New Year, New Flavors

Southwest Louisiana is famous for its Cajun food, but we also boast a variety of international food restaurants that serve up sizzling eats based on classics from around the world. The following list introduces a few new players in the local food scene while bringing attention to a few outside the Lake Charles area you may not have heard of.

Habibi Greek & Lebanese 'Habibi' is the Arabic word for ‘my love,’ and there’s a lot to love about the cuisine at 3625 Nelson Road. While Lake Charles has a variety of Greek and Lebanese restaurants, Habibis is another excellent addition to the selection, bringing its own spin on classic staples. Offering shawarma, gyro, kibbi and grape leaves like other competitors, a few stars of the menu are the Fried Halloumi Cheese and Mediterranean Hummus. With a wide range of salads, there is something for those who are on a low calorie or low carb diet for the new year.

Tokyo Lake Charles The first of its kind in the area, Tokyo, 5675 Nelson Road, offers hot pot, a popular Chinese customizable soup experience. They also offer an AYCE, All-You-Can-Eat menu for a fixed price. However, you must eat all of your food without sharing with others at the table or else you will be charged a waste fee. In addition to hot pot, find an extensive list of sushi and hibachi options. A new menu item is Black Beef Tripe. Appetizers include kimchi and sesame balls.

Seasonal drinks are available.

Orinico Restaurant Orinico is a woman-owned business, 4723 Common St., specializing in Venezuelan and Colombian food. Oven Baked Pork Belly and Caribbean Red Snapper accompany staples such as empanadas.

Grab their Sweet Plantains for a treat and a fresh juice or mocktail to wash it down. A new menu has been available for a couple months, so check out Orinico’s new tasty offerings!

Budatan Asian Cuisine Budatan, 290 Parish Road in Moss Bluff, has an extensive menu of foods ranging from Thai to Chinese to Vietnamese. Opened by the former owner of Jojo’s Chinese Bistro in Lake Charles, Budatan stands out for a well-thoughtout menu and the overall excellence of the food. Choices range from a whole page of sushi rolls to a whole page of chicken entrees. Their pad Thai is a favorite. If you love spice, try their Jalapeno Bombs. Then stay for a Vietnamese iced coffee.

The Jamaican Spot At 1507 S. 5th St. in Leesville lies The Jamaican Spot. Jamaica has a rich culinary tradition, which is reflected in The Jamaican Spot’s menu. Get a taste of the Jamaican Goat Soup and an Island Bowl, full of fried plantains, steamed cabbage, glazed chicken and rice. Other standouts include Jamaican Stewed Peas with red beans and coconut gravy. A wide variety of island juices are available to accompany. (The restaurant has also sent supplies to Jamaica following the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa’s landfall in October.)

Raja’s Curry Kitchen & Grill In the mood for Indian food? Raja’s Curry Kitchen & Grill, 3821 Ryan St., has all your favorite spices. Popular items include Chicken Biryani, Butter Chicken, and Gobi Curry. If you’re craving curry something fierce, Raja’s has a dozen variations to choose from. They also offer lassi, a yogurtbased drink.

If craving German food, cross right over the state line into Vidor, Texas, and visit Schnitzel at 950 S. Coffee: 30

Expands their Vision

Some say, it’s all in the timing.

Some say, it’s the right opportunity.

Usually, it’s a mix of both.

Coffee:30 put in the time, and over the course of the past five years, put in the work. In doing so, they grew enough to open a second location.

But there was still more to come.

Then came opportunity.

“We had just started actively hunting for a new space, but when this location became available, it immediately felt like the right next step,” owner Joshua Smith says, in reference to the abrupt departure of Salt Revival Oyster Co. from 3420 Ryan Street back in October.

“Coffee:30 had outgrown its original home— not just in volume but in vision,” Smith continues. “We saw an opportunity to build the café we always imagined with more room, more hospitality and more ways to serve our community, all without losing what makes Coffee:30 special in the first place.”

The result is the next evolution of Coffee:30, which Smith describes as a “true gathering space.” Not only is there considerably

more room for guests than before, but the added space has allowed for other upgrades, such as a full bar and an area for live music. With specialty cocktails and an expanded menu, Coffee:30 is more than ready to handle your brunch party.

Speaking of brunch, Coffee:30 was already known for their lavish breakfast creations, chicken and waffles, and beignets, but with the expanded menu, they’ve added items such as the Ribeye Steak and Eggs, Shrimp & Grits, and the Centennial Smash Burger.

The addition of the full bar has been a “gamechanger,” according to Smith. From mimosas to bloody marys to espresso martinis, Coffee:30 now handcrafts unique cocktails that stand on their own or perfectly

pair with brunch, which is exciting, because as Smith points out, “Specialty coffees and signature drinks are at the core of everything we do.”

With only a month in the new location, the support from the community has been humbling, according to Smith. Not only have Coffee:30’s regulars found their way to the new location, but the number of first-time guests has been incredible. “This café isn’t just ours. It belongs to the community, and that support reinforces why we do what we do every day.”

s ' 0 5 19 Cotten’s Downtown Adds Ice Cream to Menu

Cotten’s Downtown was opened in 2014 by Kate Cotten, whose last name has become synonymous with some of the best burgers around. The restaurant

has a retro diner vibe unlike anywhere else in the area. You can sit at the bar right across from beef patties sizzling on the grill or in a booth next to a wall covered in family pictures, newspaper ads from a 1957 American Press that was found between the wall and booth when remodeling, local art and quirky prints. A favorite is the Tiffany cat print Cotten purchased on clearance at Kirkland’s.

When Subway decided to close, Cotten received a call from her landlord asking if she would like to lease that space as well. It had long been in her mind that she would like to have the suite next door. If nothing else, she would have more, much-needed seating. She had ideas too. Many ideas. She considered putting a bar in but realized she didn’t want to deal with those who got drunk. (Cotten’s Downtown is the only restaurant that doesn’t sell liquor in the area.) She also didn’t want to proceed with an idea that would require the need for extra kitchen space.

Cotten settled on an ice cream parlor, connected to the burger joint through an open doorway and under the umbrella of Cotten’s Downtown. Subway wallpaper was replaced with green paint. The tables are the old Subway tables, the chairs she bought from Bam Arceneaux before painting them green, and the ice cream freezer is also green. While not the exact shade as the green in the original space, it is close enough for the two rooms to feel in harmony with each other.

