This brand new, monthly publication offers something unique! Something Fresh! Something Awsum! It is not a community newspaper or a schools newsletter. This is a communication platform between schools and households where special achievements get to be shared and receive the credit it deserves. Think Social media! Think Facebook! Think Twitter! This publication is the hard copy version of these online mediums (but watch this space for the new media versions to follow very soon). It binds communities and it bridges towns. Awsum offers an ‘out-of-the-box’ way of sharing news between people.

CHILLI & CHRISTMAS TOGETHER WITH THE TREASURY MARKET STELLENBOSCH FRESH GOODS MARKET @ OUDE LIBERTAS SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST 2013

Why celebrate Christmas only once a year? There’s a growing trend for mid-year festive celebrations and for good reason as well. A perfect way and excuse to celebrate a Christmas in winter, the Slowmarket has decided to combine it with a red hot Chilli Festival. Christmas comes twice a year to the Slowmarket in Stellenbosch and the perfect excuse to celebrate and combine it with Christmas in winter. The Stellenbosch Fresh Goods market is the original authentic Slow Food market that has been running for over 5 years. Over 100

traders diligently support us consisting of producers selling products they have sourced, grown, raised, harvested, caught, preserved or transformed themselves. The market place is located at the Oude Libertas estate and has been re-invented as a showcase for the region’s finest food, wine, music, theatre and creative arts. At the historic Oude Libertas Estate, surrounded by vineyards and oak trees, the Slow Market is the original gourmet market for Stellenbosch where we celebrate our local food and wine heritage. Meet the neighbours, share stories and buy food which is grown, raised, harvested and transformed at source. Our market create a weekly platform for local farmers, bakers, grocers, organic merchants, finefood purveyors, butchers, artisan producers, celebrated chefs and micro businesses and shop for seasonal and locally grown produce and global street foods. A treasury market showcasing local South African designers, seasonal themes and specialty festivals all year round. The Stellenbosch Fresh Goods market conveniently brings together a variety of fine foods and wines. You will

experience an ancient way of shopping in a modern context and find the real story on how food is farmed. Goods with known provenance are sold fairly... no long cold storage, no over processed chemically laden foods, no excessive food miles or doubtful production methods. Customers get to taste before they buy and you can bargain and swap recipes in the process. Our food is fresh seasonal and locally grown making it simple, nourishing and delicious. By trading the food grown on the urban edges directly from the producers we are aiming to make the food chain more sustainable and environmentally sensitive. Come and support your friend and neighbour, the small scale artisan producer of fine foods who uses only the freshest ingredients and makes your food with

care Every 1st Saturday of each month, The Treasury market plays host to a series of monthly gatherings of artists, designers and crafters from Stellenbosch and its surroundings. Elsje Schoeman – Group Marketing Manager 072 416 4890 admin@slowmarket.co.za

At Kip McGrath Education Centres we help build the foundations for academic success. Our secret is “back to the basics” and individual attention. We offer professional tutoring for primary through to high school students and has been such a success worldwide. The rst priority is an accurate assessment of the child’s learning status and abilities. An apparent problem with mathematics may well be due to a reading de ciency and reading problems can result from all manner of causes. Parents’ concerns are established and the results of the assessme assessments are discussed con dentially. Once a problem and its causes have been identi ed, the child is placed on a program to suit his/her individual need. The programs are designed so that progress is constant and accelerated. It also gives the children the motivation to succeed. Children often experience success for the rst time at a Kip McGrath Education Centre, because they start working at their own level. Parents who bring their children to KipMcGrath Centres are grateful to have found someone who can help correct their child’s problems with school work.

PRG u19A’s – Brothers’ Cape Town International Schools Finalists The Paul Roos u19A Hockey team has been involved with the Brothers’ Festival since its inception in 2003 and on Sunday 21st July 2013 – one decade later – made the final for the 1st time. Paul Roos faced Rondebosch in the all Western Cape final after both schools remained unbeaten through the group phase and won their respective semi-finals. PRG started rather poorly and conceded within the 1st 2 minutes! This rocked the boys from the Boland and Rondebosch capitalised even further on the Paul Roosers

sluggish start by converting a penalty corner 10 minutes later. This seemed to shock the Men in Maroon into action and they duly responded before half-time. During the interval Paul Roos had regrouped and came out a more determined and focused team to show that they were worthy finalists and would not be bullied by the Cape Town team. With more possession and territory the Maroon Machine took the game by the scruff of the neck and Perryn Uys coolly slotted a well-worked penalty corner for Paul Roos – the

momentum had truly swung in their favour. Rondebosch were starting to show signs that they might crack under the wave of pressure by turning the ball over very regularly. Paul Roos had two glorious opportunities to equalise and take the game into extra-time but alas that would not be the case. Well done to Rondebosch for winning the gold medal but we must also congratulate Paul Roos for their efforts in making the final a worthy spectacle.

