In 1953’s “The Joy of Cooking,” Irma Rombauer recommended that the bread and cheese should be heated in a waffle iron.

Popularity was further enhanced by James L. Kraft’s introduction of processed cheese, which lengthened the shelf life of cheese. The Kraft Company introduced Kraft Singles in 1949 • The average grilled sandwich contains about 290 calories. The world record holder gobbled 47 sandwiches in 10 minutes.

UNUSUAL OBSERVANCES (cont):

• Each year on the Monday after Easter, the White House hosts the annual Easter Egg Roll. Over 30,000 children age 13 and under will gather on the South Lawn on April 13 this year to roll colored eggs through the grass with spoons. A threeday online lottery is held in March each year to allow children from across the United States to vie for an opportunity to attend. The event’s history is a long one, beginning in the early 1800s when First Lady Dolley Madison organized a public egg roll on the Capitol lawn. Several presidents held their own informal events, but it wasn’t until 1878 that President Rutherford B. Hayes officially established the tradition. The egg roll was cancelled during World Wars I and II, then suspended during White House renovations. Ronald Reagan initiated the practice of handing out souvenir wooden eggs with the signatures of the president and First Lady imprinted on them, a custom that continues.

• Happy National Pecan Day on April 14! It’s in honor of this nut, which isn’t really a nut at all, but rather a drupe, which is defined as a “fruit with a single stone, surrounded by a husk.” The word “pecan” has its origins in the language of the Algonquin tribe, translating “a nut requiring a stone to crack.” More than 80% of the pecans grown in the world are grown in the United States, with Georgia the top producer, followed

by Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. A pecan tree can grow to be 130 feet tall and produce for up to 300 years. About 70% of the pecan kernel is oil, contributing to the calorie count of 690 for just 3.5 ounces of pecans. Research indicates that eating a handful of pecans every day may lower cholesterol levels. Pecans contain 19 valuable vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, B complex, and E, calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc.

• In addition to April 15’s position as Income Tax Day, it’s also National Rubber Eraser Day! It marks the day in 1770 when Joseph Priestly introduced a vegetable gum that would remove pencil marks. His invention wasn’t made of rubber – he called it that because of the rubbing motion required to eradicate the marks. That same year, an English scientific instrument maker named Edward Nairne began marketing the product, selling cubes of the substance for 3 shillings per half-inch cube. Charles Goodyear developed vulcanization in 1839 and rubber erasers came into use. In 1838, Pennsylvania inventor Hyman Lipman received a patent for a pencil with an eraser at the end. Eraser manufacturers refer to those pencil end erasers as “plugs,” and their little metal holders as “ferrules.” Today’s pink erasers are composed of either a synthetic rubber blended with pumice or of vinyl.

• There are upwards of 25,000 species to celebrate on National Orchid Day on April 16.

Some of these plants can survive up to 100 years! The flowers themselves can survive from just a few hours up to six months, depending on the variety. The flowers have bilateral symmetry, meaning that if a line is drawn vertically down the middle, the two halves are mirror images of each other – much like a human face.

Although orchids produce several million tiny seeds, only a few will actually develop into a plant. Their unique pollination process is based on the fact that the flowers’ reproductive parts strongly resemble the insect that will pollinate them. The insect lands on the flower, mistaking it for a mate, and the pollen sticks to its legs.

Off it flies to look for another mate, often disguised as an orchid!

• National Ford Mustang Day is observed on April 17, marking the day that the car was unveiled

by Henry Ford II at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. Priced at $2,368, first-day sales were 22,000 vehicles. That might not sound like much, but in today’s dollars, that translates into about $19,000. After eight months, 260,000 cars had been sold. By 1966, a million Mustangs had been produced. The 10-millionth Mustang was sold in 2018. There are differing stories as to how the car was named, with one the obvious Mustang horse.

But the more accurate one seems to be naming the car after the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane. The names of Allegro and Avventura were considered before settling on Mustang.

• April 18 has been dubbed National Animal Crackers Day, in honor of those tiny cookies that were introduced in the late 1800s. They were first known as animal biscuits, manufactured in England, and exported to the U.S. where the first batch was baked in 1871 by Stauffer’s Biscuit Company in York, Pennsylvania. Prior to 1902, the crackers were sold in bulk from a barrel, but that year, Nabisco packaged the little treats in a box with pictures resembling a circus train, selling them for 5 cents. A string was added to the box that Christmas, enabling customers to hang it on the Christmas tree. Today, about 8,000 miles worth of string is used every year on the more than 40 million boxes of crackers sold in 17 countries.

