Now that Father’s Day is just around the corner, finding the right gift for Dad can get harder when cute macaroni art is no longer appropriate. With that in mind, Hokus Pokus has a number of respectable gifts for the man who has everything. They’re perfect for the bourbon sipping papa in your life.

To start, Jim Beam has a small batch bourbon, Booker’s, and this 2025 variety is better known as “Jerry’s Batch.” An over seven-year-aged spirit, this whiskey is uncut and unfiltered, straight from the barrel to the bottle at its natural proof, which for this run was right at about 124. With a rich caramel aroma and a vanilla/toffee taste that leaves behind a toasted oak finish, this is easily a smooth sipping whiskey certain to leave a smile on Dad’s face.

Another possibility is the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, a high-end, uncut and unfiltered bourbon out of Kentucky.

Three batches are produced each year, with each having a distinct age, proof and flavor profile. Right now, the favorite at Hokus Pokus is the B525 batch, but you might find one of the others on hand to better suit the palate. This is a fine bottle that turns heads upon being taken out of the cabinet.

Finally, for the perfect accessory, pick up a set of Glacier Rocks, either in traditional cube form or in a nice, fancy sphere. These ice-cube substitutes are known to keep drinks colder without diluting them, letting your father enjoy a nice, cold sip of whiskey without having to worry about it watering down.

RY3 offers a number of variations of whiskey, but one that Katelyn Young at Hokus Pokus pointed out was their Light Whiskey, which she stated was something that wasn’t often seen on shelves. Aged 14 years, there’s a lot to like in this little bottle. Light Whiskeys tend to have a higher proof and are aged in used or uncharred oak barrels.

Skipping the heavy char flavors allows for more of a candied, creamy taste on the palate while maintaining an oak finish.

If dad’s liquor cabinet is already stock-full, then the pivot might be to the Alchemi Single Serve Smoked Cocktail Kit, which is just as it sounds, everything the old man will need to infuse his drinks with a rich, smoked oak quality. A Craft Passed Down

Nearly six decades after opening its doors, Lake Charles Poultry remains rooted in its founding principles of family, craftsmanship and community.

As Father’s Day approaches, the business also serves as a reminder of the traditions often passed down around the dinner table as well as from behind the counter. What began with Melanie Bellard Evans’ father in 1969 continues today through another generation of the family, ensuring that the values and work ethic that helped build the business remain a central focus today.

As the sun rises over Lake Charles, the work is already underway. Behind the counter, orders are still filled by hand, customers ask for cuts by name and generations of family continue to shape the rhythm of the day. Evans and her husband Sam have been at the helm since her brother Danny’s retirement in 2025 and their daughter works as the office manager alongside her husband who is also on the team.

In an industry that is moving more toward prepackaged convenience, Lake Charles Poultry has maintained a more personal approach according to Evans. “We are proud of our reputation built on providing organic, hormone-free chicken and specialty meats, but we are even more proud of the relationships we’ve formed across the counter through decades of serving Southwest Louisiana.”

For Sam, who oversees the day-to-day operations, the day starts with preparing orders, cutting meats to request and helping customers decide exactly what they need.

This is a routine that has changed very little over the years and it’s a hands-on process that Evans says people still appreciate. “As customers become more interested in where their food comes from, and how it’s prepared, we’ve seen customers pay closer attention to sourcing and quality.”

The business has also become a familiar presence at local church functions, family celebrations and neighborhood events throughout the area. For the Evans family, this connection to the community is just as important as the produce behind the counter. “We’ve watched families grow up coming here,” Evans explains. “Now we’re seeing their children and grandchildren coming in too. That is something that is really special to us.”

As another generation steps into the business, the family aims to continue the traditions that have defined Lake Charles Poultry since 1969. Quality products, hands-on service and the kind of customer relationships that are increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world remain a central focus for the family.

While the food industry has seen a lot of change over the years, the Evans family believes there is still value in key lessons taught by her father—slowing down, knowing your customers and taking pride in the work behind the counter.

Silent Health Risks Men Too Often Ignore

Many of the most serious health conditions affecting men develop quietly, often without obvious symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. From heart disease and diabetes to certain cancers and high blood pressure, these “silent diseases” can progress for years unnoticed, making them especially dangerous for men who tend to dismiss symptoms or delay seeking medical attention.

“Too many men wait until something feels alarmingly wrong before they see a doctor,” says Nurse Practitioner Garett Istre, APRN, with Calcasieu Family Physicians of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Carlyss. “The problem is that many serious conditions can progress for years without obvious symptoms.”

Heart Disease. This continues to be the leading cause of death among men in the United States.

While chest pain is commonly associated with heart problems, many men experience few symptoms before a serious cardiac event occurs.

High cholesterol, obesity, smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise all contribute to increased risk.

Istre says regular screenings and lifestyle changes can dramatically improve long-term heart health.

High Blood Pressure. One of the most common silent conditions affecting men is high blood pressure, which often has no warning signs.

The American Heart Association estimates that nearly half of adults in the United States have the condition, yet many do not know they have it.

Left untreated, high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and heart failure. “Checking your blood pressure

regularly is one of the simplest things you can do for your long-term health,” Istre says.

Cancer. Cancer remains one of the leading health threats facing men, with several forms occurring more frequently in men than women. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men and often develops slowly with few early symptoms, making routine screenings and conversations with a healthcare provider especially important. Lung cancer also remains a major concern, particularly for current and former smokers, and continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in men. Colorectal cancer diagnoses have been rising in younger adults in recent years, reinforcing the importance of paying attention to digestive changes and staying current with recommended screenings.

Men are also at higher risk for cancers of the bladder, liver and pancreas, many of which can progress quietly before symptoms appear. Istre says early detection, healthy lifestyle choices and regular preventive care can significantly improve outcomes and survival rates.

Diabetes. More than 38 million Americans have diabetes, and men are slightly more likely than

women to develop Type 2 diabetes. The condition is especially concerning because many men remain undiagnosed for years due to mild or unnoticed symptoms. An estimated one in five adults with diabetes do not know they have it, increasing the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve problems and vision loss. “When diabetes is caught early, we can often prevent or delay serious complications through diet, exercise, weight management and medication if needed,” says Istre.

Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is commonly associated with women, but millions of men are also affected or at risk. Because bone loss develops gradually, many men are unaware they have osteoporosis until they experience a fracture.

“Being aware of risk factors and alert for even minor symptoms is key,” says Istre. “It’s also important to establish a relationship with a primary care provider to stay proactive about your health with regular exams and screenings.”

Testosterone: The Underrated Barometer of Men’s Health For Men’s Health Month, it is time to spotlight a hormone that influences nearly every aspect of a man’s well-being: testosterone.

While it is often reduced to stereotypes about masculinity or sexual performance, testosterone is far more complex and far more essential than most men realize.

What Is Testosterone?

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, produced mainly in the testes and to a lesser degree in the adrenal glands. It begins shaping the male body before birth, surges during puberty, and continues to influence physical, mental and metabolic health throughout adulthood.