The addition of the ice cream shop completes the nostalgic picture of stepping back in time when it was common to sit down with a soda, some ice cream and a good burger on a regular basis. And adding on is less risky than starting a separate business. “You have to sell a lot of ice cream to only sell ice cream,” Cotten says.

There are a dozen ice cream flavors to choose from, including two dairy-free options and flavors like cotton candy for the kids. Cotten says people have been especially excited to hear they carry malts, as they are hard to find here. Business has been good, with a number of returning customers, including children, and Cotten hopes to have everything in full swing by summer. “I still have people coming in and asking for a sub sandwich,” Cotten says with a smile. (The Subway sign was still up at the time of this interview with plans to replace it soon.)

When asked how she wants people to think of Cotten’s Downtown, Cotten says, “It’s small batch over here. We do breakfast.

Now, ice cream. It’s nostalgic. I see kids eat burgers at the bar and watch them grow up.

You come into Cotten’s and leave smelling like it. It’s the best advertisement.”

Cotten’s Downtown is open MondaySaturday, 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Burgers will stop at 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Reflecting on Progress, Looking Ahead with Purpose As Southwest Louisiana continues to experience growth and change, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (WCCH) remains focused on strengthening access to high-quality, patient-centered healthcare close to home. The new system allows providers to make quicker, more confident diagnoses, improving care coordination and treatment planning. The uCT Atlas CT Scanner is located in the WCCH Sulphur Diagnostic Center at 250 S. Beglis Parkway in Sulphur.

In addition to clinical and technology upgrades, WCCH achieved Joint Commission reaccreditation in the fall of 2025, reaffirming its adherence to rigorous national standards for patient safety, quality and operational excellence.

Coming out of the holiday season, everyone seems to regret spending too much money. This is a good time to reflect on why we don’t stay within a budget and what causes us to splurge when splurging shouldn’t be an option. These tendencies are what cause all of us to put the budget on the back shelf. We want to have the reward fast, and all too often, a temporary feeling of satisfaction only for a feeling of failure to follows. Call it buyers’ remorse or call keeping up with the Joneses. Whatever you call it, realize it is temptation that overcame your rational thinking, leading to a bad financial decision.

Recognizing the tendency or weakness to overspend is the first step to set boundaries around your spending habits. Make it harder to impulse spend by having part 26

of your paycheck sent to a savings or investment account. Don’t deposit the complete check into your checking account if you have discretionary dollars at the end of the month over your bills. (If you don’t have money left over, survey your spending and you will most likely find purchases that were totally unnecessary.) Having part of your check deposited into your savings or investment account adds an extra step. Without the full amount of money in your checking account, you have time to really consider, “Do I need this or am I just wanting this item?”

For those who have never had a financial plan, what are small steps they can take to begin budgeting and planning for the future?

The best thing is to take inventory of your checkbook. Look at the last three months or so and see how much money you spent on things you didn’t need: dining out, entertainment and other activities that did not go to your living

expenses. Basic living needs, simply put, are the items required to survive life. A few necessaries are daily living expenses: food/groceries, medicine, some clothing and housing needs like rent/mortgage. Another would be auto expense. These are the expenses that are recurring and require payment no matter what else is going on in your life. All other spending can be targeted for reduction so you can add to savings or investments for the future.

For those who already have experience with financial planning, what addition steps can they take to make their money go further?

Review your financial plan at least yearly. Review your budget monthly.

This is a must, or you run the risk of falling back into bad habits. Your life and income probably have some fluctuations with pay raises, job changes, etc. Be disciplined enough that if your income goes up, so does the money you contribute to savings.

Enjoy part of the raise. You deserve to reward yourself from time to time,

but stay disciplined when it comes to saving and keeping a budget. Don’t undo the hard work you have done and get discouraged to not continue the road to a better financial future.

Bring your children, if you have them, into the process. Help them with their saving and spending habits and teach them healthy spending habits early. As they enter adulthood, they will have a head start over most. They will thank you later, and that is a reward worth more than money can buy.

The New Year Is the Perfect Time to Put Your Home Equity to Work

Is this the year your kitchen finally gets the upgrade it deserves? Has your family outgrown your living space? Need a new roof, updated bathrooms or maybe you’re ready to add that long-planned pool? A new year often brings fresh goals, and if you’ve been waiting for the right time and the right funding to improve your home, you may already have the solution in place: your home equity.

According to Aaron Scott, mortgage loan officer with Lakeside Bank, a home equity line of credit (HELOC) can be a smart and flexible way to finance projects. A home equity line of credit is a revolving line of credit based on the amount of equity you have in your home. “When you purchase a home, you’re investing in something with long-term value,” Scott explains. “As you pay down your mortgage, you gain equity, the portion of your home’s value you truly own. That equity can be used to help you move forward on goals you’ve been putting off.”

Most homeowners build equity gradually over 20 or 30 years. Equity is the difference between what your home is worth and what you still owe on your mortgage. Once you’ve built equity, you may be 28

eligible to re-borrow a portion of it through either a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit. With a HELOC, Scott says approved funds remain available for use as needed.

“Once your home equity line of credit is approved for a certain amount, you can borrow what you need, pay it back in full or partially and then access those funds again,” says Scott. “It works much like a credit card, but often at a lower interest rate.”

Another advantage is potential tax benefits. “An added benefit of using home equity for financing is that the interest can be tax deductible,” Scott notes. “In fact, this is one of the few types of consumer interest that may still qualify for tax deductibility.”

A home equity line of credit can be used for a wide range of needs, including home improvements, vehicle purchases, college expenses and more. Scott adds that it also serves as a valuable financial safety net. “Having a HELOC approved and available gives you peace of mind if an unexpected expense comes up.”

The key difference between a HELOC and a traditional home equity loan is flexibility. A line of credit allows your balance to go up and down as you borrow and repay, while a home equity loan provides a lump sum with fixed monthly payments. “With a home equity loan, you’re essentially taking out a second mortgage,” Scott explains.

