Crazy about calamari

Calamari makes my mouth very happy. My first introduction to this delicacy occurred in the home of a childhood friend whose Greek parents prepared it for us. I’m glad I never got to see it in its raw state then, as all the ink might have put young me off and I would never have known how great calamari could be.

SUMMER SQUID Serves 4-5 • 500g Breco Squid Tubes sliced into paper-thin tubes • Flour for dusting • Salt to taste • Cayenne pepper (optional) • Oil for frying Season the flour with a little salt and cayenne pepper, and dust the calamari tubes with the flour. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the calamari in small batches until

just-cooked. Stir the calamari into the salad ingredients (see below).

Serving suggestion Why not make a summer squid salad?

For this, you will need: • ½ cup very thinly sliced fennel bulb • 2 tbsp. finely chopped fennel fronds (leaves) • 2 tsp. lemon zest • 1 tbsp. chopped dill

• 3 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley • 1 red pepper, diced • 1 red chilli, finely chopped • 2 long ribs of celery, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp. chopped capers • 2 cloves crushed garlic • ½ cup lemon juice • ¾ cup olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste Mix all the ingredients together and add the

calamari. Let the salad rest for 30 minutes before serving.

Ons het hierdie jaar die gaping tussen HMS Paarl en die ander twee meisieskole met meer as ‘n 115 punte verklein. Ons is baie trots op ons swemmers wat hul doelwitte bereik het.

Congratulations to these Girls’ High learners who were inaugurated as Junior Town Council members on Tuesday, 25 February 2015.

Drie van ons Gr 9 leerders het HMS op Saterdag, 21 Februarie, by die Xterra driekamp-byeenkoms in Grabouw verteenwoordig. Van die 933 deelnemers, het hierdie span 291ste gekom en dus ‘n algehele derde plek behaal van al die meisiespanne wat deelgeneem het.

Robyn McMillan het begin met 400m swem. Daarna het Mia de Villiers die 12km Bergfietsroete voltooi waarna Elma Verhoef die finale 6km bergroete gedraf het. Hierdie dogters het almal medaljes vir hul prestasie verower. Ons is baie trots op hulle!

019A TENNIS WEN TEEN GIMNASIUM

Op Dinsdag, 3 Maart, het die jaarlikse dogters interskole tennis tussen Hoërskool Gimnasium en Hoër Meisieskool Paarl plaasgevind. Gimnasium was die laaste paar jaar die wenners van die interskole tennis, maar vanjaar is die bordjies verhang. After the ceremony that took place at 15:00, the girls went on court for their singles matches. Three of the six matches went to three sets and after the singles the schools were tied

with 3 matches each. Everything came down to the doubles matches. HMS se dubbelskombinasies het die deurslag gegee. Goed afgeronde netspel en ‘n positiewe gesindheid op die baan het aan HMS se spelers die voordeel gebied. HMS het al drie dubbelswedstryde oortuigend gewen en met ‘n finale telling van 6-3 as wenners van 2015 se interskole tennis uit die stryd getree. Baie geluk aan hierdie span, wat HMS se naam hoog gehou het.

New Orleans se -krieketspanne het onlangs hul krieket derby teen KN gewen. New Orleans het eerste gekolf en 48 lopies aangeteken. KN kon slegs 38 lopies aanteken. Die kaptein, Vernito Mehl het 4 paaltjies vir 21 lopies geneem.

Hoekom staan die manne by die karre. Wel, Ethan Williams het onlangs die derde vinnigste seun onder 17 in die Boland in die 400m geword, terwyl Curtley Davids ook ‘n derde plek gekry het in die 200 en 100m vir seuns onder 15. Hulle wou kyk of hulle vinniger as sekere onnies se karre kon hardloop. Kyle wat derde gekom het in die seuns driesprong onder 17 het maar net sy skamerige glimlaggie gegee. Al drie seuns is dit eens dat gereelde oefening baie belangrik is.

Samsung Galaxy S6

Every release in the Samsung S series has been highly anticipated, and it’s been no different in the run-up to the release of the Galaxy S6. In fact, the S6 may be more deserving of attention than any of its predecessors, as the phone is sure to shake up our expectations of the Galaxy S series.

From a flexible display and metal casing to an octa-core processor, rumours and speculation have been flying around the internet. Some rumours are, of course, more likely to prove true than others, but everything seems to be pointing to big upgrades and a smartphone deserving of the hype.

Here are some things to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S6 in terms of design, features, price, release date and specifications: GET READY FOR AN UPDATED DESIGN. Expect the S6 to have a more durable case, possibly made of aluminium or grapheme.

Smartphones – and their screens – have been getting bigger. This is one trend that doesn’t look to be at an end, so expect the S6 to feature a 5.1’’

screen.

The biggest upgrades will probably be seen in the processor and camera, and the phone’s display and durability.

Consumers want their phone batteries to last longer, and as Samsung have done well in this regard, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to keep improving.

