Indien jou skool wil betrokke raak, kontak gerus vir Annelize by annelize@helpendehand.co.za Ouers en leerders kan betrokke raak en enige ou of nuwe sportskoene skenk of deur `n geldelike bydra te maak. The risks of supplements

As parents or guardians, you know that the pressure to train hard, compete and achieve at a high level can lead athletes to entertain dangerous options. Saids is the Institute for Drug-Free Sport in S.A. AWSUM asked them why we should be concerned about the risks of supplements and they share the facts. The general assumption in school learners is that supplements will improve their performance on the sport field and that it is a ‘quick fix’ to reach your goals. This might be due to the confusing, sometimes dubious, claims on supplement labels. A scary fact is that one of the boys who tested positive for anabolic steroids during the Craven Week Rugby Tournament in 2018, revealed taking 18 different supplements, ranging from protein shakes and ‘mass builders’, to pre-workouts, energy boosters, etc.

Can these ingredients, that exceed safety limits, cause medical problems or hospitalization? A study report from Harvard Medical School looked at the number of ill-health events reported on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System between 2004 to 2015. They found 977 adverse event reports in the 0 – 25 year age group2. Around 40% had severe medical outcomes, including hospitalization and death. Supplements sold for muscle-building, weight loss and energy were associated with almost 3 x the risk for severe medical outcomes compared to vitamins.

Why should we be alarmed if the following claims “scientifically tested”, “proven”, “healthy”, “specifically designed for youth”, “superior”, “drug-free” appear on the supplement packaging? It is unethical marketing and outright false claims of efficacy and safety and provides hidden risks that consumers are not always aware of. In fact, researchers from the University of KZN did an analysis of 15 Whey Protein Shakes from the top-selling brands in SA and found that 9 out of the 15 were noncompliant with labelling regulations, and deliberately manipulated and overstated the protein and amino-acid content of the products.

Can supplements be taken as a supplement to nutritional needs? Advertising such as: “supplements specially designed for youth”, or that “young athletes need supplements to perform / bulk-up”, or “a normal diet is not enough” is concerning. These claims have no scientific grounds and contradicts evidence-based consensus on the value of “food first” for youth as best support for optimal health, growth and development and sporting performance (over the short- and long-term).

Are supplements being tested sufficiently? No. In reality, the majority of supplements on the market have not been sufficiently tested or scrutinised by an independent health authority, such as the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA). This problem is not unique to South Africa, but is a global concern.

Particularly in youth, a dietary supplement should only be considered (for as short duration as possible) to correct a clinically diagnosed dietary deficiency and taken under appropriate health professional guidance e.g. Registered Dietitian, who can address and optimise dietary intake as the main focus. A Dietitian can also help do a risk vs. benefit analysis and help identify low-risk products, if needed.

What are the dangerous ingredients that were found in supplements? Prescription drugs, banned substances, heavy metals, pesticides, and other dangerous chemicals. In one study, researchers analised the contents of 134 top-selling protein supplements available via the internet - many were found to contain heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, BPA (found in plastic) and other chemicals linked to cancer, liver damage and other ill-health effects3. In a study conducted by the University of Cape Town (UCT), 138 popular Protein Shakes from leading brands available on the SA market were tested for melamine content (found in plastic). The use of melamine in food production is not approved by WHO as it is related to kidney stones and kidney failure. Melamine is sometimes illegally added to food products to increase their ‘apparent’ protein content. The UCT researchers found that 57% of imported and 82% of locally produced protein shakes tested positive for melamine. Though the concentration was below toxic levels per se, there is a risk related to the amount of product the consumer will be taking (dosage), frequency, duration, and/or number of supplements the individual will be taking.

