• In 2010, the lottery in Israel drew the same six numbers it did three weeks earlier. The chance of this is one in four trillion.

• Ren Xiaofeng, a manager of The Agricultural Bank of China, stole $26,000 from the bank in 2007 with the intention of buying lottery tickets, winning, and repaying the initial theft. Against the odds, it worked, so he tried again with $6.7 million. He lost all but $95,000. He was executed in 2008.

• A police officer offered to split a lottery ticket with a waitress at a restaurant in New York as a tip in 1984. It won $6 million, and he kept his word. They each received a payout of $285,715 a year over 21 years.

• Iowa resident Tyler Heep won $1.00 from a scratch-off ticket, drove to Lottery Headquarters, and demanded a gigantic novelty check. They wrote him out an oversized check and had him hold it up for a photo. Heep used his winnings to buy 1/2 a gallon of gas.

• In 2011, a town in Spain suffering from budget problems bought as many lottery tickets as possible. The gamble paid off, and the town of 2,000 people took in a prize worth nearly half a million dollars.

• An Oregon woman won $1 million in 2005, but when authorities learned that she purchased it using the credit card of her boyfriend's dead mother, along with $12,000 in illegal purchases, they confiscated it. Her winnings went to the Police Department.

• Glenda Blackwell bought a scratch off lottery ticket to prove to her husband it was a waste of money. She accidentally won $1 million.

• Bill Morgan was once pronounced dead but was revived 14 minutes later. To celebrate, he bought a scratch-off ticket and won a car worth $17,000.

While he was reacting to his win during a news interview, he scratched off another ticket and won another $250,000.

• As Shakespeare said, what's in a name? A duck is called a duck because it ducks its head under the water to feed. The animal was named after the verb, not the other way around.

• In the era of TV dinners, it wasn't enough that you ATE your veggies. No, etiquette experts still found time to make some interesting rules about HOW you consumed them as well. According to one guide, asparagus should be cut in half in order to avoid "the ungraceful appearance of a bent stalk ... falling limply into someone's mouth."

WEST NILE VIRUS RISK FACTORS West Nile virus (WNV) is an infection transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito most common for transmitting this virus is one that is widespread throughout the Grand Forks region. This mosquito does not discriminate. People of all ages are susceptible to WNV infection, but the elderly are at higher risk for developing the more severe form of this disease (neuroinvasive illness). Children infected with WNV generally show no symptoms or may have a mild fever.

• What's in a name? Part 2: The French name for cotton candy is "Barbe a papa," or "dad's beard."

• Mary Babnik Brown generously donated 34 inches of her natural golden locks to the United States military during World War II after they determined that blond hair that had never been treated or exposed to heat was the most resilient material to use as the crosshairs in bombsights.

• A 7-year-old boy had long complained about his swollen and aching jaw, and small wonder: Surgeons at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, found 526 teeth crammed inside his mouth! After removing a seven-ounce, "well-defined bag-like mass" from his jaw containing hundreds of miniature teeth, it took the team five hours to carefully search for and count all of them. The hospital asserted that it was "the first ever case to be documented worldwide, where so many minute teeth were found in a single individual."

Risk factors for West Nile virus: • Time of year – The majority of WNV cases occur from July – September.

• Geographic region – The Dakotas have reported some of the highest cases per capita in the United States.

• Time spent outdoors not wearing protective clothing and mosquito repellent – If you work or spend a lot of time outdoors (golfing, gardening, hunting, etc.), you’re at a higher risk of being bitten by mosquitoes.

• Proximity – If you live in an area where WNV has already been identified or near mosquito larval habitat.

• If you have a weakened immune system.

The best way to prevent West Nile virus infection is to avoid mosquito bites.

• Use mosquito-repellent products containing DEET. • Wear long sleeves and pants.

• Stephen King got the idea for the book “The Shining” when he stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, on the last day of the season, as the staff was packing up for the winter. Director Stanley Kubrick changed so many details of the book when turning it into a film that Stephen King hated the end result. Still, it was one of the highest grossing films of 1980.

• The exterior shots of the movie were of Timberline Lodge in Oregon, and the opening shots of the road to the lodge were filmed in Glacier National Park, Montana. All of the interior shots of the hotel were sets.

• Stephen King didn’t like Jack Nicholson in the role of Jack Torrance. Nicholson portrayed his character as crazy from the start, while King’s novel showed how a perfectly normal man went insane.

• King envisioned Wendy as a blond former cheerleader type who never had to deal with any true problems in her life, making her experience all the more terrifying.

He thought Shelley Duvall played the character as a simpering fool, which annoyed him.

• Despite his famous distaste for the film, Stephen King has a cameo: he’s the conductor in the ballroom party scene.

• Stanley Kubrick was brutal on Shelley Duvall during the entire production. He wanted her to be constantly nervous and upset in order to better portray her character. Duvall said it was the hardest job of her entire career.

• Dan Lloyd was five years old when he was cast as the psychic child Danny Torrance. It was his only acting role. He gave up trying to land new parts at the age of 14.

He’s now a biology teacher at a community college. He was told that he was involved in making a drama about a family staying in a hotel and had no idea it was a horror film. He didn’t even see the movie until he was 16.

• In the book, the haunted room is #217 but the owners of the Timberline Lodge asked that Kubrick use room #237 instead, as the hotel actually had a room #217 but not #237.