Aquablation Therapy: An Advanced Treatment for Enlarged Prostate June is Men’s Health Month, a time to encourage men to pay attention to changes in their health and talk with a physician about symptoms they may be tempted to ignore.

For many men, that includes urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes more common with age. Men’s Health Matters: Bridging the Prevention Gap

When it comes to their health, many men still embrace the mindset that if nothing feels wrong, there’s no reason to see a doctor. Unfortunately, that approach often allows preventable health issues to go undetected until they become much more serious.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States continue to die at higher rates than women from the leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke. Men also continue to have a shorter average life expectancy than women (5 to 6 years shorter), due in part to delayed medical care and lower participation in preventive screenings.

“Men are still much less likely than women to seek routine preventive care,” says Dr. Brenton Smith, family medicine physician with Imperial Health. “Many men wait until symptoms interfere with their daily lives before they make an appointment, but by then, we’re often dealing with a more advanced condition that could have been managed much earlier.”

Routine preventive care plays a critical role in identifying health risks before they become major problems, and Dr. Smith says this is true for men and women. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and even some cancers may develop with few or no symptoms in the early stages.

The American Heart Association estimates that nearly half of adults in the United States have 18

high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Yet many people are unaware they have it. Similarly, the American Cancer Society continues to recommend regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 45 for average-risk adults, as rates of colorectal cancer among younger adults have increased in recent years.

Dr. Smith says annual wellness exams are one of the simplest and most effective ways for men to take control of their health.

“These visits are not just about treating illness,” he explains. “They help us establish a baseline for your health, identify risk factors early and create a plan to prevent future problems.”

Face Up to Look More Confident More men are investing in their appearance than ever before, and today’s cosmetic and skincare trends show that looking younger and healthier is no longer viewed as just a women’s market. From cosmetic injections and skincare treatments to eyelid surgery and laser procedures, men are increasingly seeking options that help them maintain a refreshed, confident appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men have 1.3 million cosmetic procedures annually, representing an increase of approximately 35% over the last decade.

Minimally invasive treatments such as Botox, fillers, laser treatments, skin resurfacing and eyelid surgery continue to drive much of that growth, with men now representing 8% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the United States.

“In the past, men were often much more reluctant to pursue cosmetic procedures,” says Dr. Mark Crawford, board certified oculoplastic

surgeon and medical director of the Aesthetic Center at The Eye Clinic. “Today, there’s far less stigma attached to wanting to look rested, healthy and energetic. Men are becoming more proactive about maintaining their appearance and overall skin health.”

Dr. Crawford says motivations among male patients are typically different than those of women. While some may simply want to look younger, many are more focused on maintaining confidence in their appearance in professional settings.

As the only oculoplastic surgeon in Southwest Louisiana, Dr. Crawford has specialized training in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery involving the eyelids and areas surrounding the eyes, as well as facial aesthetics and skin rejuvenation. He has 30 years of experience in cosmetic injections, including Botox and cosmetic fillers.

“I hear from a lot of men who feel like they want their appearance to reflect how active and capable they still feel,” Dr, Crawford explains.

“Most are not looking for dramatic changes. They want subtle improvements that help them look refreshed, not different.”

Non-surgical procedures remain especially popular because they typically involve little downtime.

Cosmetic injections, chemical peels, facials, laser treatments and medicalgrade skincare products allow patients to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles and address sun damage without major interruptions to work or daily life.

Advancements in surgical techniques have also made procedures such as eyelid lifts and brow lifts more appealing. These procedures target some of the earliest visible signs of

ERIC AVERY CRYING EAGLE BREWERY

by Katelynn Mouton Starting a business in the food and beverage industry is rarely a straight path. For the founder of Crying Eagle Brewing Company, the journey has been defined by hard-earned lessons, a steep learning curve and a commitment to building something bigger than a single moment of success.

Crying Eagle’s Eric Avery says the question he gets asked most often is his “why” behind opening the brewery.

Despite the challenges, he says early struggles became part of the foundation rather than setbacks.

“The answer is simple, and a bit cliché,” Eric says. “My answer’s always been to make a difference. If you’ve ever experienced a local brewery, you understand the profound impact it can have on a community.”

“I’d love to have gotten it all right from the beginning,” Eric explains. “But the mistakes and challenges helped build our story, added character and made us stronger.”

Eric points to the way breweries naturally build camaraderie, something he says few businesses are able to do at the same level.

What surprises many, however, is that brewing was never a lifelong ambition. “If you had asked me 15 years ago what my life would look like today, the last thing I would’ve said was owning a brewery,” he says.

Eric's unexpected path into the restaurant and brewing industry didn’t begin with a detailed roadmap, but rather a willingness to step into a complex and demanding industry.

“The biggest lesson was realizing how much you don’t know until you’re actually in it,” he says. “From operations and regulations to consistency day after day, there’s an incredible learning curve in this industry.”

Behind the atmosphere and experience is a constant balance of logistics, staffing, compliance and customer expectations.

In Louisiana, Eric adds, there is also the complexity of an often political beer industry.

Over time, Eric says success has been shaped less by single breakthroughs and more by consistency and culture.

“Team unity is everything,” he adds. “If your team isn’t aligned, it doesn’t matter how good your product is. You also need a strong, community-driven mission and kindness at the center of everything you do.”

To aspiring entrepreneurs, Eric’s advice is direct: do the work before you start.

“Do your due diligence, find a mentor and be prepared to work extremely hard,” he says.

“People often underestimate how demanding business ownership really is.”

And, on difficult days, Eric says this perspective is what helps keep him grounded.

“I treat them as God building me up to strengthen my character and force me to completely trust in Him.” When asked what’s next, Eric says his mind races with ideas for growth and expansion, but his focus has shifted toward longevity.

“I want to build a business that will last generations, not one that will be the next overnight sensation,” he says. ” We are building on a very strong foundation and my hope is that the community associates the Avery family name and the Crying Eagle brand with a level of trust.

by Kerry Andersen Kourtney Denison began her entrepreneurial journey as a creative outlet, helping loved ones celebrate important moments with beautiful flowers.

"One day, it was family and friends. The next, strangers were trusting me with the most important day of their lives and telling others to do the same,” she says. “Seeing the joy people had when they walked into a room I transformed made me realize that I could build a business around the hobby that I love, and KD Floral & Events was born.”

What makes Kourtney's founder's story compelling is that, while building her company, she was also a critical care nurse working in the ICU at a local hospital. She describes the decision to leave that career behind earlier this year as both difficult and defining. Yet, she discovered her two worlds weren’t that different. "Being a critical care nurse taught me how to stay calm under pressure, think quickly and care deeply for people,” she says. Those traits carried over to KD Floral & Events and help shape her work ethic and instinct for problemsolving.

As a self-taught floral designer, Kourtney says her biggest obstacle to success was finding confidence in herself and her work. She won a scholarship to train with a renowned florist in Maryland, and says the experience gave her the courage to move forward. "That’s when I realized people were hiring me for my creativity, my vision and the experience I brought to their events."