Scott cautions that equity financing isn’t right for everyone. “Your home

is a valuable asset, and it shouldn’t be overleveraged. It’s generally recommended to leave at least 15% to 20% of your equity untouched to protect your investment.”

As a new year begins, Scott says the most practical use of home equity is reinvesting it back into your home.

“Improvements that add value not only enhance your daily life but also strengthen your financial position for the future.”

Your Annual Insurance Checkup Protecting Yourself from Unexpected Situations

It’s the time of the year for making resolutions, and yes, there are some that you should never break. Your annual health resolution includes going to your doctor annually for a checkup. You also perform routine maintenance on your vehicle; your goal is reliability. Another resolution that should not be ignored is an annual review of your insurance policies.

“This review,” says State Farm agent Jennifer Mabou, “should include auto policies, homeowner or renter policies, and life insurance policies. Major life events like marriages, children, buying a new home, starting a new job or even retirement can impact the coverages you need.”

Reviewing your insurance coverage at least once a year is an excellent

idea to help ensure that you, your family and your belongings are all protected. “Do you know what your coverage limits are? Do you know what they mean? Most people we visit with do not,” notes Mabou. “Yet, this is crucial to ensure your unprotected assets are protected from lawsuits. Annual policy reviews give your agent the opportunity to ask important questions about beneficiaries, coverage limits matching asset protection needs, updates made to your home, new drivers in the household and/or discounts you may be missing.”

Mabou says that it’s essential to know if your homeowner policy is a replacement cost value policy or an actual cash value policy. “There is a big difference, just as there is

between hurricane deductibles and wind/hail deductibles. Know which one your homeowner policy includes.”

A review of your automobile policy is also important. You want to ensure that ALL drivers who drive your vehicle at least once a month are listed to avoid a claim being denied.

“Insurance is a risk-management tool, not just an added expense,” states Mabou. “We are all just one life event away from a loss impacting our financial security.

Furthermore, your long-term financial security is directly tied to your earning potential and your ability to earn a living. You should be protecting your income with life insurance and disability insurance.

by your employer. It is crucial to own your own life insurance policies outside of your place of employment. You will want to build an emergency fund to handle high deductibles and unexpected costs after a major loss.

Navarre famliy in Navarre Stadium at McNeese State University

Navarre Automotive Continuing the Legacy Ryan Navarre sits behind his desk at 1301 E. College St. While his office may look different after a recent remodel, the space holds sentimental significance. It’s the same place his father,

job at a struggling dealership in Crowley. Ryan, who fondly recalls going to work with his dad on Saturdays and stopping at the donut shop in Crowley, says Billy ultimately developed that store into the No. 1 dealership in the country. Later, Billy took ownership of a dealership in Sulphur.

Then he acquired another dealership, becoming the first businessman in the country to own two competing car dealerships.

Ryan is now the sole owner of Navarre Automotive, a conglomerate of businesses encompassing new and used vehicles, auto repair, insurance and everything vehicle-related in between. But at his core, Ryan is a family man. He and his wife, Bridgette, parent five kids. Like his father, Ryan mentors and trains his children to follow him into the family business.

Fast forward to the mid-1990s. Billy was determined to teach his four sons the value of hard work, determination and character. “Dad taught me the same things I teach my kids—honesty and accountability,” says Ryan. “If you have those two things, I think you can go far in life.” From the time he was 16, Ryan painted signs and worked in Navarre’s service department as their after-hours roadside assistance person. After he graduated from high school, he paid his own way at McNeese State University with the initial intention of becoming a lawyer. At first, Billy refused to allow Ryan to work for him as a salesman in the company. He wanted him to go out and make it on

renowned Southwest Louisiana businessman Billy Navarre, sat and managed the successful business he had founded decades before.

The legacy began in 1973. Billy Navarre was 18 years old, working in the commercial loan business and striving to support his wife and infant son, Ryan. A native of Welsh, he soon saw the potential in becoming a car salesman and accepted a 32

JANUARY 2026

his own. But after Ryan aced an aptitude test, Billy had little choice but to give his son a shot. Ryan began selling cars part-time and discovered he had quite a knack for the business. He considered dropping out of school to sell cars full-time, but Billy insisted he complete his education. One day, the American Press came onto the lot to grant Navarre the award for Best Auto Dealership, and Ryan won the award for Best Car Dealer, despite only working part-time.

After college graduation, Ryan worked in Navarre’s finance department. Later, he worked as a sales manager and began breaking sales records.

Ryan then carried his expertise across the river to manage the Sulphur store.

Around 2011, Billy was diagnosed with cancer. He asked Ryan to manage the Lake Charles businesses for him in addition to the Sulphur location. Sadly, Billy passed in 2016. Since then, with Ryan at the helm, the organization has doubled in size.

Ryan says his father always saw the potential in people, “and he pushed them as hard as he

could to get them there.” Ryan cultivates and grows his own children’s character, as well. His sons started at Navarre working “in the pits,” changing oil and making customer service phone calls. Today, son Gage, age 26, is a sales manager. Daughter Jaide, 22, graduated from McNeese last month and works in the service department. Son Blaide, 20, is a sophomore at McNeese and works in Navarre’s business development department. Juliana, 19, is a freshman at McNeese and works in Navarre’s accounting department and also operates a retail clothing business on TikTok. Scarlett, 8, is the couple’s youngest.

“It’s the trials and tribulations of life and working through those struggles that lead to happiness,” Ryan says. “They need to fight the fight and grow from that because it’s in those moments that they learn and improve. Success is overcoming failure.”

Ryan also understands that life is more than just hard work. The Navarres enjoy spending time together. “We eat together, go to church together, travel together. We are board game fanatics. We enjoy Formula One racing. We love to hunt. That was something I did with my father, and it stuck with me.”

The family also volunteers together. Stemming from their love of Lake Charles, community service is a priority. “You can’t take stuff with you when you go to Heaven,” Ryan says. He cites the ancient Greek proverb: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” He adds, “People will remember the things we do for others. That’s what matters. That is our legacy.”

SASOL SCHOLARS PROGRAM OPENS 2026 APPLICATION Sasol is proud to announce the opening of applications for the 2026 Sasol Scholars Program, continuing its commitment to educational excellence and workforce development in Calcasieu Parish.

