News In the THT UK lab, Vittorio will leave us at the end of July to undertake a PhD. Replacing Vittorio is, Ian Hutchins, who has just graduated from the University of East Anglia with a masters degree in chemistry (1st class). Ian’s work will focus on supporting our Commercial Sample Testing Service which is available for all THT instruments.

New ARC & RSD users: Lianhe Technology In June Danny Montgomery and Harry Li installed an ARC and RSD in Lianhe Technology, situated in Taizhou City, China. The equipment will be used for process safety evaluation. Lianhetech is a chemical manufacturer specializing in pharmaceutical products.

News A gathering of our world wide distributors took place recently at our UK Headquarters. Representatives from Algeria, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the USA were in attendance. Presentations, training sessions with our product managers, and information on new product development were provided. With their up to date knowledge, our distributor network look forward to the opportunity to build on their partnerships with you.

Among the additional features is a tool to allow basic vent sizing using standard ARC data. With input of appropriate and good-quality ARC data, as well as knowledge of the physical parameters of the system, some preliminary vent sizing calculations can be varied out. This is without the need of dedicated vent-sizing calorimeters or optional modules.

ARC New Analysis Software For several years, THT has worked with Cheminform St. Petersburg (www.cisp.spb.ru) who develop analysis software for calorimetric data (and other related software). CISP offer a kinetic analysis package which can handle data from the THT Micro Reaction Calorimeter. This software allows more complex and in-depth analysis compared to the standard THT analysis software.

The latest software package from CISP which is compatible with the THT Accelerating Rate Calorimeter is called ADAExpert. ADAExpert includes the same analysis functions already present in THT’s own ARC analysis package, ARCCal+, but goes several steps further.

µRC New µRC pressurised dosing option –Integrated Pressure Titration Tower In response to market demand THT have developed a modified dosing tower for the µRC which allows temperature-equilibrated dosing from a standard glass syringe with simultaneous pressure measurement.

The IPTT works in the same way as the standard uRC titration tower, but has a separate pressure line running through the tower body. Glass vials with a crimped lid are used to hold the sample. The pressure line and dosing line pass through the PTFE speta in the lid of the vial. The pressure line connects to the µRC pressure transducer at the other end.

The calorimeter features automated motorized cell switching to mitigate the effects of baseline drift.

This allows for excellent stability without the use of a large temperature controlled water bath. This in turn means the instrument’s footprint is much smaller (only 20cm x 30cm), and thermal stability is achieved more quickly after changing temperature.

The system can cope with pressures up to 5 bar.

The basic model has two sample channels paired with two reference channels. Operating temperature is between 15°C above ambient to 100°C. An option cooling module is available for sub-ambient operation.

For easy operation, a touch screen interface on the top of the calorimeter is used to control the cell position for sample loading. The display also reports the temperature, heat flow and power applied to the heater.

All other control and data logging is achieved with the windows-based software that can be run from a laptop or desktop PC.

Ultra-Stable Isothermal Calorimeter Calarus Corporation and Thermal Hazard Technology have developed a new isothermal heat flow calorimeter to fulfil the requirements of the UN STANAG tests storage life of explosives. The calorimeter can also be used in other applications requiring a high level of sensitivity in heat detection over extended periods of time.