EXPECTED PRICE Samsung smartphones have always been at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and we don’t expect this one to be any different. In fact, the S6 is likely to be a little more expensive than previous phones in the S series. You’ll probably be looking at approximately R8 925.

EXPECTED RELEASE DATE The S6’s official release date is not expected to be announced until the MWC 2015 at the beginning of March. As the S5’s release date was in April 2014, it seems likely that the next in the series will have a release date in April this year.

Die eerste krieketspan van Boland Landbou het ‘n skitterende seisoen beleef.

Die span het 25 wedstryde gespeel en 20 gewen. Uitstekende oorwinnings is behaal teen Wynberg, SACS, Paarl Gimnasium, HJS Paarl en Paul Roos. Die span het in die finaal van die Boland 20/20 kompetisie gespeel maar ongelukkig teen HJS Paarl verloor. Boland Landbou het ook vanjaar vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar vir Oakdale in hulle jaarlikse Interskole kragmeting gemaklik met 163 lopies geklop. Die span is uitstekend aangevoer deur Luke Philander wat vir die Boland o.18 Coca Cola-span gespeel het asook vir die

Cobras o.18-span. Uitblinkers in die span was die kolwers Philander met 713 lopies, Slabber la Grange met 696 lopies en Louis Frylinck met 688 lopies. Die boulers wat die meeste paaltjies ingeoes het, was die draaier Jandré Prinsloo met 37 paaltjies gevolg deur die swaaibouler Louis Frylinck met 35 paaltjies. Die openingsboulers JT Potgieter en Danrich Visagie het ook uitstekend geboul.

Ons O.19A-tennisspan het deelgeneem Tjaart Vorster tennistoernooi by Marlow Landbouskool op Cradock. Die uitslae is soos volg: • Boland Landbou vs HTS Daniel Pienaar (Uitenhage) wen 27-0 • Boland Landbou vs Hoërskool Stellenbosch wen 21-6 • Boland Landbou vs Hoërskool Voortrekker (Bethlehem) wen 23-4 • Boland Landbou vs Hoërskool Cradock wen 22-5 In die finaal speel ons teen Hoërskool Outeniqua van George. Na 6 enkelspelwedstryde was die telling 3 elk. Daarna wen Outeniqua twee van die 3 dubbelspelwedstryde en ons verloor die kragmeting 5-4. Ons eindig dus tweede met Oakdale derde en Hoërskool Stellenbosch 4de.

Die 4M-Atletiekbyeenkoms van 2015 is deur die verdedigende kampioene, die Hoër Meisieskool La Rohelle met ‘n puntetotaal van 446 gewen. Naaswenners was die Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof (413), gevolg deur die Hoër Meisieskool Paarl (248) en Rhenish Girls’ High School (134). Die Larries

het ook 3 van die 4 trofeë vir Beste Atleet per Ouderdomsgroep ingepalm: Tatum Maher (D/14, 400m, 1:00:25, 888); Jani Redelinghuys (D/15, Diskus 38.68, 853); Angeline Smit (D/17, Gewigstoot, 14.63, 923). Nienka du Toit (Bloemhof) was die beste o/19-atleet met haar afstand van 11.65

in D/19 Gewigstoot – 897 punte. La Rochelle het ook die o/15 en o/19-Ouderdomsgroepe gewen met Bloemhof die o/14’s en o/17’s.

Die feit dat slegs 3 rekords(almal deur La Rochelle) tydens die byeenkoms verbreek is, dui op die uitstaande gehalte van die atletiek wat by Dal Josafat Stadion in die

Paarl gelewer is. Angeline Smit (D/17) het haar eie Gewigstootrekord van 13.43 na 14.63 verbeter, asook haar Diskus-afstand van 38.60 na 39.39, terwyl die 400mH Junior Olimpiese Kampioen, Gézelle Magerman (D/19), die 400m rekord van 57.69 na 57.12 verbeter het.

On Friday 6 March, Girls’ High learners participated in the annual “Day without Shoes” Project, where we took off our shoes and gave it away to those in need.

BOLAND ATHLETICS

Congratulations to Anneken Viljoen (right), who was selected for the Boland Athletics team. She participated at the Western Cape Athletics Championships on Saturday, 7 March. She took part in the 800m and 1500m.

TWEEKAMP

Baie geluk aan Aninka Ferreira (dogters o/11) en Anli Loubser (Dogters 0/15) wat gekies is om vanaf 3-1 April Boland Tweekamp in hul ouderdomsgroep by die SA Kampioenskappe wat te verteenwoordig. Die kampioenskappe word in Stellenbosch gehou. Ons is baie trots op hulle!

Helen Prinsloo (dogters o/9) het ‘n 1 ste plek behaal by die Boland Kampioenskappe wat gehou is op Saterdag, 28 Februarie 2015. Hier is sy met haar Goue medalje.

