• Animators in “Up” drew every single one of the 10,297 balloons that lifted the cartoon house into the air.

• In “V For Vendetta” the character V tips over black and red dominoes to form a giant letter V. This scene involved 22,000 dominoes and required four people 200 hours to set up. The scene itself lasts just 30 seconds.

• Sylvester Stallone wanted to make sure the boxing scenes looked real in “Rocky IV” so he instructed Dolph Lundgren to actually hit him. A punch to the chest left Stallone in intensive care for four days.

• In the 1979 “Mad Max” film, funds were running low so director George Miller offered his own van for a crash scene.

• On the set of the “Hunger Games” Jennifer Lawrence boasted to co-star Josh Hutcherson that she could kick all the way over his head. Instead, she gave him a concussion.

• In “Gone Girl,” actor Ben Affleck refused to wear a New York Yankees ball cap for a scene, even going so far as to halt filming over the tiff.

In the film “The Quick and the Dead” which is set in the pre-automobile era of 1881, the vehicle is disguised as a wagon.

• The iconic red stapler coveted by Milton in the 1999 film “Office Space” was created by the prop department. They needed a bright color, so they chose red. After the movie’s release, Swingline stapler company received thousands of requests for red staplers. Despite discontinuing the color years before, Swingline brought it back due to popular demand and the red stapler has been its best seller ever since.

WEST NILE VIRUS HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN GRAND FORKS West Nile virus (WNV) is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito most common for transmitting this virus is one that is widespread throughout the Grand Forks region. This mosquito does not discriminate. People of all ages are susceptible to WNV infection, but the elderly are at higher risk for developing the more severe form of this disease (neuroinvasive illness). Children infected with WNV generally show no symptoms or may have a mild fever.

WEST NILE VIRUS WARNING

Risk factors for West Nile virus: • Time of year – The majority of WNV cases occur in August.

• Geographic region – The Dakotas have reported some of the highest cases per capita in the United States.

• Time spent outdoors not wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellent – If you work or spend a lot of time outdoors (golfing, gardening, hunting, etc.), you’re at a higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes.

• Proximity – If you live in an area where WNV has already been identified or near mosquito larval habitat.

• If you have a weakened immune system.

The best way to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites.

• Use mosquito-repellant products containing DEET. • Wear long sleeves and pants.

• Eliminate any standing water from your property, such as trash bins, plant saucers, rain gutters, buckets, etc.

The mosquito most common for transmitting this disease generally stays close to the site it hatched from. Don’t let it be a container or rain gutter from your own property.

• A tarantula discovered in 2015 near Folsom Prison, California, was given the scientific name "Aphonopelma johnnycashi" after Johnny Cash, in honor of his song "Folsom Prison Blues."

• For that matter, "The Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin had a snail named after him, the "Crikey steveirwini," a rare species of tree snail with a khaki-colored shell discovered in 2009.

• Some 60% of human DNA is identical to that of a banana.

• The maddening but addictive Rubik's Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

• "Slaughterhouse-Five" author Kurt Vonnegut was such a big fan of the TV series "Cheers" that he once told reporters he would rather have written scripts for the show than all his bestselling novels.

• The 1981 film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was produced

by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Despite having this dream team, the film was initially turned down by every studio in Hollywood. Only after much persuasion did Paramount agree to do it.

• Indiana Jones was originally Indiana Smith. George Lucas’ dog was an Alaskan malamute named Indiana, (“Indy” for short) who also served as the inspiration for Chewbacca in “Star Wars.” Spielberg felt there were already too many movies with “Smith” in the title.

• Lucas was reluctant to cast Harrison Ford in the role because he was already starring in the Star Wars films, but Spielberg insisted, after their first choice of Tom Selleck fell through. CBS barred Selleck from appearing in the show due to his obligations to his show “Magnum, P.I.” Ford was added to the cast just two weeks before shooting began.

• Likewise, Danny DeVito was the first choice for the comedy relief part of Sallah, but was forbidden from accepting the role due to his obligations for the show “Taxi.” The part went to John Rhys-Davies instead.

• In the temple in the opening scene of the movie, little hieroglyphs of R2-D2 and C-3PO are engraved on the wall. They can also be seen on a golden pillar in the Well of Souls.

• An iconic moment is when Indy faces an expert swordsman, only to shoot him dead. The original scene was long and complicated, but it was hot that day, and most of the crew were sick with food poisoning, so Harrison Ford suggested this quick end to the scene so they could all quit filming for the day.

• The stare-down between Indy and the cobra was filmed using a sheet of glass between them. The cobra was fairly angry and spit venom on the glass.

• The truck chase sequence took five weeks to film, for six minutes of screen time.

• Many of the film’s more elaborate sets were roomsized scale miniatures.

• In one scene, Satipo shoos away a few tarantulas from Indy’s back, causing Indy to make Satipo turn around to reveal his entire back covered in tarantulas. The tarantulas all stood still. When he asked why they weren’t moving, the tarantula wranglers informed Spielberg that all of the tarantulas were males so they weren’t acting aggressively. When they put a female on his back, the male tarantulas were thrown into a frenzy.

