Dubai Chocolate Soars to Sweet Success via Social Media

Fueled by the internet and social media influencers, Dubai chocolate is the hottest trend in confectionary circles since the advent of the chocolate lava cake in the 1980s.

These bars of nutty pistachio butter infused with crunchy kataifi pastry (shredded phyllo dough) and enrobed with silky sweet milk chocolate have chocoholics swooning in euphoria.

The trend made its debut in 2021 when Sarah Hamouda, a British Egyptian entrepreneur, invented an alpha version of the chocolate bar to satisfy her pregnancy cravings.

Hamouda worked at Fix Dessert Chocolatier in Dubai and found inspiration for the bar from a Middle Eastern dessert called knafeh, made of kataifi, cheese and syrup.

Through social media, particularly TikTok, the concoction garnered global recognition faster than you can drink a glass of Nestle’s Nesquik.

Naturally, other chocolate makers have scurried to jump on the viral trend; for example, Lindt Chocolate offers a “Dubai-Style” chocolate bar.

Locally, Dubai chocolate bars can be found in several retail stores and restaurants throughout the Lake Area, from Market Basket check-outs to the Zeus-To-Go drive-thru and Sugar Buzz at Prien Lake Mall.

Charles offers both white and milk chocolate bars made at their sister location in Beaumont. The Chocolate Box at Golden Nugget Lake Charles Hotel & Casino make decadent bars in-house. Both these companies routinely sell out of the bars as fast as they can stock them in the candy case.

Does Dubai chocolate live up to the hype? Most chocolate lovers enthusiastically say YES! The caveat to this candy store phenomenon is the price. Bars in Lake Charles range in price from $6 for a smaller bar at Sam’s Southern Eatery to $35 for the large bar at The Chocolate Box. Most bars retail between $14-$20. Once fans move beyond the sticker shock, they agree; it’s worth the cost for an occasional special treat.

Today, culinary creatives worldwide have invented a variety of sweet treats based on the Dubai chocolate sensation, including right here is Southwest Louisiana. You can find variations in cookies, cakes and all manner of Dubai chocolate-inspired desserts. This writer is waiting for Dubai chocolate ice cream to find its way to Lake Charles!

SOURDOUGH SEPTEMBER Ancient Bread to Modern Hobby

Sourdough starter, made with wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria, was the OG method for making leavened bread.

This was the first type of bread made that wasn’t a flatbread and was consumed even in ancient Egypt. In a time when many Americans just go to a grocery store to buy bread created for mass consumption, interest in this ancient bread has skyrocketed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Go on social media and you’ll find many groups and accounts dedicated to the creation of sourdough bread. People feed their sourdough starter, name them and ask fellow bakers for advice when

something goes wrong with it.

Even Taylor Swift recently admitted to being obsessed with making sourdough bread in the New Heights podcast with her boyfriend Travis Kelce.

What makes sourdough so appealing? First, it’s about its simplicity. We eat foods every day that contain a dozen or more ingredients, and most of the time we have no idea what we are eating. Sourdough consists of only three ingredients—flour, water and salt. Next, sourdough starter breaks down gluten, so it’s gentler for people with sensitivities. The fermentation process gives the bread its tangy taste and provides prebiotics for optimal gut health.

The bread also has a lower glycemic index than other breads, so blood sugar levels are better regulated.

The nutrient profile of sourdough bread is also higher than your average loaf of bread.

However, health reasons are not the only motive for people baking this bread. Sourdough has a different texture and taste than other popular breads. It’s chewy

and crispy to bite into. And many people love the special taste fermentation gives the bread.

Sourdough aficionados also love the process of making the bread.

It’s common for us to get so caught up in life that we neglect ourselves, but we can only perform at our highest level if we’re investing in our own wellbeing. So, sit back, relax and check out some of the following tips for how to invest in a little more “me” time.

One of the best ways to induce deep relaxation and healing in the body is to book a full body massage. SWLA has plenty of massage parlors and spas to choose from, so book your favorite therapist or try a new to you place. Don’t know where to start? Search for places that play soothing instrumental music and provide hot stone therapy or other amenities 10

like warm eye masks. The benefits of massage include reduced inflammation, better sleep, pain relief and more.

Human touch though massage is known to increase positive neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. It can also reduce the stress hormone cortisol.

Be sure to tell your therapist about any issues you might be having or any areas you want them to avoid before the massage starts to ensure a satisfactory experience.

A good facial and/or laser treatment can address problematic skin conditions or simply boost skin radiance. A facial menu will usually give a few options based on what issues you want to target.

Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C boost hydration and provide some sun protection. A resurfacing facial will get rid of dead skin cells and aim to improve skin elasticity, increase collagen production and even out skin texture.

There are even certain procedures that

address sun damage, such as melasma, reduce fine lines and tighten skin. Do your research and pick a qualified esthetician who will explain what to expect with your chosen treatment.

Sometimes you just need a calm mind. Learn how to help achieve one by attending a guided meditation. The practice not only helps mental

clarity, it can also reduce stress, depressive symptoms and anxiety for increased mental health. There are notable physical benefits too, such as lower blood pressure and a strengthened immune system. Meditation can go hand-inhand with yoga practice, which has many of the same benefits. In addition, yoga can increase flexibility and core strength. There are plenty of qualified yoga instructions in SWLA guiding these practices, but if you want a little extra fun, goat yoga is a unique option available in Lake Charles.

