Take a deep breath as Tidbits informs you about your lungs in commemoration of National Lung Health Day on October 19.

• The function of your lungs is to extract oxygen from the atmosphere and transfer it into the bloodstream, while releasing carbon dioxide from the bloodstream out into the atmosphere. As you breathe in and your lungs expand, they pull air into the body. When they contract, carbon dioxide, a waste gas is expelled. The lungs don’t pump the air in and out, as they don’t have the muscles to do so.

That process is completed by the diaphragm and rib cage. During heavy exertion, some accessory muscles in the neck and abdomen are called in to assist.

• The lungs are located within the rib cage for protection, and are connected to the spinal cord at the back and the chest bone at the front.

• The air that is drawn in by the body travels down the throat and into the windpipe, or trachea. The trachea then divides into smaller pathways, the bronchial tubes, which in turn go into each lung. The air sacs inside these tubes, 480 million to 600 million in all, are known as alveoli.

• Infection in the lungs is combated by tiny immune cells located in the alveoli sacs. The function of these cells, known as macrophages, is to gobble up germs before then can create an infection. There are also cells that act as defense mechanisms to protect your body from pollution and contamination by producing mucous that guards against dust and dirt.

• The pair of lungs is not symmetrical, that is, they are not identical to each other in balanced proportion, mirroring each other. The right lung is slightly larger than the left, containing three segments, or lobes, while the left has only two. Although the right lung is wider, it’s also a little shorter in order to accommodate the liver, while the left lung is narrower to make room for the heart.

• The combined weight of an adult’s lungs is about 2.5 lbs., of which nearly half is blood. Not much weight, but their area is very large – if they were totally spread out, they would cover the surface area of a tennis court.

• Male lungs typically hold more air than female lungs. At rest, a man’s lungs hold around 1.5 pints of air, compared to a woman’s capacity of about 0.7 pints.

• Lungs are controlled by the brain, which tells the lungs how much to inhale or exhale. The average person breathes in about 13 pints of air every minute. The body uses just 5% of oxygen that is inhaled, with the remainder being exhaled. And every hour, we exhale 1.15 tablespoons of water.

• Your lungs aren’t just filled with air. About 9% of the total blood of the circulatory system, approximately 15.2 oz. is contained in the lungs.

• Deep breaths are beneficial to your health! If you’re in pain or under stress, breathing deeply into your lungs can ease the effects of both. This activity also aids the practice of meditation and yoga. Shallow breathing creates an accumulation of carbon dioxide. The body attempts to draw in more oxygen to remove the buildup by the simple process of yawning! However, high levels of CO2 can create more serious effects that may require medical attention, such as drowsiness, tremors, dizziness, and headaches. Obesity and sleep apnea can be contributors to the buildup of CO2.

• Many people live a healthy life with just one lung. Because each lung is surrounded by its own membrane sac that separates it from the chest wall, when one lung is damaged, the other can go on working. There might be a few difficulties while exercising or doing strenuous activities, but generally, there is little effect. If part of one lung is collapsed or surgically removed, the remaining lung will take up the space. ...continued

• What happens when lungs don’t work right?

More than 25 million Americans and 235 million worldwide have asthma, a chronic lung disease in which the air passageways become inflamed and swollen, tightening and narrowing so that air flow is slowed down, making it had to breathe, and creating wheezing and tightness of chest. Many things can trigger an asthma attack, including allergens, exercise, smoke, pollution, or infection.

• Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. for both men and women. It’s no surprise that the leading cause of lung cancer is smoking, due to the high amounts of tar left in the lungs. About 80% of lung cancer deaths are the result of smoking and a smoker is 15 to 30 times more likely to get it than a non-smoker.

• COPD, a progressive lung disease, makes breathing difficult due to excess mucus and/or degeneration of the lungs. As with lung cancer, the most common cause of COPD is smoking, with 80% to 90% of its deaths attributed to smoking. Some people who suffer from COPD have genetic factors or have been exposed to heavy air pollution or workplace dust, chemicals, or fumes. There are several different types of COPD, including chronic bronchitis, which is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, and emphysema, which occurs when the tiny alveoli sacs are destroyed.

• Just because you have to cough doesn’t mean your lungs have a problem. Lots of things cause coughing and the average person normally coughs about 10 times a day.

• On Oct. 24, 1775, a British naval fleet of six ships sails up the James River to destroy the town of Norfolk, Virginia.

Expecting the Patriots and local militia to come charging and to engage in open combat, the British were surprised to come under fire from expert riflemen, who began striking down British troops at a distance.

“You say it’s only a paper moon, sailing over a cardboard sea” goes the old 1933 tune that provided the title for the 1973 comedy/ drama “Paper Moon.” Tidbits takes a look at the facts about this classic movie.

• Although 8-year-old Tatum O’Neal had no acting experience, Bogdanovich had worked with her father previously and asked the girl to audition.

Simply brush the wet bristles of a toothbrush over the base and it’ll get in those nooks and crannies you can’t reach with a sponge.

• Remove mildew from plastic shower curtains by spraying them with a mix of bleach and water, or just toss them in the washing machine with your next load of towels.

Scammers' Tricks Are No Treat

They never give up. Scammers are still taking every opportunity to steal our identity and separate us from our money, and the list keeps growing. Here are a few of the scams out there now: Seniors are getting calls from people who claim to be employees of the Department of Justice. Reports to the National Elder Fraud Hotline say that these scammers pretend to be investigators, and what they want is your personal information. If you get a call like this, don't be concerned that it's an authentic government call. It isn't.