Over the past decade, Sasol has invested more than $9 million in social investment programs and awarded more than 330 scholarships.

The Sasol Scholars Program, which supports seniors from Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB) schools pursuing two- or four-year college degrees, provides each recipient with a $2,500 annual scholarship.

“We’ve seen firsthand how the Sasol Scholars Program continues to open doors for students and strengthen our community,” said Todd Hancock, vice president of operations. “The Sasol Scholars Program goes far beyond financial support—it builds confidence, fosters mentorship and helps students see a future for themselves in the energy and chemicals industries. We’re proud to keep investing in these bright minds who will shape Louisiana’s workforce and lead our industry forward.”

The Sasol Scholars Program provides much-needed financial assistance to help alleviate the cost of higher education. Applications for the 2026 Sasol Scholars Program are now open and will close on February 16, 2026. High school seniors in CPSB who are pursuing a two- or four-year degree are encouraged to apply. The scholarship awards will be announced in the spring.

LAKE CHARLES COLLEGE PREP INCREASES ACCOUNTABILITY SCORE Lake Charles College Prep has earned a significant achievement in the Louisiana Department of Education’s accountability system, rising from a “B” rating last year to an “A” this year with an impressive 16.5-point gain.

The school was recently named one of the top growing schools in Louisiana.

RIBBON CUT ON LAKE CHARLES POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATIONS BUILDING On Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell was joined by Lake Charles Mayor Marshall Simien, members of the Lake Charles City Council, City Administration, LCPD personnel and community partners to cut the ribbon on a brand-new building that now houses the department’s Investigation’s Bureau.

Located at 1028 Enterprise Blvd., the building is home to the department’s Investigations, Identification/ Evidence, and Records Divisions. The completion of this project marks a milestone in the department’s ongoing recovery from Hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020 as the former building housing these divisions was damaged beyond repair.

“This is a big day for our department,”

said Chief Shawn Caldwell. “The men and women of the Lake Charles Police Department have worked through some less-than-ideal conditions over the past five years, but they have never wavered. I am truly humbled by and proud of the resilience shown by our officers and support staff as they’ve worked from temporary locations, staying diligent in their pursuit of answering the call to serve our community.”

As a result of Hurricanes Laura and Delta, several key assets, including the former Investigations building and training building, had to be demolished. Work is nearing completion on the new home of the Training Division located on Common Street.

FEMA has obligated funds for the reconstruction of this building at a 90 percent cost-share.

RODRIGUE: A LOUISIANA COWBOY EXHIBIT OPENS JANUARY WITH EXHIBIT TOURS HOSTED BY WENDY RODRIGUE Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center will open a special exhibition this January celebrating one of Louisiana’s most iconic artists, George Rodrigue. Rodrigue: A Louisiana Cowboy explores Rodrigue’s deep connection to the land, the open road and the legacy of the Cajun cowboy.

The exhibition is organized around Rodrigue’s own words. “West of Lafayette, near Crowley and Jennings, the land is flat. This was the beginning of the prairies that slowly moved geographically towards Texas.

It was the perfect land for raising cattle, and in the late 19th century, the Cajun cowboys drove their herds

north through Shreveport and into Arkansas and Oklahoma to the railroad, to be sold and shipped up east,” said Rodrigue.

According to Rodrigue, these cattle drives became widely known as Cajun cowboys guided their herds through the heart of the country.

The expansion of the railroad eventually reached the cattle, bringing an end to the drives and closing a brief but significant chapter of Louisiana history.

Rodrigue: A Louisiana Cowboy will feature over 40 paintings, the iconic cow sculpture and a selection of mixed-media works that reflect Rodrigue’s fascination with Western themes, Louisiana prairies and the spirit of the open landscape.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Historic City Hall is offering limited educational tour opportunities from January 27–30, 2026, hosted inside the gallery by Wendy Rodrigue, George Rodrigue’s widow and a leading advocate for his artistic legacy. These tours will provide unique insight into Rodrigue’s work, inspiration and

the historical context behind the Cajun cowboy series. Tour spaces are extremely limited. Schools, organizations and small groups interested in reserving a tour may inquire via email at artsandculture@ cityoflc.us.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the 3rd-floor gallery space. Light refreshments will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will be on view from January 23-April 4, 2026, on the 3rd floor at the Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center.

KIWANIS CLUB OF LAKE CHARLES COATS FOR KIDS CAMPAIGN RAISES $52,000 The Kiwanis Club of Lake Charles presented 10 charitable agencies with $52,000 at the club's annual 2025 Coats for Kids Luncheon. The event celebrates the culmination of the Coats for Kids campaign that runs in November. All monetary donations and coats collected are distributed between the ten benefiting organization. Beneficiaries

include: Abraham's Tent, Boy's Village, CARC, Care Help of Sulphur, CPSB McKinney-Vento Program, DeWanna's Community Closet, Harbour House, The Lord's Place, Oasis Women's Shelter, and Potter's House.

LC LITTLE THEATRE PLANS TO REBUILD AT ITS LONGTIME DOWNTOWN LOCATION The Lake Charles Little Theatre, the region’s oldest arts organization, is celebrating its 100th anniversary by building a new theatre at its longtime downtown site.

The theatre’s 813 Enterprise Blvd. site—its home for more than three decades—was damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Laura in 2020.

Demolition has already occurred.

A new arts-specific facility will be designed and built at the site with a similar footprint.

Plans for the new theatre, as well as multiple 100th-anniversary special events and a community-wide capital campaign, will be announced this year. In rebuilding, LCLT will be resuming its role as a centerpiece of the downtown arts, along a stretch of Enterprise Boulevard

that anchors what is now the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District. In the meantime, LCLT’s interim home is a double-classroom studio at Central School Arts & Humanities Center.

Its temporary performance space is Southlake Theater on Nelson Road.

LCLT’s previous homes over the years have included a former Wells Fargo stable, the Arcade Theatre, a refitted Chennault chapel and the downtown Capo building.

Before Hurricane Laura, LCLT’s home was an empty U.S. Postal Service garage that had been used to repair mail trucks. In an award-winning effort of adaptive reuse, LCLT bought the building and, in 1986, converted it into a 100-seat theater with a lobby, overhead dressing room and seats from a former movie theater.