Our diets today usually don’t provide us with enough nutrients for optimal health. If you notice physical symptoms, even as minor as white marks on your nails, that can indicate a

nutrient deficiency. Visit a local natural pharmacy to talk with an expert who will guide you on possible vitamins, minerals or other supplements you can take to address concerns. Ashwagandha, for example, helps to regular cortisol. Of course, the best way to discover if you have a deficiency is to get your doctor to order bloodwork. This will ensure no big issues stand out or if you’re low on vitamin D, which often happens in the winter months.

How To Prevent Common Football Injuries

Over one million teens play high school football, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

supervise the group’s sports medicine department and its staff of experienced athletic trainers who provide sports medicine coverage for many area high schools, working to prevent and treat injuries in young athletes.

It’s no secret that football has a high rate of injuries—even at the high school level. While other sports (basketball, baseball, soccer) all carry their fair share of risks and dangers, no sport matches football in terms of the number and severity of injuries reported annually, with studies showing between two to four injures per 1,000 athlete exposures. And when compared to college football players, a study by the Center for injury Research and Policy found that high school players experienced more serious injuries, with a greater proportion of season-ending injuries including fractures and concussions.

Researchers have found that running plays were the leading cause of injury in high school football and accounted for the majority of seasonending injuries and concussions. Positions with the greatest risk of injury were running backs and linebackers. Dr. Anderson says these types of injuries could be reduced with additional instruction on appropriate tackling and blocking techniques as well as position-specific conditioning. “In addition, coaches, parents, trainers and players need to be aware of the symptoms of concussions and respond to these in a medically appropriate way, without delay,” says Dr. Anderson. “This is something we are addressing intensively with the schools we work with.”

“These statistics might give parents pause when it comes to their children playing high school football, but, fortunately, there is good news as well. Football injures can be prevented,” says Alex Anderson, MD, primary care sports medicine specialist with the Center for Orthopaedics (CFO).

Dr. Anderson stresses that the main thing players, parents and coaches need to understand is while football does have a high rate of injuries, injury is not inevitable and the risk can definitely be

reduced. “There are many ways to reduce the number and severity of football-related injuries.

For example, we typically see many ankle and knee injuries. Increased conditioning, including stretching and strength training, for these vulnerable body sites can help prevent these types of injuries.”

Dr. Anderson adds that another key factor parents and coaches need to remember is that high school athletes are not merely miniature versions of adult athletes. “A player shouldn’t be forced to do things he isn’t physically capable of doing.

Coaches and parents bear a prime responsibility in developing young athletes and watching for early signs of physical problems. Players also need to be encouraged to speak up when something feels wrong. They shouldn’t be told to ‘play through the pain.’ One of the best lessons a young athlete can learn is to listen to their bodies and take care of injury sooner, rather than later, when it could become more serious and put them on the sidelines for the entire season.”

Promote and Protect Your Brain Health at Every Age

by Angie Kay Dilmore You’ve heard the stories. A child is critically injured and in a coma from an all-terrain vehicle accident. A father with young children suffers a life-threatening brain aneurysm. A beloved grandmother and her family deal with the devastation of Alzheimer’s disease. Whether from accidents, illnesses, even loneliness, there is no end to the maladies that threaten to rob us of our brain health. Some brain diseases, such as cancer, attack without warning or apparent cause. But there are actions we can take at every age to help promote and protect our brain health.

Sonya Brooks, owner and speech language pathologist at Hope Therapy Center in Lake Charles, says some healthy brain habits pertain to people of ALL ages. Consistent sleep routines and quality sleep in adequate amounts are important for everyone. “Breathing through the nose with no snoring is for best brain health,” Brooks adds.

Good nutrition including vegetables, fruits, proteins and carbs, regular physical activity and stress management are vital at every stage of life.

Decreasing the risk of brain injury due to head trauma, e.g. by wearing a helmet when riding a bike, motorcycle or horseback riding, is also crucial for people of all ages.

Highlighted below are other age-specific goals to adopt for youth, the middle-aged and seniors.

YOUTH

Develop language and reading skills.

Conversations, storytelling, even singing all promote language which fosters brain health.

Make reading to your children part of your daily routine. “The stronger the language skill, the better the cognitive, emotional and social skills will develop,” says Brooks.

Lower stress. Maintaining a stable home environment and responding to your child’s needs decreases stress which promotes brain function.

Spend time outdoors and encourage playtime. Exploring and using all five senses to engage in nature fosters brain activity.

Play promotes cognitive growth through games and stimulating toys.

Limit screen time. Hours playing video games, watching television and scrolling social media decreases physical activity time and can interfere with sleep, which can negatively impact attention and ability to focus.

“Kids who are physically active (especially outdoors) tend to have better wake/sleep cycles,” says Brooks. “Remember that children and adolescents need more sleep than adults!”

Protect the Head. Parents should insist a child wear a helmet when participating in activities that have the potential for brain injuries, such as bike and ATV riding and sports such as football and baseball.

MIDDLE AGE

Brooks says midlife is when brain-protective habits (exercise, mental stimulation, social connection) have the greatest impact on reducing future risk of cognitive decline.

Healthy body, healthy mind. Managing chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure help protect the brain.

Get off the couch. Prolonged sitting can contribute to decreased memory formation.

Don’t smoke and limit alcohol. These habits are bad for your brain.

Stay socially engaged. Life in middle age can be very busy. Strive to maintain friendships and relationships with family. Social interactions can decrease stress and promote well-being and mental health.

SENIORS

Stay sharp. This is the age when people start to worry about dementia. To stimulate cognition, learn new skills, such as a different language.

Develop new hobbies, read books, write letters and challenge yourself with puzzles and games.

Forge friendships. Social interactions are even more important at this age to maintain good brain health. Join clubs or civic groups with like-minded people.