Just hang up.

Maybe you'll get a call wanting to sell you an air purifier. They'll claim it will clean any coronavirus out of the air in your home. Maybe they'll try to get you to put it on a credit card, or they'll claim it's Medicare approved and all you need to do is give them your Medicare number. Don't fall for either of these tricks.

Scammers will try these same tactics with miracle cures for COVID, masks that are "guaranteed" to protect you, face shields, vitamin supplements, free COVID tests, low-cost prescription drugs and much more.

Sometimes scammers pretending to be from the government will try to get your personal information by saying they want to send you a stimulus check, or maybe they claim to need Census 2020 information.

Sometimes it's about an expired warranty on your car or lower interest rates.

Just hang up. Don't press 1 or any other number to have your number taken off their list. All that does is give them another opportunity to convince you to give up personal information.

If someone you don't know leaves a message about any of these topics, ignore it.

Remember that we seniors are the preferred target of these scammers. Don't fall for their tricks.

VA SCAMS IN FLORIDA

What's going on in Florida? It appears more criminals are operating there than in other areas of the country.

One criminal near Tampa worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs as a transportation assistant who awarded contracts to vendors to give rides to VA clinic patients. Vendors had to pay kickbacks to him to be awarded contracts.

Eventually the criminal started up two transportation companies of his own, registering them in the names of his wife and daughter to hide his involvement. Invoices were submitted, and they were paid to the tune of $305,000 over the course of 17 months.

When the whole scheme started coming down around their heads, they all lied and then got tangled up in those lies. Wife and daughter claimed they ran the two companies, yet the criminal was the one who registered the vehicles and arranged for insurance. Later, the criminal said his wife and daughter had seized control of the companies without his knowledge and were blackmailing him into giving them transportation contracts and assignments. All three pleaded guilty.

Also on Florida's west coast, a criminal operated a telemarketing scam where employees sold medical testing to patients and then turned those into prescriptions that looked like exams had been done via telemedicine.

Signatures on the fake prescriptions were obtained from doctors in exchange for bribes. The prescriptions, submitted to the VA, netted the criminal over $3 million, and he's been sentenced to four years in the federal penitentiary.

Then, on the east coast of Florida, a former VA employee was nabbed for threatening to kill another employee and that employee's family. Not too bright, leaving threatening messages on somebody's cellphone ... more than once. This fool could get a year in the federal pen and a $100,000 fine.

PAPER SONGS

How about these songs all with a title that contains the word “paper”?

• We owe the Beatles’ hit “Paperback Writer” to Paul McCartney’s Aunt Lil, who challenged her nephew to write it. In McCartney’s words, Lil asked him, “Why do you always write songs about love all the time? Can’t you ever write about a horse or the summit conference or something interesting?” McCartney wrote it in January, 1966, and it became the first Number 1 hit for the Beatles that was not about love. The lyrics are a letter from an aspiring author seeking a publisher for his paperback novel, composed after McCartney had helped set up the Indica Bookshop, where he was also the first customer.

Released in May, 1966, it was the Beatles’ 11th single.

• Marie Osmond was just 14 years old when her hit “Paper Roses” reached Number 1 on the Billboard country charts, making her the youngest solo artist to accomplish that feat. The song was her first release as a solo performer apart from brother Donny, and was released in August, 1973. It soon crossed over to pop radio, climbing to the Number 5 spot, as well as Number 1 on the Easy Listening chart. “Paper Roses” wasn’t new to the charts – it had first been recorded by Anita Bryant in 1960, who had also reached Number 5 on the pop charts with the song.

• The jazz quartet The Mills Brothers recorded “Paper Doll” in 1943, but used it on the “B” side of what was expected to be the bigger hit “I’ll Be Around.” “Paper Doll” was recorded in 15 minutes, and sold six million copies, becoming the brothers’ biggest hit. The four brothers were the sons of a barber who founded a barbershop quartet. The Mills Brothers recorded upwards of 2,000 songs, with sales exceeding 50 million copies, and more than three dozen gold records. ...continued

• For those not familiar with zydeco music, a blend of Cajun and blues music, developed in southwest Louisiana. In 1954, Boozoo Chavis brought the style into the public’s eyes with his recording of “Paper in My Shoe,” the first zydeco hit. There are a number of theories as to the meaning of the song. Some say he was so poor, he had to put paper in his shoes to cover the holes. Others claim it meant he kept a marriage license in his shoe, as was done with valuable papers, and to conceal his marriage from his mother and father. According to hoodoo legend, a person can write the name of their enemy on a paper and put it in their shoe, which keeps the enemy under foot. With every step, the enemy is ground beneath the person’s heel. Chavis claimed his song sold over a million copies, but because the record company maintained that number was 150,000, Chavis distrusted the industry, and refused to record again or perform in public until 1984. In the meantime, he turned to raising champion racehorses.

• “It’s Only a Paper Moon” was published in 1933, with music by Harold Arlen (of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” fame). It’s been recorded by several notable artists over the past many years, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Miles Davis. The 1933 movie “Take a Chance” featured the song, and it was revived 40 years later in the 1973 film “Paper Moon,” in which it was sung by Peggy Healy, who recorded the hit the year it was published.

• Willie Nelson wrote “Pretty Paper” in 1963, inspired by a street vendor, whose legs had been amputated, peddling pencils and paper on the streets, calling out, “Pretty paper! Pretty paper!” The song was a hit for Roy Orbison in 1963 and Nelson recorded his own version of the song the following year.
