The bleacher system construction utilizes a 36” O.C. wood framing system with all vertical surfaces in painted & lacquered SDF (Sustainable Design Fiberboard), while the horizontal surfaces are Corian, a recyclable material with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) which is certified by the GREENGUARD® Environmental Institute.

FIXED BLEACHER UNIT

The bleachers themselves are organized in a horseshoe shape with circulation paths that cut through the primary mass, allowing access to the formed collective space from the desktop work stations, each of these located along the two perimeter walls with clerestory windows in quad configurations. The volumetric bleacher “Booleans” are shifted elsewhere in plan and formally reference where they were originally located. The bleacher system geometry is based on a modular system, similar to the Fibonacci series and works anthropomorphically with idealized, repetitive seating heights.

A formal negotiation between the overall geometric configuration of the bleacher system and its singularities, which include tapered geometries and stepped divisions (from one seat to two). The geometry intentionally contracts and expands where the overall bleacher system geometries from new angles for sight line optimization. This direct reflection of the “parts to the whole” helps unite the distributed furniture elements wether a fixed bleacher unit, moveable bleacher unit, credenza, or shelf. All CNC milled geometries are 1-degree.

The patterning is based on symmetrical topological lines that contract and expand to marry with the underlying dia-grid - there is continuous modulation along the length of each spline where each individual line within each panel meets up exactly with its neighbor at every panel edge. The flowing geometry provides lines of movement for the eye to follow along. CNC milled geometries are 1 and 3-degree.

PATTERN PROPAGATION

The patterning is generated from a Python script with each quadrant of the diamond tufted area (patch or panel) including four unique profiles reminiscent of grass clusters. Direct references to the stylized, repeatable geometries found in ancient Chinese painting techniques are represented within each cluster, as the individual blades of grass in profile intentionally overlap with each other -- similar to each cluster’s overlap with every other cluster. “Grass cluster” in Chinese is mang, in English, tussock. CNC milled geometries are 1 and 3-degree.

The balloon frame, or trabeated construction option employs multiple small scale dimensional lumber members to form the overall bleacher system primary structure. These elements doubly function as horizontal supports for the Corian benches and lateral braces for every independent bleacher system volume. The dimensional lumber frames tie into 22 differentiated pre-cut vertical plywood sheet profiles, which act as the secondary structure. Lastly, the entire structural system is enclosed in vertical SDF facing panels on each side of the bleacher volumes (not depicted), including a lower perimeter inverted kick-board area that runs around the lower perimeter for each volume.

The radial fin, or waffle construction option employs 40 vertical plywood sheet profiles at approximately 16 inch on center intervals, to form the overall bleacher system primary structure. Each of these has a unique profile shape, designed to receive a limited number of standardized dimensional lumber cross ties. The vertical plywood fins are doubled at each bench intersection and at the ends of each bleacher system volume, to provide a larger surface area for the secondary dimensional lumber bench supports. The lineal connections work in tandem with the Corian benches as lateral bracing for the entire structure and this structural option reduces the total number of dimensional lumber pieces from 240 to 208, while also doing away with any SDF face panels, thereby lessening the overall material and labor related costs.