Parents should note that SAIDS supports the views of leading health and sport authorities from around the world (including the IOC) that deems it inappropriate and unethical for active and competitive adolescent athletes to be encouraged to consume dietary supplements for performance-enhancement. HOËRSKOOL LINDEN Four Linden hockey players included in provincial teams

Linden girls included in Gauteng netbal teams

Hoërskool Linden boasts this year with not just one, but four provincial boys’ hockey players. The following four boys were included in the final South Gauteng teams: Under 14: Jan-Hendrik Weidemann (D-team), under 16: Luke van Copenhagen (C-team), under 18: Juan Oosthuizen (D-team) and Mbulelo Ncube (B-team). We are extremely proud of these boys who have shown tremendous heart and dedication. Good luck with the preparations and upcoming tours.

Hoërskool Linden is incredibly proud of the following three netball girls who have been included in the final Gauteng teams: under 17 - Euané Theart and Nadia Potgieter and Fikile Ntsutle (under 18). Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement girls, we are incredibly proud of you.

Juan Oosthuizen, Jan-Hendrik Weideman, Luke van Coppenhagen en Mbulelo Ncube.

Provincial rugby Hoërskool Linden delivered a Golden Lions player, Sandile Gumede. He has been chosen part of the under 16 Golden Lions Academy team who will be participating in the provincial week over the June/ July holidays. Sandile proved his talent during trails and his hard work, discipline and fantastic sportsmanship secured him a place in the team. Linden is incredibly proud of him. Congratulations to Sandile, and good luck with Academy Week.

Nadia Potgieter, Fikile Ntsutle en Euané Theart.

Linden Hockey excels This momentous win is extra special for the team as they had only competed in the tournament once before, in 2019. In that year the team started out in the C-division of the tournament and managed to win the division. The team then moved up to the B-division, which they hadn’t been able to play due to Covid until this year. Entering the tournament this past weekend, as new additions to the B-division, the team managed to do exceptionally well in their pool games winning against Curro Aurora, Rand Park High, Marais Viljoen and St. Peters College whilst losing one game, 2-3, to Monnas. The team progressed to the finals and sat the record straight in the final game against Monument, this time defeating them 3-2. What an exceptional path this team has followed with their coach, Leon Keulder, for the last four years and the best is yet to come. “Hard work, dedication and discipline payed off and the school is especially proud of our boys,” says Hoërskool Linden’s sports manager Rúan Basson.

CURRO AURORA HIGH Equestrian

Swimming

Our Curro Aurora Equestrian riders participated in the SANESA Qualifier 3 and our teams did brilliantly well. We are so proud of all our riders. We also welcome another new rider to our primary school team, Brady Hofmeyr (our first boy team member). Our high school riders make it look so easy, which makes them wonderful role models to our younger riders. It is so lovely to watch the encouragement and support between fellow riders within the Curro Aurora equestrian community. Our primary school and preschool riders are also doing very well, they are really starting to find their footings in the competitions. They are displaying fantastic sportsmanship within their respective classes.

Grade 10 learner and proud ambassador of Curro Aurora, Alexia McCabe has successfully competed and qualified at the South African National Swimming Championships from 6 -11 April 2022 in Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth. Alexia achieved outstanding results in her age group and now ranks 3rd in the 400m freestyle division. She was privileged enough to warm up next to Olympic swimmer Tatjana Schoeman for her 200m freestyle for which she placed 5th in South Africa overall for her age group. Alexia was also selected to swim the 4 x 200m relay for team Gauteng, and as a team, they finished off 4th overall.

Another beautiful sunset for our girls’ hockey this time, as their season draws to an end. The successes of all of our ladies is testament to the hard work and dedication that every single player, coach and manager has given this season. As with the boys, our girls’ section grew to 3 squad army, making history for our school having a total of 6 hockey teams for the first time ever. One of our 1st Team Girls, Nonhle Mabaso (Grade 11) was sent through the SGHA trial process and was selected for the U18A D10 team. If we had to pick one word to describe our season, it would be “growth”. Growth, not only in numbers, but in strength, development of culture and values, and in sportsmanship. Well done to all of our girls on a great season and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