Move, move, move. The cliché “use it or lose it” has never been more true than in your senior years.

But now you have the time to make it fun! Learn some line dances, pickleball or bean bag baseball.

These types of activities provide both physical and social benefits. Brooks also suggests incorporating weight bearing and outdoor exercises.

Prevent falls. Seniors are at increased risk of falls which can result in concussions. Limit potential accidents by removing tripping hazards from your home and installing grab bars in the tub/shower.

In summary, Brooks says to keep your brain healthy at every age, focus on a combination of physical and mental activity, social activities and managing overall health.

For Dr. Tyson Green, being a physician is more than just a profession, it’s a calling.

As a foot and ankle specialist, he faces the complexities of diabetic care on a daily basis, particularly in Southwest Louisiana, where the need is great and access to healthcare can be limited.

“I love my job because it challenges me daily, especially when treating diabetic patients, where managing complex needs and complications can be difficult,” Dr. Green explains. “Many of these challenges are foot-related, such as wounds, infections and the risk of amputation. But it’s incredibly rewarding to help people improve their health, particularly those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who often face the greatest barriers to care.”

That sense of mission is at the heart of why Dr. Green chose medicine. “The reason I became a physician is rooted in my love of science and healthcare, but even more in the deep fulfillment that comes from helping people,” he says.

DR. BRIAN GAMBORG FAMILY MEDICINE AND HOSPITAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital

For nearly three decades, Dr. Brian Gamborg has cared for families across Southwest Louisiana, blending his Canadian roots with a deep commitment to his adopted home.

From the fields of the Canadian Prairies to a hospital in Sulphur, his journey has been guided by a simple belief: medicine is about people, their stories and the privilege of walking alongside them in every stage of life.

“My wife and I come from agricultural backgrounds and grew up in the Canadian Prairies,” Dr. Gamborg says. “Canadian farmers have a great deal in common with people in Southwest Louisiana.

Agriculture and mining or petroleum are the core industries of both areas, and the people who live and work in these communities are very similar.”

That sense of shared values—hard work, perseverance and community—shaped him from an early age. His father, a first-generation immigrant from Denmark, set a powerful example. “After World War II, my father believed the future was in North America,” Dr. Gamborg explains. “He arrived at Ellis Island with no English, no money and only a sixthgrade education. Within eight years, he had earned a Ph.D. in plant biochemistry.”

His father’s career at the Canadian National Research Council was marked by groundbreaking 24

work in plant cell research and a commitment to helping others, particularly in developing countries.

“He eventually traveled to Southeast Asia to establish agricultural research in local communities,” Dr. Gamborg says. “That drive to help others encouraged me to view medicine as an opportunity to continue his mission.”

Although he was accepted into multiple subspecialties, Dr. Gamborg was always drawn to family medicine. “Family practice allows for continuity in a way that no other specialty does,” he says. “Early in my career in Canada, I was involved in pediatrics, obstetrics, internal medicine and palliative care. On a single day, I might be providing palliative care to an elderly person in the last stages of cancer and later delivering her grandchild. That degree of involvement with numerous families has always felt like a huge privilege.”

In 1997, Dr. Gamborg and his family relocated to Sulphur, Louisiana, a move inspired partly by the climate. “Winters in Canada were becoming a chore,” he admits. “Going to work when it was 40 below with a 40-mile-an-hour wind had lost its luster.”

Since then, he has devoted himself to family practice and hospital medicine in Southwest Louisiana. In 2015, he also began teaching at the family medicine residency program in Lake Charles.

Today, he provides hospital medicine services at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital.

“In hospital medicine, the overlap between medical health, financial limitations and social barriers is very apparent,” Dr. Gamborg says. “Many of the patients we see have health problems that could have been prevented if they had access to services earlier. Too often, people fall through the cracks through no fault of their own.”

Despite these challenges, his motivation never wavers. “There’s an old saying: ‘If you love what you’re doing, work is not a four-letter word,’” he says. “I cannot recall a single day when I wasn’t motivated to go to work. The next patient who walks in will always challenge me intellectually and medically, and it’s my job to do the right thing, for the right reasons, to help them.”

The rewards, he adds, are profound. “Seeing people who are extremely ill, many of whom have given up, respond to treatment and return to normal, healthy lives—that’s what makes this work so meaningful.”

Dr. Devin Seale, general surgeon with Sulphur Surgical Center, always knew his goal was to become a physician.

His grandfather, Dr. W. A. K. Seale, and his father, Dr. A. Kent Seale, were founding members of Sulphur Surgical Center. “My dad and grandfather were certainly influences on my career choice. I fondly remember making rounds with my dad at the hospital as a child and I’ve continued that tradition with my children. Those experiences with him guided my decision to become a general surgeon.”

He received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his residency in general surgery at Oschner’s Medical Center, also in New Orleans.

Dr. Seale says the Hippocratic Oath is more than just the principle “do no harm;” it is a pledge to always act in the best interest of the patient. “Patient care is my central focus each day both in how I practice medicine and how I live my life. United Way Southwest Louisiana announces a donation of 50 HP laptops from AT&T. The donation will support children from ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families in our community. This Initiative is designed to provide essential technological resources to help bridge the digital divide for kindergarten to 12th-grade students in Southwest Louisiana. POLICE JURY HOLDS GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW JUDICIAL COMPLEX

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, along with other parish and city officials, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Judicial Complex in downtown Lake Charles, marking the start of construction on one of the largest public facility projects in parish history.