Behind the scenes, Kourtney says there’s often a big misconception about the floral and events industry. She says, “It’s so much more than just ‘playing with flowers.’ What people don’t see are the early mornings at wholesalers, late nights designing, long hours of installations, client meetings, budgeting, staffing and solving problems.”

Being a bride herself added an important perspective from the other side of the bouquet.

"It’s critical to feel heard and understood throughout the process because flowers

become part of the visual memories people carry forever," Kourtney says. "While choosing centerpieces and decor, couples are also creating a specific feeling for their wedding day."

Kourtney says the hardest part of running a small business in Lake Charles is navigating uncertainty. Hurricanes, economic ups and downs, and inevitable moments of self-doubt have tested her more than once. What keeps her going is community and consistency.

“Southwest Louisiana is a place where relationships matter. In Lake Charles, people truly rally around small businesses, and I've felt that support firsthand," she says.

Kourtney’s advice to young entrepreneurs is direct: stop waiting for perfection. "The opportunities I was hoping for were on the other side of simply believing I was capable of them. Consistency is non-negotiable; show up for your idea even when it is small, when no one is watching and, especially, when it’s not profitable yet. That's where most people quit. Protect your energy, because burnout doesn't build sustainable businesses. If you stay consistent long enough, you become someone who knows how to build things that last."

Calca Solutions Playing a Prominent Role in Aerospace When thinking about industry in Southwest Louisiana, many locals would be surprised to learn that space exploration would make the list, but Calca Solutions in Westlake, Louisiana, has a long history of reaching new heights in the aerospace industry. In fact, the hydrazine propellant manufactured at Calca Solutions has been used in some of the most inspiring missions in space, including the recent Artemis II’s mission to the moon!

Calca Solutions is a hydrazine manufacturing plant which has been in the area since 1953.

Some people may wonder . . . what is hydrazine?

The scientific formula for hydrazine is N2H4, and it is an inorganic compound that is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong ammonia-like odor and a density and appearance similar to water.

The plant produces both hydrazine solutions and propellants. The solutions produced are used in nuclear power plants, for water treatment, as intermediates for pharmaceuticals and in the agricultural industry for the synthesis of crop protection agents.

On the propellant side of the business, hydrazine is used in the thrusters of many of the highprofile projects by NASA, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, Mars Rovers and the Artemis II mission where with the thrusters were used to steer the Orion capsule and assist with attitude and orientation during critical phases, especially the reentry for the splash down landing.

Port Wonder Reef Located in Calcasieu Parish in Southwest Louisiana, the Port Wonder Reef will improve the easy-access fishing directly out the backdoor of Port Wonder. The reef shares its name with the new educational complex to reinforce the connection between habitat restoration in the water and conservation education on shore, where Louisiana families and students will learn about the coastal ecosystems this reef is helping to restore. CITGO has been deeply invested in the long term vision and success of Port Wonder, providing funding to support the construction of the facility, and hosting National STEM Day at the location to help broaden access to STEM learning opportunities for students.

Cutoff Point Reef Being constructed simultaneously, the Cutoff Point Reef will expand critical fish habitat in the northwest quadrant of Calcasieu Lake and create new opportunities for recreational anglers. Together with the Port Wonder Reef, it marks the latest expansion of the REEF Louisiana footprint in a year that has already seen significant habitat investment being made along our coast.

As water travels over the surface of land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial Contaminants - such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Inorganic Contaminants - such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial, or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Pesticides and Herbicides - which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

Organic Chemical Contaminants – including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, 32

urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems.

Radioactive Contaminants – which can be naturallyoccurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

A Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) is now available from our office. This plan is an assessment of a delineated area around our listed sources through which contaminants, if present, could migrate and reach our source water. It also includes an inventory of potential sources of contamination within the delineated area, and a determination of the water supply’s susceptibility to contamination by the identified potential sources. According to the Source Water Assessment Plan, our water system had a susceptibility rating of ‘MEDIUM’. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility.

There is no safe level of lead in drinking water.

Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups, especially pregnant people, infants (both formula-fed and breastfed), and young children. Some of the health effects to infants and children include decreases in IQ and attention span. Lead exposure can also result in new or worsened learning and behavior problems. The children of persons who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy may be at increased risk of these harmful health effects. Adults have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or nervous system problems. Contact your health care provider for more information about your risks.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals - Office of Public Health routinely monitors for constituents in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. The tables that follow show the results of our monitoring during the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2025. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The pre8ence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk.

In the tables below, you will find many terms and abbreviations you might not be familiar with. To help you better understand these terms, we’ve provided the following definitions: Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/L) – one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000.

Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter (ug/L) – one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000.

Picocuries per liter (pCi/L) – picocuries per liter is a measure of the radioactivity in water.

Treatment Technique (TT) – an enforceable procedure or level of technological performance which public water systems must follow to ensure control of a contaminant.

Action level (AL) – the concentration of a contaminant that, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow.

Maximum contaminant level (MCL) – the “Maximum Allowed” MCL is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCL’s are set as close to the MCLG’s as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

Maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) – the “Goal” is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to human health. MCLG’s allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum residual disinfectant level (MRDL) – The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants.

Maximum residual disinfectant level goal (MRDLG) – The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health.

MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants.

Level 1 assessment – A study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system.

Level 2 Assessment – A very detailed study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why an E. coli MCL violation has occurred and/or why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system on multiple occasions.

Our water system tested a minimum of 80 sample(s) per month in accordance with the Total Coliform Rule for microbiological contaminants. With the microbiological samples collected, the water system collects disinfectant residuals to ensure control of microbial growth.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. Less Tropical Development than Usual Expected for 2026 New Tech Provides More Accurate Forecasts

As we enter hurricane season, communities across the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard can feel uneasy.

Humans hate the unpredictable, and there’s not much predictability when it comes to the specifics on what will happen during hurricane season. For the last few years, we were warned of a bad season, only for there to be less storms to impact the United States, but it only takes one to devastate entire communities. Still, hurricane forecasts have their place. They take into account environmental conditions expected during the summer months which can hinder or help hurricane development.

State University (CSU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) call for a lower-than-average season. CSU’s prediction is 13 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes, while NOAA, which has the most updated forecast considering environmental conditions, expects between eight to 14 named storms, three to six hurricanes and one to three major hurricanes. Both forecasts expect generally the same amount of activity.

The questions are when the weather pattern flips to El Niño from its current neutral pattern, how soon this occurs, how strong El Niño becomes and how warm ocean temperatures are. El Niño favors less tropical activity in our area of the world due to wind shear but the effects will be opposite for those along the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, ocean temperatures are warmer than normal in parts of the Atlantic Ocean, so it’s undetermined how much of an impact that will have on development despite an El Niño pattern.

Another unknown in the forecast is the strength of El Niño. There are some predictions that a super El Niño event could form during hurricane season’s busiest months and last throughout the winter.

There are some changes and technological advancements to be implemented this year that will make hurricane forecasting more accurate. The cone of uncertainty is upgraded with warnings reaching inland areas and not just first landfall coastal area. For example, during Hurricane Laura, the storm left major destruction from the Louisiana coast into Arkansas. Similar

potential for effects inland will now appear in watches and warnings. In addition, tropical waves with little expectation of development will now feature on maps as a gray X instead of a yellow one.

