FALL FACTS by Kathy Wolfe
Here in North America, autumn is defined as “the period between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice.” Learn more about this beautiful season and its events as Tidbits examines the month of October. • The first day of Autumn occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving south, either on September 22nd or September 23rd. On that day, the light and dark hours are exactly the same length, hence, the term “equinox.” Autumn ends with the winter solstice, December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. • The word “autumn” has its origins in the Old French word autompne. “October” takes its name from the Latin, meaning “eighth month.” Under the old Roman calendar, when March was the first month of the year, October was in fact the eighth month. • We all love to see the leaves change in the Fall. The bright foliage is a byproduct of chemical changes in a tree as it begins to go dormant for the colder weather. Leaves actually have just as much yellow pigment during July as they do in October. But in July, the darker green pigment, chlorophyll, masks the yellow xanthophyll. As sunlight decreases, a tree stops producing chlorophyll, and the other colors begin to show through.