During this transition, LCLT will continue to host productions, educational programs and community events at Southlake Theater and other venues throughout the city.

by Kerri Cooke The Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu was first conceived in the early ‘90s by Anne Monlezun, David O’Quinn and captains of local Krewes. All heavily involved in SWLA Mardi Gras, the founders secured elaborate costumes, which were then housed in Central School Arts & Humanities Center from 1998 until 2020’s Hurricanes Laura and Delta. The collection had grown so big that there was only enough space to display a portion of the costumes. There were also displays dedicated to SWLA’s chicken runs, or the courir de Mardi Gras, local traditions and Washington D.C. Mardi Gras. The museum was known for having the greatest number of Mardi Gras costumes on view in the world.

Since 2020, local organizations have been on a mission to see the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu get its own home. The site of the new build is in the heart of the Nellie Lutcher Cultural District on Enterprise Boulevard. Curator and Director David Faulk anticipates an opening for Mardi Gras weekend or shortly after. The new complex will include a significant addition of costumes, new technology and a Mardi Gras gift shop with items made by local artists.

The project was made possible by Visit Lake Charles, which applied for and received a grant from the Economic Development Agency while donating funds as well, the City of Lake Charles, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and more.

Executive Director Melissa Griffin, previously the financial manager, has been working for the nonprofit since 2021 and details how much of an impact the organization is making for individuals and their families in the local community.

What is the overall goal of Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana?

The goal of Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana is to provide housing and support services to adults with autism.

What are your top three immediate priorities?

1) We have seven homes and are growing! A big priority for us is to facilitate additional housing opportunities for those on our waiting list.

2) Implementing a day program that supports socialization, learning and inclusion for individuals with developmental disabilities.

3) Our final priority is to grow our endowment with the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana. We are vested members in our region that want our mission to benefit these adults forever. Supporters of our endowment help us fund future homes and support our mission in perpetuity!

What is the everyday impact you see in the local community stemming from Autism Society of Southwest Louisiana?

The adults that benefit from our services are thriving! They live in beautiful well-maintained homes and are good neighbors to their community.

They enjoy every facet of life in Southwest Louisiana, from our culture to community events. I get to witness them form friendships, take pride in home ownership, volunteer at other nonprofits, go to church and even find competitive employment.

How do Mardi Gras beads help you fundraise?

We partner with our community and take donations after the "fun of the catch" is over. Several area businesses, including Team Green, with the City of Lake Charles, offer to set up donation locations all around the area to allow individuals to drop off their throws after Mardi Gras. We also accept them in our office at 3006 Common St. After they are donated, we clean them, sort them and separate

them for resale for the next Mardi Gras season. This past year, many local companies and volunteers from the community came to help us with this bead sorting. The funds from this specifically help provide for adults in our program that are seeking community engagement through fostering volunteer work or developing skills to pursue competitive employment.

What do you wish people knew about Autism Society of Southwest Louisiana that you feel is not understood?

I challenge our community to learn what makes Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana different. Our services are individualized, not institutionalized. These adults are flourishing in an environment that respects each person's choices, abilities and goals. Families worry about their future and who will care for them. We show these families that they will be safe, supported and have a home for life!

It wouldn’t be Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana without the presence of vibrant and lively musical performances. We could hardly laissez les bons temps rouler without a melody to get our feet moving. One local band, Rusty Metoyer and the Zydeco Krush, are at their busiest in the two weeks leading up to Mardi Gras. Not only has their fan base grown over the years but so have their gigs—jumping from around 80 yearly in 2019 to over 140 yearly in 2025.

The band, composed of Rusty Metoyer, band leader, lead singer and accordion player; Andrew Fontenot, drums; Cameron LaVan, scrub board; Marcus Jack, bass; Eric Joseph, keys; and Kaleb LeDay, guitar, performs every weekend at various events, but Mardi Gras is a special time. Metoyer says he loves to focus on performing for rural Mardi Gras celebrations. “The country Mardi Gras is our specialty. I look forward to it every year. It’s the tradition behind it and the family aspect.

It’s the small Mardi Gras traditions inherited from parents and grandparents, and now people are bringing their kids and grandkids to continue the tradition.”

Once such small celebration is the Iowa Chicken Run which Metoyer performs for every year. “I do the parade and the horse ride. I play the accordion for the elderly while the kids chase the chickens. And then I play for the dance that night.”

Metoyer also plays for the Ceasar’s Mardi Gras Chicken Run in Elton and at the chicken run in Lake Charles (labeled Lake Charles Mardi Gras Parade & Zydeco Dance) put on by Antonio Duhon the weekend before Mardi Gras weekend. “Everyone thinks you need to go to Mamou or Eunice to take part in these festivities. There’s one right here. It brings everyone in the surrounding areas out.”

The connection the local community has with music is inseparable from music. From rich Creole tunes to the melodies of zydeco, Metoyer says Mardi Gras and music are a natural combination. “Mardi Gras is about getting your partying and reveling out before Lent starts. You can’t be in a bad

mood when listening to zydeco. It’s happy, upbeat and makes you want to dance, especially when participating in something cultural like Mardi Gras.”

While Metoyer has traveled and performed overseas and extensively up the east coast and west coasts of the United States, he says during Mardi Gras he’s “blessed to do exactly what I want to do.” Other places appreciate zydeco because it’s a “novelty,” but in Southwest Louisiana it’s a part of life.

Metoyer says, “I want Rusty Metoyer to be synonymous with zydeco when people think about the genre” and hopes to keep growing the band’s reach.

Lake Charles Event Center The festivities kick off with a parade starting at the Lake Charles Event Center (900 Lakeshore Dr.). The 4.1-mile route heads east down Broad Street, turns north on Shattuck Street and then west onto Belden Street.

After the parade, head over to VFW Hall (2668 US-171, Lake Charles) for the official after-party, where the fun continues with live music and competitions. Don’t miss the Chicken and Pig Run starting at 4:00 p.m. Kids can compete in the Chicken Run for a chance to win $50, while the Pig Run winner takes home $100 or gets to keep the pig!

The parade turns right onto 4th Avenue, proceeds to 13th Street, makes a right onto 5th Avenue and turns left back onto 18th Street to return to the school.

