I am pleased to report that we have a plethora of applicants from a broad spectrum of the local community for this year’s intake. It continues to be vital that we engage and encourage more young people into agriculture; there is a great future for our industry and as we approach 150 years of trading it will continue to be a rewarding one.

The recent Showcase events have been very well attended.

The new Massey Ferguson 5, 6, 7 and 8S series tractors were the stars of the Massey Ferguson day. During the Fendt/Valtra event both the new Fendt 728 and the all new Valtra Q series also created quite a stir. We now have a lot of demonstrations planned for the coming season and beyond. It’s going to be a busy time!

I can report that SymAgri, the Trimble Precision Guidance & Agricultural solutions provider continues to increase its network of users. We now cover a large swathe of the UK, offering industry leading technology, combined with ingenious data management solutions. LAMMA and CropTec SymAgri had a very successful visit to Croptec show. This was the first time we have visited a trade show so we didn’t know what to expect going into it. However, the foot fall during the event was good and we managed to obtain a good number of enquiries off the back of the show.

As a result of the success of the recent Croptec show, we decided to take the step and attend Lamma 2023. We were pleased to see customers and talk to professionals on a national scale. Being at a national show, it shows the intent for SymAgri we attempt to build the business. Myself and the team would like to think as we grow, we will become the go-to supplier for precision technology.

Guidance for Guidance Event We recently hosted a Guidance for Guidance systems event at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford for training and practical advice for users. Experts from Trimble, Sencrop and Omnia joined our event to support the training sessions as well as our fantastic team of engineers holding one-on-one sessions.

As a result of the raffle that we had during the event, we managed to raise £247.00 with all proceeds going to YANA. YANA provides Rural confidential support & counselling, as well as investing in Mental Health First Aid training and suicide prevention. For more information visit yanahelp.org.

Fendt MT1167 Makes Tracks

Fieldwork at G’s Norfolk Farms’ Wissington site presents an unusual challenge for a high horsepower tractor.

The largest cropping areas are 520 hectares of Romaine lettuce and 150ha of celery drilled and harvested through most of the year, followed by break crops, including 300ha of wheat, all grown on black fen soil.

It is a diverse rotation which also includes onions, potatoes for packing and sugar beet, which goes ‘next door’ to British Sugar’s Wissington factory.

General manager Martin Hammond says: “The aim is to keep the soil covered as much as possible. While salads take priority – including 70ha of Chinese cabbage, which is shallow-rooted and needs careful production – we have to establish crops after potatoes and sugar beet.”

“We are looking at lower disturbance cultivations, but currently have to plough after every crop of lettuce.”

The 1,400ha of land is ringfenced and bordered by the Wissey and New Cut rivers, with the packhouse at its centre, providing facilities to take crops from the field to customer depots via vacuum cooler, cold store and fridge lorry.

Fields, which average 7ha, are enclosed by hedges to counter erosion and watercourses – some 50 miles in total.

At the end of 2021, Fendt’s MT 1167 tracklayer replaced a Challenger 845E, which had 9,000 hours on the clock.

Operator Paul Lloyd says: “We were ready to change, but needed to stick with a tracklayer to work on the fen.”

The 673hp MT 1167 is deployed for cultivations tasks, including pulling a nine-furrow Gregoire Besson plough and press, an Agrisem disc combination and a range of subsoilers up to an 8m TWB model used for shallow work.

It is also used for land levelling with a laser-guided scraper.

Mr Lloyd says: “We saw it on demo and bought the demonstrator, which had about 250 hours on it, and we have since put almost 2,000 hours on the clock.”

“It is not difficult land compared to some of the heavier soils this type of tractor might work on, but it does plenty of work.”

Mr Lloyd says: “It is very effective and the gap between the fan and the engine has reduced the noise levels significantly. I have had a lot of Challengers over the years and this makes the Fendt a lot more pleasant to drive.”

Mr Hammond says: “It is very good in changing conditions as it works to select the correct gear ratio for the engine revs.

“We are impressed with the combination of the latest engine technology and the Vario Drive.