Another interesting new development in forecasts this year is NOAA’S incorporation of data from Black Swift Technologies’ S0, a drone that will be deployed from the hurricane hunter plane. The drone will be able to get closer to the surface of the water to measure factors such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind and humidity levels. With the use of this new data, forecasts are expected to be anywhere from 1025% more accurate.

As always, stay weather aware despite this blanket forecast. What is most important is to stay tuned to regular tropical updates and warnings. There is no guarantee there won’t be a hurricane along the Gulf Coast this year—only the determination that storms will have more trouble forming.

Some hurricane names become infamous due to their destructive nature. In Louisiana, vivid memories come alongside the names of Audrey, Katrina, Laura and Rita. We often become fearful when a storm is named because that means it fits the criteria for at least some sort of destruction. But let’s take a little bit of that fear away by dedicating this year’s list of names to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Below, each person is someone of importance in the history of the United States.

ARTHUR Arthur Q. Davis— Part of the Curtis & Davis firm in New Orleans, popular for their midcentury architecture. He is credited for the Louisiana Superdome, the American embassy in Saigon, the Steglitz Medical Center in West Berlin and more.

DOLLY Dolly Parton—With her first album released in 1967, Dolly’s influence and popularity still continues to grow with a resume that includes acting, philanthropy and the creation of the park Dollywood.

BERTHA Bertha Heyman—Often referred to as “Big Bertha” or “Confidence Queen,” she was the original Anna Delvey.

She would defraud men whom she told the lie that she was a rich woman who unfortunately couldn’t access her money.

ÉDOUARD Édouard René de Laboulaye—A French citizen who was an antislavery abolitionist, Édouard is credited with the idea that led to France gifting the United States the Statue of Liberty.

CRISTÓBAL Cristóbal Colón—The official name of Christopher Columbus, Cristóbal has been widely considered the person who discovered America although historical accounts and evidence indicate otherwise. Regardless, after his repeated travels to the Americas and surrounding islands, other Europeans began exploring and moving to “the new world.”

FAY Fay Dunaway—First starring in Broadway productions, Fay would later become a big part of the movie industry, acting in a movie about the infamous duo Bonnie and Clyde.

MARCO Marco Rubio—The most meme-worthy Secretary of State in U.S. history, Marco has been an intermediary in many recent international conflicts.

He is the top polling Republican candidate for the next presidential election.

PAULETTE Paulette Goddard—An actress during Hollywood’s Golden Age, Paulette became one of Paramount Pictures’ biggest stars and married Charlie Chaplin.

TEDDY Teddy Roosevelt—The 26th president of the United States, Teddy is well-known for his actions concerning conservation. He created the National Park Service and hundreds of millions of acres of land became federally protected.

NANA Chief Nana—Nana, meaning grandma, was a warrior and chief of the Chihenne band of the Chiricahua Apache. A prominent figure in the Apache Wars, Nana fought against the Mexicans and, at times, Americans. (He was a male chief despite his name.)

RENÉ René Gagnon—René was involved in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was one of the men in the infamous picture who raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi.

Young Homeowners Fear Natural Disasters Most, Despite Preparation The increasing intensity and frequency of natural disasters can leave homeowners scrambling to protect their homes. From the Midwest's tornado alley to hurricane-prone coastal regions, severe weather is a growing concern. Hippo’s Financial Goals Report reflects this trend, identifying "home upgrades to prepare for severe weather" as a top financial priority for homeowners.

In their new survey of over 2,000 U.S. homeowners, Hippo uncovered surprising generational trends in disaster preparedness.

This active approach to prepping for disasters, along with their fears, shows a generational paradox: even though they are taking steps to prepare, younger homeowners still feel the most anxious about their home’s ability to withstand natural disasters.

This highlights a critical concern among younger homeowners, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, who tend to prioritize environmental issues. In fact, a Pew Research Center study shows that these generations are more engaged in addressing climate change compared to previous ones. Since climate change is known to exacerbate natural disasters, this heightened awareness and concern could explain their more proactive approach to disaster preparedness for their homes.

But these younger homeowners don’t stop at research. Sean Hager experienced a series of setbacks that led him to create an innovative dental care product. Sow Flow Toothpaste Tablets offer a brand new way to brush your teeth.

by Angie Kay Dilmore In 2020, Sean Hager was enjoying life as a campground host in the Ozark National Forest.

The campground closed that year due to COVID concerns, so in August he moved back home to Lake Charles. His plan was to train and hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Mexico to Canada with his dog, Treble. Hurricane Laura struck two weeks after he returned, destroying his home and possessions. Then the PCT closed due to COVID. So, Hager converted his vehicle into a camper van of sorts, and he and Treble set off on an adventure to see America. In May 2021, on a beautiful day in a Utah desert, an errant driver crossed the center line and crashed head-on into Hager’s car, severely injuring both him and Treble. “We almost lost our lives,” he says. After two weeks recovering in a hospital, they both returned home to Lake Charles to heal.

Seeking a new direction, Hager focused on his desire to create something unique and useful.

“I’ve always prioritized creativity. I believe that innovation is one of the highest forms of creation, to imagine something that doesn’t exist yet.”

He considered several different product ideas, but Hager’s lack of formal engineering training limited his options. Potentially inspired by his great-grandfather, who was a dentist, Hager landed on the idea of formulating a better toothpaste tablet as an alternative to toothpastes in traditional plastic tubes. As with most anything worth pursuing, the three-year process has presented challenges and details that Hager continues to work through.

The first year, he focused on market research: understanding the product, learning about the competition, the history of toothbrushing tablets and where they came from, and working to find investors.

Next came product development. Hager brought in a toothpaste formulator who helped him develop the structure of the tablet and determine the best ingredients for his

product. Sow Flow tablets contain no preservatives and no artificial dyes or sweeteners. Instead of fluoride, he added nano-hydroxyapatite to help prevent tooth decay.

Once he established the composition of the tablets, Hager bought a tablet compression machine. The first one didn’t work well and was impossible to fix, so he sourced a second machine. “I made thousands of tablet variations until I got something that was structurally sound, something that tasted and performed the way I wanted it to,” he says.

Hager gradually started putting his product out into the community, dipping his toes into the murky waters of marketing and looking for feedback.

Though there are other brands of tablets out there, he feels his product stands out. “I’m zeroing in on families and the challenges they often face getting kids to brush their teeth. I don’t see many tablets made specifically for kids.

The novelty of brushing with these tablets is exciting.” Hager is especially proud of his flavor profiles—Gumberry Twist is a fun strawberrylime bubblegum fusion. For adults, Cinna-Mintal is an explosion of cinnamon and peppermint.

Toothbrushing tablets also appeal to ecoconscious consumers. “It’s estimated that 400 million used toothpaste tubes are added to U.S. landfills every year,” Hager adds.