The new three-story, 108,000-square-foot facility will be located between the Magnolia Building and the Parish Government Building. Designed to complement the nearby historic courthouse, the Judicial Complex will consolidate all district court operations, including family, juvenile, civil and criminal courts, into one modern, efficient building.

Once complete, the complex will include 11 courtrooms, public waiting areas, jury deliberation rooms, judges’ chambers and staff offices. It will also house dedicated space for the District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and Clerk of Court staff. Separate holding areas for adults and juveniles will be included to enhance safety and security.

Upon completion of the new complex, the current 14th Judicial District Court building will be demolished. In its place, the Police Jury will create a new green space called Calcasieu Square, and a walkable path through the complex that will link Lakeshore Drive to Ryan Street.

The existing courthouse on Lakeshore Drive will remain open throughout construction.

To support continued access for all visitors, additional accessible parking will be made available. The public should use the Ryan Street entrance for access to the Parish Government Building.

Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of the Parish’s online services for permit applications, park rentals, and bill payments to help reduce in-person traffic during construction. These services can be found at calcasieu.gov.

The project architect is Champeaux Evans Hotard Architects, and the contractor is Lemoine. Construction is expected to take just under two and a half years, with completion anticipated in the first quarter of 2028. Project timelines may be adjusted as the contractor finalizes scheduling.

Residents can visit calcasieu.gov/judicialcomplex to stay informed throughout the construction process, see video updates, explore site plans, see parking maps, and sign up for email notifications.

SOWELA PLANS TO HOST 80-PLUS ACTIVELY HIRING EMPLOYERS AT FALL CAREER FAIR

SOWELA Technical Community College will host a Fall Career Fair on Wednesday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Sycamore Student Center at the main campus in Lake Charles. Current students and alums of the College are welcome to attend. SOWELA expects more than 80 organizations from around the region to participate, with all employers actively hiring.

Various organizations from different employment sectors will attend, including hospitality; hospitals and health care organizations; local, state and federal agencies; industrial companies; financial services and many more.

Love’s Travel Stops kicked off its annual Miracle Balloon Campaign to raise critical funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) in support of CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana.

This nationwide initiative brings together Love’s locations from coast to coast to help change kids’ health to change the future.

HOMECOMING FLORALS With The Flower Shop of Lake Charles

Homecoming corsages and boutonnieres have been around for centuries. While currently associated with formal events, these wearable floral pieces have their origins in ancient history. They were worn to show support during wars or sporting events. They were also used to mask smells and believed to keep away evil spirits. The pieces became associated with romance in the Victorian age and now are a staple at weddings and school dances.

But what does the tradition of exchanging these floral accessories for homecoming night look like in 2025? Thrive asked Kaila Ramos, owner and executive florist at The Flower Shop of Lake Charles, to find out.

“Homecoming is one of my favorite times of the year. There’s just something so special about helping students get ready for their big night.

I love when they come in with their dress photos or color ideas and we get to create something that makes them feel confident and celebrated.

It’s not just about flowers, it’s about being part of those memories,” Ramos says.

There is almost an endless supply of beautiful flowers in the world, but none can beat the timeless red rose for popularity and wearability.

“Roses, either fresh or silk, are always

a classic choice and probably the most popular, especially spray roses because of their size and durability,” Ramos says. While a standard choice, not everyone wants to follow the norm. “For students who want something a little different, I love using mums, daisies or even succulents. Each flower has its own personality, and I enjoy helping students pick something that reflects their style,” Ramos adds. Orchids are another popular choice.

When it comes to creating a corsage or boutonniere, Ramos’ first step is to consider the outfit being worn and build from there. She requests photos or fabric samples for optimal color matching and also considers what the student wants and whether the design should be traditional or something out-of-the-box.

One of the most important steps when considering a corsage or boutonniere, Ramos says, is to not wait until the last minute to start planning. “The earlier you order, the more options you’ll have for customizing your flowers. And don’t be afraid to add little details like ribbons, accents or sparkle. It’s your night to shine, and your flowers can be just as unique as you are.”

Trends always expand and evolve over time, and Ramos says that not all girls are requesting wrist corsages.

“We’re creating arms cuffs, finger ring corsages and even floral anklets. For boutonnieres, textured greenery and unique accents like berries or dried elements are very in style. Metallic ribbons and touches of glitter are also popular with students who want that extra pop.”

Floral accents for homecoming celebrations can extend beyond just the corsage and boutonniere.

“We often make small handheld bouquets for photos. It really makes

the pictures feel extra special,” Ramos says. “Some families order arrangements for pre-dance dinners or even after-parties to dress up the table. Flowers have a way of elevating the whole experience and making homecoming feel like a true celebration. At the end of the day, I just want every student to walk out with flowers that make them smile and feel confident. If their corsage or boutonniere makes them light up when they put it on, then we’ve done our job.

Marcantel and Desorneaux says they’ve seen sleek styles decline recently as girls are opting for loose hairstyles like a wispy messy bun, a low bun updo with fringe or half up hairstyles with loose waves.

Another trendy style is adding volume by creating waves that can either be worn down or pinned back.

Marcantel says, “I love an updo because if it’s nasty outside and they’re dancing a lot, the hairstyle is more secure.” She also recommends girls do a trial run before their homecoming event if choosing a style that’s new to them to ensure full satisfaction. Lastly, know your face shape and what styles compliment your features, but don’t forget to have fun and choose what makes you feel your best!

While that sounds like a promising percentage, there hasn’t been much growth in this number since 2017. Grounded In Nature Katy Rozas Combines Plants and Art In Her New Endeavor

Sure to be one of the coolest new places in Lake Charles, Katy Rozas calls her new business, Grounded In Nature, a “crafty plant shop.”

