Football fans anticipate their team’s tailgating traditions every fall as they create lasting memories and build fan connections. McNeese fans are no different, but every great tradition requires someone to be in charge. MSU tailgating chefs Gregory Thibodeaux and David Fruge happily take on the planning, cooking and serving.

Thibodeaux’s journey began over 17 years ago when he was asked to assist with preparing gumbo for the homecoming crowd. “At the time, the effort required to prepare and serve gumbo to several hundred fans became overwhelming. I transitioned the menu to my personal chili recipe when I was asked to assume leadership. I remain grateful for the continuous support from every helper I have met throughout this journey.

“We relocated to the alumni yard under the Petro Chem Booster tent, a significant turning point for our cooking team. We continue to cook under the large Turner Industries tent in the yard, preserving another long-standing tradition.

“I like to venture out beyond the alumni yard to visit with fellow tailgaters, sample a diverse array of foods, sauces and fried specialties, and admire the fans proudly wearing their finest blue and gold attire. Music resonates throughout the area, with small bands playing as people

dance on the lawn. Children toss footballs and play games of chase. Everyone converses with opposing fans in a welcoming environment. I love hearing the celebratory cannons fire and the MSU band playing Jolie Blonde. Ultimately, these Saturday afternoons resemble a McNeese community family reunion.”

David Fruge became a tailgate chef as a result of advertising from the McNeese Alumni Association. Although his story is different, his passion for cooking and being out among other Cowboy fans is why he keeps the tradition going.

“Four years ago I signed up to cook after seeing an advertisement opportunity for the company I work for, Spectrum Water Technology. It easily became my favorite tailgate tradition. Coworkers, my wife and friends all came to help set up and cook. The first year my main dish was fried ribs.

Many tailgaters commented on how much they enjoyed these because it was different. I’ve stuck with the ribs, adding chicken wings and strips, and fries. This continues to be a crowd favorite each year so I’ll say ribs are definitely my go-to game day dish.

“I grew up in Eunice, a small town with no college football, but Friday night lights are still a big deal there. Initially I came to McNeese to play football. After an injury and surgery in my senior year, plans changed, but I did graduate from MSU. I truly love supporting McNeese as a tailgating chef and alumnus—this is a small community with a big heart and true fans. There’s nothing better than spending a day visiting other tailgate spots, seeing friends, meeting new people, and cooking, of course ... even better when the cooler weather shows up!”

SWLA Eateries Use Local Sandwich Ingredients

Ever wonder where the food you eat comes from? If you, as a consumer, are concerned about freshness and good nutrition, it’s a valid question.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), conventional produce coming to Southwest Louisiana travels an average of 1,500 to 2,500 miles. Lettuce and spinach are primarily shipped from large commercial farms in California and Arizona; tomatoes often originate from California, Florida or Mexico. Meats and seafood can be shipped from anywhere across the globe.

For some local chefs and restaurateurs, that is unacceptable. Instead, they source some of their ingredients from local farms and producers—fruits and vegetables in season, fresh seafood, local honey, breads from nearby bakeries. “It means a lot, as a new restaurant and as a chef, to utilize and show off our local ingredients,” says Chef Lyle Broussard with Crying EagleLakefront. “I feel a great sense of pride when guests ask about some of our sources.”

Living near the Gulf Coast, it’s relatively easy to find fresh seafood, including in our sandwiches. Dave Evans at Augustine offers a Fried Oyster Po’boy featuring local Gulf oysters with lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli.

At Luna Bar and Grill Downtown and Luna South, enjoy The Venus with grilled or fried shrimp straight from the Gulf dressed with Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, avocado, lettuce, tomato and jalapeño mayo on your choice of bread—brioche bun, jalapeño cheddar sourdough or sourdough wheat.

On the Crying Eagle-Lakefront menu, you’ll find two tempting seafood po’boys. Their shrimp is sourced from Big Easy Foods on Ryan St., and their oysters come from JT’s Seafood on Lake St., both in Lake Charles.

Biscuits n Jamz makes a breakfast sandwich called the F Biscuit (F for French toast). It’s a house-made biscuit dipped in French toast batter and grilled with an egg, sausage link and bourbon bacon onion jam. Chef Al Hess sources their eggs from his own Sugar Shack Farm in Iowa, Louisiana.

When it comes to fresh bread, it doesn’t get any fresher than house made. Chef Zachary Aymond at Pujo St. Cafe bakes the bread for his Hot Honey Fried Chicken Sandwich each morning.

