• There are many species of fireflies, and each one flashes its lights in a particular pattern in order to attract mates of their own species.

One type of firefly called Photuris is called “femme fatale fireflies” because the female will expertly mimic the flashing pattern of other species in order to lure a potential mate, whom she then devours.

• Often a flock of birds will post one bird as a sentry to keep a lookout for predators as the rest of the flock feeds. Birds bring the sentry tasty morsels in order to reward it for its work. Some sentry birds give a false alarm when no predator is evident just at the exact same moment it’s seen a juicy morsel another bird has found. The birds drop what they’re doing upon hearing the warning cry, and the sentry swoops in to claim the treat.

• Capuchin monkeys practice the same deceit: when the monkey acting as a lookout sees another monkey finding something yummy, it gives the call warning of attack. The monkey promptly scampers up a tree, giving the lookout the opportunity to snatch the tasty morsel for himself.

• One type of octopus is an expert imitator. Called the mimic octopus, it can configure its body position and adjust its coloring to look exactly like other animals or to blend into the background. It uses this talent to get closer to its prey, and also to avoid being prey. By imitating a female crab, it can get close enough to a male crab to grab it and eat it. When approached by a carnivorous damselfish, it can mimic a banded sea snake, which preys upon damselfish.

• Australia is home to a remarkable bird called the lyrebird. The male of this species attracts mates by fanning his tail feathers while singing a courtship song. Lyrebirds are excellent mimics and can repeat the calls of other birds perfectly. Females seem to be attracted to the male lyrebirds that have the most complicated songs, so the males incorporate trills, warbles, various bird calls, and even the sounds of babies crying, jackhammers pounding, chain saws, car alarms, barking dogs, car horns, and other sounds of human settlements.

• There’s a plant in Australia called the casuarina. Its seeds are small and fleshy, rich in oils and nutrients. Harvester ants love to collect the seeds, store them in their underground larders, and eat them once they have sprouted. Also living in Australia is a type of stick insect. A female walking stick lays eggs that just happen to look identical to casuarina seeds. She drops them randomly on the ground underneath the casuarina tree where she lives. Ants come along and collect her eggs along with the casuarina seeds, carrying them back to their storage unit. When the eggs hatch, the baby walking stick looks exactly like a newly hatched ant. The walking stick simply walks out of the ant nest and climbs the nearest casuarina tree to start the cycle all over again. ...continued

• The male digger bee is always on the lookout for a female digger bee. Occasionally when the male digger bee finds a female, it turns out not to be a female digger bee at all. Instead, it’s actually a collection of hundreds of tiny blister beetle larva, who have gathered together and formed themselves into an exact replica of a female digger bee. When the male digger bee arrives looking for a romantic encounter, the tiny blister beetle larvae jump onto the body of the bee. The confused bee then flies away, looking for a real female. When he finds a female, the blister beetle larvae have just enough time to abandon the male digger bee and transfer to the female. When she’s done mating, she flies to her underground nest where she has filled cells with pollen in order to feed her offspring. While she is laying eggs, the blister beetles move into her larder, where they feast on pollen and grow into adults.

• Cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in another bird’s nest. But the cuckoo finch of Africa has perfected this subterfuge. When it lays its eggs in another bird’s next, the eggs look exactly like the real eggs of the host bird. When the host returns, she can see that there are imposter eggs in the nest, but she is unable to tell which are her eggs and which are the imposters. She ends up hatching all the eggs, but because the cuckoo eggs hatch earlier than her own eggs, the cuckoo chicks eat the majority of the food she brings back.

• Bats home in on their prey by using echolocation, which is a series of rapid clicks that bounce back to the bat’s ears and indicate the location of prey. But the Grote’s tiger moth outwits bats by producing clicks of its own that jam the bat’s receiver, confusing it for the precious seconds needed for the moth to drop like a stone to the forest floor.

• The appropriately named bird-dropping spider uses its clever disguise as camouflage. No one is going pay attention to a pile of bird poop. Other insects wander by the pile of apparent bird poop, which promptly pounces on them and eats them.

• Birds generally avoid eating ants because they taste bad. One species of treehopper bugs living in Central America carries around an extra flap of tissue on its back that looks exactly like an ant. Any bird looking down upon the treehopper would see nothing but an ant. Underneath the ant-like decoration, the treehopper looks just like other ordinary treehoppers, safely protected by its disguise.

• One type of lizard found in Borneo has flaps of skin that act like glider wings, allowing it to fall in a controlled manner from the tops of trees to the next tree over. These gliding lizards are expertly camouflaged so that they look exactly like dead leaves falling from the treetops.

• One type of spider found in Taiwan builds a lifesize model of itself in order to act as a decoy.

• The yellow-rumped thornbill is an Australian bird whose nests are often raided by a bird called the currawong. Currawongs always attack from above, dropping down on a thornbill nest in order to feast on the eggs. The defense strategy of the thornbill is to build a two-tiered nest: the top floor is a decoy nest, which contains no eggs.

