FABRIC OF SPACE COLLECTION Designed by Suzanne Tick for Luum Textiles

Launched in May 2022, Fabric of Space is a collection of five textiles by Suzanne Tick that draws inspiration from the ever-expanding universe — intersecting the matrices of time, matter, and energy to weave the world around us. Using new techniques, these textiles embody the vivid colors and patterns of the stars, the vibrational qualities of sound and light, and the geological layers of Earth. Renewable and recycled fibers, paired with cutting-edge weaving and coating techniques, produce multi-layered materiality for any contemporary interior. With its multidimensional networks of layers and patterns, Fabric of Space mirrors the structural building blocks of our universe — awakening us more fully to our place in the world. Together, we experience the expansive choreography of the galaxy with Emergent, the patterns of star trails in Formwork, the frequency and sensory impact of sound waves through Spectral Array, and the rooted layers of earth of Welded and Graviton.

7

EMERGENT Equal parts wool-blend and cotton, Emergent combines renewable and recycled yarns into a new hybrid material. Using a needle punch process, Emergent’s highly unique and tactile surface is created when color contrasting boucle cotton loops emerge through the surface of the smooth and heathered wool-blend face. With its all over texture and no visible pattern repeat, Emergent’s speckled surface is reminiscent of the abundance of stars in the night sky. Emergent upholsters beautifully on the curves of furniture and comes in 11 color combinations ranging from vivid to classic, allowing for a variety of applications.

9

FORMWORK Star trails and constellations in the night sky informed Formwork’s pattern, a unique take on a classic jacquard twill, carefully designed with a subtle, organic pattern within its linear weave structure. A scientific approach to color created the structural iridescence seen in Formwork’s 12 colorways, activating the pattern at all angles and enhancing the form of furniture for upholstery, wrapped walls, panels and screens. With its bleach cleanable and partially recycled polyester fibers, Formwork maintains the ideal performance characteristics for the flexible spaces of today.

11

SPECTRAL ARRAY As we adjust to new environments, ways of communicating and listening, mental health plays a pivotal part in our emotional experience in a space. Spectral Array’s multi-color, large scale pattern nods directly to this phenomenon, taking inspiration from spectrograms; diagrams that map the amplitude of light and sound waves emitted during a physical event, such as the firing of neurons in the brain. Spectral Array’s generous pattern envelops the user in organic, colorful movement and opens the possibilities for large expanses of color and pattern on furniture. Independent moments of chenille and slub yarns collage together creating a greater whole, bringing a balance of energy and calmness to a space. Spectral Array comes in 8 distinctive colorways, is bleach cleanable and has high-UV indoor lightfast performance.

13

WELDED Welded upholstery brings the art of woven textiles to coated form using a new fusing technology. Like the Earth’s core and crust, Welded is multi-layered: colorwork was developed from scratch and polyester fibers were woven into a ground cloth to create a color-and-weave effect, a technique where alternating light and dark or contrasting colors of yarns work together to achieve a dimensional effect. The ground cloth is then coated with a clear thermoplastic elastomer, or TPE. Welded’s coating behaves as a clear barrier, making it ink and stain resistant, wipeable, bleach cleanable and highly upholsterable for high traffic areas such as hospitality, healthcare, education and workplace.

GRAVITON Graviton, a textural multipurpose textile comprised of 100% cationic and disperse recycled polyester, achieves a new and differentiated surface thanks to its innovative fiber and yarn spinning technology. Recycled cationic and disperse components are tacked together at longer than usual intervals, allowing the yarn to roll and twist on itself in the warp and weft when woven into greige goods. Once cross dyed, the darker cationic and lighter disperse components seem to appear and disappear at random in the weave structure, an interaction which creates a chunky, variegated surface. Graviton is suitable for use on upholstery, wrapped walls, panels and screens and comes in 16 colors.

SHARED GROUND COLLECTION Designed by Suzanne Tick for Luum Textiles

In the Shared Ground collection, sustainability and modern craft converge to reveal our similar traditions and shared responsibility to each other and the Earth. This collection of four textiles by Suzanne Tick is inspired by the origins of textile making, reinterpreting heritage weave structures and foundational fibers spanning many centuries and cultures. Emphasizing recycled and renewable fibers with Melange Check and Wool Fleck and multipurpose-use applications with Complect and Cult Classic, Shared Ground’s textiles literally share common grounds, borrowing motifs from one other during development on the Tick Studio handloom. Classic plaid, plain weave and twill weaves are realized in wool and wool-like materials, facilitating reconnection to our roots, providing an essential need for our time.

PROCESS TO PRODUCT IN 10 STEPS

Designed by Suzanne Tick for Luum Textiles Launched in February 2022, coordinates Wool Fleck and Melange Check’s yarns contain 100% recycled wool, polyester and acrylic fiber. Bales of discarded apparel and post consumer textile waste are sorted by color and fiber type, shredded to the fiber level, blended and then spun back into yarns. Each yarn hue is artfully created using a variety of individual colors to achieve a melange effect. Check out Luum’s YouTube channel to watch a short video describing Tick Studio’s approach to woven design. Each design starts with weaving hand woven prototypes on a loom. These structures are then manifested into commercially tested products for the Architecture and Design industry. Wool Fleck and Melange Check were woven at a European woman-owned mill engrained in a long tradition of fiber recycling.

THE OBSCURA COLLECTION Designed by Suzanne Tick for Skyline Design

The Obscura collection—from the Latin word for a darkened enclosure— is an innovative PVC-free polyester film system for use on new and existing architectural glass, plexiglass and steel surfaces. Applied in horizontal bands, Obscura provides privacy in incremental dimensions at various heights in a range of refined, tinted neutrals. Obscura offers an elegant design solution for minimal and specific coverage with two patterns, Horizon and Perspective, that will satisfy building codes which increasingly require glass with markings, particularly in healthcare and corporate environments. Strengthening the qualities of natural light with quiet ombres and pattern breaks, Suzanne Tick captures fleeting visual moments and translates them for specific uses, shaping the user experience for a variety of settings. The result is both airy and spatial, providing privacy when needed in a sustainable, cost effective approach. On view at Skyline Design, suite 1040 at theMART: 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago, IL 60654.

HORIZON Horizon employs a subtle ombre that builds into a fused, distinct horizon line; anchoring the viewer while the ombre works to obscure specific areas behind it.

PERSPECTIVE Perspective depicts a strong horizontal ombre pattern with a vertical negative-space linear motif running across its width, amplifying the viewer’s sense of natural light refraction.
