How big is the biggest? This week, Tidbits hits the road to discover the largest – from malls to airports to cities.

• Seven of the world’s 15 largest airports are in the United States, but not the No. 1. Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd International Airport is the biggest airport by surface area, with a 6-story terminal covering 3.52 million square feet.

Denver International Airport is a distant second, but claims the longest public use runway in the nation. Dallas/Fort Worth, the world’s third largest, has five terminals, and is followed by the Orlando, Florida international airport at No. 4, and Washington Dulles at No. 5. All of these U.S. airports might be the largest, but they don’t qualify as the busiest. The annual passenger count of 50 million at the Atlanta airport qualifies it as the nation’s busiest, a figure that is 20 million more than Denver.

• Arizona is home to America’s two largest city parks. Scottsdale contains the largest with over 30,500 acres. Next is the South Mountain Preserve in Phoenix, spanning 16,283 acres. New York City’s Central Park might seem big, but it covers just 843 acres, about 2.5 miles in length and a half mile in width between 59th Street and 110th Street. South America’s Amazon River contains islands that are larger than Central Park.

• Not only is East Rutherford home to the nation’s largest shopping mall, the nearby MetLife stadium is at the top of the list of largest NFL stadiums. It’s the only NFL stadium shared by two teams – the New York Jets and the New York Giants – with a seating capacity of 82,500.

Located 8 miles west of New York City, construction costs were $1.6 billion, making it the most expensive stadium constructed at the time of its opening in 2010.

• FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins has a seating capacity of 82,000, making it the second largest stadium. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum had the largest capacity for many years, but a 2018 renovation reduced the number of seats to 77,500, bringing it down to fifth place below the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium. (Numbers based on main seating capacity, not the maximum expandable capacity).

• New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are America’s top three most populous cities, but the list of the largest cities by land area is much different. Sitka, Alaska is at the top of the list by land area. With a population of around 10,000, the community spans 4,811 square miles of area.

That area does include water areas, making it seem much larger. Three other Alaskan cities, Juneau, Wrangell, and Anchorage, round out the top four. Two small Montana communities are in 6th and 7th place, Anaconda and Butte, respectively. Anaconda (population 9,300) has a land area of 741 sq. miles and Butte (population 33,600) is close behind at 716 sq. miles. By comparison, Los Angeles with a population of nearly 4 million, covers just 735 sq. miles.

• Orlando’s Disney World Resort’s four theme parks cover 43 sq. miles, about twice the size of Manhattan! CORONAVIRUS SCAMMERS

Scammers have come up with even more ways to defraud us, this time using the coronavirus.

Contact tracers are people who make calls when someone you know has tested positive for the coronavirus. Their job is to trace the possible path the virus has taken from person to person. They only need health information and the places you've been, not financial or personal information. If someone calls you who insists on knowing additional information as part of the contact tracing, hang up.

If you get emails or calls from someone saying they have a cure for the virus, or a sure-fire method of being certain you don't get it, hang up. Their next questions will likely be to ask for your personal or financial information, or a credit card number so you can pay for shipping. Don't fall for it. There are no approved test kits or cures that can be handed out to the general public.

If you get email that's supposedly from the government asking about where to send your stimulus relief check, ignore it. The government is not going to contact you about that. They'll send your check (if you're eligible for one) in the mail or they'll deposit it directly into your account, the same one where they deposit your Social Security benefit. Scammers also will pretend to be people from your bank.

If you get a robocall saying you qualify for lowcost coronavirus insurance, hang up.

If you get suspicious email that looks like it might be from the government with information about coronavirus, don't open it, and especially don't click on any links. Those can put a virus or tracer on your computer.

Protect Yourself From West Nile Virus!

Grand Forks Health Department has identified West Nile Virus (WNV) in the region. WNV is a serious disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Most people infected with this disease will have no symptoms or mild symptoms but this is a serious disease and can be fatal. The Grand Forks Public Health Department urges citizens to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The type of mosquito most common for transmitting WNV is present in our area and is most active from dusk until dawn.

Please take the necessary measures to avoid mosquito bites.

How do people get infected with WNV? Most people get infected with WNV by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals. In a very small number of cases, West Nile virus has been spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.

Can I get West Nile virus directly from birds?

There is no evidence that a person can get infected from handling live or dead infected birds. However, you should avoid bare-handed contact when handling any dead animal. If you must pick up a dead bird, use gloves or an inverted plastic bag to place the bird’s carcass (body) in a garbage bag.

Why do some states and local areas stop collecting dead birds to test for West Nile virus?

West Nile virus is found in all 48 contiguous states (not in Alaska and Hawaii) and the virus circulates in mosquitoes and birds every year. Because West Nile virus is well established, some states and local jurisdictions are no longer collecting dead birds for testing. Instead, they have chosen to shift staff and funding resources away from testing of dead birds to other areas of West Nile virus surveillance and control.

Who is at risk for serious illness if infected with WNV? Serious illness can occur in people of any age. However, people over 50 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and people who have received organ transplants, are also at greater risk for serious illness.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Because September has been designated World Alzheimer’s Month, Tidbits is providing some facts on this debilitating disease that affects an estimated five million Americans.

• In 1901, while working in a Frankfurt, Germany asylum, Dr. Aloysius Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, observed unusual behavioral symptoms in a 51-year-old female patient, including memory loss and trouble with thinking. Over the next five years, Alzheimer and his colleague Emil Kraepelin studied the woman’s symptoms in depth, and upon her death in 1906, Alzheimer brought her brain to his laboratory. Here he discovered that certain parts of her brain were shrunken and contained tangled clumps of nerve fibers and plaque. In 1910, the condition, which had been called “pre-senile dementia,” became known as Alzheimer’s Disease, in honor of his research and discoveries.

• Beta-amyloid plaques form from leftover protein fragments that cluster together. Together the clusters form larger plaques that have a toxic effect on neurons and interfere with communication from one cell to another in the rain.

Of the estimated five million Americans, nearly twice as many women have AD as men, and the condition worsens more quickly in women as well. • Early symptoms include memory loss that disrupts daily life and difficulty completing familiar tasks, such as writing a grocery list or driving to a familiar location. There is confusion with time, days, and seasons and with places, such as “How did I get here?”

• Problems arise with speaking, including stopping in the middle of a conversation or forgetting familiar words. People often misplace things or put them in unusual places. A change in personality is noted – distrust of others, depression, anxiety, and loss of inhibitions, as well as a change in good grooming habits.

• Because the disease progresses at different rates from person to person, it’s impossible to predict a person’s life expectancy after onset. The average is four to eight years after diagnosis, with older adults usually living three to four years.

A younger adult’s prognosis can be 10 years or more; however, those who are otherwise physically healthy can live as long as 20 years.

• Why does a person get Alzheimer’s Disease? Scientists say that it is caused by a combination of factors – genetic, lifestyle, and environment – that affect the brain over the years. Those with a parent or sibling with A.D. have a somewhat higher risk, as do those who have experienced a severe head trauma. Those who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep have an increased risk. Heart disease can raise the risk of getting A.D., and those things that cause heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poorly-controlled diabetes, smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise, are also linked to a higher risk.

• While A.D. is not a preventable condition, studies indicate that mental stimulation and engaging in mentally-challenging tasks and puzzles
