–8 large cloves garlic, crushed 250 g chopped rindless bacon 15 ml sweet smoked paprika 3 bay leaves 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 25 ml (11⁄2 Tbsp) chopped fresh parsley

one at a time, until golden brown. Remove from the saucepan and set aside. • Sauté the onions, garlic and bacon in the same saucepan until soft. • Add the paprika, bay leaves, rosemary, parsley, tomatoes with juice, tomato paste, sugar and peppercorns. Stir in the raisin mixture and cook for 5 minutes,

1 x 400 g can whole peeled tomatoes with juice 1 x 70 g can tomato paste 5 ml (1 tsp) sugar 5 whole black peppercorns 750 ml (3 C) Pinotage 30 ml (2 Tbsp) red wine vinegar

stirring continuously. • Preheat the oven to 170 °C. • Transfer the lamb to a large ovenproof casserole dish, big enough to hold all the shanks. Add the red wine and sauce and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Alternatively, use a deep roasting pan and cover the meat with a layer of baking paper, followed by two layers of foil

secured tightly around the edge. • Cook for 21⁄2–3 hours or until the meat comes away from the bone. Check on the liquid halfway through the cooking time. Add a little more apple juice to the cooking liquid if too much has evaporated during the prolonged cooking. Make sure the casserole is tightly covered again before returning the dish to the oven. • Once the shanks are tender, remove the casserole from the oven, remove the shanks from the sauce and set aside to keep warm. • Reduce the sauce by bringing the remaining liquid to the boil. • Cook rapidly until the sauce is thick and has reduced by half. • Adjust seasoning and stir in the red wine vinegar. Transfer the lamb to a serving platter and spoon the sauce over the top. • Garnish with chopped herbs and serve with mashed potato.

I am always looking for the perfect cloth napkins to use for when we have guests over for dinner. The problem I have is I can either never find any I like, or if I do like them, they’re stained and dull after many MANY washes. That’s why I decided to revamp my old napkins to make them look exactly how I wanted. I went with a gray color to be more of an accent than a focal point on my table, and I have to tell you, this is a DIY I am loving the outcome of! Here is how you can make your own …

DIY Dip-Dyed Napkins

La Rochelle Primary OCTOBER 2014 7 Book Week

School Library Month was celebrated during September. The teachers in the foundation phase each decorated the class room door with illustrations from a book. The grade 7 learners participated by reading stories to the little Larries.

CAMI Speed Challenge

In die rekenaarklas gebruik ons CAMIwiskunde program om leerders se Wiskunde te oefen. Hulle doen ook die spoedtoetsoefening waar die 4 bewerkings getoets word. Elke leerder kompeteer met haarself om haar uitslae te verbeter. By Laer Meisieskool La Rochelle het ons intern uitdunne gehou en die beste leerder per graad is dan deur na die finale rondte van die CAMI Speed Challenge wat deur CAMI op 18 Oktober by N1 Stad Winkelsentrum aangebied is. Dit was ‘n goeie geleentheid om hulle vaardighede te toets teen leerders van ander skole. Ons leerders het goed gevaar en volgende jaar hoop ons om nog beter te vaar.

Graad 7-leerders kan elke jaar inskryf vir die Tweetaligheidskompetisie wat intern gehou word. Eksaminators word van buite gekry om toesig te hou oor die proses. Die wenner sal ‘n beker ontvang aan die einde van die jaar.

Op Dinsdag, 21 Oktober het ons skool se Junior en Senior koor deelgeneem aan ‘n Koorfees in die Stellenbosch Stadsaal. Dit is aangebied deur Henri Scott, wat self ook ‘n sanger van formaat is. Beide kore het ‘n liedjie gesing en was daarna deel van ‘n massakoor saam met die gewilde sangeres,

Elizma Theron. Hulle het saam met die kore van Laerskool Stellenbosch en Laerskool Eikestad, drie liedjies saam met haar gesing. Dit was ‘n wonderlike geleentheid vir die koorlede en hulle was baie in hul noppies om saam met so ‘n bekende sangeres op die verhoog te verskyn.

Golfdag

Laerskool WA Joubert het op Vrydag, 26 September 2014 ons derde gholfdag by Boschenmeer aangebied. Ons wil graag alle borge, donateurs en deelnemers bedank vir hul betrokkenheid by ons skool. Die golfdag gaan van krag tot krag en was weereens hierdie jaar ‘n reuse sukses. Op die foto’s verskyn, skoolhoof Louis Mouton saam met van die borge en spanne wat deelgeneem het.

