ARC IR Camera THT is working to develop an integrated IR camera which could replace the standard optical camera that is supplied with the EV+ calorimeter. The optical camera provides video of the device under test in the calorimeter, and can help to identify points at which for example a battery will vent gas, or the “hazard level” (from battery testing standards) associated with the battery at different temperatures.

The IR camera would replace the optical camera and could be used to determine the special temperature distribution on the surface of the battery.

In cycling tests this could help determine the areas of significant heat generation (the tabs for example). During safety testing the IR camera could identify the hottest points on the cell during a thermal runaway, the temperature of venting gas and remove the need to outfit the surface of the cell with many different thermocouples.

The IR camera will be retro-attachable to existing EV+ system and can be purchased as an upgrade or with new systems. The ESARC software must be updated to accept the camera system. THT anticipates the system will be available in Q1 of 2018 Latest Papers The group at Tsinghua University have recently published data from overcharge tests under adiabatic conditions using the EV-ARC

The paper entitled “An electrochemicalthermal coupled overcharge-to-thermalrunaway model for lithium ion battery” presents an electrochemical-thermal coupled overcharge-to-thermal-runaway (TR) model.

Used to predict the highly interactive electrochemical and thermal behaviours of lithium ion battery under the overcharge conditions.

In this model, the battery voltage equals the difference between the cathode potential and the anode potential, whereas the temperature is predicted by modelling the combined heat generations, including joule heat, thermal runaway reactions and internal short circuit.

The IR camera requires an IR transparent window made of sodium chloride to replace the standard borosilicate window for the optical camera. Replacing the window is an easy process which the user can carry out themselves.

The model can fit well with the adiabatic overcharge tests results at 0.33C, 0.5C and 1C, indicating a good capture of the overcharge-to-TR mechanism. The modelling analysis based on the validated model helps to quantify the heat generation rates of each heat sources during the overcharge-to-TR process.

ARC The result shows that increasing the oxidation potential of the electrolyte, and increasing the onset temperature of thermal runaway are the two effective ways to improve the overcharge performance of lithium ion battery.

The presentation is an hour long and will cover two main types of calorimetry which can be used to carry out safety and performance testing on batteries.

Isothermal calorimeters allow for direct heat measurement on cells during use, while adiabatic calorimeters can measure heat released from batteries during thermal runaway.
