• The Beatles stepped onto the stage of “The Ed Sullivan Show” on February 16, 1964 for their second appearance on the variety program. Just seven days before, the Fab Four had performed for the first time, watched by some 73 million viewers, and were invited back for an encore.

The group performed six songs on the second show, tuned into by 70 million people in nearly 22.5 million homes. Later in the week, half a ton of Beatles wigs were shipped to the U.S. • On a chilly February 17 in 1876, in the community of Eastport, Maine, sardines were canned for the first time. Julius Wolff was a New York food broker who moved to Maine because of the abundance of sardines, small members of the herring family. Wolff canned the fish in oil, and his success grew into a new sardine factory in nearby Lubec. Within two decades, there were 23 such factories in the town.

• About 800 people gathered in the cold on February 21, 1885 to dedicate the Washington Monument near the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Construction had begun on the monument in 1848, but was halted in 1854 due to a lack of funds when the obelisk was 152 feet high.

The Civil War further delayed the project, and work was not resumed until 1879, after Congress agreed to appropriate $200,000 to carry on. As a result, the bottom 27% of the monument is a slightly different shade of marble than the upper portion. Made of marble, granite, and sandstone, the Washington monument stands just shy of 555 feet tall, and is the world’s tallest obelisk, and Washington, D.C.’s tallest building.

It held the honor of world’s tallest building from its completion until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was completed. For those interested in skipping the elevator ride, there are 893 steps to climb to reach the top of the Washington Monument. ...continued

• How about some Number One songs on the Billboard charts this week in history? In 1971, The Osmonds were at the top with “One Bad Apple.” Linda Ronstadt captured Number One with “You’re No Good” in 1975. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were the leaders for six weeks in 1970 with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and Paul Simon’s solo song “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” was there six years later.

This week in 1980, Queen led with “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and in 1997, it was the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe.”

• Some famous magazines were published for the first time this week in years gone by. “Ladies Home Journal” started up in 1883, and by 1903, it was the first American magazine to have one million subscribers. Although primarily an online publication, it’s still in print today, although available only quarterly on newsstands.

In 1925, the “New Yorker” debuted as a weekly publication focusing primarily on the cultural life of New York City. It’s still on newsstands 47 times a year. “Newsweek” magazine was founded this week in 1933, and is still in print today, although there was a four-year period when it was only available digitally.

• Old-timer baseball fans may remember the name of Joe Nuxhall, one of the stars of the Cincinnati Reds. Joe was the youngest player ever to play in a major league game, age 15 years, 316 days. He signed a contract with the team on February 18, 1944, in the middle of his freshman year at Hamilton, Ohio, high school.

Of course, he had to obtain permission from the school principal to miss school on Opening Day. The left-handed pitcher was a member of the National League All-Star team in 1955 and 1956, and retired from the Reds in 1966.

He continued his team loyalty by broadcasting their games for the next 40 years. ...continued

• World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima began on February 19, 1945, with the U.S. launching its invasion of the Japanese with 30,000 U.S. Marines.

Photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the image of six Marines raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi on February 23, a photo that won the Pulitzer Prize. Tragically, three of those six in the picture were killed in action just days after the flag-raising.

• The popular antacid Alka Seltzer was introduced on February 21, 1931. The medication, a mixture of aspirin, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium citrate, was offered as a source of relief from minor aches, inflammation, fever, headache, heartburn, indigestion, and hangovers, among other symptoms. Alka Seltzer has had several wellknown ads, including a cartoon character known as Speedy, used from 1954 to 1964, “Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz” aired in the 1960s, and the slogan, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing,” was popular during the 1970s and 1980s. Alka Seltzer even had its own radio show in 1932, the Alka Seltzer Comedy Star of Hollywood.”

• In the world of Olympic Games, this was the week that Scott Hamilton captured the gold medal in figure skating in Sarajevo in 1984.

Skater Sonja Henie won three golds in 1928 in St. Moritz, and speed skater Eric Heiden set a record with five gold medals in 1980 in Lake Placid. The first brother combo to win gold and silver in the same event was Phil and Steve Mahre in the slalom in 1984.

• Just over eight years after the ground-breaking flight by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, Frenchman Jules Vedrines made history by making the first flight over 100 mph on February 22, 1912. Vedrines went on to fly clandestine missions during World War I, landing behind enemy lines. Sadly, the 37-year-old was killed in 1919 on a flight from France to Rome.

• Next time you're in Iowa, you might want to stop by the rural town of Riverside, which touts itself as the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk.

Yep, the future birthplace. It seems that "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry asserted that the character of James Tiberius Kirk was born in Iowa, but he didn't specify exactly where. In 1985, the Riverside City Council voted to declare their town the future birthplace of the character, later writing to Roddenberry and receiving his approval. In honor of its newfound claim to fame, the city began hosting an annual Trek Fest, complete with a Spockapalooza battle of the bands.

• The term "bric-a-brac," usually used to refer to a collection of tawdry trinkets, comes from the French, where its original meaning was "at random."