Ons Top-onderwyser-toekenning vir die derde kwartaal het aan juf Lowina du Plessis (gr 3) gegaan. Haar positiewe gesindheid, respekvolle optrede teenoor almal en hulpvaardigheid is eienskappe wat raakgesien en waardeer word.

OOV Speletjiesaand en pajamas ingesamel vir die inwoners van Rusthof tehuis. Elke liewe inwoner van die 104 inwoners wat daar is, het n pakkie ontvang. Dit was ‘n belewenis en ons besef net weereens hoe dankbaar ons kan wees!

Hugo Rust Laerskool 10 OCTOBER 2014 Graad 6 Leierskapkamp

Die graad 6-leerders het aan die begin van die nuwe kwartaal hul Leierskamp en spanbou by die VCSV-Bainskloofkampterrein gehad. Dit was groot pret! Ons het geleer van die bewaring van ons pragtige natuurerfenis. Ons het in digte mis oor die nok van die berg geklim. Die middag het ons in die Witterivier (een

van die vyf skoonste riviere ter wêreld) na ‘n bedreigde visspesie gesoek. Later het ons blaljaar in die rotspoele. Ons het die geleentheid gehad om ‘n skaars slangsoort van nader te bekyk en selfs te hanteer. Na lekker spanaktiwiteite en speletjies het ons gegroet en weer besef dat ons in die mooiste dorp in die Boland woon.

Graad 5 Kirstenboschuitstappie Dinsdag, 21 Oktober, het die graad 5’s met ‘n groot gejuig Kirstenbosch besoek. ‘n Wolklose Rondebosch het ons gegroet en die kinders kon mooi die verskil tussen die stad se lugbesoedeling en die skoon blou lug aan die berg se kant ervaar. Daar is fynbos uitgeken, verskillende plantegroeistreke is herken en so ook is hulle blootgestel aan die wêreld van die blinde. Daar is toe oë geloop waar hulle

die klanke in die bos moes identifiseer. Groot was die opgewondenheid om op die bewegende “Snake Walk” te stap, ‘n paar bleek gesiggies met versteekte glimlagte het aan die anderkant weer met die vaste grond kennis gemaak. Piekniek is onder die koeltebome gehou saam met die mak eendjies, voor die 70 moeë kinders weer die pad terug Wellington toe aangepak het.

Hugo Rust staan agter die WP!! Malta - ervaring Malta was ‘n wonderlike ervaring! Ek het die kompetisie baie geniet. Ek het baie geleer by die oefenkamp en ek het vriende gemaak met meisies van ander lande. Malta is ‘n baie ou en interessante land, dit is warm en al reën dit, is alles vaal. Daar is baie min bome en plante. Die mense is baie vriendelike, maar ek, ek mis almal en die skool.

Hugenote Laerskool Amateur Boks Kampioenskappe

Marnus Ehlers het vanaf 6-11 Oktober in Welkom aan die Suid-Afrikaanse CSA kadet amateur boks kampioenskappe deelgeneem. Hy het in sy gewigsafdeling ‘n bronsmedalje gewen en is tans 3de in Suid-Afrika geplaas.

Op 7 Oktober het Carl van der Westhuizen aan die SA Kampioenskappe vir Trampolien by die Velodrome in Belville deelgeneem. Carl het silver medalje in die Blacktop en ‘n goue medalje vir die mini-trampolien ontvang.

’N GIM-LEGENDE VERLAAT DIE PAARL … Dis tyd vir ’n nuwe fase in sy lewe, ’n nuwe uitdaging. Na 18 jaar as skoolhoof van Laerskool Paarl Gimnasium verruil Cassie Carstens en sy vrou Karina die Paarl vir Nigerië. Vir die volgende 6 jaar gaan Cassie en Karina betrokke wees by ’n privaatskool in Abuja, in die suide van Nigerië. Die Hoërskool wat hulle oopmaak, val onder die vaandel van Chrisland Schools wat die tweede grootste privaatskool-organisasie in Afrika is. Dit is die einde van ’n era vir Gim, maar ’n verlenging van sy passie en liefde vir die onderwys. Aftree kon hy, maar nee. Daar is nog te veel om te doen en te bereik. Soos hý dit stel: “Ek is mal oor my job” en daar is nog soveel om te leer. So hoe het die pad vir Cassie tot hier geloop? Cassie is gebore in Marienthal Namibië. Op 5-jarige ouderdom verhuis sy ouers Paarl toe en dit is hier waar sy liefde vir Gim begin met sy eie kinders die vierde geslag deur Gim. Op hoërskool speel hy onder andere ook 0/19 A-rugby vir Gim. Na skool gaan swot hy onderwys vir 4 jaar op OKP, en dien ook as Voorsitter van die Studenteraad. Hy sit sy studies voort aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch met BA en B.Ed grade. In 1980 begin hy as LO-onderwyser by Laerskool Mikro en bied Tale, Aardrykskunde en Natuurwetenskap as vakke aan. Hy skuif in 1988 as departementshoof na Laerskool SomersetWes. In 1991 word hy as Adjunkhoof by Laerskool Welgemoed aangestel, waar hy einde 1993 klaarmaak as waarnemende hoof. Paarl Girls’ High School 12 OCTOBER 2014 Top 10 Bredasdorp Medaljewenners