Financing is often a major hurdle for budding start-ups and Hager is no exception. He’s been working with Louisiana business incubators and continues to seek investors. Engineers, manufacturing, marketing and even the patent process are all significant expenses. But Hager

says he perseveres because he believes in his product. “Honestly, it’s a God thing. I feel there is a plan, and I have a responsibility to see this through. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me–my family, my girlfriend, my investors and to God for giving me this opportunity. We’ll see where it goes!”

From Classroom Concepts to Community Impact LSU Students Help Reimagine SWLA For the past four years, Just Imagine SWLA has worked to move the plan’s 11 catalytic projects from vision to reality through creative partnerships and community-driven planning.

One of the most impactful examples is the Urban Renewal Catalysts studio at Louisiana State University, where architecture and landscape architecture students apply their skills to realworld challenges facing Southwest Louisiana.

The partnership reflects one of the core values of the Just Imagine Plan: collaboration. By engaging students directly in community-based projects, the program helps advance local ideas while giving future architects and designers hands-on experience working alongside residents, civic leaders and stakeholders.

Funded through the National Academies of Sciences Gulf Research Program, the initiative has now completed its fourth year. During that time, students have explored five major Just Imagine SWLA catalytic projects, including the Bayou Greenbelt, Strong Downtowns, Mid-City Neighborhood Transformation, Strategies to Address Underutilized Property and Community Resilience Hubs.

The studio follows a collaborative structure that immerses students in both research and community engagement. The process began in January 2026 with presentations in Baton Rouge introducing students to the Just Imagine SWLA framework, along with the challenges and opportunities facing the region. Students then spent several weeks conducting background research and developing early concepts before traveling to Southwest Louisiana in March.

The field trip gave students a chance to experience the project areas firsthand. Local stakeholders joined the discussions, helping students better understand the history, existing conditions and community priorities connected

to each site. Students toured neighborhoods, reviewed infrastructure and gathered feedback on their preliminary ideas.

One highlight of the visit was a tour of the new emergency operations center in Cameron Parish, led by Porche May Architecture. The facility, which is expected to open soon, provided students with a powerful example of how resilient design can support communities preparing for future storms and disasters. The visit reinforced many themes students were exploring in their own projects, especially the importance of planning with long-term resilience in mind.

In April, community stakeholders traveled to LSU to participate in final project reviews. They

offered direct feedback on student proposals and discussed how ideas from the studio could help inform and influence future planning efforts in Southwest Louisiana.

According to program director and faculty advisor Fabio Capra-Ribeiro, the collaboration has created meaningful learning experiences for everyone involved.

“Working alongside the Lake Charles community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time at LSU,” he said. “Our students learn things in this studio that no classroom alone can teach them, and I am grateful for every partner who makes that possible.”

The partnership also leaves a lasting impression on students. Jessica Peres, a second-year student from Brazil, reflected on how the experience changed her understanding of architecture.

“During this studio in Lake Charles, I learned that architecture is not only about buildings but also about people and the environment,” she said.

“Working on my project, the Amphibious Hub, helped me understand how design can respond to flooding in a different way. Instead of trying to fight the water, I learned that we can design spaces that work with it. This changed the way I see architecture and resilience.”

As Just Imagine SWLA continues moving projects forward, partnerships like this show the value

of bringing communities, universities and local leaders together. By combining fresh ideas with local knowledge, the program is helping prepare the next generation of designers while building momentum for a stronger Southwest Louisiana.

Stellar Beans is the downtown coffee shop all the locals know. It’s a hub of fellowship, good grinds and art. Chelsea and Carl Boudreaux are the lovely couple who own and run the place. Now, after years of collecting the communal journals set out from visitors to write in, they have paired with local author R.S. Blackburn to create three coffee table books. The first book will first introduce the history of Stellar Beans and the Stellar Beans public and private art collection. Then it will transition into a tribute to the poets, authors and other artists who have passed through the Lake Area. R.S. Blackburn says the journals are “almost like a social study. A companion journal will also be released, giving people a place to document their own thoughts, ideas, inspirations, disappointments, hopes and experiences—whether at home or while sitting in their favorite corner of the coffee shop. Evergreen Life Services of Southwest Louisiana was founded in 1989 with the aim to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities navigate life challenges so these valuable members of our community can thrive. Rosa Alfred is the director of development and has been in the role for three years but has a total of 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Below Alfred shares insight into Evergreen’s mission.

It’s a lifelong commitment to the individuals we serve. Many may not realize that our work extends beyond day-to-day support. We are dedicated to fostering independence, growth and community for every individual for their entire lifetime. Evergreen Life Services has been an integral part of our community for decades. We operate 15 homes serving individuals with disabilities, ranging from Lake Charles to Vinton and Sulphur. riley, 13 years old Riley is a thoughtful and creative 13‑year‑old who’s looking for someone to talk to, hang out with, and help her feel more confident in social situations. She hopes having a Big Sister will help her manage anxiety and give her a positive role model to connect with. School is a safe and happy place for Riley. She’s in 8th grade and loves math, though social studies isn’t her favorite.

She appreciates teachers who are easy to talk to and believes education is important for her future. In her free time, Riley loves making bracelets — she even sells them — and dreams of becoming a makeup artist one day. She’s learning Korean, loves animals, and enjoys K‑pop. She says the best thing that ever happened to her was making friends, and she wishes she were better at expressing her emotions. Riley hopes for a Big Sister who’s kind, outdoorsy, and shares some of her interests. She’d love to walk, bake, craft, talk, and build a meaningful connection. McNeese’s CARE program (Connect Accelerate Retrain Engage) celebrated another successful year at the annual awards ceremony. CARE provides students with on-campus mentors who are faculty and staff members who have a passion to assist in the development of others. The CARE mentorship program is continually shaping student success through each mentor-mentee connection. As the creator of this program in 2015, I am a proud mentor because I understand the importance of McNeese students having one-on-one relationships with on-campus role models.

Dr. Monica Orsot is the new executive director of McNeese’s Office of Enrollment Management. Recently, she held the director of advising,

retention and advanced placement position in the Office of Enrollment Management.

Dr. Orsot has been a rising leader at McNeese for the last couple of years. She is well respected by the employees in enrollment management and colleagues throughout the campus. It’s beneficial to have her step into the executive director of enrollment management role because she brings a structured and creative vision for leading the operation. Dr. Orsot’s years of experience as the department head for academic advising, connections she has to other campus divisions, the recent completion of her doctorate and other professional development experiences position her well for an

elevated leadership role.

We hosted the Southland Conference championship series for softball and I am proud of our campus community as we came together to support our softball program, and we are proud of our McNeese Cowgirl softball team for advancing into post-season play!

McNeese Speech and Debate Team Wins National Award McNeese State University’s Speech and Debate Team won third place in the National Forensic Association (NFA) National Championship Tournament in President’s Division III. The tournament took place in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 16-20.

Jacob St. Mary and Caleb Wilson

In one of the most competitive speech and debate tournaments in the nation, the President’s Division III is for schools with up to 13 entries at the tournament and McNeese brought five.

McNeese students Caleb Wilson, a senior psychology major from Iowa, and Jacob St. Mary, a junior psychology major from Lake Charles, competed at the tournament. Wilson reached the semifinals in dramatic interpretation and the quarterfinals in prose interpretation and he competed in rhetorical criticism.