Even though it is more powerful than the Challenger, it is more economical – we are saving about one-third on fuel.”

A new track system benefits from a suspended chassis, which Mr Lloyd says makes for a more comfortable ride on the road, while the longer tracks give more grip and a smoother ride in the field.

The business has added Trimble GPS rather than using the terminal for guidance, in order to work alongside Trimble-based software for surveying, on a 42m Agrifac self-propelled sprayer, for a 6m power harrow and three specialist salad-planter systems.

A longer route to market also looks to have ironed out many of the teething problems usually seen on new machines and Mr Lloyd reports no issues, apart from a couple of oil leaks which were quickly sorted by dealer TNS. The Challenger has been a hard act to follow and, while this business possibly does not punish machinery in the way some heavy land farms will, it will be interesting to see how the MT 1167 fulfils the legacy over time.

Thurlow Nunn Standen Awarded Kverneland Spare Parts Excellence and Service Excellence Awards

W

e are proud to announce that our Service and Parts teams have been awarded the Kverneland Spare Parts Excellence Award and Service Excellence Award for 2022 at the Kverneland Out of Season Conference earlier this week. The Service Excellence Award for 2022 was awarded to the TNS Atleborough branch. The award was based on various criteria, including their efforts to ensure that service inspections were carried out within timescales, reporting issues in a professional manner, offering assistance and training with ISOBUS technology, and making good use of online tools such as Quest, Topservice, and the Simulator. The TNS team's proactive approach with pre-season inspections also helped to minimize in-season issues with spreaders and precision drills. Andrew Balls, Technician, and Adrian Brown, Aftersales Director, accepted the award on behalf of the TNS Atleborough Service team.

In addition, the Spare Parts Excellence Award for 2022 was awarded to the TNS group. Kevin Waddingham, Kverneland Parts Manager, presented the award based on several criteria, including increased sales of Kverneland genuine parts, a proactive approach and excellent communication with customers using a multi-channel approach. Ant Barrow, TNS Group Parts Manager, proudly accepted the award.

Before joining TNS, I worked as a technician for an AGCO dealership and as a sales representative for one of the largest agricultural and groundcare equipment dealerships in the Midlands. Outside of work, I am a new dad and enjoy spending most of my spare time with my 7-month-old son. In addition, I also have a passion for dog training.

David’s new role will be to spearhead the development of our Manitou business. David has a wealth of experience within the industrial and construction industry.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with and avidly supporting his two boys football teams, and taking his unhinged 7 month old Golden Doodle Willow for long walks. When he is not doing that he is out on his bike, in the gym or binge watching documentaries and films on Netflix. In the interest of upholding his support for local business, he has also been known to frequent the village pub.

Updates from SID In December 2022 our Specialist Installation Division (SID) were asked by a Cambridgeshire farming business if there was still time to construct a 2,000 tonne bulk grain store with drying facilities for the 2023 harvest. Having vast experience in delivering such projects SID confirmed that whilst there was little time to loose they would be up for the challenge, following a competitive design and tendering process SID where pleased to be awarded the contract.

What followed should have been a straight forward process to obtain Permitted Development approval from the local planning authority, however as is often the case, this proved to be challenging and permission was eventually obtained four weeks behind program. Despite the delay, SID had been able to engage early with their reliable team of contractors to ensure all design work was in place to enable work to start on site in earnest as soon as permission was granted. The site was quickly stripped and hard-cored, drainage & foundations constructed, and last week as can be seen in the photo, the steel frame was erected to bring the works back onto the original timeline.

As with many of SID’s projects, they have been commissioned to provide a ‘turn-key’ project which includes complete project design, planning permission, groundworks, steel frame, concrete walling, roof & wall cladding, floor slabs, crop drying & ventilations installations, doors, electrical installation, drainage and external aprons. In this instance the crop drying system is complimented with a grain stirrer, with the crop stored at 4m level fill this allows the use of a high temperature drying system utilizing lower volumes of air at high temperature to heat the grain stack before stirring and driving the moisture away with the aid of the extraction fans.
