• Helen “Nellie” Taft, during a visit to Tokyo, greatly enjoyed the annual cherry blossom festival. When her husband William Howard Taft became the 27th president in 1908, she was determined not only to beautify the White House, but also to improve the city as well. Cherry blossoms were just what she needed. Unfortunately, a search of every nursery in the U.S. turned up only 100 or so saplings. Undaunted, Mrs. Taft contacted the mayor of Tokyo, who graciously donated 3,000 saplings. However, when they arrived they were found to be infected with an agricultural pest and were destroyed. When the Tokyo mayor heard, he joked about George Washington being the first president to set an example of destroying cherry trees— then he sent a new shipment. Today, Nellie Taft's city improvement program is still enjoyed by millions of people.

• Nellie Taft was the first First Lady to ride in her husband’s inauguration parade; the first to publish her memoirs; the first to own and drive a car; the first to support women’s suffrage; the first to smoke cigarettes; and the first to fight for federal safety standards in the workplace.

• Eleanor championed civil rights causes while she was First Lady. She attended the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Alabama in 1939. When she found that the audience was segregated, with blacks on one side and whites on the other, she protested by putting her chair into the center aisle that separated the races.

• Soon after Eleanor arrived in the White House, she hired a professional cook to spend a few days teaching her staff how to prepare special dishes.

One day, Eleanor's German shepherd rushed up and bit the cook on the ankle. Eleanor, running in to find out what the commotion was about, declared, "That settles it! From now on, we will have iodine kept in this room!"

• Lady Bird was unsuccessful in her attempts to get LBJ to lose weight. One night she was awakened by the sound of clinking metal, and discovered it was coming from the kitchen, where she caught LBJ red-handed with a metal spoon and a bowl of pudding. The next day, LBJ instructed an aide to go buy him a wooden spoon.

• In 1964, Lady Bird was travelling from Cleveland to Washington, DC. Her secretary called ahead to a Howard Johnson's restaurant to make reservations for Mrs. Johnson. After they left, a reporter interviewed the waitress. "How did it feel to serve Mrs. Johnson?" "I was pretty nervous," replied the waitress. "Have you ever met a First Lady before?" inquired the reporter.

West Nile Virus Identified in Grand Forks!

Grand Forks Health Department has identified West Nile Virus (WNV) in the region. WNV is a serious disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Most people infected with this disease will have no symptoms or mild symptoms but this is a serious disease and can be fatal. The Grand Forks Public Health Department urges citizens to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The type of mosquito most common for transmitting WNV is present in our area and is most active from dusk until dawn.

Please take the necessary measures to avoid mosquito bites.

How do people get infected with WNV? Most people get infected with WNV by an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals. In a very small number of cases, West Nile virus has been spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.

Can I get West Nile virus directly from birds?

West Nile virus is found in all 48 contiguous states (not in Alaska and Hawaii) and the virus circulates in mosquitoes and birds every year. Because West Nile virus is well established, some states and local jurisdictions are no longer collecting dead birds for testing. Instead, they have chosen to shift staff and funding resources away from testing of dead birds to other areas of West Nile virus surveillance and control.

• When she was a young child, Betty Ford once came home from school crying because she had been teased about a birthmark on her arm. Her mother explained to her that she was the only little girl in the entire world who had a mark just like that, and so she was very special and unique. She went back the next day with her head held high.

• Betty Ford inspired both rage and admiration when she was interviewed on "60 Minutes" in 1975. Among the things she said were that she supported the Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion; she didn't favor premarital sex but felt it might lower the divorce rate; that she might have tried marijuana if she had been a member of that generation; and that if she found out her daughter was having an affair, she wouldn't condone it but neither would she throw her daughter out of the house. Preachers and editors across the country condemned her for her views, but others praised her honesty and open-mindedness.

NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE When George Washington died, he stipulated that in his will that the 123 slaves he owned should serve his wife Martha until she died, at which point they were all to be set free. Following his death, Martha feared that one of the slaves would murder her so they could all go free. Only a year after George died, she set all the slaves free.

• When Warren Harding began courting Florence Kling, her father disapproved because he was of a lower social standing. Warren was the editor of the local paper at the time. When they married in 1891, Florence's father boycotted the wedding and refused to speak to his daughter for the next seven years. It was 15 years before he ever set foot in his son-in-law's house, even though they lived in the same town. Presumably he changed his mind when Warren was elected 29th president in 1921.

SEQUOIA

• The giant sequoia is the largest tree in the world in volume. It’s a member of the cypress family, along with the redwood tree. Whereas the sequoias are the largest trees by volume, the redwoods are the tallest trees by height.

• A sequoia called the General Sherman is the largest tree in the world, with an estimated volume of 52,508 cubic feet in its trunk alone. It was named in 1879 in honor of the Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman.

• Located in Sequoia National Park in California, the General Sherman is not only the largest living tree, but is also one of the largest living organisms on the planet. At around 2,300 years old, it weighs 2.7 million pounds, is 275 feet tall, and has a 102-foot circumference at the ground. It has branches that are almost 7 feet in diameter.

