Welcome to THT’s battery application newsletter for September 2016

IBC IBC Improvements and revisions have been made to the Isothermal Battery Calorimeter (IBC) models by Calarus Corporation in the United States. The IBC now features on-instrument display of power, heat and temperature control status.

The IBC-CC model for coin cells now has a sample and reference chamber in order to improve instrument sensitivity. The IBC software is on its third iteration with a streamlined user interface. Calibration and analysis functions are now built into the software for greater ease-of-use.

All IBC models have been through aesthetic changes; the green case has now been replaced by a pale-grey design to match the existing THT instrument colours. The IBC-PL in particular has a new contoured case with illuminated power indicator, on-instrument display and moulded ergonomic handles on the lid.

ARC ARC Pressure Canisters THT manufacture a range of different sizes of steel pressure canister which can be used inside the ARC for measurement of pressure and gas collection on batteries of different sizes.

The canisters offered by THT are as follows: • 400ml for coin cell or AA. • 1200ml for 18650 • 4000ml for smaller pouch cells or 26650 • 20000ml large format for automotive cells as used in the EV and EV+ calorimeters

ARC Battery Papers Sandia National Labs have published a comprehensive research paper on the effect of battery size on severity of thermal runaway.

Sandia have four ES-ARC systems and are one of the most prolific publishers of ARC-based battery research in the world. The Battery Show 2016 THT will exhibit at The Battery Show in Novi, Michigan, USA from 13th to 15th of September.

All canisters are available with a range of ports and optional sealed copper-bar connectors through the canister lid for easy in-situ charging and discharging.

Larger canisters feature a built-in replaceable burst disk to avoid damage from excessive pressure.

Electronic Lifting Unit The large EV, EV+ and BPC calorimeters available from THT can accommodate large format cells, but this makes them more difficult to handle during test setup. To make this process easier, THT announce the Electronic Lifting Unit (ELU). This is a motorised system for lifting or raising the calorimeter lid automatically. The ELU hardware allows existing EV+ systems to be upgraded with this option without significant re-cabling.

Plug Volt ARC Presentation

On 30th November there will be an online presentation on ARC battery testing by THT. The presentation is titled Determination of Battery Safety and Performance Parameters using Adiabatic Calorimetry. Registration for this presentation is free. It will be presented through PlugVolt (plugvolt.com). The presentation is an hour long and will cover technical aspects of using the ARC to assist with battery safety and efficiency evaluation.