Die volgende atlete het by die Top 10 byeenkoms in Bredasdorp medaljes verower en het in die tweede plek geëindig in die afdeling vir skole kleiner as 600 leerders.

Netbal

Nicky en Kara Viljoen het as deel van die Suid-Afrikaanse 0.17 Netbalspan vanaf 12-21 Oktober Suid- Afrika verteenwoordig in Portugal. Die span het die Browns Sports and Leisure Club Toernooi gewen. Dit was ‘n asemrowende ervaring wat die dames nog lank sal onthou. Baie geluk – ons is trots op julle.

Prizegiving Ceremony

We were so inspired by the speech given by Mrs Kubeshini Govender, the guest speaker at the annual Prizegiving Ceremony. Mrs Govender is the Deputy Chief Education Specialist at the Western Cape Education Department as well as a IMG Manager. Here she is with our new Head Girl for 2015, Carli van Wyk.

Ons is baie opgewonde oor die nuwe ingang van die Hoër Meisieskool Paarl!

Hoërskool Paarl Gimnasium Eerste Krieketspan

Die eerste krieketspan het ‘n baie suksesvolle toer na die Oos-Kaap onderneem. Wedstryde is teen ‘n Warriors Ontwikkelingspan (Port Elizabeth), Kingswood College en St Andrews College (Grahamstad) en Glenwood House (George) gespeel. Al 4 wedstryde is oortuigend deur Gim gewen (onderskeidelik met 71 lopies, 55 lopies, 7 paaltjies en 108 lopies). Al die oorwinnings was belangrik, maar die wen teen Kingswood College was beslis ‘n hoogtepunt! Kingswood College was die Oos-Kaap verteenwoordigers by die 20/20-nasionale skolekampioenskappe en het vierde in die land geëindig. Ons sien uit na ‘n opwindende seisoen.

Breaking news: SA’s Top Young Mathematicians Christoff van Zyl het die gesamentlike 5de plek behaal in die ‘South African Mathematics Olympiad’. ‘n Ongelooflike prestasie!!

Ruan Raath en Nitzké Le Roux is passievol oor dans. Hier is hulle by die Boland Showmix Dans kompetisie wat op 18 Oktober plaasgevind het. Saam het hul 9 eerste plekke behaal & Nitzke altesaam 17 eerste plekke vir “Ballroom” & “Latin American” danse.

Matriekafskeid

Hierdie jaar se Matriekafskeid is gehou by Kronenburg, net buite die Paarl en dit was omtrent ‘n spoggeleentheid. Almal het die aand baie geniet. Die skoner geslag se hare, rokke en grimering was asemrowend en die manne het self ook baie spoggerig gelyk. Juffrou De Kock het alle verwagtinge oortref met die skitterende tema en dékor.

Paarl Boys’ High School OCTOBER 2014 13 Gr 10 Besigheidstudies besoek aan Henties

Ice-bucket challenge

Die Gr 10 Besogheidstudies groep het Henties Juices Cape CC gaan besoek wat reeds sedert 1998 in bedryf is.

Die skoolhoof van HJS, mnr. Derek Swart, is onlangs deur twee kollegas, mnre. Deon Scheepers van Grey Kollege in Bloemfontein en Daan Potgieter van Waterkloof in Pretoria, uitgedaag om die Ice-bucket challenge te doen. Soos almal weet, laat mnr. Swart hom nie sommer uitdaag nie. Hy het die uitdaging aanvaar en sommer tegelyk Braaidag gevier deurdat HJS wors (goedgunstiglik geskenk deur die Slagerij van der Kooi) gebraai het waarvan die opbrengs weer aan Die Burger-Kersfonds oorbetaal is. Die hele senior bestuurspan van HJS

het hulself vierkantig agter hul hoof geskaar en besluit om dit ook te doen. Om ons onverskrokkenheid verder te demonstreer, het ons een van die koudste dae van die jaar hiervoor gekies! HJS het sodoende ook ‘n groot finansiële bydrae tot die spierdistrofie-vereniging gemaak. Ons gedagtes gaan uit na mnr. Tinus Linee, vroeër ‘n professionele rugby-afrigter in diens van HJS, wat swaar getref is deur die siekte. HJS daag die senior bestuur van al hul buurskole in die Paarl uit om dieselfde te doen!