Rozas started a career selling insurance before investing in residential properties. Looking into purchasing commercial properties, she purchased the house where Grounded In Nature now resides at 115 W. Oak Lane, right off of Ryan Street. The property was zoned as both commercial and residential, but after the house sprung a few issues, Rozas decided she needed to go back to the drawing board with the property, remodel it and open her own business.

As the remodel progressed, Rozas’ ideas began to solidify. She leaned into art in her personal life as a “tool to get grounded” and decided that she wanted to bring the healing power of creative expression to Lake Charles, Louisiana. “I want to lead adults to crafting, so they can love their art and love themselves. It’s a way to detox from the pressures of the real world. I want people to be able to bring their lunch, a book and use their creative energy so their day is not ruined.

Grounded In Nature will provide a third space for people and be an inclusive safe space for people of all races, religions . . . people on their sober journey.”

Before diving into personal art, the property where Grounded In Nature resides is full of positive energy and original art. The privacy fence features murals by local artist Jeremy Price.

“Jeremy and I went to school together and I told him to think ‘fantastical flower’ and let him do what he wanted to do,” says Rozas. There’s a third eye, which you can see from Ryan Street, a variation of Grounded in Nature’s logo and insects. The official Grounded In Nature logo was created by local artist Maegan Gonzalez, which is a lotus in a pair of hands, but instead of simply holding the flower, the hands offer the flower.

And the flagstones in the front of the building were all hand cast by Rozas who made a total of 633 of them. The stones had to cure for 28 days.

The main crafting room at Grounded In Nature has a full ceiling mural, which 50 people contributed to. Rozas started by drawing vines on the white background and had plans to suspend plants from above. However, she had so much fun painting the vines that she invited two friends to paint leaves or vines as well. Then, Christmas Eve of 2024, another friend, who was having a bad day, stopped by and Rozas offered to let her paint a flower. This turned into Rozas inviting her “best girlfriends” and the important women in her life to also paint a flower. There are a total of 66 flowers, mostly painted by women. “I

call it my garden,” she says. “All these people are rooting for me. Nobody’s walked into this room and not smiled.”

Rozas aims to be in harmony with nature and embraces the idea of recycling and reusing.

While Rozas plans to offer a menu of crafts for people to choose from, some of the crafts planned are painting planters, making succulent bouquets, drying flowers, making wind chimes and creating bird houses. “I want to offer things people are proud to make,” she says. She hopes to offer a monthly membership where patrons can buy into monthly crafts and seeks to promote other local artists, including wood workers and local potters.

As far as the storefront side of things, Rozas is certified as a plant grower. Instead of buying plants to sell, she will have a greenhouse where plants are grown and then sold. She plans to offer popular indoor plants and succulents.

She’s also growing flowers in order to dry them for projects.

Places & Faces | ARTS & CULTURE IN THE LAKE AREA The arrival of Lee Ann Stenvick at the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA earlier this year has already changed the trajectory of the organization. In June, the organization presented a forum for local artists and other community members in which the public could give their feedback on what they need and would like to see available to them. Arts & Humanities, in collaboration with the City of Lake Charles, also recently hosted Alison Pelegrin, the Louisiana poet laureate, for an evening poetry reading.

Next is White Linen Night, a rebrand of the Gallery Promenade, on September 6.

Stenvick is a native of Gonzales, Louisiana, and moved to Lake Charles in 2023 when her husband accepted a position as assistant professor and director of theatre productions at McNeese State University. She has a background in nonprofit fundraising and support through her work at the LSU Foundation. She spoke with Thrive on what she hopes to accomplish at the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA to further support local arts and culture.

You obtained your Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University. How did being a theatre major prepare you for the work you’re doing today?

You’re about six or seven when people ask you what you want to be when you grow up. I had about 17 iterations of what I wanted to be. Then I realized that as an actor I can be all of those things. I was originally not a theatre major but in political communications because my parents wanted me to get a practical degree. Then a luminary from Lake Charles looked at me and told me I was wasting my potential. It was like Lebron James looked at you and told you you were wasting your basketball potential. That set me up on the trajectory I needed to be where I am today, which is a fundraiser and arts administrator.

A theatre background is so helpful in my day-to-day work life. I’ve learned motivation and empathy, how to see stories from other angles and perspectives that might be different from my own, how to navigate partnerships and conversation effectively.

While I was at LSU, I worked for the LSU Foundation, which introduced me to how nonprofits work and run. I stayed on until I graduated and then they offered me a full-time position. I wanted to continue working there for two years, build a nest egg and then move to Chicago, but I graduated in 2018 . . . . In 2020, everything collapsed. It made me think I have more purpose staying in nonprofit work to ensure arts organizations were ready for the pivot that would need to occur after the pandemic.

What is your earliest memory of the arts?

My parents were season ticket holders to Swine Palace, the seasonal theatre attached to LSU. I saw A Christmas Carol and it was a lifechanging experience. The audience interacted with the performance and so much fun was happening. It felt like a safe place to be.

Would you ever consider returning to theatre and taking the stage again?

When I find the time. I’m currently a part of the biggest theatre production of my life, which is being a mother. It’s the biggest game of improv. It would have to be the right time and a dream role.

You’ve hit the ground running since you started working at the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA. What initiatives have you worked on and what’s coming in the future?

When I came on, I looked under the hood to see what was there. I realized our mission hadn’t changed since our inception and that we weren’t doing our best at fulfilling that mission. We’ve worked with real intention to find where we should go next. We need initiatives that really serve that mission.

