India is a growing market, to support users and prospects, we recently ran a series of workshops in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. Speakers, Danny Montgomery, THT UK and Dr M. Surianarayanan, CSIR-CLRI Chennai, offered their experience in the field of calorimetry and hazard analysis through a series of seminars focusing on thermal safety assessment, screening, adiabatic simulation and scale up.

All three workshops were well attended by process engineers and development chemists from all over India.

ARC Overcoming Reflux Issues Reflux is where a liquid reaches it's boiling temperature in one area of a closed system and then the resulting gas condenses at a cooler part of the system. This cycle is repeated. The problem with this in the ARC is that when the gas condenses (normally in the feed through tube) it drips back into the bomb lowering the temperature of the rest of the sample. This can lead to negative drift or temperature stalling.

IPA has a boiling point of 82.6°C. As can be seen in Fig.1, past this temperature there is negative drift and the temperature of the sample will not increase further. This occurs using a 1/8" stem standard through tube.

All bombs come with colour coded caps designating the bomb material, enabling users to quickly distinguish them.

Stainless Steel

Using a 1/16" stem through tube reduces the volume of gas/vapour that can condense and thereby inhibits reflux. The benefit of using a 1/16" stem through tube is shown below. No negative drift is present.

Ending Guaranteed Support - Older ARC Systems THT will aim to continue to assist all users of all ARC’s. However THT now formally notify all users of the ‘legacy ARC™ systems’ shown below that support is no longer guaranteed.

CSI ARC systems

µRC Hydrogenation at elevated pressure THT have been developing a µRC method to measure hydrogenation enthalpy.

Hydrogenation is much faster and effective when the pressure of the hydrogen atmosphere is increased. The protocol requires modification of the stainless steel sample vials to allow hydrogen at 30bar to be released simultaneously into both the same and reference vial. The hydrogenation of octene with Pd/C (5%) catalyst was chosen to test the method.

THT ‘EuroARC’ 1998-2006

THT will no longer offer a ‘trade-in’ value for any such ARC system shown above. However THT will continue to offer ‘upgrade’ for older ARC systems. Read our full statement here

Good agreement with literature was found using different masses of octane, making µRC an effective tool for exploring kinetics and determining the reaction enthalpies of these processes. Read more in our technical application note.

µRC Pressure transducer upgrade For those users demanding higher resolution, low end pressure measurement, THT offer an upgrade to the standard µRC 500 psi (34 bar) pressure transducer. The manufacture specifies accuracy as +1% of full scale. In our tests we recorded a 10 fold improvement with the 100 psi (7bar) transducer. Contact THT for more information and pricing.

RSD The RSD continues to be the Screening Safety Calorimeter of choice around the world where there is routine and QC needs. The RSD combines quality safety calorimetry, lower costs, easy to use, rapid data acquisition and simple data analysis.