This week has seen the third running of the Boys’ High Premier League. Eight sponsored teams playing in two pools played three games each before the semi-final stage. The final is scheduled for Friday October 31st at 13:00 on the school field in Auret Street. The semifinalists are A&S (Cupboards) Strikers, Gary Kirsten Foundation XI, Glacier Giants and Stofberg & Griessel. The tournament started as always with a gala dinner attended by the 120 players from all age groups and 140 guests. Our guest speaker was Mr Gary Kirsten who entertained those present with his insight on the modern professional game and the importance of mass participation at school level. The

four teams who were knocked out were PWC Scorchers, Bok-Pulse Bashers, Willow Creek Warriors and Feedem First XI. Money raised from the event goes towards the funding of the Indoor Cricket Centre of Excellence at the Brug Street sports field.

Die Koor van die Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle het ‘n skitterende 91% in hul Intermediêre UNISA-Kooreksamen vir Gelyke Stemme behaal.

By die Akademiese Prysuitdeling van die Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle is die Top Presteerders van 2014 vereer.

Labori Höerskool 14 OCTOBER 2014 Gemeenskapsprojek

Die VRL het onlangs as deel van ‘n gemeenskapsprojek die leerders van Bosplaas Primêr op ‘n uitstappie na Nuweland gevat. Hulle het self borge ingesamel vir kospakkies, busvervoer, verversings ens. Dit was hierdie leerders se eerste besoek aan Nuweland en was vir die meeste van hulle ‘n droom.

Prysuitdeling

Tweeling Vion en Vincentia Johnson was ons hokkiespelers van die jaar (Seuns en dogters). Albei het hulle Boland kleure vir hokkie verwerf in 0/18.

All Stars Africa

John de Wee, Hoofseun van 2014, is beloon met die Omniatoekening asook die beker vir uitstaande leierskap. Die Omnia-toekening gaan aan die matriek seun wat die grootste bydrae tot Labori se sport oor die afgelope vyf jaar gemaak het. John is vir die derde jaar aangewys as Victor Ludorm en was ook vanjaar die 0/19A-Rugbyspan se kaptein. Hy het ook vir die 0/19A-Krieketspan gespeel

Op die foto is Gerdus saam met Wilhelm Greef Gerdus met al sy toekennings: Beste die President van NASP SA, sy Pa Ian Visser Algehele skut van die en Charl Rabie WP Koordineerder en hy was Kampionskappe - Goud/Houd plaat ook die NASP SA span Bestuurder.

Marianka van der Westhuizen het die hoogste prestasie in RTT en Besigheidstudies behaal en was ook so ons top Handelsstudent.

Herman Gryffenberg is ons akademiese top graad 12 leerder vir 2014. Hy is ook aangewys as matriek van die jaar en het die trofee ontvang vir die top Ingenieurstudies student. Herman was vanjaar hoofseun by Huis Jan van Zyl, kaptein van diie 0/19A-Seunshokkiespan en het ook vir die eerste tennisspan gespeel.

Noorder Paarl High School Basketball

Lwando Malanga took part in the Boland basketball Tournament in the September holidays. He was one of the all star players selected at the tournament.

Anro Arendse, kranige rugbysp eler van die onder 19 B-span ,het vanjaar die Global Spotlight Talent Search gewen en is hier saam met die Organiseerders, Sydwell Beziek en Adri Francke asook die bekende Idols -finalis (2011) Casandra Forbes en die akteur Ifrahim Gordon van Kyknet. Hy het nie net ‘n goue sangstem nie; hy het ook goue vingers wat vir niks verkeerd staan nie. Gee hom net ‘n Saxofoon, klavier, krieketkolf of kitaar. En hy maak magic daarmee.

Die top 3 van die graad 12 klas maak staat op die Garden of Eden om kalmte te verseker voor een van die Terrible Twins (Wiskunde en Natskei, natuurlik) geskryf word.

As jy die kortverhaal Benedicta in Storiejoernaal gelees het en ooit gewonder het hoekom Chrisjan in ‘n dam met twee krokodille gespring het, moet jy sy broer Johan Bakkes vra.Dis presies wat die NOSSIE-span gedoen het. Professor Johan Bakkes het ons aangenaam verras met sy staaltjies uit sy reisboeke wat almal lekker gekruide taal bevat. Raai net watter een is Johan.

Ons het ‘n heerlike oggend met ‘n paar van ons eie ruiters gehad op ons rugbyveld. Die skool het definitief nuwe respek vir hierdie sportsoort gekry.