• Wendy discovers how unhinged her husband is when she flips through the manuscript he’s been working on, only to find 500 pages repeating endlessly “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” This idiom didn’t translate into foreign languages so different sayings were used for different counties.

• For the scene in which Jack breaks down the bathroom door, the props department built a flimsy door.

Nicholson had worked as a volunteer fire marshal and tore it apart far too easily. The props department had to build a stronger door. The scene took three days and required 60 doors.

• Jack Nicholson improvised the most famous line of the movie: “Here’s Johnny!” as he slices through the door with an axe. Because Kubrick was English, he was not familiar with Johnny Carson or “The Tonight Show” so he nearly cut the line.

• The idea for Danny Lloyd to move his finger when talking as Tony was his own. He did it spontaneously during his very first audition.

• The shot of the tennis ball rolling into Danny’s toys took fifty takes to get right.

• The creepy Grady twins were played by British twins Lisa and Louise Burns. They dropped from public view after the film. Lisa grew up to be a lawyer and Louise a scientist. They were ten when they made the movie.

• The scene of Hallorann approaching the hotel in the snow-cat was shot in real snow approaching the Timberline Lodge in Oregon.

• At the end of the film, the crazed Jack chases his son Danny through a snowy maze. The scene required 900 tons of salt and crushed Styrofoam in place of snow.

The scene was so hot that crew members worked in shorts.

• On July 20, 1865, Pierre Lallement, a Frenchman, arrives in the United States carrying the plans and components for the first modern bicycle. Although he built and patented the first bicycle, Lallement received no recognition and failed to acquire enough funds to open a factory.

He sold the rights to the patent in 1868 and moved back to France.

• On July 23, 1888, Raymond Chandler, creator of detective Philip Marlowe, is born in Chicago. During the Depression, Chandler began writing to support himself. He published "The Big Sleep" in 1939, followed by "Farewell My Lovely" and "The Long Goodbye."

• On July 22, 1934, outside Chicago's Biograph Theatre, notorious criminal John Dillinger -- America's "Public Enemy No. 1" -- is killed by federal agents.

In a year-long bank-robbing spree, Dillinger and his associates robbed 11 banks for more than $300,000, broke jail and narrowly escaped capture multiple times, and killed seven police officers and three federal agents.

• On July 26, 1943, Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger is born in Dartford, Kent, England. Michael Philip Jagger attended the London School of Economics but left without graduating in order to pursue a career in music.

• On July 21, 1973, "Soul Makossa" is the first disco record to make the Top 40. It is now best remembered as the source of the rhythmic chant that appears in Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" in 1982.

THE TAY BRIDGE DISASTER

• The Tay Bridge spanned a section of the Tay River estuary between the towns of Dundee and Wormit near the edge of the North Sea in Scotland.

At two miles long, it was considered a marvel of engineering and was the longest in the world at the time.

• Construction began in 1871 under the direction of engineer Tomas Bouch, who had many successful projects under his belt. It took 600 men six years to build the bridge with 20 lives lost along the way.

• Construction of the bridge required 3,700 tons of cast iron, 3,500 tons of wrought iron, 87,000 cubic feet of timber, 15,000 casks of Portland cement, ten million bricks, and over two million rivets.

• Unfortunately, Thomas Bouch was so busy with so many projects that he didn’t spend as much time overseeing the construction of the bridge as he should have. Perhaps because of this, a serious miscommunication occurred.

• The company smelting the iron for the bridge girders put in an order for the “best iron” from the firm that supplied cast-iron ingots. They didn’t know that the firm graded their iron ingots in three levels: “best,” “best best,” and “best best best.” So by ordering the “best iron,” they had unknowingly ordered the cheapest iron available.

• The builders subsequently found that the girders were pitted and pockmarked. They disguised the flaws by filling in the holes using a type of iron spackling made of iron borings, beeswax, rosin, and lamp black, which did nothing to strengthen the girders and were easily dislodged amid the mildest tremors. The inspectors failed to report the issue to authorities even though several cracks appeared in girders before the bridge was open for business. ...continued

• Even on calm days, the bridge would sway four to six inches whenever a train passed over it.

• The bridge rose to its greatest height of 88 feet above the high water line about 200 yards from the southern edge of shore, in order to let ships pass beneath.

• The Tay Bridge was opened for passengers in 1878. Queen Victoria passed over it in 1879 and Thomas Bouch was knighted at Windsor Castle shortly afterwards.

• The bridge only stood for 19 months before disaster struck. On December 28, 1879, a violent storm blew in with strong winds at right angles to the bridge. It was the worst storm in 20 years, with winds gusting over 70 mph. The bridge swayed precariously.

• A small express train traveling from Dundee to Wormit barely made the trip because the bridge was shaking so badly.

• The next train was large and long, full of holiday travelers. It headed out from Wormit at 7:13 in the evening, with an engine, a tender, five passenger cars, and a luggage car. Just as it reached the highest point of the bridge, the 12 highest girders collapsed. The entire train plunged into the water.

• There were no survivors. 75 people died. Only 46 bodies were recovered.

• All the sordid details came out at the inquiries which followed, but blame fell squarely on the shoulders of Thomas Bouch. His sonin-law had been a passenger on the train and died along with all the rest. Bouch died just ten months later at the age of 58, with his reputation as an engineer ruined.

• This tragedy spurred investigation into wind loading and better forms of iron and steel.

• A replacement bridge, completed in 1887, still stands today.