• In the scene where they descend into the Well of Souls to uncover the Ark, there were about 2,000 snakes on set for the scene. Spielberg was unhappy because there were not enough snakes to cover the floor of the large chamber. They raided all the pet shops in London and Europe for more snakes, then added legless lizards as well, and padded that with hoses cut to look like snakes.

In the end they had about 10,000 snakes. No word on what happened to the snakes following the filming.

• The sound effects for ten thousand slithering snakes came from fingers running through a warm cheese casserole as well as wet sponges being dragged across the grip tape on a skateboard. The ghostly moans as the specters escape from the Ark are a combination of sea lion and dolphin cries. The sound of the lid being lifted off the Ark is actually the heavy ceramic top of a toilet tank being lifted off a toilet. The sound of the boulder rolling after Indy was actually the sound of a Honda Civic driving over gravel.

• This was 1981’s highest grossing film by a wide margin. The film earned $389.9 million off an $18 million budget. The film was so popular that it spawned four sequels (so far).

• On Sept. 4, 1957, Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus enlists the National Guard to prevent nine Black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock. The armed Arkansas militia troops surrounded the school while an angry crowd of some 400 whites jeered, booed and threatened to lynch the frightened teenagers.

• On Sept. 5, 1969, Lt. William Calley is charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of 109 Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in March 1968. Calley, a platoon leader, had led his men in a massacre that was only stopped when a pilot landed his helicopter between the Americans and the fleeing South Vietnamese.

• On Sept. 1, 1972, American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer defeats Russian Boris Spassky during the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. Fischer became the first American to win the competition since its inception in 1866.

• On Aug. 31, 1997, shortly after midnight, Diana, Princess of Wales dies in a car crash in Paris. She was 36. Her boyfriend, the Egyptian-born socialite Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the car died as well. A swarm of paparazzi on motorcycles had been aggressively tailing their car.

• Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero was experimenting in 1846. He dripped glycerin (derived from fats such as peanut oil) into a container of nitric and sulfuric acids. The result looked similar to olive oil. Sobreo put a single drop in a sealed test tube and held it over a flame. The test tube exploded, showering him with glass. Experiments showed that four molecules of this substance would transform into 35 molecules of gas within a millionth of a second, far more powerful than gunpowder.

• However, this explosive very unstable, often spontaneously exploding. Sobrero called it “pyroglycerine” and considered it too volatile to have any practical use.

• Alfred Nobel’s father made cannonballs, mortars, mines, and torpedoes for Russia during the Crimean War. One day in school young Alfred watched his instructor smear a single drop of a substance on an anvil. The teacher smacked the anvil with a hammer and it blew sky high. Alfred Nobel was convinced that the substance, now called nitroglycerine, could have a huge impact on his father’s business. He began experimenting, trying to find a way to stabilize the unstable substance.

• The result was his invention of the blasting cap that could safely trigger the explosion of nitroglycerine using a fuse.

• In 1864 scored his first big order, sent to help build the Suez Canal. Then one day 250 pounds of nitroglycerin stored in a shed near his lab blew up, killing five people including his brother. Alfred never found out what triggered the explosion. More explosions happened as nitroglycerine was being shipped around the world. He needed a stabilizer.

• One day he poured some nitroglycerin into a pile of soft white clay called diatomaceous earth which was easily available at a river near his factory.

• Diatomaceous earth is the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. Today there are hundreds of applications for it. Nobel found the clay stabilized nitroglycerine, and could be molded. He named it dynamite, from the Greek word for “power” and patented it in 1867.

• Dynamite was still very deadly, killing workers on a regular basis. One Swiss tunnel cost an average of 25 workers per mile. But the substance was so handy for blasting canals, blowing up mountains, and excavating mines that the human cost seemed part of the bargain. London’s first subway was made possible because of dynamite. There were many uses for it during wars as well.

• Over time, sticks of dynamite “sweat” nitroglycerin, which can pool in the bottom of the storage container. Crystals form on the outside of the sticks, causing them to be susceptible to shock, friction, and temperature. The blasting cap did stabilize new dynamite, but old dynamite still remained unstable. Today, modern packaging techniques help eliminate this risk. Another inventor discovered the explosive called TNT which is far more stable than dynamite.

• Eventually Alfred Nobel owned 93 factories in 21 countries, amassing a fortune equal to a quarter billion dollars today.

• Alfred never married and never had children.

He received 355 patents during his lifetime.

• When another brother died of natural causes in 1888, a French newspaper mistakenly thought Alfred was dead and ran an obituary titled, “The Merchant of Death is Dead.”

• Realizing how much hatred there was for him and his invention, and how much damage his invention had done, Alfred Nobel used his fortune to set up a prize to reward outstanding research in chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, and economics: The Nobel Prize.