It’s a buttermilk-marinated chicken breast, fried and drizzled with hot honey, served on his jalapeno/cheddar bun, and dressed with house-made pickles and mayo. “Making items in house from scratch or sourcing locally ensures a standard of quality through knowledge of the ingredients used in our dishes,” says Aymond.

Chicken Salad Chick More than Chicken Salad: A Family’s Recipe for Community

After years of moving from one community to another, Tiffanie and Gary Goff decided it was time to put down roots in Lake Charles and build something lasting. As co-owners of Chicken Salad Chick, they have created a business centered around the values that have guided their family for years—hospitality, service and community.

For the Goffs, the opportunity is about more than owning a restaurant. It is about creating something their children can be part of and a place their family can continue to invest in for years to come. Their son, Tyler, is completing his degree at McNeese State University, and their daughter, Audrey, is continuing her education on a volleyball scholarship at Doane University in Nebraska. After years of following the path created by Gary’s coaching career, the Goffs hope this family business provides a lasting connection and a foundation their children can build on in the future.

“The alignment of our values with those of Chicken Salad Chick, ‘Spreading Joy, Enriching Lives, Serving Others,’ is obvious based on the professions to which we have dedicated our lives,” Tiffanie said. “As a football coach and an educator, we have enjoyed continuous

Those same values guide the way the Goffs approach their restaurant today. Gary’s years as a football coach have taught him the importance of building strong teams and meaningful relationships, while Tiffanie’s career in education has reinforced the importance of connection and service.

For the Goff family, food has always been a way to bring people together. After losing Gary’s mother to breast cancer more than a decade ago, the family continued one of her favorite holiday traditions of making her sausage balls and Russian tea cake cookies while sharing memories of the woman who helped hold their family together.

“She had a special way of bringing family together, so it is only appropriate that her recipes are now doing that,” Tiffanie said.

Today, the Goffs hope Chicken Salad Chick can become that same kind of gathering place for others, a place where families, friends and neighbors feel welcomed and connected.

August is Caregiver Appreciation Month.

It is estimated that between 50-70% of Americans who turn 65 will eventually need some form of caregiving later in life. The population decline in the United States has been a key issue when regarding the future of elder care. There are already not enough caregiving resources due to the sheer volume of those needing help and financial constraints. It is expected that resources will run thinner as time goes on, but, for now, there’s still a good amount of help to be found.

Many family member’s have to act as a caregiver to a relative, putting their own jobs or own families on hold. Sometimes keeping your loved one at home is a labor of love. The National Alliance for Caregiving estimates one in four adults are providing ongoing care for either an older adult or someone they know who is disabled or very sick. If you’re transitioning into a caregiving role, there are steps you can take to lighten the burden.

If your loved one is a veteran, make sure to check with Veterans Affairs in case they qualify for extra benefits. Diseases, such as Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS, are considered service-related injuries. The VA does not require there to be proof that an ALS diagnosis is the result of a war injury. It’s status as affecting veterans twice as much as the rest of the population makes it notable enough to provide disability benefits.

For those who are not veterans, look into the services provided by Home Health, which are covered by Medicare. Medical supplies, medical equipment, physical therapy, bathing assistance and nursing are just a few of the benefits provided to give home caregivers a break and peace of mind.

If you’re a caregiver to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, check out the Alzheimer's Association. You can get in touch with the Louisiana Chapter at 800-272-3900.

Having someone who knows what you are

going through as a caregiver can take some of the burden off.

Don’t forget about taking care of yourself, despite how hard it may seem or how little time to yourself you have. If you’re struggling with your mental health while taking care of someone else, you can reach out to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, or, in the case of emergency, SAMHSA. Surrounding yourself with people who are supportive and helpful to your mission helps ease caregiver stress as well.

If in-home caregiving isn’t going well, you can always look into private sitters or those with an agency. An alternative would be a nursing home. Whatever you choose, leave guilt behind.

The fact that you have these feelings means you care. At the end of the day, you are trying to do your best for your relative or loved one. But don’t let caregiving come at the expense of your own personal health.

The excitement of a new school year also brings something less welcome: an increase in colds, stomach bugs and other contagious illnesses.

When hundreds of students spend hours together in classrooms, cafeterias, gyms and school buses, germs can spread quickly despite schools' best cleaning efforts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), schoolage children experience an average of six to eight colds each year, making respiratory illnesses one of the leading causes of missed school days.