St. Mary competed in impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking.

McNeese McNeese’s Family Science Concentration Announces the Reapproved by NCFR 2026 Spring Court McNeese State University’s bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in family science curriculum has been reapproved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Family science graduates will continue to be eligible for the Certified Family Life Educator professional certification without having to take the exam or complete extra coursework.

This professional credential is recognized throughout the U.S. and Canada and provides an advantage when McNeese graduates are seeking jobs in family life education and related

fields, according to Dr. Ilya A. Okhotnikov, assistant professor of family science.

Family science is the area of social science that focuses on the development, conflict management and formation and maintenance of relationships, especially in the family setting.

Students majoring in family science learn the skills needed to help families— including nuclear, singleparent, childless, extended and more—develop and grow in a variety of circumstances and settings.

This degree is offered 100% online.

McNeese State University announces Lianne Montelibano, a biological science major from Moss Bluff, as Ms. McNeese, and Omari Francis, a finance major from Lafayette, as Mr. McNeese for Spring Court 2026.

Montelibano is the president of the Student Government Association (SGA), the student advisory council chair of the University of Louisiana System, the president of PrePharmacy Society, the vice president of Health Occupations Students of America, the past president of the Speech and Debate team, chairperson for the Technology Advancement of Students Committee and a Rowdy Rider. She was named Krewe De Rowdy Mardi Gras Queen and is a member of the Biology Club and the Round Up Student Leadership Academy.

In 2017, I lost my dad, Shea, after more than two decades of medical struggles. Losing him left a hole that I carried with me when I made the decision, just two years later, to start over somewhere new. I moved to Lake Charles in 2019 to join Visit Lake Charles, as Kyle Edmiston’s very first hire as CEO. I didn’t know it then, but I wasn’t just beginning a career chapter. I was finding something I hadn’t expected to find again.

Kyle is, without question, a remarkable leader and a visionary CEO. Over these seven years, Kyle has become a father figure to me in every sense of the word. He has taught me practical life lessons that have nothing to do with job descriptions or performance reviews. Like how to navigate hardship, how to carry yourself, how to keep showing up. He championed me when I decided to pursue my master’s degree (and many other lofty goals of mine), offering not just encouragement but a genuine belief that makes you think maybe you actually can achieve anything.

Kyle has always been curious about who I am outside of work, including my passion for music and photography, and that curiosity has never felt performative. It has felt like care. The kind of care that sees a whole person, not just an employee.

And beyond all of that, Kyle has welcomed me into his own family. His wife Leslye, their children Kathryn and Parker, Kathryn’s husband Hunter, and now their daughter, Maryn, have all become a part of my life.

What means the most to me is this: I know that Kyle’s investment in me is not conditional on my title or tenure.

Whatever comes next, wherever life takes me beyond Visit Lake Charles and beyond this city, I know he will still be in my corner. That kind of presence, that kind of loyalty, is what fathers give their children. It is what he has given me.

I am grateful every day for the unexpected gift of landing in Lake Charles, and for the man who welcomed me here as family. Happy Father’s Day, Kyle.

I have known David for over three years. When I met David, he was spearheading the purchase and development of the Second Harvest warehouse. Through the years, David has brought so much attention and energy to the Lake Charles region about the hunger crisis we face. David has been the primary leader to a multitude of community events, all aimed toward fighting hunger for Second Harvest, including golf tournaments and holiday feeding programs.

As a person, David is a joy to be around. He speaks positively and passionately about everything he is involved with. I’ve personally watched him soar in Fusion Five, on the board of ABC pregnancy and also in the 2025 leadership class. David has dabbled in ministry and has spoken to congregations. He is deeply driven by servanthood.

Why I think David is an amazing father is because I was around him when his wife was about to deliver his first-born son. David has always made sure that his focus remains on Jesus and protecting his family. It was during that season where I was able to witness this firsthand.

David took paternity leave during his wife’s delivery so he could be of support stay and connect with his son. He drew a firm boundary around his family and let everyone know about it. Leading up to her delivery, he told everyone within his network how important it was for him to unplug from others and work so he could fully plug into his family.

I remember begging David for pictures of his new baby and he directly told me that his focus was on preserving his family in their sacred time and space. I was moved by the power in that statement. He really did it too. David did not post pictures of his child until the baby was a year old.

I recently asked David to tell me about any special rituals he does with his children. Outside of the weekly daddy daughter ice cream run, David spends time not only praying with and over his family but also practices daily affirmations with his children each morning on the way to school. They also watch him speak affirmations over himself. He coaches the sports, he does the hair, he does school pickup and drop off . . . . He is in a true partnership within his family and eagerly takes a strong & conscious role in his kid’s lives every day.

For Owen, leadership has never been about recognition or titles, it has always been about people. Whether he is serving his family, mentoring students, encouraging coworkers or helping someone discover their potential, Owen has dedicated his life to pouring into others and helping them become the best versions of themselves. His life is rooted deeply in his Catholic faith, a faith that guides the way he loves, leads, serves and gives of himself so freely to those around him.

As a husband and father, Owen is the steady foundation of his family. He leads with strength, humility, compassion and dedication. He is the kind of father who is fully present, encouraging their children, teaching them through both words and actions, and showing them what it means to live a life of integrity, kindness and purpose. He loves deeply, sacrifices willingly, consistently puts his family first and happily cooks breakfast most mornings.

More than anything, Owen loves being a dad. It is one of the greatest joys and most important callings in his life. No matter how busy life gets, he always shows up for his children, supporting them, celebrating them and making them feel seen and valued. One of his greatest goals is not only to be a good father and husband but to model for his children what faithful, present and selfless leadership in a family looks like through his everyday actions.

Understanding the importance of intentional fatherhood, the impact a present dad can have on a family, and the many hats dads juggle, Owen felt called to write a devotional for fathers titled Foundations of Fatherhood. Through it, he hopes to encourage other dads to lead their families with faith, love, purpose and consistency.

For the last 20 years, Owen faithfully served the Calcasieu Parish School Board, dedicating his career to education and the growth of students and educators throughout the community. His passion has always extended far beyond the job itself. He genuinely cares about people and believes in investing in others so they can succeed and thrive.

Now, serving as the director of advancement at St. Louis Catholic High School, Owen has found tremendous joy in returning to a campus environment and immersing himself in the lives of students once again. Being surrounded by young people energizes him, and he embraces every opportunity to encourage, mentor and support them. He believes strongly in helping students recognize their God-given gifts and inspiring them to use those gifts to make a difference in the world.

One of Owen’s greatest strengths is his commitment to continuous learning and personal growth. He is constantly reading, learning, reflecting and sharing wisdom with others. He challenges those around him to grow spiritually, personally and professionally while always offering encouragement and support along the way. What makes Owen truly special is his servant’s heart. He gives freely of his time, energy and talents without ever expecting recognition in return. He quietly shows up for people, supports and celebrates.

