THT Newsletter Chemical Applications Latest developments at THT As of 29th May, Judges Scientific plc, acquired Thermal Hazard Technology Ltd and THT Inc. Judges Scientific are a UK-based group listed on the AIM London Stock Exchange. The company now have a portfolio of 18 scientific instrument businesses with products sold worldwide to a diverse range of markets including: higher education institutions, the scientific communities, manufacturers and regulatory authorities.

Geoff will be our Managing Director. The remaining directors; Phill O’Kane, Stelios Mores and Stephen Ottaway will continue at THT. Everyone at THT is excited about the further opportunities for growth within the Judges Scientific family. You can contact your THT representative on their usual email address or info@thtuk.com.

New Spares Website - Coming soon

Following the acquisition Martyn Ottaway will retire but stay on the board as a non-executive director to help smooth the transition with our new owners. Judges have recognised the need for an interim manager with a hands-on approach to aid this process. Thus, we would like to introduce you to Geoff Spink. In July we plan to launch an updated web store. The new fresh look will provide better access to purchase of ARC test cells. Selections can be made by material, wall thickness (light or heavy), clip position and outer stem diameter (quarter or eight inch). The site will also offer common spares and consumables for ARC, RSD and ÂľRC. Existing users will have to reregister once the new site is launched.

COVID-19 In-line with local government advice THT is open for business. Office-based staff are working from home where possible. For our production and lab-based teams, actions have been taken to reduce risks of exposure in the workplace.

THT Newsletter Chemical Applications The virus had an impact on our sales and installations. Installations will take place as travel restrictions permit. Some countries / organisations will allow visitors from overseas to perform installations under special guidelines permitting entry for specialist technical skilled workers. Conferences & Exhibitions The restrictions on travel and social distancing measures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have had a severe effect on the number of conference and exhibitions we can attend in 2020. Our online meeting calendar will be updated as new dates are confirmed. Webinars We are increasing our online webinar programme. The next webinar on 9th July will focus on the µRC Micro Reaction Calorimeter and it’s applications for the chemical & pharmaceutical industry . See our website for more details and to register your interest.

Using a 1/16" stem through tube reduces the volume of gas/vapour that can condense and thereby inhibits reflux. The benefit of using a 1/16" stem through tube is shown in Fig.2 below. No negative drift is present.

ARC Overcoming Reflux Issues Reflux is where a liquid reaches it's boiling temperature in one area of a closed system and then the resulting gas condenses at a cooler part of the system. The problem with this in the ARC is that when the gas condenses (normally in the feed through tube) it drips back into the bomb lowering the temperature of the rest of the sample. This can lead to negative drift or temperature stalling. IPA has a boiling point of 82.6°C. As can be seen in Fig.1, past this temperature there is negative drift and the temperature of the sample will not increase further. This occurs using a 1/8" stem standard through tube.

Side branch tubes are available with 1/4” bomb connections and with wither 1/18 or 1/16 stem exit side branch tubes.

THT Newsletter Chemical Applications ARC Rapid Data Collection System (RDCS) For users demanding increased data collection speeds, an upgrade option for new and existing esARC systems is now available. The unit enhances the data collection rate capability of the esARC allowing data points to be collected at up to 3072 per channel per second (4 x temperature and 1 x pressure measurements), which is equivalent to 15,360 measurements per second. The hardware comprises of Electronic controller / data logger Labview based interface for test setup and data acquisition 3000psi pressure transducer (customer specified range also available) 4 x thermocouple inputs with N-type thermocouples All necessary cabling System controller (notebook PC Intel Processor, Windows 10)

µRC µRC - Available options THT offer a range of options to extend functionality of the micro reaction calorimeter. These are available to both new and existing users. The pressure option (PO) integrates a pressure transducer and is designed to work with the supplied Stainless Steel Pressure Cells. 1/16” tubing and connectors can monitor pressure build up during a test. Alternatively connection to an appropriate gas cylinder can create an overpressure during measurement. The Pressure Cells are rated to 10bar. Standard uRC Metal Cells are constructed from 316 Stainless Steel, for those wanting improved chemical resistance to reagents such as Hydrochloric Acid we offer Hastelloy cells. The Integrated Pressure Titration Tower (IPTT) works in the same way as the standard uRC titration tower, but has a separate pressure line running through the tower body. Glass vials with a screw cap rubber septa lid are used to hold the sample. The pressure line and dosing line pass through the PTFE septa in the lid of the vial. The pressure line connects to the

Latest papers Since our last newsletter several papers have been published citing use of the THT ARC. Corteva, the agrochemical division of Dow, have released an open source article in which the esARC has been to investigate thermal stability of sodium hydrate solvent mixtures.

The system can cope with pressures up to 4-5 bar. Use the Hydrogenation option (HD) to measure the enthalpy change that occurs during catalytic hydrogenation. The option simultaneously delivers gas to both sample and reference vials via a needle/ball valve assembly.

ARC, RSD, µRC The Gas Flow Option adds a Mass Flow Controller and support frame to allow regulation and switching of up to two gases. Flow is typically at ambient pressure, elevated pressure is possible using the back pressure regulator. Successful studies of amines for carbon capture have been made utilising this option.

Delivering solid to liquid is achieved with the Solid Dosing Option (SDO). At the chosen time point, the plunger is manually depressed dosing the solid sample contained in the delivery tube. Disposable Syringe Option (DSO) allows manual injection with 1mL disposable syringes. The syringe is housed in a modified shunt to aid temperature equilibration within the calorimeter. See our website for technical information sheets on all our µRC options