Frequent hand-to-face contact and close interaction with classmates create the perfect environment for viruses and bacteria to circulate.

Dr. Jay Marque, owner and medical director of Lake Charles Urgent Care, says many parents underestimate how easily germs spread during the school day. "Many illnesses are spread through contaminated hands and frequently touched surfaces. Students touch desks, door handles, keyboards, water fountains, sports equipment and countless other shared items throughout the day. If they then touch their eyes, nose or mouth before washing their hands, germs have an easy way into the body."

While schools work hard to disinfect classrooms, preventing illness ultimately depends on good hygiene habits. "The reality is that teachers can't monitor every student's handwashing throughout the day," Dr. Marque says. "That's why it's so important for parents to reinforce those habits at home until they become second nature."

Dr. Marque says families should also be aware of some of the biggest "germ hot spots" students encounter each day.

School Buses: School buses transport dozens of students in close quarters each day. Handrails, seat backs and windows are touched repeatedly, and backpacks placed on bus floors can carry germs back into the home.

Classrooms: Students constantly share materials, pass papers, borrow supplies and touch common surfaces such as desks, keyboards, light 14

switches and door handles. These high-touch areas can harbor germs throughout the day if students don't practice good hand hygiene.

Lunchrooms: The cafeteria combines crowded seating, shared tables and frequent hand-tomouth contact. Children may also share snacks or drinks, making lunchtime one of the easiest opportunities for illnesses to spread.

Locker Rooms and Athletic Facilities: Sports equipment, locker room benches, weight equipment, wrestling mats and shared protective gear are all high-touch surfaces.

Cuts, scrapes and close physical contact during sports can also increase the risk of certain skin infections if proper hygiene isn't practiced.

Band Rooms: Shared musical instruments, particularly brass and woodwind instruments, can harbor bacteria if they are not cleaned regularly. Students should always use their own mouthpiece whenever possible and follow recommended cleaning procedures.

Although parents can't control every situation their children encounter at school, they can help establish healthy routines that significantly reduce the risk of illness.

"Children learn by repetition," says Dr. Marque.

"The more parents talk about handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and not sharing drinks or utensils, the more likely those

behaviors become everyday habits."

Dr. Marque recommends these simple prevention tips: • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom and before eating.

• Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol when soap and water aren't available.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of the elbow—not hands.

• Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Pack personal school supplies when possible to reduce sharing.

• Remind children not to share food, drinks, water bottles or eating utensils.

• Keep backpacks off the floor whenever practical and avoid placing them on kitchen counters or dining tables once home.

• Clean reusable water bottles, lunch containers and sports equipment regularly.

• Student athletes should avoid sharing towels, helmets and other personal gear and should shower promptly after practices or games.

• Parents should also keep children home if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or other symptoms of a contagious illness. Returning to school too soon not only slows recovery but also increases the risk of spreading illness to classmates and teachers.

"Simple habits really do make a difference," stresses Dr. Marque. "Teaching children how to protect themselves—and others—helps keep classrooms healthier and gives everyone a better chance of enjoying a successful school year."

Today's cheerleaders are athletes in every sense of the word.

They train year-round, build strength and endurance, and perform demanding stunts, tumbling passes and aerial skills that require precision and teamwork. While the sport has evolved dramatically, so have the risks that come with it.

Although most cheerleading injuries are relatively minor, the sport continues to account for a significant number of emergency room visits each year.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, tens of thousands of cheerleading-related injuries are treated annually. Research also shows that cheerleading has one of the highest rates of catastrophic injuries among girls' high school sports, largely because of the complex stunts and partner skills involved.

"Cheerleading today requires the same level of athleticism as many traditional sports," says Alex Anderson, MD, primary care sports medicine specialist at the Center for Orthopaedics. "Athletes need strength, flexibility, coordination and proper training to perform safely."

Most injuries involve sprains, strains, bruises and fractures, but concussions and more serious head, neck and spine injuries can occur, particularly during stunts, basket tosses and tumbling. Dr. Anderson says the increasing difficulty of routines and the growth of competitive cheer have raised the importance of injury prevention.

"Many athletes now participate in school cheer, all-star programs or competitive teams that train throughout the year," he says. "As skills become more advanced, proper coaching and safety practices 16

become even more important."

Fortunately, many injuries are preventable. Dr. Anderson says successful injury prevention starts with qualified coaching, progressive skill development and adherence to established safety guidelines.