The Royal Court members, representing kindergarten through 5th grade, are selected based on their academic accomplishments: Kindergarten: Members are chosen based on growth on the DIBELS Middle of the Year Assessment.

1st–5th Grade: Members are selected based on their Accelerated Reader (AR) performance, with the highest number of books read at 85% comprehension or higher.

Lakefront Promenade The parade is a walking parade designed specifically for children ages 3-12. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and line-up will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Lakefront Promenade. There is no fee to enter.

Young revelers will parade down Gill Street to Bord Du Lac and return to Millennium Park. Streets will be closed down allowing children to strut to the tunes of the Second Line Stroll.

at participating homes for the participants to get down and dance to zydeco music, which is played with an accordion and scrub board.

If the families approve the dancing skills, they donate ingredients to the gumbo and a chicken is thrown into the air. Sometimes the captain will throw multiple chickens in the air several times or more for the children to catch.

The parade stops at Market Basket and the VF Factory Outlet where more chickens are released into the air. The parade then ends back at the KC Hall. The ingredients are then put into a pot with the chickens, and gumbo is served to the riders while the children play from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

The chicken run concludes with a zydeco dance with music by Rusty Metoyer & the Zydeco Krush at 5:00 p.m.

Mardi Gras in the Zone 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Lawn of 1015 Pithon Building along Ryan Street, between Gill and Kirby St. Attendees can enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn, Coca-Cola products and Kona Ice, while kids burn off energy in the bounce house, activity tent and with inflatable games.

A New Chapter Begins in Mid-City The doors are open, lights are on and residents have started moving in at Mid-City Lofts, marking a major milestone in the Just Imagine SWLA Mid-City Neighborhood Transformation and a new chapter for the heart of Lake Charles. This achievement

was made possible through a collaborative effort led by the City of Lake Charles and the Lake Charles Housing Authority, which were awarded a $40 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant to redevelop the housing authority property at Lake and West 18th Streets. HRI Communities and Urban Strategies Inc. were key members of the project team and played an instrumental role in organizing and preparing the successful application.

Built on the former Lloyd Oaks site, Mid-City Lofts represents more than the completion of a housing development. It is the first major, visible realization of a long-term community vision shaped in the wake of Hurricanes Laura and Delta and guided by the Just Imagine SWLA 50-Year Resilience Master Plan.

“I've always said it's going to be a game changer and it truly is a game changer for the Lake Charles community,” said Raymond McCall, co-owner of Gordon’s Drug Store

in Lake Charles. “When we looked at it before, no one ever wanted to recognize Lloyd Oaks, but then, all of a sudden, now we're seeing development, and people are all abuzz.”

The 46-unit mixed-income development brings together affordable and market-rate housing in a walkable, centrally located neighborhood. For McCall, whose pharmacy sits just across the street, the project is already changing how residents can access everyday needs. Prescription delivery, immunizations and outreach events are now steps away rather than across town.

For Denise Rau, a retired financial planner and longtime Lake Charles resident, Mid-City Lofts represents something deeper. Decades ago, she participated in leadership discussions focused on how to address poverty in the region.

The conversations often stalled under the weight of complex, interconnected challenges.

“All of those things are addressed right here in this new development,” Rau said. “It's magnificent. It is going to transform this whole community—not just the people who will live here, but everything around it.”

Leadership from the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana has been central to turning that vision into reality. Jim Rock, chair of the foundation’s board, has been

involved since the beginning.

“After the storm, it was completely unlivable, and to see that this building is up now is incredible,” Rock said. “This is really, I think, the beacon, of the whole Just Imagine SWLA Master Plan project. And people are saying, ‘If they can do that there, no telling what we can do in these other projects.’”

Rock credits visits to successful mixed-income developments in New Orleans for solidifying confidence in the model. “It was nice. It was clean. Everybody was happy there and I was thinking, ‘Gosh, if they could do that here, the people and leaders in Lake Charles can make it happen there.’”

For Karen and Ken Chamberlain, both members of the Community Foundation, seeing the project complete has been emotional. Ken Chamberlain described Mid-City Lofts as exceeding expectations and proof that rebuilding differently is possible.

“It starts with housing,” he said.

“I think we all like to live in a nice place that you can you enjoy being in, and the surroundings are nice, and you've got activities and easy access to things. I think it makes life easier and more enjoyable.”

Karen Chamberlain emphasized the pride residents will feel being part of something larger than a single building.

With residents already moved in and occupancy growing, Mid-City Lofts is no longer just imagined. It is lived in, experienced and beginning to reshape what is possible for MidCity and Calcasieu and Cameron parishes as a whole.

Dr. Kedrick Nicholas McNeese State University Interim President

Since I was named McNeese’s interim president, I have met with students, faculty, staff, donors and community supporters. I have found that there are a multitude of people who are invested in our university and will use as many resources as possible to support it. One of the greatest fulfillments of working in higher education is to be able to make a positive difference in our students’ lives. An added element of joy is knowing there are so many individuals

in our communities who are deeply invested in our quest for success.

Our new Student Union is near completion, and we are planning grand opening celebrations in January. The President’s home is gutted and being rebuilt to include an entertainment space with an apartment on the second floor. Watch for an exquisite transformation of the home that should be completed by August.

The LNG Center of Excellence, a facility with a brand and operations that will make our campus the epicenter of liquified natural gas (LNG) education, research and workforce development, will open this spring. We are developing a unique curriculum that will solidify our place in the future of LNG education.

I am looking forward to a wonderful 2026 for McNeese and our community!

According to L Bridal Couture owner Dr. Laurie Baynard, Mardi Gras gowns are intentionally powerful. “Mardi Gras looks aren’t meant to blend in,” Baynard says. “Everyone is trying to steal the show, and it’s encouraged.” That philosophy is shaping every aspect of what women will be wearing to balls across Southwest Louisiana in 2026.

Royal silhouettes meet modern drama For queens and debutantes, tradition still holds strong but with elevated updates. Architectural silhouettes anchor the look, paired with sculpted bodices, dramatic sleeves, gloves and carefully placed embellishments.

A-lines, full ball gowns and structured fit-and-flare designs remain the gold standard, offering both grandeur and movement while defining the waist.