The services we provide should be inclusive, accessible and serve the entire five-parish area. We offer four grants but only one covers all of SWLA. I’m looking to change that.

Our Poetry Out Loud program . . . I want to scream it from the rooftops. High school students learn three poems and recite them, competing at the regional, state and national level, and they can win prizes. We only had 12 students involved last year. I want us to get into schools more.

We have Spring Art Walk, Chuck Fest, and the upcoming White Linen Night.

These events fuel our work for the rest of the year. Chuck Fest is not just a variety of concerts, it’s how we can ensure we have the funding to fuel our initiatives for the next year.

I want to create a regional arts award celebration and bring together all of the different artistic disciplines. Great art is happening here.

Without the arts and humanities, the world would be a bleak place. They bring life. They are the reason we work . . . to enjoy things on weekends.

This includes the culinary arts, visual arts, fashion, media . . . . We have such a strong history of storytelling in Louisiana. We bond over food and family. And food has its basis in creative expression.

Research shows for communities that invest in arts, its residents have a better quality of life, better student outcomes, better mental health. There’s the added benefit of a more involved civic public. Who doesn’t want to live in a community like this?

What should community members expect in the future from the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA? So much. We’re going to unveil a new mission soon, and pillars that will directly impact our creative community. Look out for our promotion of the Culturalyst, which will be a one-stop shop for individual artists and organizations. It will list events and provide information on grants beyond what we can do. We’re helping organizations grow in professionalism and adaptability, ensuring they can thrive—not just survive—over time.

Keep an eye out. There are tremendous things to come. I don’t want another person to say there’s nothing to do in Lake Charles. Sign up for our newsletter and it will tell you what you can do every weekend.

ACTS is launching its regular season with an adaptation of a classic children’s novel. Director Kathy Heath says, “I am so lucky to have such a talented group of people working on James and the Giant Peach with me.

They have been working hard to put on a magical and wondrous show that will enchant young and old.“ The show will be on stage starting September 19th, running for two weekends, with school shows available on September 25th.

The rest of ACTS’ main season includes Five Women Wearing the Same Dress in January, a story about a bridal party on the cusp of mutiny. Then Sister Act is on stage in March, based on the 90s movie of the same name, although the musical is set in the 70s. The Mousetrap, a classic Agatha Christie mystery, finishes the season out in May.

HISTORIC CITY HALL ARTS & CULTU�AL CENTER

Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center is celebrating 20 years of arts and culture, but its roots in the local community reach back much further.

Historic City Hall opened its doors in 1911 as the new city hall after being destroyed by the Great Fire of 1910. In 2001, Mayor Randy Roach of Lake Charles initiated the renovation of the 1911 City Hall for use as a cultural center and placed the building on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic City Hall Arts and 52

Cultural Center, as it became known, opened its doors in September 2004 and hosted its first exhibit in November 2005.

Over the past two decades, the center has presented more than 275 exhibitions, ranging from nationally traveling shows to local and regional artists. Some of the most famous ones include The Titanic Experience and exhibitions on Norman Rockwell and Picasso.

Beyond exhibitions, Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center is a vibrant hub for community events, cultural programs, educational field trips, and visual

The center also proudly hosts the Charlestown Farmers Market every Saturday morning.

A Q&A With Outgoing Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin

You might’ve heard Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin at a reading last month as she was hosted by the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA and the City of Lake Charles.

If not, get to know the Covington resident and author of Our Lady of Bewilderment, Waterlines, Hurricane Party, Big Muddy River of Stars, and Our Lady of the Flood below.

Pelegrin received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Southeastern Louisiana University, where she has taught for the last 20 years. She earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from the University of Arkansas.

Pelegrin held the position of Louisiana Poet Laureate for 2023-2025, a position that expired as Thrive went to press. The incoming Louisiana Poet Laureate has yet to be announced.

What inspired you to become a poet?

Was it a childhood dream?

I didn’t have a good idea of what poetry was when I was younger. What I can say is that I have always been obsessed with books and writing and spaces that encourage such behavior—libraries, reading nooks, armchairs.

How would you describe your writing process and style?

have a fully formed idea about what I could bring to the role.

Every time I write a poem it is as if I have never done it before. The whole thing feels strange and new and out of control, and I happen to love that feeling. So when I am working on a poem, all I can say is that I am thrilled and confident and uncertain all at once. I have never been one to stick to a strict schedule or word count. I don’t want poetry to be something I have to do. It’s better if I choose it.

What does a day in the life as writer-inresidence at Southeastern Louisiana University look like?

Your poetry and your identity as a Louisiana native seem to be inseparable.

How has local culture inspired you?

More than being inspired by Louisiana or driven to write about Louisiana, I can say that once I realized poems could be about anything and could take place anywhere, I felt a huge sense of validation about my upbringing on the Westbank of New Orleans—in Gretna. I don’t know why I felt the need to "ask permission" to write about my background, but once I realized that there was an important, prominent place for Gretna, Louisiana, in poetry, I understood that I would never run out of things to write about.

Poetry is about really seeing, and what do you see more than the random, sometimes ugly, sometimes boring or rigid or uncool places from where you come from?

How did you feel when you were named poet laureate of Louisiana?

When Miranda Restovic from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities called with the news, I didn't recognize her number.

But once I realized who it was, and why she was calling, I was so excited! Honestly, I also panicked a bit because at the time I didn’t

Southeastern has been so wonderful for me.

I received BA and MA degrees there, and then after earning my MFA, I returned as faculty in a role I have held for over twenty years. As writer-in-residence I work to create programming that gets students excited about literature. I have planned countless events in support of this goal with the hope of creating the kinds of programs that were so influential on me during my time as a student there.