• The General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, is the second largest tree by volume with 46,608 cubic feet. The third largest tree by volume is the President in Sequoia National Park. Researchers estimate that this tree has a whopping two billion leaves. The President is estimated to be 3,240 years old, give or take a few decades, and stands 274 feet tall, which is 31 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty, but 105 feet shorter than the tallest tree in the world, a coastal redwood called the Hyperion Tree.

• Giant sequoias are the third longest-lived tree species, with the oldest known sequoia based on ring count being 3,200 years old. The only older trees are bristlecone pines, with the oldest one being nearly 5,000 years old, and Alerce trees of the Andes that can live over 3,500 years.

• The bark of a sequoia is commonly two to three feet thick, acting as insulation during fires and protecting against insects and fungus.

• The wood of the sequoia is very brittle so it is not a valuable lumber species. In spite of this, it was nevertheless extensively logged around the turn of the 20th century. When a sequoia was felled in 1853, it was found to be 1,244 years old. The stump was so large it was used as a dance floor. The wood was so fragile it could be used only for thing such as shingles, fence posts, or matchsticks, and was therefore worth very little. Once Sequoia National Park was established, tourism offered a bigger economic boost than logging.

• The trunk of the General Sherman tree could theoretically be turned into almost 120 miles of standard sized lumber planks. A branch that fell from the tree in 1978 had a diameter greater than six feet and was at least 140 feet long, meaning this single branch was larger than any tree in the United States east of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges.

• In prehistoric times, the sequoia was found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, but today it’s found only in about 75 scattered groves throughout Northern California. Giant sequoias have extremely exacting climate requirements, so specific that they grow naturally only in a narrow 260-mile strip of mixed conifer forest on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, primarily between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation.

• Many people walking around the base of giant sequoias can cause them harm, because it compacts the soil around their shallow roots and prevents the trees from getting enough water.

• Though there is a story commonly told that the sequoia was named after a Cherokee Indian who invented an alphabet, there is little proof behind the myth. More likely it sprang from the Latin “sequi” (meaning “to follow” as in “sequence”) referring to the sequential number of seeds in the pine cones.

The Luxurious Life of Stephen Curry If Stephen Curry never scores another point for Golden State, he'll still be worth every penny of the "supermax" contract he signed with the Warriors on the first day of free agency.

The deal, which will pay Curry $201 million over the next five seasons, is the largest in NBA history. When you judge Curry's performance over the past few years — three NBA Finals and two championships, record-setting regular seasons and playoff runs — it's clear that he is well worth the risk going ahead. But if you're Warriors owner Joe Lacob, you can look back to how much you've made to know he's worth the investment.

When Lacob bought the team, the Warriors were worth $450 million. Today, they're worth $2.6 billion. That's an astounding return on investment. Ludicrous, even. So ludicrous, it has NBA players actually criticizing the Curry deal as being too small.

Lebron James was the first to speak out on the deal on Twitter because he is the King and as we all know, Twitter is the communication medium of choice for kings and presidents in today's world.

James feels that Curry was worth double, and it's hard to argue the fact. What team owner wouldn't want to see their team's value increase four or five times over?

The NBA has a collective bargaining agreement and a salary cap, designed to control costs and increase ownership's profits. It works by calculating a percentage of the league's revenue from the previous season. It allows for teams to pay over the calculation to a degree, but then the team is charged a luxury tax. For this coming season, the salary cap was set at $99 million and the luxury tax was at $119 million. That's the formula that was used to pay Curry. James -- and every other player in the league -- feels that market factors should prevail.

The NBA players association will be renegotiating the bargaining agreement next year, and James himself will be a part of the team of negotiators. If the past is any barometer, I wouldn't expect ownership to budge. Owners seem to like profits, and they have shown a willingness in the past to lock out players, endure strikes and still get their way when all's said and done.

Maybe this time, things will be different. Maybe the luxury tax will have a higher ceiling, and guys like Lebron James can collect hundreds of millions more for bouncing a ball up and down a court. At the end of the day, it's always good to remember one thing: It could be worse ... you could be playing for the New York Knicks.

• Around the year 1776, the Cherokee daughter of a chief named Wu-Teh and a white trader from Virginia named Nathaniel Gist had a baby boy in the area around what is now Tennessee. They named the boy Sequoyah and he grew up to become an accomplished hunter. However, an accident rendered him lame, so he turned his attention to more sedentary pursuits. He married a Cherokee woman, had children, and became an accomplished silversmith and a talented blacksmith.

• When he served as a soldier during the War of 1812, he noted that the soldiers around him were able to read letters from home, write to their sweethearts, follow written military orders, exchange news, and read books, all by using the white man’s system of “talking leaves.” He thought that the Cherokee nation was at a great disadvantage because they had no written language. After learning to speak and write several languages, he started thinking about his native tongue, Cherokee.

• Over the course of several years, he broke down the phonetic sounds of the Cherokee language into 86 parts, and assigned them 86 symbols, creating a very simple alphabet for a language that was previously only spoken. He borrowed and modified symbols and letters from various languages, as well as making up his own. He taught his six-yearold daughter this alphabet in less than a week.

• For his trouble, his town council accused him of witchcraft. He was taken to trial, where he explained that the marks on the paper represented words of the Cherokee language.
