Hierdie jaar se glansgeleentheid het afgespeel in Alice se Wonderland met deelnemers wat net soos karakters uit die verhaal aangetrek het. Hulle het baie moeite gedoen en die gehoor bekoor met hulle oulike en kreatiewe uitrustings. CURRO NELSPRUIT Class of 2021 Valediction It was a truly auspicious day for Curro Nelspruit to be able to host the 2021 Valediction after not being able to do so in the previous year. Due to the restrictions, and still needing to adhere to Covid-19 protocols, the ceremony was streamed to the learners and educators who were unable to attend the live event. Pastor Shaun Adams from Church Unlimited opened the event with a special devotion to the Class of 2021 by reminding us all that the only person worth competing against is ourselves and that the learners need to keep in mind that they should always try to be better only than themselves and not compare themselves to others. The Head Girl for 2021, Safa Jina, delivered a very powerful address about how special the class of 2021 really is and how they will never be forgotten as well as how much the school has done to make each and every one of the learners feel like individuals and how they were allowed to grow under the guidance of the teachers of Curro Nelspruit. Bownes delivered words of encouragement to the learners and parents who were present with an emphasis on the importance of taking responsibility for their futures while keeping in mind that they should never lose sight of the important things in life such as having a strong faith in God. A message of thanks was played followed by a slideshow that the Grade 12s had prepared showing the “highlights” of their time at Curro Nelspruit, some of whom have known each other for their entire schooling career. We are incredibly proud of our class of 2021. They have shown determination and a positive mindset throughout yet another challenging year. They maintained their high academic standard with the incredible passion and commitment of the staff. We wish them best of luck with their examinations and all future endeavors. They will always be remembered as the class whose outstanding characters allowed them to persevere and flourish during the on-going international pandemic.

Sterkpunte: My deursettingsvermoë, doelgerigtheid en veelsydigheid Swakpunt: Vrees vir mislukking, oordink (soms) situasies en probeer soms om te veel op dieselfde tyd te doen.

My sterkpunte is: Ek is vriendeilk, geduldig en ek kan `n plan maak. My swakpunte is: Ek is soms besluiteloos en let nie mooi op nie.

Ek sal graag in die top 10 wil bly en tenminste 82% op my rapport einde matriek wil hê.

Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by jou skool?

Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool?

Ek sal graag die skool `n lekker plek vir almal will maak, `n plek waarop mense kan trots voel, sodat die leerders nie vir ander skole gaan soek nie.

Curro se kulturele diversiteit, ons gees en Curro se deursettingsvermoë om jaaliks groter en beter te word. Matriek is jou laaste jaar- van ‘n akademiese oogpunt, wat sy graag wil bereik?

Ek hoop om my matriekjaar af te sluit met verskeie onderskeidings.

Na skool wil ek universiteit toe gaan en Landbou of Ingeneurswese gaan studeer. As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? The importance of maths and science in shaping one’s future Maths and science are often considered the two most difficult school subjects that are so often avoided by students, yet they can have a significant impact on what a learner can do when they leave school. STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills are critical in today’s fast-paced world, but it is evident that learners in South Africa are showing less of an appetite for subjects like maths and science.

While only 41% of Grade 9 mathematics learners demonstrated that they had acquired basic mathematical knowledge, and just 36% of learners in Grade 9 science learners had acquired basic science knowledge.

This mainly comes down to misconceptions and negative perceptions of maths and science, rather than one’s ability or aptitude for the subject. “Our youth are brought up to believe that maths and science are too difficult, that it has no real value in the real world and, therefore, they are not worth the effort,” says Prof Azwinndini Muronga, Executive Dean of Science at Nelson Mandela University.

Cultivating a curiosity through maths and science

“What many learners and parents fail to realise is that maths and science are enabling subjects that are a gateway to higher education and beyond,’’ says Prof Muronga. “They lay the foundation in applying knowledge when encountering complex principles competently in the school curriculum, at university and later on in life.”

Young people have a natural curiosity about the world around them. Learnings from maths and science ‘plant the seed’ in gaining an understanding of the order of things and how they work. These skills are honed on the education journey and applied in scenarios that go beyond the classroom, such as in the kitchen, garage, in nature and the rest of tangible reality. “Maths and science give learners more choice when it comes to applying to study at university,” says Prof Muronga. “Without them, they would not be eligible for programmes and apprenticeships in the fields of science, engineering and even commerce, as many higher education institutions place a strong emphasis on maths and science,” says Prof Muronga. Maths is also beneficial in other areas including problem-solving, quantifying and interpreting data, the comprehension of text, debating, project management, and personal finance. Science and technology can cultivate creativity, observation, analytical research, and can also have an impact on society such as sustainability and environmental conservation.

STEM in ACTION is a community engagement entity within the EBET Faculty. It supports learners, educators, and parents across the educational phases, through a handson, brains-on approach within the teaching and learning of physical science. “This constructivist approach, together with a dynamic and enthusiastic STEM in ACTION team, aims to excite learners and motivate them about the science and start considering possible careers paths,” says Prof Muronga.