The bottom floor, hidden from the currawong’s view, is the real nest where the eggs are safe.

Mosquito Surveillance - Why Trap Mosquitoes?

The Grand Forks Health Department maintains an active mosquito surveillance program. The more we know about mosquitoes, the better equipped we are to control them. Our surveillance program is responsible for collecting, identifying, and conducting West Nile virus tests on mosquitoes. Traps are distributed throughout the community and the Information gained from these traps include: Mosquito Population – Knowing the population helps us determine if it’s necessary to conduct citywide mosquito spraying. This information also enables us to measure the effectiveness of the mosquito spraying operations.

Species of Mosquitoes – There’s around 43 different species of mosquitoes in North Dakota. Some of these mosquitoes are just annoying pests, but one of them, the Culex tarsalis, is the most common mosquito for transmitting West Nile virus in North Dakota. This mosquito is prevalent in the Grand Forks region. Monitoring and testing the Culex tarsalis mosquito is important because it may enable us to respond to an elevated threat of West Nile virus before it infects the human population. This component of mosquito control is very important in reducing the risk of mosquito-borne disease in our community.

Mosquito Activity – Knowing what times the mosquitoes are active is important for getting the best results from our spray operation. We use ultra-low volume sprayers that deliver very small droplets and only 1 ounce of a diluted, non-residual insecticide per acre. Because we’re using such a small amount of insecticide, timing is critical to be successful.

This insecticide must directly impact mosquitoes, generally while in flight to be effective. Rotator traps are used to monitor the times the mosquitoes are most active.

Gender Identification – Knowing the sex of the mosquito can be helpful in predicting a new hatch. Male mosquitoes hatch out before females.

Therefore, if we see a spike in the number of male mosquitoes collected in our traps, we know there’s the potential for an increase of females soon to follow. That data is helpful in preparing us for a citywide spray.

It’s a short warning to get ready.

Traps used in mosquito surveillance programs are not successful in reducing mosquito populations. They are simply a surveillance tool used to collect data about the mosquitoes in our community.

The Best Story Isn't Always on the Field I once had the sincere pleasure of going to a Kansas City Chiefs game with a funeral director and a graphic artist. Both made for interesting company.

As per norm, I chose the absolute worst way to get to Arrowhead Stadium, so our tailgating time was limited.

The graphic artist made "scalloped potatoes" in a smart-looking red and gold Corningware chafing dish, and I had spent the night barbecuing ribs in my oven to go with the KC strips we were going to sizzle on the hibachi. I presume to recollect that the funeral director brought the beer ... Boulevard Pale Ale, if I'm not mistaken.

To make up for lost time, I asked one of the Chiefs' tailgaters for some white-hot charcoal (you can do that, you know) and was quickly obliged.

What they say about Chiefs fans is very true: They're among the best tailgaters on the planet. The combination of their raw materials (the Kansas City area is where all the meat orchards are), their sauces (tomato-based, sweet and peppery), technique and attitude are truly world class. If you've never been to a Chiefs game and you're a diehard sports fan, add it to your list of things to see and do before you die ... trust me, you will not be disappointed.

As a sportswriter, sometimes it's hard to go to a game and just enjoy it for what it's worth. You're running a commentary in your mind. You're thinking about possible "plays of the game" and the player of the game.

You're thinking about the hook and the takeaways from the performances on the field.

On that day, not so much. I was thinking about Frank DeFord, probably the greatest sportswriter who ever lived, or, to run with the theme, the Kansas City BBQ of sportswriters. He would have seen the story I was seeing, because sometimes the best story wasn't on the field, and he is the man who taught me that.

I can't even recall who the Chiefs were playing that day (which makes me think they were probably playing the Rams, because nobody cares about the Rams), but I can recall a moment where we finally had to ask: Just what the heck is a scalloped potato? What does that even mean? And are there potatoed scallops?

There were 60,000 people in that parking lot, and I can guarantee you ... we were the only ones noshing on thinly sliced Russet potatoes that had been softened in heavy cream and drizzled with Stilton cheese on a $180 plate.

The game was already an afterthought.

On the ride home, I took an even more calamitous route through the interior of town.

The funeral director, with alarming ease, pointed out every single funeral home along the way, referring to it excitedly as the "legacy business" at one point. I must have driven through that part of town a million times, and never once did I really stop and think about the funeral homes dotting the route.

Today, as I write this, I mourn the passing of a friend, Frank Deford. Thanks to National Public Radio, Sports Illustrated and every other outlet this prolific journalist worked for, his legacy will remain a constant in our lives. If you've never heard of the man, check out his work -- he was a Chief in his time, and made for interesting company. Trust me when I say that you will not be disappointed.

If it’s all over, apply to your whole hand and slip on either a pair of cotton gloves or a pair of cotton socks if you don’t have gloves. Leave on overnight, or as long as you can stand it! Do this for at least a week. It should make a big difference.
