Workforce Demand Dominates CEO Roundtable Conversations

by David Schaffert, Thurston County Chamber President/CEO Since February, I have convened roundtable conversations with area business leaders representing businesses ranging in size from two or three-person shops to 200 plus employees. The purpose of the meetings was to understand current business needs and how the Chamber could support them. Subjects ranged from innovation during COVID-19 to stress and demands on business models. A pronounced issue in all the meetings was that attracting and retaining a workforce is the highest need.

Discussing employment needs is not new, but the consistent, repetitive nature was, and the challenge echoed across a diverse set of industry sectors. One CEO espoused, “I just can’t seem to get the response to job openings that I received before COVID-19,” or another tried to understand if those who were unemployed were interested in returning to a job.

There are many factors, but to start with, our total workforce in the state has decreased by over 100,000 workers, so the pool has shrunk. There is also less immediacy for people receiving unemployment benefits to look for jobs as there are no job search requirements by the state to receive benefits.

Then there are the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. We told everyone to stay away from each other for the last year, so the inclination or desire to get back into the workforce might take time. Additionally, those who were initially displaced and have chosen a new opportunity may have education and skill attainment that takes time before they are ready to start anew.

So, what does this mean for employers?

Prior to joining the SF Fed in 2008, she worked in affordable housing development and management consulting. Laura serves on the board of the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development. Business is Booming for Lacey’s Newest 3D Printing Service, C2 3D Manufacturing

When the global economy slowed to a crawl last spring, the repercussions were immense. Many industries reconsidered how they do business, leading to innovations that will outlast the pandemic. In Lacey, one father/son team saw the potential to fulfill new and emerging needs using skills they already had. Their company, C2 3D Manufacturing, has grown rapidly in the past year and is poised for further expansion.

CEO Jesse Cote Jr. has spent 30 years in advanced manufacturing and aerospace while his son Cary, the treasurer, is a certified aircraft mechanic. Despite their training, getting to understand 3-D printing has been a learning curve. “We probably picked it up quicker than most folks because of our backgrounds, but we didn’t know a whole lot going in,” says Cote. “Now that we’ve been working with different engineering software, materials and temperatures, we’re picking up speed pretty quickly.”

For now, the business operates with seven 3-D printing machines in what Cote refers to as ‘GarageMahal.’ Within the next year, they plan to double that number and add a laser etching machine. Already, the company is serving nationwide clientele through their Etsy shop.

One of their most popular items is a personalized Yeti style tumbler. “We do thurstonchamber.com

“That’s probably our top seller.” During the pandemic, they also began manufacturing ‘ear savers’ that latch onto the string or elastic part of face masks. Before long, the company was producing 100's of ear savers and handing them out at local hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Making a difference is clearly a priority.

One of Cote’s friends is an IT professional whose wife has cerebral palsy and can’t speak.

an in-kind donation. “She can use the paddle with her head,” says Cote. “The dots and dashes translate into a voice. It's evolving very quickly.”

Another project currently underway will provide seeing-impaired people with travel chess sets that have raised and lowered boards, along with square and round-based pieces to differentiate between sides. Cote is also developing dual-language business cards with Braille on one side and traditional type-set on the other.

“It’s a cool way to help folks out, and there’s a huge need for it,” he explains.

“We didn’t realize it until we started reaching out to people and they began getting back to us. More products are evolving now because of the uniqueness of 3D printing. It’s so easy to engineer or program something and have it workable in a matter of an hour or 90 minutes.”

As they’ve grown, C2 3D has connected with other startups in the region, providing nozzles for a company that developed a washing system for boat trailers. “It’s a startup manufacturer in Thurston County,” says Cote. “You’ll be seeing a lot more of other types of manufacturing in the region because that’s where we set up camp.”

Their development process is intentionally eco-friendly, producing far less scrap than other types of manufacturing. Some of the material is a sugarcane-based plastic which decomposes, unlike regular plastic. “In the beginning when we were putting the company together, the idea was to not take away from the earth so much,” says Cote. “We use a solar panel array to generate power.” They’re also proud to be a majority-owned Latino company.

Both Cote and his son are still working full-time at their regular jobs but anticipate that will change within the next few years. “We’re getting more commercial and sole-source contracts,” he says. “We believe business is going to explode once we get our website and online store up and running.”

Port of Olympia Makes Progress on Community Vision

On April 16, 2021, the Chamber’s Business and Economic Development Committee received a presentation from Sam Gibboney, Executive Director for the Port of Olympia, where she provided a status report on Vision 2050.

Vision 2050 results from a 14-month community engagement process to identify community aspirations for the Port to achieve.