Ball attendees, however, are leaning more fashion-forward. Think fitted silhouettes, sequins, bold slits and statement-making details that feel celebratory rather than restrained.

You can enhance your personality or choose to be someone else for a night at a costume ball. Either way, dresses and costumes are not complete without accompanying hair and makeup. Kylie Marcantel, owner of Blush, gives tips on what’s hot and what’s not for the 2026 Mardi Gras season.

Makeup While the “clean girl” look is still popular, Mardi Gras gives women an opportunity to be a little bolder with their makeup than they would be on an average day.

Marcantel says some girls opt to match their makeup to the colors of their dresses or request a smoky eye.

And false lashes are a must. Customers requesting a bright red lip increase as well.

When it comes to costume balls, Marcantel says it’s the perfect opportunity to turn up the volume on the 64

makeup even more as the look needs to match a specific theme. One time she drew a mask on the face of one client.

The most important aspect of Mardi Gras makeup is its lasting ability. Full coverage is often requested, but since many are having their appointments on the same day, a girl might have to get her makeup done as early as 9:00 a.m. for an event that night. Marcantel says the optimal appointment time is around 1:00 p.m., and many of her stylists are already booked up for Mardi Gras events as clients book appointments as soon as they know the dates of the festivities.

Hairstyles For the more formal events of Mardi Gras, many girls are opting for hairstyles that leave their hair down—think “Hollywood curls that last all day or lots of volume,” Marcantel says. “There’s an occasional updo, but everything we did in the ‘90s is coming back. Think Farrah Fawcett hair.”

The same rule applies for hair as makeup when it comes to costume ball. Marcantel notes that one time she did a girl’s hair in the style of Pippi Longstocking. If the theme were to be Versailles, think of powdered curls Marie Antoinette style.

Marcantel emphasizes, “If you haven’t booked a hair and makeup appointment for Mardi Gras, it’s time to do so.”

Think about the last time you went clothing shopping and tried on multiple items in the dressing room.

One piece might’ve highlighted the wrong area of your body while another might’ve made your complexion look sallow. Christine Bruno has opened two House of Color franchises in SWLA to address these issues women face every day.

Originally from Ragley, Bruno moved with her husband, Jared, who works for CITGO, and kids to Corpus Christi in 2021. Meanwhile, she had a friend in Shreveport who she bonded with other Rodan + Fields skincare. The two went to an affiliated conference in Houston in October 2023. While in Houston, Bruno also had a color analysis done, which looks at the undertones in your face and determines what colors suit your complexion best. For an accurate analysis, the person being evaluated has to be makeup free and cover their hair if it’s colored. Once she had her colors done, Bruno says, “It changed the way I felt. I became confident in what I was wearing and ready to take on the day and my family.”

Bruno prayed about buying a franchise in Corpus Christi, and she was encouraged by family member. In April 2024, she took the leap. She left that behind when she started a House of Color in Lake Charles in June 2025. She has since bought back the Corpus Christi franchise, and also has an associate, Kristy Wood, who services areas such as DeRidder, Longville, Ragley and Kinder with a second SWLA franchise. Together the two franchises cover the five-parish area.

House of Color has its origins in color theory, developed by Johannes Itten, a Swiss expressionist painter who wrote The Art of Color.

The company opened in the U.K. but has been in 66

the U.S. for the last decade. The basis of a color analysis is that there are four seasons in which a person can fall—winter and spring, in which colors are saturated and bright, and autumn and summer in which colors are muted, blended and desaturated. Within these four seasons are four sub-seasons each. According to where you fall on the color wheel, color shades and jewelry tones are recommended.

The Process A client is draped with colored cloths in natural lighting, alternating between shades with cool and warm tones. The color analysis shows how the wrong shades can bring out blue or yellow undertones in the face and determines the season you fit in. Once confident in one season, every color in that section will be brought out and draped on the client. Colors will be rated,

and the highest rated colors help determine a sub-season.

Bruno moves on to makeup after the initial color determination, showing people the colors they should be wearing to bring out their best features. She says, “The most important color you can wear is makeup because it’s on your face.”

Bruno stops before she applies lipstick to the client to take a before and after picture to show how lip color can brighten the whole face. She also advices what shade of red a person should wear. (House of Color has its own makeup line manufactured in the U.S. according the E.U. clean beauty standards.)

When you’re wearing the right colors for your complexion, the colors are in harmony with us, Bruno says, and the “human eye loves harmony.”

Clients leave with a deck curated to their season which advises on jewelry and color palette. The whole process takes two and a half hours.

Bruno says, “The reason I love my job so much is because I am taking people’s natural God-given beauty and enhancing it without changing who they are. You watch them change in front of you and embrace who they are.”

In addition, Bruno offers styling services, determining what type of clothing personality you have and how to shop in your season. She also offers personal shopping, wardrobe edits and advanced makeup.

Party Like It’s 2026 Trend Inspiration for your Next Event

Party trends come and go with each passing year, and every decade has its own standout party themes. Think of 1920s cocktail parties or disco parties in the 1970s. However, with the internet and popular culture, multiple trends can come and go in a single season. Sara Lasher, a local wedding and event planner, details what she sees as the most popular requests for 2026.

Colors

Food and Beverage

While in the past people have been hesitant to use bold color, Lasher says, many are “no longer afraid of color, pattern and texture. At the beginning of my career, I used to see a lot of white and green, cotton and polyester, which is timeless but common.”

While many of us grew up visiting houses for birthday parties and potluck dinners, Lasher says the popularity of seated dinners is waning. People much prefer a cocktail party in which they can “visit, explore and ping-pong across the property.”

Chartreuse is a standout color. Just think of the green wall when you walk into the downtown restaurant, Augustine, which opened last year.

Lasher says in weddings leveraging chartreuse, she has seen pears, apples, artichokes and green grapes as accents. Sugared fruit is another popular option because “it’s pretty and photographs well.”

At cocktail parties, Lasher has seen a rise in hosts offering a late-night snack around 45 minutes before guests leave the party. She recalls one party in which Taco Bell was passed around. “Guests really appreciate something in their stomach to absorb the alcohol before they get on the road.”