How did you engage with the literary and cultural community throughout the state?

I did a lot of traveling for events throughout the state as Louisiana Poet Laureate, but my favorite—and most important—engagement was with the incarcerated population. After a marvelous visit to Louisiana State Prison, I realized that I had to do everything in my power to bring poetry into Louisiana prisons, and I was lucky enough to receive funding from The Academy of American Poets and the Foundation for Louisiana. What part of your work do you find the most fulfilling?

I love all parts of my work. I love the creative act, I love my teaching and service at Southeastern, I love to travel the great state of Louisiana and I love to bring poetry into prisons. Though my term as Louisiana Poet Laureate 2023-2025 is now over, I feel lucky to be able to continue all of this work.

Quebec City: History, Culture and a Touch of Home

by Kristy Como Armand When I signed up for Road Scholar’s Independent City Discoveries program in Québec City, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but that spurof-the-moment decision led to an amazing experience. My goal was a to take a summer trip that took me away from our heat and humidity.

Canada seemed like a good choice. I departed not knowing much about the city and came home with a deep appreciation for all it offers.

Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization with a 50-year history of offering programs for adults. Often described as “learning adventures,” their trips combine expert-led lectures, cultural immersion and hands-on experiences. Programs range from international journeys to U.S.-based explorations. Their Independent City Discoveries option, which is the type of trip I booked to Québec City, provides the flexibility of free time while still offering guided orientation walks, expert insights and the security of an organized trip.

Our hotel was centrally located in Old Town Quebec City. Old Town is like stepping into a living museum where history, culture and architecture seamlessly come together. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Old Town is the heart and soul of Québec, with its Upper and Lower Towns offering unique experiences. As the only fortified city north of Mexico, the cobblestone streets, stone walls and charming architecture instantly immerse visitors in a unique blend of European history and Canadian warmth.

Highlights of a walking tour of Old Town included the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre Dame de Quebec, which is not only the oldest parish church north of Mexico but the only major Basilica outside of Europe. The Château Frontenac, a 19thcentury masterpiece, towers above the St. Lawrence River and commands the skyline. This grand hotel isn’t just a symbol of the city; it represents the era of railway expansion and the luxurious architecture that came with it. Upper Town is also home to the Citadelle of Québec and the city’s formidable fortifications, a reminder of its strategic military past. Walking along the walls, it’s easy to get a sense of how Québec defended its place in North America, blending French and British influences.

The area’s stone churches and public buildings showcase striking examples of Baroque and Gothic design, testifying to centuries of faith and resilience.

The connection between Quebec City and Louisiana popped up in much of the history I learned about on tours as well. After the Great Upheaval of the 18th century, many Acadians made their way south, settling in Louisiana and becoming the Cajuns we know today. We learned this in 8th grade history but hearing it from the “other side” was impactful. In Québec, I saw echoes

Upper Town’s winding alleys and historic buildings also host galleries, traditional restaurants, street performers and music that echo the city’s French heritage. Every building, from ornate balconies to intricately carved doors, tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition.

Walking between Lower Town and Upper Town involves over 350 steps or you can take a scenic ride on the funicular—I did both. Lower Town also brims with character. We visited Place Royale, the site where Samuel de Champlain founded the city in 1608. More cobblestone streets, surrounded by bustling shops and iconic murals tell the story of Québec’s beginnings. For me, the magic of Old Town Québec lies in its seamless fusion of past and present. It’s an experience that lingers, and it’s definitely on my list for a return visit.

At SOWELA, Fox spent extra time experimenting with 3D modeling. Her instructor noticed her passion and encouraged her to “dream bigger than what was in the classroom.” That side project sparked a curiosity that eventually propelled her into aerospace programs and beyond.

After completing her associate’s degree, Fox transferred into a bachelor’s program in engineering. She spent a decade working in mechanical and ship design before moving into database management for power plants at Entergy.

But Fox has never been one to stop at “good enough.”

Most recently, Fox was named an astronaut candidate by Titans Space Industries, a space tourism company led by veteran NASA astronaut Bill McArthur. She is scheduled to take an orbital flight in 2029, where she will also contribute to FAA air regulation efforts. In addition, she works as a technical advisor for spacesuit design, drafting specialized suits for different missions.

Even while reaching for the stars, Fox continues to climb here on Earth. This summer, she was promoted to senior lead technical support specialist at Entergy. But her focus is always on what comes next.

When we talk about “quality of life,” what does that really mean for residents, and why is it important for a growing community like ours?

Quality of life reflects how well a city meets the needs of its residents, from safety and healthcare to education and opportunities for connection. For some, it means access to parks, entertainment and recreation.

For others, it’s about building relationships, job opportunities or creating and maintaining a stable home for themselves and their families. Understanding and measuring these factors can help cities make informed decisions

and invest in areas that align with their citizens’ needs and wants.

A high quality of life doesn’t just benefit current residents; it also helps attract new ones. It brings more customers to local businesses, expands the talent pool for industries and strengthens the economy through continued growth and reinvestment.

What are the biggest barriers to improving quality of life in our community, and how can city projects overcome them?

For local leaders, maintaining and improving the quality of life is an ongoing challenge. As communities grow and evolve,

the needs of residents change.

What worked in the past may not work today. Barriers such as limited budgets, time constraints, accessibility and serving a diverse population make the issue even more complex. Because quality of life touches so many areas—from infrastructure and public services to social programs and recreation—it requires strong cross-organizational collaboration between city departments, private businesses and other community partners.