To his family and to this community, Owen is far more than a devoted husband, father, mentor, and leader. He is a living example of faith in action. His impact is felt not only in the work he does, but in the countless lives he has touched simply by caring deeply and loving others.

Home & Family | FATHER'S DAY SPOTLIGHT To his patients across Southwest Louisiana, Dr. Tyson Green is the foot and ankle surgeon who gets people back on their feet. But anyone who knows him will tell you his greatest role has nothing to do with the operating room. Dr. Green and his wife Hillary are parents to four children: Jackson, 20, Finley, 15, Abram, 14, and Kiki, 9, and that is where his heart lives. A devoted husband, father, teacher, and coach, he approaches family with the same dedication he brings to his patients. Ahead of Father's Day, Thrive spoke with Dr. Green about balancing a demanding career with a busy family life, the lessons fatherhood has taught him, and the values he hopes his children carry long after they've left home.

How did your own father influence the way you parent?

Were there any other father figures in your life who made a lasting impact?

I had the best dad you could hope for; He would do anything for anyone. He was very service oriented, both in his career, first as a Marine, and then in the air business with UPS. My dad showed me how to work hard for what matters and, above all, to be a good person. If you do that, the rest of your life will fall into place. My residency director, Dr. Douglas Murdoch, was a role model who shaped both the doctor and the father I am today. By example he showed me that success and family are not competing priorities. When you see someone live that balance, you realize you can choose to do it too.

How did becoming a father change your perspective on life and success?

It changed everything! Success became about being the best father and husband I could be, with family my top priority. Everything else – work, the teaching, the coaching, the healthcare advocacy – exists in service of that role, not in competition with it. I feel that clarity also makes me better at my job, because when you know why you're working, the work takes on a deeper meaning.

What is one lesson fatherhood has taught you?

To recognize how each child is different. Early on, you might assume your job as a parent is to shape your children toward some vision you have of who they should become, but letting them be

different isn't just okay – it’s actually the most amazing part of raising kids. Watching them discover and become who they are meant to be is something you can't put into words. Our job is to introduce them to different things and let them find what connects. I’ve got four who all have completely unique personalities and talents.

Jackson is intensely studious and analytical, and is now putting that mind to work at RIT in Rochester, NY. Finley is quite gifted physically with everything he does, however, he has found his calling in music, exploring instruments (especially drums), producing, and performing with a passion that lights up a stage. Abram is a natural athlete who is working his way through multiple sports, with an intense passion for basketball. And then there's Kiki, the youngest, who is still joyfully exploring her options by excelling at everything her brothers do.

Are there similarities between being a doctor and being a parent?

The parallels are impossible to ignore. Listening, guiding, teaching, meeting people where they are – are a big part of both. You have to be able to recognize the frustration and realize that beneath the frustration is almost always fear, confusion and the need to feel heard. In medicine and in parenting, how you respond to that moment matters more than you think. I am forever advocating for diabetes awareness and patients’ rights, whether its locally or in Washington DC. I defend that just as strongly as I would issues that could affect my family.

Your three sons came first – how has fatherhood been different with your daughter?

Hillary and I thought our family might be complete after the three boys. But something kept nudging me. I’d watch friends with little girls. And then I went to a wedding and watched a father walk his daughter down the aisle and thought, “I want that moment.” We began the foster to adoption process to find our daughter.

And when Kiki came into our lives, we knew we had made the right decision. From the first moment I held her, there was no way they were ever going to take her away. I love getting to do the more girly things with her, like daddydaughter trips with her to Disney World dressed as her favorite characters (I really do make a great Prince Naveen) or cozying up on the couch watching our favorite movies.

What is the most rewarding part of being a father?

It’s not the trophies or the grades or the milestones, as proud as that makes me. The moments that stop me in my tracks are seeing the right choice made when no one is watching.

Hearing about the unprompted kindness or the uncompromising defense of social injustice. That glimpse of character in my kids tells me the values Hillary and I are working to teach them are taking root.

What’s the most challenging part?

Watching them fail or be hurt. But protecting them from disappointment would be a greater disservice. There are too many times in life that things aren't going to go right. It’s not my job to erase the problem, but I’ll always be a steady voice of support and encouragement as they solve it.

young men who went through personal loss as well as struggles on the field, making them believe in themselves first, then in their ability to win it all, was more rewarding than anything I ever felt as a player When the opportunity to teach at McNeese came up, I didn’t think I could fit that in. But I really wanted to do it, so I adjusted my surgery schedule two mornings a week. I’m able to give these students some real-world insight into sports injuries and opportunities in the medical field, I’ve taught for almost 20 semesters and love every minute of it. I run into former students who are working in the healthcare field, and knowing my class had even a small role in their journey is incredibly fulfilling. I also get a front row seat to the best teacher I have ever known in my wife.

The way she continues to be innovative and constantly change her methods makes me want to be a better educator.

How do you balance the responsibilities of your medical practice with being a father? I get

that question a lot, but here's what I keep coming back to: I only take on things I really love. As long as I'm doing that, why would I give them up? If it were overwhelming, if I were missing things that mattered, I wouldn't do it. I’d adjust. Sure, there are times it’s challenging to juggle it all, but I think it’s beneficial for my kids to see me find a way to make it all work, and to involve them in figuring it all out, with family always as the priority. Having my biggest fan by my side for almost 23 years now helps quite a bit too.

You founded a residency program, teach a course at McNeese and coach a high school soccer team. How do these roles tap into your “father” skills?

If you could give your pre-fatherhood self one piece of advice, what would it be? Don't wish a single day away, even the hard ones. Never go to bed thinking there’s always tomorrow. That’s not promised. It all flies by so fast. Enjoy every minute you have with your kids.

The residency program grew out of a dream of being a high school chemistry teacher I never quite let go of. It’s such a privilege to guide these young doctors for three years. They come in somewhat uncertain of themselves, and my job is to help shape not just their skills, but their confidence. That feels very much like parenting to me. Our 9th resident will graduate this year and I’m still very close with every one of them. They are family.

What is one thing you hope your children will always remember about you?

I’m a lifelong soccer player who competed all the way into college, and I started coaching my kids’ soccer teams because I felt like I had something to offer. Then I was asked to be an assistant soccer coach at St. Louis High School and said yes. What I did not expect was how much this coaching experience would give back. Taking a group of

That they mattered the most. That I was actively present in their lives, not because I had to be, but because I wanted to be. I like to think – I hope – I am giving my kids a good example of how to create a life they love, one full of people they love and things they love to do.

relieving time outdoors. It creates the chance for hands-on work with visible before-and-after results. It also teaches mindfulness, patience and problem-solving. Research indicates approximately 40% of U.S. gardeners are men, and 55% of them specifically focus on cultivating vegetables.

Thrive found three such men who are each in different stages of their vegetable gardening experience. But, there was one thing they all had in common—they all like to EAT what they sow!

1 I’ve been gardening most of my life. I started around age five helping my grandfather in his garden, and later spent years helping my dad with his gardens as well. I planted my first garden of my own in 1990, so gardening has been part of my life for decades. It’s become something that connects generations of our family.