Parents should also take an active role by asking questions before the season begins.

Find out whether coaches are properly trained and certified, whether spotters are used during advanced stunts, what emergency plans are in place and whether athletes practice on appropriate padded surfaces.

Cheer athletes can reduce their injury risk by: • Building strength, flexibility and conditioning before attempting advanced skills.

• Mastering basic techniques before progressing to more difficult stunts.

• Always using trained spotters during partner stunts and pyramids.

• Practicing on appropriate surfaces with properly maintained equipment.

Reporting pain, dizziness or possible concussion symptoms immediately rather than trying to "push through" an injury.

"No sport is completely free of risk," says Dr. Anderson. "But when athletes, coaches and parents all make safety a priority, many injuries can be avoided, allowing cheerleaders to perform with greater confidence."

As cheerleading continues to grow as a competitive athletic sport, the focus should remain on developing skills safely so athletes can enjoy the physical, social and competitive benefits while minimizing the risk of serious injury.

While some of how we age is determined by genetics, there are many things we can do to help enhance our aging and increase longevity. While it's often difficult for people to remove things from their lives, simple steps can be added to help improve aging.

upon muscle strength. Yet, according to Harvard Health, the human body tends to lose 3-5% of muscle mass per decade after the age of 30. Less muscle mass leads to weakness and increases the risks of falls and fractures. To maintain muscle mass, consume enough protein each day and do workouts that include weight training or bearing exercises each week.

"If you choose just a few things to add to your life, those will help when it comes to aging," explains Jennifer Scherer, a registered dietitian nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, certified personal trainer, and owner of Fredericksburg Fitness Studio.

“There are many things people can do to be healthier, but you don't have to feel overwhelmed by them all. Pick a couple to start with, and you can always add and modify later."

Get social. Loneliness is something many people experience as they age. According to the NIH, loneliness in older adults is a public health risk.

Loneliness is associated with an increased risk for depression, anxiety, suicide, dementia, heart failure and other issues. Make a point to be socially involved each week, whether by joining a book club, playing card games with the neighbors, or walking the dog and stopping to talk to neighbors.

There are plenty of small things people can do that will add up to big results for their health as they age. These things play an important role not only in one's longevity but also in the quality of life they have in their years.

Engage the brain. Healthy aging includes keeping the brain active and sharp. Make a point to do things that will engage the brain, such as reading, putting together puzzles, learning something new, using the opposite hand to do routine tasks, etc. Brain health impacts cognitive health, motor function, emotional function, tactile function and sensory function, making it well worth the effort to keep the brain engaged.

Here are five simple things that everyone can do to enhance healthy aging: Maintain muscle. Being independent and maintaining mobility as one ages is dependent

Be optimistic. Looking at the bright side of things is good for one's health. The National Institute on Aging reports that optimism is linked to longevity and well-being. They found that being optimistic is linked to a longer lifespan in women, leading to better emotional health in older men. They report that several studies show optimism is linked to living longer, and it is something people can choose to do. One can train themselves to become more optimistic by practicing mindfulness, meditation, exercising, journaling, practicing gratitude, etc.

Practice Pilates. The results of a research study were published in the European Journal of Health, Psychology and Education that looked at the benefits of those over 60 doing Pilates. They found that there were improvements in balance, lower limb strength, pulmonary function, and that it helped those with short-term memory deficits and improved overall quality of life. Researchers concluded that Pilates contributes to a healthier and more active aging.

“Start small if you need to, but just get started on something,” added Scherer. “Every positive change you make is worth the time and effort.”

AUGUST IS NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH

The First Lesson in Motherhood For many new mothers, breastfeeding is both rewarding and challenging.

While it is a natural way to nourish a baby, it doesn't always come naturally. Questions about latching, milk supply, feeding schedules and discomfort are common, especially during the first few weeks. The good news is with the right guidance and support, many breastfeeding challenges can be overcome.

"New mothers experience so many emotions after delivery," says Christa O'Neal, RN, certified lactation counselor and maternal child educator at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital.

"They're excited, exhausted and learning something completely new. It's easy to become overwhelmed by advice from family, friends and social media. Sometimes all it takes is talking with someone who can help."

"Every mom's breastfeeding journey is different," she says. "What works for one family may not work for another, and that's okay. Our goal is to help each mother find an approach that works best for her and her baby."