MULTIFUNKSIONELE ATLETIEKBYEENKOMS

Op Woensdag 25 Februarie het Hoër Meisieskool Paarl hul eerste Laerskool Atletiekbyeenkoms op die Astro veld aangebied. Die volgende skole het deelgeneem: Hoër Meisieskool Paarl, Klein Boishaai, Laerskool Hugo Rust, Laerskool Hugenote en Laerskool WA Joubert. Dit is die eerste atletiekbyeenkoms van sy soort op die Multifunksionele Astro veld waar daar atletiek gedoen is. Met hierdie byeenkoms het HMS Paarl bewys dat daar meer as

slegs hokkie op ‘n astro gespeel kan word.

Turbo spiese is gebruik vir spiesgooi. Dit werk dieselfde as n gewone spies - dit is van plastiek gemaak en het ‘n rubberpunt.

Hoogspring, hekkies, aflosse en naellope is ook op die astro beoefen. Verspring, diskus, gewigstoot en middelafstande is rondom die astro beoefen. Die byeenkoms gee ‘n ander perspektief op wat gedoen kan word op en rondom n astro. Dit is ‘n byeenkoms in die toekoms kan groei. Die atlete het dit baie geniet.

NUWE SKOOLHOOF

Dit is vir my so ‘n groot voorreg en eer om aangestel te wees as die nuwe skoolhoof van een van die Paarl se mooiste skoolpêreltjies. Ek het as begin-onderwyser

by Klein Larries in 1990 begin, en was bevoorreg om onder sulke bekwame onderwysers en mentors soos mevv.

Judy Beukes, Ricky van der Walt en Linda Marais te werk. In 1997 is ek na La Rochelle Hoërskool oorgeplaas, waar ek 17 wonderlike jare van onderwys beleef het. Hier is my onderwysloopbaan verder verryk deur die uiters bekwame mentors, mejj Johanna Longland en Amanda Lochner. My dogter, Magdaleen, het haar hele laerskoolloopbaan by die Klein Larries so geniet en gegroei en nou glo ek die Here stuur my terug om my Larrie-sirkel te voltooi daar waar ek begin het.

VALENTYNSDAG

WÊRELDBIDDAG VIR VROUE DAG SONDER SKOENE

Die Larries, ja, selfs die Gr R-Larries, vier Valentynsdag met entoesiasme. Dis ekstra-lekker, want hulle kan “civvies” aantrek in skakerings van rooi, pienk en wit. Ons vier die liefde en hier is ons lief vir mekaar.

Die Larries het saam met vroue van oor die wêreld heen saam gebid. ‘n Spesiale saalbyeenkoms is gehou waartydens mev. Irine Heyns die boodskap gebring het. Die Larries het op elkeen op ’n voet geskryf hoe hulle mense rondom hulle kan help om radikale liefde te wys. Die Larries het ook met “civvies” en sonder skoene skool toe gekom en ywerig skoene bygedra vir die insameling van skoene vir minderbevoorregtes. Ons gee graag uit dankbaarheid vir wat ons het.

Hy was die jongste manlike deelnemer wat dit voltooi het.

William Zulch het die seuns o.12 afdeling van die TSA WP Mini-Tennistoernooi gewen. Hy is ook gekies vir die Boland Laerskole B-tennisspan.

KASKARNAVAL

Op Saterdag, 28 Februarie 2015 het Laerskool WA Joubert ‘n opwindende KASKARNAVAL gehad by die skool.

Behalwe vir die leerders wat in graadverband met kaskarre teen mekaar meegeding het, was daar verskeie ander aktiwiteite wat plaasgevind het soos: ‘n uitstalling van veteraanmotors, springkastele en waterwurms, kosstalletjies en optrede deur die plaaslike SAPD en

die Brandweer . Radio KC het dekking gebied aan die geleentheid en verskeie kere oorgeskakel na hul direkte uitsending.

Daar was verskeie borge betrokke en die skool wil elke borg hartlik bedank vir hul betrokkenheid by ons skool. Dankie aan elke ouer, personeellid en leerder vir almal se entoesiastiese deelname. Dit was ‘n reuse sukses en ons maak volgende jaar weer so!

Op Woensdag, 25 Februarie 2015 het ‘n groep van WA Joubert se atlete aan ‘n atletiekbyeenkoms by Hoër Meisieskool deelgeneem.

Junior Novice Phox couple wins S.A Ballroom Champs

n December 2014 two of Phox Dance Academy’s amateur couples were selected for the WP Team and competed at the S.A Championships in Alberton.

We are proud to announce that Keenan Swarts and Keeshaan Swarts came 1st in the Junior Novice Ballroom section and 2nd in the Junior Novice Latin section.

Georgwin Links and Anik Trotsky made it to the Finals in both the Adult Championship Latin and Adult Championship Ballroom

sections. These are amazing achievements and we are absolutely thrilled for them. Well done Phoxes!