For this current garden, the biggest challenge was preparation. I constructed it in fall 2025 and focused heavily on soil preparation before planting.

This spring I installed weed barrier fabric and an automatic drip tape irrigation system. Putting in the groundwork early has made managing the garden much easier.

2 Good food! The biggest reward is watching something grow from seed to harvest and seeing the results of your work. Gardening is also relaxing and a great way to disconnect from everyday stress. I enjoy being outdoors, learning something every season and sharing fresh vegetables with family and friends. There’s also a lot of satisfaction in walking out to your garden and picking vegetables you grew yourself.

4 That’s hard to narrow down because I enjoy growing a variety of vegetables, but tomatoes are probably at the top of the list. I enjoy seeing large healthy plants loaded with fruit. I also enjoy growing cucumbers on arches and trellises because they create a unique look in the garden and make harvesting easier. Sweet corn is another favorite because there’s nothing better than fresh-picked corn.

3 The easiest part is the enjoyment that comes from it—planting, watching things develop and seeing progress every day. The hardest part is managing everything nature throws at you: weather, heat, insects, disease pressure and timing. Living in south Louisiana means you’re always working around humidity, wind and changing conditions.

Every season teaches you something new.

5 We use a lot of it fresh at home, and there’s always plenty to share with family and friends. One of the best parts of gardening is having more than enough to give away. Seeing people enjoy fresh vegetables straight from the garden is part of the reward.

2 Good food! I do it because I like to eat and I like to cook. It's hard to beat fresh produce. Plus, I know where it is from and I know how it was grown. I don't use any chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.

5 I typically use the harvest in home-cooked meals and enjoy it fresh when possible. I also freeze some of the excess to use throughout the year and enjoy sharing extra produce with family and friends.

3 The easiest part about growing vegetables has been the enjoyment of watching them grow and getting the kids involved in the process. The hardest part is keeping up with watering, pests and unpredictable SWLA weather while trying to keep the plants healthy throughout the season.

1 Started back in Indiana when I was an elementary school kid helping my mom in her garden. It just kind of "grew" on me! Once I was old enough to acquire my own land, I started my own garden.

I've had one ever since.

4 I enjoy growing tomatoes because they’re relatively easy to maintain, produce a lot throughout the season and taste much better fresh from the garden.

3 Plants aren't created equal. Some are easier to grow than others, at least for me! I am not, by any means, a master gardener. Some stuff I can't grow that well. I've never had much luck with green beans of all things. They seem so easy for most

everyone else, but not me! Peppers, I can grow some peppers. And tomatoes! Those two are by far the easiest for me to grow.

4 That's a tough one! However, I really look forward to that first fresh tomato sandwich every year!

And if I had only one vegetable to grow it would definitely be tomatoes. I only grow Better Boys.

I know there are others, but that's what my mom always grew, and they grow best for me.

5 Eat! That's what it's for! Either fresh or jarred.

We eat a lot of pickled jalapenos in our home so I'm always pickling them among other peppers. I make my own tomato sauce and strawberry jam. I love to cook and feed folks so it's all just a good time for me!

Prepared for Success: Women In Industry Event Highlights Career Opportunities For the third year, high school seniors from across Southwest Louisiana gathered at the West Cal Event Center for the Lake Area Industry Alliance’s (LAIA) Women In Industry event.

Held each year in March, the program connects young women with successful female leaders in traditionally male-dominated fields, offers realworld exposure to local STEM fields, resources, role-models, networking and career guidance.

“Our Women In Industry event is part of an ongoing effort to develop the local workforce,” says Jim Rock, LAIA executive director. “By giving students an opportunity to learn more about the variety of career options available, we are building the next generation of leaders who will continue to strengthen SWLA’s industries.”

The event featured interactive sessions with over 70 women working in engineering, human resources, accounting, laboratory sciences, communication and business management from LAIA member companies. Students are invited to practice their interviewing skills and have their

resume reviewed by industry professionals and receive a professional headshot to use with their professional portfolios.

Representatives from McNeese State University and SOWELA Technical Community College were also on hand to discuss degree programs and technical training for students interested in industrial careers. The Louisiana Chemical Association and the Louisiana Chemical Industry Alliance also helped students connect the success of SWLA industries to the state at large and across the globe.

“My interest in chemical engineering comes from watching my dad in his job,” says Natalie Obluda, a graduate of St. Louis Catholic High School.

“However, this event has introduced me to other branches of engineering. My entire family is employed through industry and I’ve learned a lot from them, but this experience has given me new perspectives to consider for my own career path.”

Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, 19 students received $750 scholarships to use towards their higher education pursuit in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields.

“The Women In Industry event really opened my eyes to all of the career paths available in our local refineries,” says Sydni Boudreaux, a scholarship recipient and graduate of Hackberry High School. “From engineers to nurses, there’s a role for everyone to play.”

Male Grooming Steps to Take Before a Night Out

Business is booming for men’s grooming tools and products.

With increased awareness of skincare, beard maintenance and even makeup, profits are soaring across the board. Men are influenced by social media as much as women are and are also are acting on suggestions given by the women in their lives. This trend is even more obvious in large cities where the work and dating environments are more competitive.

As the art of dressing up has declined over the years, so has the prevalence of fine-tuned grooming in the United States. (Asia is a completely different market.) In fact, grooming has consisted of using disposable razors and a bit of aftershave for many men. With a little more effort and time, you can have glowing skin that makes your date take notice.

If a man doesn’t know where to start with skincare, there are some drugstore brands tailored to men. If wanting a step up, department stores carry higher quality products and aesthetic businesses in SWLA can offer top of the line products for specific skin concerns. There are an increasing number of professional barbers offering grooming products, such as beard oil or hair gels, and showing customers how to use them.

There are products you probably don’t even know exist, such hair powder to increase the look of the hair where there is thinness. It volumizes hair strands so they can expand and give the illusion of a full head of hair. Follow up with a small amount of a styling product, such as hair styling cream.

Simple tricks to depuff the face before an event include avoiding alcohol and high salt foods and using tools to increase blood flow to the skin.

Tools don’t have to be expensive either. Purchase a simple gua sha tool in which to massage the face or use ice rollers. A gua sha is best used with a facial oil or serum so the tool doesn’t pull the skin. There are videos on social media on how to use the different edges on various parts of the face for lymphatic drainage. Ice rollers reduce puffiness fast. The temperature difference causes blood vessels to constrict, which reduces swelling and the rolling motion will drain fluid from the face.

Regular exfoliation will prevent ingrown hairs and keep the surface of the skin smoother, which is good for both you and your date, and beard oil will soften facial hair so it isn’t as coarse. Use a lip scrub

and apply some lip balm for smooth skin and hydration.

Make sure your nails are in order. If you worked a long day outside or in industry, make sure there’s no dirt left on your fingers, nailbeds or under the nail. Ensure nails are groomed and not too long.

You don’t want to be rivaling your girlfriend or wife in nail length.

It’s the small changes which make a big difference. It doesn’t necessarily take a huge amount of time or investment to start lookin your best. People will take notice and you’ll feel more confident and comfortable in your skin.
