Listen up! It’s time to “hear” all the facts that Tidbits is presenting about the human ear.

• The average ear measures about 2.5 inches long, with the ear lobe about 0.74 inches long and 0.77 inches wide. Even as an adult, your ear continues to get larger.

• The outer ear, also known as the auricle or pinna, consists of cartilage and skin attached to the outside of the head. Think of it as a megaphone that directs sound into the auditory canal. The outer ear ends at the eardrum, where the middle ear (also called the tympanic cavity) starts. The eardrum, officially known as the tympanic membrane, is less than 0.7 inches in size, and moves less than one billionth of an inch during the hearing process. After sound waves pass through the auditory canal, they reach the eardrum, which vibrates as the waves strike it, much like a drum hit by a drumstick. However, the eardrum is not flat like the head of a drum, but rather is cone-shaped.

• The size of your eardrum won’t change over the course of a lifetime – it’s the same from infancy to adulthood.

• Just past the eardrum lie the body’s three smallest bones, so tiny that all three can be placed together on a penny. They’re also the body’s most fragile bones. As a group, they’re known as “middle ear ossicles,” but individually they are the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup. Each derives its name from the Latin word for its shape – the hammer comes from “malleus,” anvil from “incus,” and stirrup from “stapes.” Together the three a form a bridge to carry the vibrations forward and amplify sounds.

• The hammer is directly behind and connected to the eardrum on one end. The other end forms a hinge with the anvil, and the anvil’s opposite end is fused with the stirrup. The stirrup then connects to the end of the middle ear, and transmits vibrations to the inner ear through what is known as the oval window, which is a network of passages and tubes.

• The innermost part of the ear contains the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ similar to the shape of a snail, about the size of a pea. The fluid of the cochlea holds upwards of 20,000 hair cells, or sensory neurons, which react to the sound waves as they travel through the liquid. The cells then release chemicals and transform the waves into electrical signals that are carried by auditory nerves to the brain. Once these impulses reach the brain’s auditory center, the sound is heard, all in less than the blink of an eye!

• If the hair cells are damaged or destroyed, hearing loss results. Factors in damage include the aging process, excessive exposure to noise, toxic substances, or lack of adequate blood supply.

• Why do your ears pop at high altitudes or in an airplane? That’s because of your Eustachian tube, a tube in the middle ear that links the ear to the nasopharynx, found behind the mouth and nasal cavity. This little tube, just 1.4 inch long and 0.12 in. across, functions to stabilize pressure in the middle ear with outside air pressure. When changes in pressure occur, it may feel like the ears are blocked, and it’s necessary to equalize the pressure by pushing air into the tube, which can be accomplished by swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum. The Eustachian tube is also responsible for draining mucus from the middle ear. Allergies or infections can cause the tube to become swollen, trapping the fluid, which can lead to ear infections.

• Your ears never get a rest! Even when you’re sleeping, ears are picking up sounds. It’s the brain that blocks them out, enabling you to sleep. In deep sleep, the brain tunes out normal noise, although loud noises might jolt you out of it. In lighter stages, the brain processes normal sounds, so you might wake up at the slightest noise.

• Tiny pores within the ear canal produce ear wax, which is really the ear’s method of cleaning and protecting itself. The wax, which has antibacterial qualities, protects the ear canal by keeping it lubricated and blocking pollutants from the inner ear. Tiny hairs in the ear canal are responsible for pushing the wax out. For many people, too much ear wax can press against the eardrum and impair hearing ability, requiring their ears to be cleaned by a medical professional. However, cleaning out ear wax too frequently can actually lead to deafness by damaging the eardrum. ...cont'd

CONTROLLING MOSQUITOES IN URBAN & RURAL AREAS

T

aking the time to learn a little bit about mosquitoes can make for an enjoyable summer. Communities that have comprehensive mosquito control programs benefit substantially by reducing the mosquito population and the risk of West Nile virus. Mosquito control is very expensive. Most small communities can’t afford a comprehensive mosquito program. So, trying to achieve successful mosquito control on a single farmyard or rural home is almost impossible. The cost per household would be too expensive for most. However, by taking a few simple steps, you may be able to reclaim your back yard. Here are four simple steps that will help reduce the mosquito population on your property in both rural and urban areas:

#1: Eliminate Breeding Habitat

#3: Protect Yourself

Mosquitoes can reproduce anyplace that water collects and remains for as little as one week.

By eliminating standing water on your property, you can prevent mosquitoes from reproducing.

Inspect your property weekly for any signs of standing water or water holding containers. If you have a rain barrel used for collecting rainwater, make sure it is completely sealed to prevent mosquitoes from gaining access to the water. If you have a low spot in your yard where water accumulates and remains for several days after a rain, fill it in or consider planting a water tolerant tree or shrub to soak up the water. Develop a property checklist and get your children or grandchildren involved with weekly inspections. Assign the responsibility to the kids. They’ll love it! It also gives them ownership in the success of reducing the mosquito population.

Wear protective clothing to cover exposed skin. Apply an effective insect repellent. The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention recommends repellents that contain DEET. There are several new repellents on the market that go on dry. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, DEET is not recommended for children under 2 months old.

Always follow the label directions when applying insect repellents.

#2: Make Your Property Undesirable for Mosquitoes The first step to making your property undesirable for mosquitoes is to eliminate breeding habitat. Then, learn a little bit about the biology of the mosquitoes in your region. The majority of the mosquitoes in the Grand Forks region are night biters. However, if kicked up during the day in shaded areas, you can expect to be bitten. They generally seek out their blood meals around sunset and may stay active until midnight. Once the temperature starts rising, they head for cover. During hot sunny days, mosquitoes look for cool, shaded, moist, areas to rest. Tall grass, weeds, and shrubbery provide ideal resting places during the day. If the tall grass, weeds, and shrubs are by your backyard deck, then you’ve pretty much invited the mosquitoes to your evening barbeque. By keeping your grass and weeds cut short and shrubbery trimmed, you’ll reduce the resting sites for mosquitoes.