• The famous line “My name is Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump” was not part of the original script. Tom Hanks came up with it spontaneously during the filming of that scene, and the director kept it.

• Remember Forrest’s cross-country run? As he sat on the porch, “for no particular reason,” he decided to go for a “little run” that transitioned into a trek across the U.S. and back. Although Forrest said it lasted 3 years, 2 months, 14 days, and 16 hours, it was just seven minutes of the film. Because Tom Hanks wasn’t a runner, his body double stepped in for him in several shots. That body double was none other than Hanks’ younger brother, Jim. • The music soundtrack from the movie sold 12 million copies, one of the top-selling albums in the U.S. It included songs from several famous musicians including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Three Dog Night, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, and the Doobie Brothers. Six songs from The Doors were on the album, more than any other band.

• Forrest Gump was produced on a budget of $55 million over a four-month period. After 66 days at the box office, it had passed $250 million in ticket sales.

• Can you imagine anyone but Tom Hanks in the title role? The studio’s first choice was John Travolta, but he declined the role. Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were also considered. Robin Wright was awarded the role of Jenny, after the part was rejected by Jodi Foster, Nicole Kidman, and Demi Moore. Tom Hanks took no salary for the film, having asked for a percent of the movie’s overall gross profit instead. This action earned him about $40 million.

• As Forrest waited for the bus on a bench in Savannah, Georgia, he related the story of his life to strangers sharing the bench. He spoke of meeting Elvis Presley when Elvis rented a room at their home, which Forrest’s mother ran as a boarding house. After being named to the AllAmerican college football team, he met President Kennedy at the White House. Following graduation, Forrest enlisted in the Army, where he met “Bubba,” who persuaded him to go into the shrimping business. While in Vietnam, Forest saved several soldiers and was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Lyndon Johnson.

• Forrest’s medal ceremony was taken from actual footage, with Tom Hanks’ head superimposed over that of Sammy L. Davis, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1968 for military valor during a Vietnam battle.

• Forrest met social activist Abbie Hoffman at the 1967 March on the Pentagon rally and musician John Lennon while being interviewed on the Dick Cavett Show. As an expert at ping pong, Forrest played on the U.S. team against China. During the filming of those matches, there was no actual ping-pong ball. Computer graphics were used to ensure that it always hit the paddle.

• Forrest claimed responsibility for discovering the Watergate scandal, resulting in Richard Nixon’s resignation.

• The novel by Winston Groom, from which the film was adapted, also featured Forrest as an astronaut, a professional wrestler, and a world-class chess player.

• The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company was started by Forrest and his former commander Major Dan, who had lost his legs in Vietnam. During the filming of the movie, actor Gary Sinise’s legs were covered with a special blue fabric that enabled the production crew to digitally remove his legs.

• The art of sword swallowing has its origins in India around 2000 B.C. when fakirs and shaman priests who had taken vows of poverty and worship developed it. Similar practices, such as walking on hot coals, handling snakes, and lying on beds of nails, demonstrated their power and connections with their gods.

• The custom spread to Greece and Rome during the first century A.D., and was frequently performed at ancient Roman festivals. Around 750 A.D., the art travelled north into China. In Japan, sword swallowing was included in their acrobatic theater, which incorporated fire eating, tightrope walking, and juggling.

• Sword swallowing isn’t really swallowing at all, but rather passing a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus to the stomach, involving a relaxation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The first step is for the performer to lean the head back, hyper-extending the neck to line up the mouth with esophagus. The throat is then relaxed, with the blade moved through the mouth and pharynx, that part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity. The sword then moves into the flexible esophagus, straightening out the curves, making its way into the stomach.

• Sword swallowing takes a lot of practice, particularly in the areas of overcoming the gag reflex and learning to relax the GI tract. It requires strong concentration, as the sword passes within millimeters of several vital body parts – the aorta, the heart, and lungs. ...continued

• Some swallowers say that eating a big meal or drinking lots of water before a performance gives the stomach a more vertical orientation, making the process easier.

• Sword swallowing was introduced to the United States in the early 1800s, but it didn’t gain widespread recognition until the art was performed at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Ironically, this was the same year that the practice was outlawed in Scandinavia.

• The name Red Stuart is a famous one in this skill. Red has set numerous records, with his greatest of swallowing 52 swords at once, breaking his own previous record of 50. Natasha Veruschka is the record-holder for swallowing the longest sword, accomplished on International Sword Swallowers Day in 2009.

The blade measured 22.83 inches long. Matty Henshaw was busy in 2003 when he set a record for 3,782 swords swallowed that year.

And how about Chris Steele who was the first person to swallow a sword underwater, a feat accomplished in a tank of live sharks!

• Sword swallowing isn’t just about entertainment. Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville has studied the techniques involved in sword swallowing in an effort to help patients suffering from swallowing disorders. In the early days of endoscopy, where the body’s interiors are examined using a scope, doctors worked with sword swallowers because their bodies could adapt to the medical instruments.