Hy is immers PRG se SEMPER se redakteur.

Daar was rolprente soos Roepman, Jakkalsdans, Platteland, Hoofmeisie, en Ek joke net.

10 AUGUST 2013 PAREL VALLEI ADVANCED EDUCATION TRUST The Parel Vallei Advanced Education Trust was formally established in 2006 to support and provide advanced educational opportunities to pupils at Parel Vallei High School as well as any deserving educational institution in the Helderberg Basin. The Trustees have a vision of enabling children to develop academically beyond the con-fines of a National curriculum. The Parel Vallei Advanced Education Centre has Parel Vallei High School as its base where Cambridge International Examination courses as well as IEB A-P Mathematics courses are offered. Since its inception this Trust as grown slowly but steadily and has served Parel Vallei extremely well. On this sheet, some of the projects and events which the Trust has undertaken are listed. Since 2013 the Trust is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and any donations which are made into this trust are claimable from tax. Readers are invited to support this trust and in this way ensure that Parel Vallei High School will always be at the top (or near the top!) of the Academic pile. Prior to registration in 2006, the Trust invested in a special projector screen for the Geography room. It also sponsored one of the A-level teachers to attend a training course in Cambridge, England. Mrs Leonie Barnard, who later went on to become the Head of Department for the A-levels within the school, made full use of this op-portunity and she was able to plough her knowledge into the Trust’s Education Centre. The Trust would be lost without the excellent services of Mrs. Yvonne Gerber who has kept all records and administered the Trust diligently since its inception.

We bought a Laptop Comput-er for her to be able to work both at the office and at home. This was in fact the first asset the trust acquired as all previous items purchased were donated to Parel Vallei. Here she is on the right behind her Laptop which became the heart of the Trust’s business. In 2010 we started using Ledbury as an exam venue and acquired chairs and tables which enabled us to let the A-level students write in the reception hall of this building. This has been a real boon for the pupils who feel really special when they are set apart from the rest of the school. We also bought a two drawer filing cabinet for our record keeping. In 2010 the school built 8 extra specialist classrooms and up-graded the sport hall. This in-cluded a new Library which had to be furnished. The Trust donated the bulk of the money for this purpose and the beauti-ful solid oak tables and shelves have made the library a very special place for all our pupils. 2012 was a special year in terms of ex-pansion of the school’s buildings. The Ed-ucation Department invested R7,6 million in Parel Vallei and 10 classrooms were built. Two of these classrooms were fitted as extra Science and Biology labs. The Trust donated liberally for this purpose and our pupils are loving these new 5 star facilities. The Trust has also invested in the future of teaching in the school by providing a bursary to one of its past head boys. Lukas Muller, Headboy of 2006, currently completing his Post Graduate Certificate in Education after doing a BA Degree, will be eligible for a teaching post at Parel Vallei in 2014. This bursary for his final year has ensured that we are able to appoint an excellent teacher who knows and understands the ethos of the school, providing continuity and stability into the future.

Once again Hottentots-Holland High School will be the host of a fantastic and exciting musical. This year we welcome Cinderella van die Kaap – The Musical. This production was written specifically to showcase the tremendous talent and it consists of 50 cast members all singing, dancing and acting to their heart’s content. You will encounter a new and truly South African twist with this version of the classic story known by all. The complex mixing-bowl of characters include Helen Thriller, Cinderella’s evil political stepmom, Brenda the shebeen queen, a retired fairy godmother, a new Nigerian family called the Ajibakas and a group of stray animals who help Cinderella find her place. The action quickly turns into crazy fun with lots of gossip, miscommunications and jealousy on Tamatiestraat in a row of semi-detached houses in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap.