• A box of animal crackers contains 22 crackers in a variety of animals, including tigers, cougars, camels, kangaroos, bison, lions, hyenas, zebras, and elephants, among others. There have been different animals used over the years, with the most recent addition of the koala in 2002. Nabisco celebrated the crackers’ 100th anniversary by sponsoring a contest to choose a new animal. The koala beat out the penguin, cobra, and walrus.

• The cast and crew were legally bound not to leak a single word of the plot line. Hitchcock withheld the script from the cast until it was time to shoot each scene. He also decreed that no moviegoer would be admitted into the theater once the showing had started.

• The intense musical score added further suspense to the already-gripping plot. Composed by Bernard Herrmann, the entire score was played by just stringed instruments. The screeching violins, violas, and cellos sawed the same note over and over on the strings during the shower scene, simulating the stabbing. Hitchcock claimed, “33% of the effect of ‘Psycho’ was due to the music.” He was so thrilled with the result he doubled Herrmann’s salary to $35,000.

• The film received four nominations for Academy Awards – Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Black and White Cinematography, and Best Black and White Production Design, but failed to win a single Oscar.

Not for the faint of heart, the classic thriller “Psycho” was released in 1960, and became one of the world’s favorite movies. Follow along as Tidbits studies up on this chilling film.

• Although director Alfred Hitchcock had released many films in Technicolor, he chose to produce this psychological mystery in black and white for effect. It was the story of Phoenix office worker Marion Crane, (played by Janet Leigh) who steals $40,000 from her employer and hits the road for a new life in California. After a long tiring day on the highway, she pulls into the secluded Bates Motel, owned and managed by a quiet and handsome young man, Norman Bates, played by 28-year-old Anthony Perkins. Marion was driving a 1957 Ford sedan, the same car that served as the family car for the Cleaver family in television’s “Leave It To Beaver.”

• Over dinner, Norman tells Marion how he is under the thumb of his domineering mother, who refuses to allow him a life of his own. Later in the evening, Marion is stabbed to death in the shower, now one of the most famous scenes in movie history.

• The shower scene took seven days to shoot, with 77 different camera angles in the 45-second scene.

Hitchcock opted for black-and-white for the film, believing that color would be too gory.

• Hitchcock paid $9,500 for the rights to Robert Bloch’s novel, which was based on the true story of 1950s serial killer Ed Gein, a case that would also inspire “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” In an attempt to keep the film’s ending a secret, Hitchcock reportedly bought as many copies of the book as he could.

• Because the Paramount Pictures studio strongly disliked the screenplay, they allotted Hitchcock a very small budget. • Although there are nearly 1,000 different varieties of bananas, almost all of those available in supermarkets are of the Cavendish banana variety, originally native to Southeast Asia. The scientific name for banana, “musa sapientum,” translates “fruit of the wise men.”

• Bananas don’t grow on trees, but rather on plants that reach a height of 25 feet, planted from bulbs, not seeds. The plant’s leaves can mature to 9 feet long and 2 feet wide. Clusters of the fruit are known as “hands” and each single banana is a “finger,” with each hand yielding 10 to 20 fingers. The roots of a plant can be hundreds of years old.

• The health benefits of bananas are many, beginning with their calorie count. Because 75% of a banana’s weight is water and they contain no fat, a medium banana contains just 100 calories. They’re loaded with potassium, which is good for the heart and helps guard against high blood pressure. They contain Vitamin C, as well as B6, which can aid with good sleep.

Bananas contain high levels of tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is known to contribute to happiness and well-being.

• Bananas are also good for pain relief. Rubbing the inside of a peel on a scrape or burn helps the pain go away, while reducing swelling. The oil on the inside of the peel can also relieve a mosquito bite and help with the itching and inflammation of poison ivy.

• Bananas have been a popular subject of songs, with more songs written about them than any other fruit. “Yes, We Have No Bananas!” was released in 1923 and became a major hit, #1 on the charts for five weeks and selling more than a thousand copies of the sheet music every day. “The Banana Boat Song,” a Jamaican folk song, was recorded by Harry Belafonte in 1957, reaching #5 on the charts and selling more than a million copies. The tune became Belafonte’s signature song.

• The first recorded banana split was served up at Latrobe, Pennsylvania’s Tassel Pharmacy soda fountain in 1904. A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist named David Evans Strickler came up with the invention and charged 10 cents, twice the price of the other ice cream sundaes.
