A LETTER FROM THE CEO

As we move through 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible momentum we’ve experienced at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Our commitment to care continues to drive everything we do—from expanding services to honoring our exceptional team and giving back to our community.

This spring, we celebrated our annual Employee Awards Banquet, a tradition that always reminds me how fortunate we are to have such dedicated individuals serving our patients. We proudly recognized our four Physician of Excellence honorees for 2024 : Dr. Andrew Davies, Dr. Fidencio Davalos, Dr. Richard Roe IV and Dr. Clifford Courville, along with over 60 employees celebrating milestone anniversaries, from five to 35 years of service. Each of them plays a vital role in fulfilling our mission and delivering compassionate care.

We also took time to recognize the incredible physicians on our medical staff during Doctors’ Day at the end of March. Their dedication, knowledge and compassion are the foundation of the care we provide, and we are truly grateful for the work they do every day.

Our support for the next generation of healthcare professionals remains strong. The Mac Burns Golf Tournament in April was once again a success, raising over $28,000 in support of our scholarship program for local high school seniors pursuing careers in healthcare. The remaining funds will support equipment purchases and improvements that directly benefit patient care through the WCCH Foundation.

We’re thrilled to highlight some recent staff achievements. Heather LaBauve, our Breast Health Navigator, earned national certification as a Breast Health Clinical Navigator through the NCBC, deepening her ability to support patients through their cancer journeys.

Megan Gallien, a pediatric physical therapist, became the first provider in our region certified in Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) Therapy, thanks to the B&G Hope Grant.

Megan Majors, manager of Dynamic Dimensions Moss Bluff, achieved Cancer Exercise Training Specialist certification, enabling her to design personalized programs that help cancer survivors regain strength and confidence.

Finally, we’re looking ahead with excitement to the grand opening of our newly renovated Pulmonary Clinic, which will be located at 921 First Avenue in Sulphur. This move represents our continued investment in creating modern, comfortable spaces for our patients and providers.

At WCCH, our purpose is clear—to improve the health and well-being of our community. I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished together in the first months of 2025, and I’m even more excited for what lies ahead.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in WCCH.

Sincerely,

Robert N. “Bob” Davidson | Ellis Hassien | Robert "Bobby" LeTard

PUTTING YOUR HEART FIRST

West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital has expanded services at its Community Health Center to include cardiology care. The new cardiology services encompass both preventive care and the management of existing heart conditions. Patients now have convenient access to routine screenings, diagnostic testing and personalized treatment plans—all within a familiar, community-focused setting.

“Many heart conditions develop silently and can go unnoticed until they become serious,” says Dr. Corey Foster, cardiologist on staff with the Community Health Center. “By ensuring cardiology care is accessible to everyone in our community, we can identify and address these issues early, improving outcomes and quality of life for our patients.”

The Community Health Center of WCCH is open to all patients – including those with Medicaid, Medicare, insurance and those without insurance. The Center is located at 703 Cypress Street, Suite A, in Sulphur, behind the main hospital.

DELIVERING MORE THAN BABIES: Personalized Maternity Care at WCCH

Choosing where to give birth is one of the most important decisions an expectant mother makes.

At WCCH, each birth is treated as a unique experience. From the moment a mother walks through the door, she is supported by a dedicated team committed to providing individualized care that meets her preferences and needs.

“Our goal is to create a calm, supportive environment where moms feel heard and cared for,” says Jessica Buxton, RN, Labor & Delivery Nurse Manager at the Women’s Center of WCCH. “Whether you’re planning a traditional delivery, are choosing pain management options or are scheduled for a C-section, we tailor care to what’s best for you and your baby.”

The Sallye Jean Toniette, MD, Women’s Center has provided maternity services for over six decades, offering a personalized approach to maternity services to ensure expectant mothers receive the support and medical attention they need throughout their pregnancy and childbirth journey.

The Women’s Center features modern labor, delivery and recovery rooms designed to provide comfort and privacy. Buxton explains that these “mother-baby” suites allow families to stay together from birth, promoting immediate bonding between parents and their newborns. For infants requiring specialized care, the facility is equipped with a Level II nursery and neonatologists on staff for babies who may need additional medical attention after birth.

Upon arrival for delivery, each expectant mother is partnered with a specially trained obstetrical nurse who’ll care for them through their delivery. All services are contained within one unit, which means that the same experienced nurse will likely care for both mom and her baby throughout their stay. This ensures continuity of care and improved communication between the mother, her doctor, her family and WCCH Women’s Center staff.

WCCH offers a range of educational programs to prepare families for childbirth and parenting. “We believe in empowering families with knowledge and support throughout their pregnancy, through delivery and postpartum recovery,” says Christa O’Neal, RN, Maternal Child Educator. “We want to ensure that parents are well-informed and confident as they welcome their new addition.”

Classes offered through the Women’s Center include childbirth education programs, prenatal nutrition, development of a birth plan, sibling support, newborn care, breastfeeding and postpartum care.

Expectant families are invited to tour the Women’s Center and experience the welcoming environment firsthand. Schedule a tour by calling (337) 527-4706.

The Women’s Center at WCCH has once again earned the Louisiana Birth Ready Designation for 2025, awarded by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (LaPQC). This recognition marks another year of WCCH’s steadfast commitment to providing high-quality, equitable maternity care for the families of Southwest Louisiana.

The Birth Ready Designation is awarded to hospitals that implement evidencebased practices and quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving birth outcomes for mothers and babies. Developed through the LaPQC, this designation requires hospitals to meet rigorous criteria in five areas, including clinical readiness, staff training, patient partnership, data monitoring and efforts to reduce maternal health disparities.

Probiotics, Prebiotics & “Psychobiotics”

Fostering a healthy gut with a healthy microbiome can lead to better health and moods. The gut-brain connection happens via the “gut-brain axis.” This axis includes several complex interactions that directly and indirectly link the gut and the brain. It allows for communication in both directions—from the gut to the brain, and vice versa.

There is a growing area of research about nutritional psychiatry—the links between what we eat and how we feel mentally and emotionally. Many studies show the strength of this food-mood connection. For example, eating a highquality, nutritious diet nourishes the brain, helps keep inflammation down and helps us enjoy more stable moods. Plus, many chronic gut conditions are often accompanied by mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Some other key benefits of a healthy gut include:

• Helping to digest food and promote gut health

• Producing essential nutrients

• Improving the immune system

• Improving moods and mental health

• Reducing the impact of inflammation and toxin-producing microbes

One of the main things that you can do to foster gut health is to nourish your gut’s microbiome. This includes enjoying probiotic (fermented) foods as well as prebiotic (fiber-rich) foods. Both probiotics and prebiotics are also available as dietary supplements when necessary.