The vision contains three primary focus areas: Port Terminal, Waterfront and Community Assets; Business Development, Infrastructure and Real Estate; and Sustainability, Administration, Communications and Engagement.

The Focus areas reflect major community input threads, and within the three focus areas, the community Task Force identified ten goals and proposed 59 specific actions.

The Port reports it has completed or has action in progress for 38 out of the 59 actions. This is a tremendous achievement for the Port of Olympia in a short, COVID-19 – constrained amount of time.

The Thurston Chamber is particularly supportive of five specific actions currently in progress. These actions have broad potential to support and sustain economic development across the region.

These include: • Adding amenities and access to water along the (Port terminal) peninsula • Enhancing the connection between Swantown (marina) and the core downtown (Olympia) area • Growing manufacturing, logistics, avionics, real estate, tourism, agriculture, food processing and storage. thurstonchamber.com

Evaluating and pursuing green-energy production alternatives Exploring options for making the airport an aeronautical research and manufacturing hub

A couple of action items have not started that the Thurston Chamber has an interest in. We hope that the Port and Port Commission will begin working on the following Vision 2050 actions: • • •

Pursue value-added manufacturing opportunities at the Port terminal Develop a community recreation, open-space and placemaking strategy Explore the viability of expanding to five Port Commissioners

The Thurston Chamber of Commerce looks forward to future updates and progress reports from the Port of Olympia. As stated in the Vision 2050 document, “Successful visioning projects require follow-through,” and the Chamber is encouraged by the initial effort. And more follow-through is required from Port commissioners, staff and partners.

“Expand Port partnerships with other community organizations” is the one action item that must be addressed for the Port to successfully realize the community’s aspirations. The Thurston Chamber of Commerce will continue to work and partner with the Port of Olympia as we have done for decades. We encourage our members to do the same. After all, “growing a prosperous economy and vibrant community by connecting people, ideas and resources” is what the Chamber does.

Lauren Rogers was a child living in Southern California when she discovered her love of turning butter, sugar and flour into cakes, pies and cookies. Her grandmother lived nearby, and while it was initially the pool in her backyard that fueled Lauren’s desire to visit, the impetus quickly became time in the kitchen with her grandma, learning to bake.

Lauren has been the owner of Gotti Sweets since late 2018. She was running several departments, including wedding cake operations, at an 80-person bakery in Portland when she interviewed Arthur Gottlieb for a job there. Arthur was looking to relocate from Olympia, and shared that he and his family owned a bakery there that they were looking to sell. Lauren loved her job at the big bakery, but an opportunity 12 I

presented itself at just the right time; that bakery is no longer in business.

With financial help from her beloved grandmother, Lauren was able to purchase Gotti Sweets. Gotti’s has always been synonymous with elaborate specialty cake designs, and Lauren has held up that tradition with gusto. Whether it’s a fun, colorful cake for a child’s birthday or an

elegant three-tiered masterpiece for a wedding, Lauren’s specialty cake designs are a sight to behold and her true passion.

“Everything I do is really fresh,” Lauren says.

order cakes to bake the cupcakes we sell out of the case,” Lauren explains. “You’ll never eat a cupcake that tastes like it’s been in the freezer at my shop.”

These days, Lauren and her assistant baker, Roger Garrett, produce anywhere between 15 and 30 cakes for a given weekend. Their work often includes producing cakes pro bono for organizations like Icing Smiles, a nonprofit that provides special cakes and treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.

2020 was a particularly challenging year. On top of pivoting for the pandemic, Lauren and Roger had to navigate white supremacist rallies in close proximity to the shop, white supremacist stickers and vandalism and even the spray painting of a shop neighbor’s SUV with a vulgar racial slur. “I held off on stepping into that arena as a business for a while, but the killing of George Floyd, and all the things I’ve experienced as a business owner in the aftermath, changed that,” Lauren explains.

She painted a Black Lives Matter mural on a wall in her shop and has become more vocal about her experiences as the owner of Gotti Sweets.

Earth Day’s Thurston Green Business Awards

Keynoted by Shina Wysocki of Chelsea Farms and Honors Four Green Businesses of the Year

Close to 100 businesses applied for a Thurston Green designation this year, and the community celebrated them at the Chamber's April Forum on Thursday, April 22 on the virtual platform REMO. The virtual event included a keynote address by Shina Wysocki, an owner of Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar and Vice President of Chelsea Farms. Wysocki shared the story of growing Chelsea Farms. In 2016, Shina and Kyle Wysocki opened Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar. The oyster bar has quickly grown to be a landmark for farm-to-table eating in downtown Olympia. Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar stands as an ambassador to locals and visitors about shellfish farming, sustainable practices and a working waterfront.