Aligning these efforts helps reduce the potential for overlap and ensures time and resources are used effectively. Another useful and cost-effective tool is engaging the public. Including residents in the planning process helps ensure projects reflect real priorities. And by planning ahead, cities can stay proactive, thereby saving time, money and frustration down the road.

What role do community events, parks and shared public spaces play in improving our daily lives and sense of connection to the city?

Long project timelines and infrastructure improvements are unavoidable but necessary. It can be exhausting and difficult to stay patient when there is always “work ahead.” For this reason, community events, parks and shared public

spaces are especially important in supporting both the immediate and long-term well-being of the city and its residents. Wellmaintained parks with walking paths, engaging play structures and thoughtfully designed, welcoming spaces can help promote overall wellness across all age groups.

When these spaces are creatively programmed and actively used, they foster social connection and a sense of belonging. And when executed just right, it can turn residents into stakeholders. People who feel more connected to and supported by their city often want to contribute and give back. This is another way to bring residents to the table and get meaningful feedback and input in return.

How do you measure the success of quality-of-life improvements?

What indicators show that people are truly benefiting from these investments?

More participation in community events, positive interactions on social media and greater public awareness of city initiatives are all signs that residents are informed, excited and supportive of local efforts. Statistically, reducing traffic congestion, crime rates and health-related issues points to a healthier, safer and more satisfied community. Improving quality of life is not a one-time goal, but an

ongoing commitment. To honor that commitment for all residents, a city must continue to listen, adapt and invest to ensure the community remains a place where

people feel supported, connected and proud to call home.

From the Desk of the McNeese Prez A college graduate walks away with more than a degree, they have a network. Students building relationships with peers and professionals in their field is as important as their degree.

We continue to build relationships with our communities for the benefit of our students. The LNG Center for Excellence will open soon and we just signed a 20-year lease to house the PHMSA National Center of Excellence for LNG Safety in our Center. Our students will have tremendous opportunities because of this partnership.

More than 170 companies and employers in Southwest Louisiana have participated in the McNeese Works Here campaign over the last two years. We are launching the campaign again so our students and the community can see just how many McNeese alum are working in our region. Through billboards and social media our students can see just where their degree might take them and open the door to build those relationships.

McNeese Announces New Undergraduate Nursing Leaders McNeese State University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions announces Dr. Amelia Washington as the new department head of undergraduate nursing and Jennifer Barrow as the new program coordinator for the undergraduate nursing program.

Washington was previously the assistant department head where she led initiatives in student advising, recruitment, retention and curriculum development. She implemented student engagement programs such as Nursing Q&A and Student Appreciation Week. Washington earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Grand Canyon University and has more than nine years of clinical experience in neonatal intensive care, maternal health and medical-surgical nursing.

Barrow is a tenured associate professor with over a decade of experience in nursing education and curriculum development. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in health care education and has completed extensive doctoral coursework in nursing at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.

Barrow’s scholarly focus on student-professional role transition and impostor syndrome in academia has helped prepare McNeese senior nursing students for clinical practice.

As program coordinator, Barrow will oversee the undergraduate nursing program, bringing her expertise in online education, evidence-based practice and student mentorship to enhance program quality and student outcomes.

McNeese Student Studies McNeese Theatre Integrating VR into the Classroom Season Passes McNeese State University’s Medical Laboratory Science program is integrating virtual reality (VR) into the classroom.

“Through an application to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention OneLab,

we received three Meta Quest 3 headsets at no cost.

Since fall 2024, three of our Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) students have been researching the potential use of VR in both training and practice,” explained Whitnee Brame, assistant professor.

They focused their research on assessing the effectiveness and user experience of VR content that is designed to simulate real-world laboratory scenarios. The OneLab VR platform includes 12 different laboratory settings with a total of 50,000 square feet of virtual laboratories.

expensive instruments and equipment. Additionally, handling biohazardous specimens poses a risk to students and faculty.

“In a virtual laboratory, users can work with all the instruments required in a real-world laboratory and biohazardous specimens can be handled with zero risk of getting infected,” Shrestha said.

"So, working in a simulated real-world laboratory and gaining experience without actually being there were extremely interesting for me.”

“The study concluded that VR could enhance the realism and accessibility of laboratory learning,” Shrestha said.

"Ultimately, VR holds promise as a valuable complement to traditional methods in medical laboratory education.”

McNeese State University’s W.A. and Dorothy Hanna Department of Performing Arts is now offering season passes for the 20252026 theatre season, featuring three awardwinning productions.

The $40 season pass is one ticket for each of the three productions that include Buried Child, Next to Normal and The Flick. • Trees – Planting trees in the fall gives roots time to establish in the relatively mild SWLA winter months, setting the stage for strong growth in spring.

- Hardy varieties like live oak, bald cypress, red maple and crape myrtle thrive when planted in autumn, ensuring healthier, more resilient trees once warmer weather returns.

- Fruit trees, including apple, pear, peach and citrus trees perform well when planted in fall, setting the stage for healthy growth in the spring.

• Shrubs and Perennials – Fall is the perfect time to plant hardy shrubs like hydrangeas or perennials like daylilies. They’ll settle in over winter and reward you with growth and blooms in spring.

• Bulbs – Paperwhites, daffodils and hyacinths may not be the first flowers you think of in Louisiana, but many varieties thrive here when planted in fall. Select bulbs suited for the mild winters for best results.

Fall: The Perfect Time to Consider Investing in a Pool

You usually don’t associate fall with swimming.

As air temperatures and humidity decrease, the desire to submerge yourself outside can subside.

However, just because fall isn’t prime swimming season doesn’t mean pool installations are slowing down.