#4: Apply Barrier Treatments Mosquito barrier treatments are products designed to repel or kill mosquitoes on contact.

Many professional mosquito control programs use these products to get instant results in controlling mosquitoes in a selected area.

Permethrin is a common active ingredient in these products. Barrier treatments are residual products, meaning they’ll continue working for an extended amount of time (1-3 weeks).

When applying these products, try to spray areas that remain shaded during the day.

The shaded areas are where the mosquitoes choose to rest during the day. Treating the shaded areas may also extend the effectiveness of the product. The active ingredient in these products break down rapidly from Ultra Violet sunlight. These products can usually be purchased from local retail stores and can be applied by the homeowner. Always read and follow the label directions when working with any chemicals.

Three canals within the inner ear contain fluid that helps you maintain your balance. When you move, the fluid shifts and alerts sensory hair cells that in turn notify the brain of your position. You might experience vertigo as a result of an inner ear infection because of its effect on the fluids.

• Decibels are the units used to measure the intensity of a sound wave. Zero decibels is the quietest sound that a healthy ear can hear. Rustling leaves measure 20 dB, while a whisper is 30 dB. A normal human speaking voice is 60 dB. Alarm clocks register between 65 and 80 dB, and an emergency vehicle siren reaches 115 dB. Because hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the United States, it’s important to protect hearing at all cost. Regular exposure to 110 dB for longer than one minute can cause hearing loss. Sitting close to speakers at a concert registering about 120 dB can damage hearing in as little as 7.5 minutes. Any sound above 140 dB can cause immediate damage. The bad news is there is no repair for hearing damage. Once it’s done, it’s done.

• When a sound exceeds a certain frequency, the ear will ring or buzz. This isn’t the same as the chronic condition known as tinnitus, which produces ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling, and other types of sounds. The sound might be sporadic or constant, and can fluctuate in volume. About 90% of people with tinnitus have experienced noise-induced hearing loss, often due to their occupation. Those who work with loud devices, such as construction workers, landscapers, agricultural and forestry workers, and pilots, all have a higher risk. Repeated listening to loud music is also a major contributor.

• On June 30, 1974, Soviet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov defects from U.S.S.R. after four years of planning. While touring in Canada, Baryshnikov evaded his KGB handlers at the end of a performance, disappearing into the crowd outside. He hid until he was granted political asylum.

• On July 5, 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) announces that all person-to-person transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has ceased. In the previous eight months, the disease had killed 775 people in 29 countries.

The first cases of SARS, caused by the SARS coronavirus, appeared in China in November 2002, and soon spread around the world via air travel.

• For more than 80 years, the Volkswagen Beetle transported people here and there, the longestproduced vehicle in history. In the early 1930s, only one in 50 Germans owned a car, and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler conceived an idea for a cheap, simple car that could be mass-produced for the German people. Hitler chose engineer Ferdinand Porsche to spearhead the project. Although Porsche and his team finalized the design, the original design for the car has since been credited to Bela Barenyi, an 18-year-old Hungarian student who had submitted a chassis design for the Volkswagen in 1925, at least 5 years before Porsche’s initial design. Because Porsche claimed credit for the design and Barenyi’s version was not credited, in 1955, Barenyi sued Volkswagen for copyright infringement and won, and his contribution was finally legally acknowledged.

• In 1938, production of the Beetle began, marketed as the “Volkswagen,” German for “people’s car.” The “New York Times” was the first to refer to the vehicle as the “Beetle” that same year.

• The Beetle convertible went into production in 1949, the same year that VWs were first sold in the United States. It wasn’t a big year in the U.S., with only two cars sold, but by 1955, Volkswagen of America had been formed to regulate sales and service in America. The millionth Beetle was built in 1955, and the car was offered in more than 150 countries worldwide.

• The advertising slogan for the 1969 Beetle was “It’s ugly, but it gets you there.” That year’s Bug sold for $1,799. ...continued

• The Super Beetle was added to the VW lineup in 1971. The suspension system was changed and rack and pinion steering replaced the previous system. The front of the car was 2 inches longer, which allowed the spare tire to lie flat, thus increasing luggage space. The car featured a padded dash, and the former flat windshield was replaced with a curved one.

• For decades, the Ford Model T was history’s most-produced vehicle. In February, 1972, the Beetle broke Ford’s record when the 15,007,034th Beetle rolled off the line. By the following year, more than 16 million Bugs had been produced. It became the first car to sell over 20 million units. The original “first-generation” Beetle ceased production in 2003 after sales of 21,549,464 worldwide.

• The “second-generation” New Beetle was introduced in 1998, combining the old classic arched shape with a newer modern design. The engine moved from the rear to the front, with the luggage compartment in the back for the new models. A flower vase next to the steering wheel was added as a quirky accessory. “Motor Trend” magazine named the New Beetle “Import Car of the Year” for 1999, and sales in the U.S. were 80,000 that year.

• In 2012, the Beetle received another facelift, when the design became sleeker without the trademark rounded top. Although we think of the Beetle as a German car, the new vehicles were actually manufactured in Puebla, Mexico.

It was the end of an era in July of 2019 when the final Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the assembly line. At the time, the CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America said, “There are no immediate plans to replace it. I would also say, ‘Never say never’”.