Punchy colors, such as the shade of pomegranates, are gaining popularity. This continues the theme of fruit, which is taking over event tablescapes and grazing tables.

Butter yellows and cobalt blue are two more popular colors. However, Lasher notes that with such a bold color as cobalt blue, it’s best to utilize the services of a stylist or designer, because the color can easily overwhelm everything else at the event.

Music While Lasher says bands took the spotlight in 2025, 2026 will bring the return of the DJ. “DJs are very diverse, budget-friendly and have a production factor that not all bands have. They offer marquee lights, cold sparks, fog machines and uplighting.”

In addition to putting on a visual show, a DJ is not locked into one style of music but can change genres according to what the host or crowd wants.

While in the past, hosts have had a beer and wine bar that offered a couple of signature drinks, Lasher says more people are opting to provide a full bar experience. “It’s usually close to the same price, and it helps prioritize the guest experience.”

One drink in particular is proving popular—the espresso martini. “I’ve had people request espresso martini towers instead of champagne towers,” Lasher says. “It’s definitely the year of espresso martinis. In the event of late-night martinis, some offer miniatures so you don’t have to fully commit to a whole martini.”

Lasher believes people are entertaining more frequently, and, therefore, engaging the services of a caterer, florist, stylist and designer. This provides a standout experience for the guest. She believes that this frequency is what is driving people to be bolder in their entertainment choices. “People are more confident to take a risk.”

Sara Smith with PaperSmith says, “Invitations extended through email or social media just don’t have the personal touch or carry the sincerity that paper invitations possess. A personal invitation, received in the mail, gets noticed.”

Invitations are useful for events planned significantly in advance, such as Mardi Gras balls, weddings, baby showers and birthday parties. When deciding to go the traditional route and order paper invites, be sure to begin planning and picking out designs early. Smith says, “Wedding invitations should be mailed six to eight weeks out, and we need at least that to process orders. That gives us three months lead time, and that can be a little hectic depending on printing method and complexity of the invitation.” For other invitations, mailing them three to four weeks ahead is a good rule of thumb, but it can be done as little as two weeks before the event. The processing time for these invitations is shorter as well.

Other helpful tips to avoid stress is to settle on a budget for invitations and decide whether there is any flexibility on how much you can spend. Also, before shopping, write a list of who will be invited. Make sure to categorize people by household, as you don’t need an invitation for every person but one for each different address. And it’s always helpful if you have a theme picked out in advance. Pinterest is a great

resource for ideas. Pictures and explanations will help the professionals narrow down the options in your budget as quickly and conveniently as possible. But don’t forget to have fun. Picking out what will eventually be memorabilia should be half the fun.

“For 2026, I am seeing a strong shift toward intentionally curated, experience-driven events,” says local wedding photographer Emily Fuselier. “Couples and hosts are moving away from overly formal, rigid timelines and leaning into celebrations that feel more personal, immersive and relaxed. Think multi-day wedding weekends, welcome parties and farewell brunches that allow guests to truly connect rather than just attend.”

According to Fuselier, there is also a beautiful reappearance of timeless, sentimental details like heirloom pieces, vintage attire, handwritten elements and meaningful family traditions, artfully blended with modern design.

“From my perspective as a photographer, events feel less like productions and more like stories unfolding naturally, which always results in more emotional, authentic moments.”

This shift toward authenticity and connection is shaping more than just how events feel. It is redefining how they are designed with photography in mind.

“Rather than strict themes, 2026 is all about cohesive aesthetics and mood,” explains Fuselier. “Soft, layered textures, organic florals, neutral palettes with intentional pops of color and candlelit environments are trending strongly. We’re also seeing a move toward ‘quiet luxury’ or understated elegance that feels refined but not overdone.”

These elements translate masterfully through the camera, creating depth, warmth and atmosphere that elevate candid photography.

Personalization is key. Fuselier encourages couples to embrace elements such as custom stationery, meaningful details and design choices that celebrate their story, rather than following trends for trend’s sake. “Those personal touches are what make the final photography product feel timeless. They anchor the images in emotion.”

In terms of booking professional services, Fuselier stresses that timing matters, especially when photography is a priority.

“Photographers should be secured shortly after the venue, about 12-18 months in advance, because we help guide the visual and storytelling components of the entire experience.”

Fuselier adds that booking early not only secures availability but also gives couples peace of mind and more time to work with their photographer on thoughtfully designing and shaping the vision for their event.

Ultimately, this evolution event photography is rooted in intention. “The most memorable events aren’t defined by trends. Don’t Let Dessert Become an Afterthought

A good celebration isn’t complete without a moist cake or variety of sweet treats. After all, eating a sugary treat increases dopamine

levels in your brain. If you love a traditional cake or cookie tray, guests sure won’t complain. But if you’re looking for something a little outside the ordinary, there are other options to explore. Jessica Steech, head baker at Pronia’s Deli and Bakery, gives some insight into popular items.

Pronia’s opened as a deli in 1989 and began offering cookies and King Cakes, strawberry cream cheese is a bestseller, in the early ‘90s. The bakery department officially opened in 2008 when wedding cakes were added to the business model. Steech says their champagne cake is their bestseller across the board. For weddings, they ask to be notified a good amount of time in advance, while a week is sufficient lead time for a regular cake order, although time constraints are not strict, and the bakery does its best to accommodate all requests. For scale, Pronia’s bakes around 100 birthday cakes a week.

Another popular and easy sweet option is a cookie tray. Pronia’s cookie trays include the flavors chocolate chip, M&M, sugar cookie, pecan shortbread, New Orleans blend, double chocolate, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin. A 48-hour notice is preferred for a cookie tray.

For customers who prefer a nontraditional approach when it comes to dessert options, Steech says she has seen people do a cookie and milk bar, a cheesecake bar and even a dessert table with various sweets, such as cannoli, baklava and cookies. Pronia’s has also had requests for stacked cookie cakes.

Steech says there’s nothing like dessert to complete an event. “A dessert brings the celebration to an event and a different type of excitement to the meal.”

If you’re unsure of what you need, Steech emphasizes, “We will be honest and not oversell you something. We will advise you on what we think you need for an event and treat you like family.”

Pronia’s also offers sweets for last minute events or a pick-me-up after lunch.