O'Neal works with mothers who choose to breastfeed during their hospital stay and remains available after they go home if questions or concerns arise. She also teaches breastfeeding as part of the hospital's prenatal education classes, helping expectant mothers understand what to expect before their baby arrives.

"If breastfeeding hurts, that's usually a sign that something needs to be adjusted," O'Neal explains. "Often it's the baby's latch or positioning, and small changes can make a big difference. Many common breastfeeding problems have simple solutions."

One of the biggest misconceptions, she says, is that breastfeeding is supposed to be painful or that new mothers simply have to "push through" the first several weeks.

Fatigue is another challenge, especially as newborns nurse frequently during the early

weeks. O'Neal encourages mothers to view feeding time as an opportunity to rest.

"Find a comfortable place to sit, stay hydrated, have a healthy snack nearby and let yourself slow down," she says. "As your baby grows, feedings usually become more efficient and both mom and baby settle into a routine."

Breastfeeding offers well-established health benefits for both mother and baby. Breast milk provides the ideal balance of nutrients while also delivering antibodies that help protect infants from infections and support healthy immune system development. Research also shows that breastfeeding is associated with lower risks of ear infections, respiratory illnesses and certain gastrointestinal infections during infancy.

For mothers, breastfeeding helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and burns additional calories during milk production. Longer durations of breastfeeding have also been associated with a lower lifetime risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Most importantly, O'Neal wants mothers to know they don't have to figure everything out on their own.

"Breastfeeding isn't about being perfect," she says. "It's about learning together with your baby and knowing it's

okay to ask for help. Having encouragement and expert support can make all the difference."

Devin Fontenot grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and originally had plans to work in law enforcement. He was pursing a degree in criminal justice at McNeese while there was a large stipend available for police officers with a college degree. During his last semester, the stipend program ended. Faced with a pivot in direction at the end of his college career, he decided on law school. “I wanted a career where i could provide a good life for my family and future children and that would provide me the availability to be present for my future children’s events,” he says. A law degree would allow him to still be able to protect people, just in a different way.

Fontenot attended and graduated from Southern University Law Center, among the top 10 students in his class. Ironically, while in law school he reaffirmed that he would not choose family law as a specialty. As life would have it, opportunities led him to family law anyway.

“When I graduated from law school, I was looking for a job in Lake Charles and was hired by John Green, Jr., who took a chance on me,” he says. "I consider John one of the best in town and he was a great mentor. His main area of practice was family law.

After working family law cases for five years, I developed the skills, knowledge and love for family law.” He would work with John 24

Green, Jr. for five years before branching out to found his own law firm.

Fontenot specializes in family law, criminal defense and personal injury cases. As far as his family law experience goes, he says, “It’s a tough area to practice, but the highs are high and it provides me with a sense of satisfaction I haven’t found in other areas of law.”

Fontenot is also the contract attorney for OASIS a Safehaven, a nonprofit domestic abuse shelter.

“My role with them is prosecuting the protective orders filed by survivors of domestic violence.

I’ve always been one who stands up for those being trampled on or abused, and acting as their

attorney allows me to advocate for those who have not been able to protect themselves prior to my involvement.”

What Fontenot wants everyone to know is the success of a case is highly dependent on the facts.

Therefore, even the best attorney might not be able to land you a win if you proceed in court.

“In family court, ‘losing’ is a relative term,” he says. “Having a good attorney helps, but in the end, the facts of the case are what matter.

The lawyer’s job is to present the facts to the court while putting the client in the best favorable position. In cases where the facts are not favorable to a client, a good lawyer will advise the client to get out ahead of the situation

and fix the issues prior to court. If the client listens, the ‘loss’ in court can be mitigated significantly.

I’ve seen cases where a client rehabilitated a situation where they would have lost custody to maintaining/regaining custody simply because they followed the advice of the attorney.”

Choosing your lawyer carefully is one the most important aspects relevant to your situation.

Fontenot advises, “Do not choose a ‘yes man’ attorney who will agree with you without question. You’re looking for someone who will tell you how it is and be up front with you if you are not doing what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to consult with multiple attorneys if you’re unsure.”

Before Rachel Couvillion represented injury victims in Southwest Louisiana, she spent years on the other side of the table, defending the insurance companies she now goes up against. Tim Andreas Celebrates

25 Year as a Financial Advisor

Tim Andreas is commemorating a significant milestone: 25 years as a financial advisor. Initially associated with Prudential Financial, he embraced independence 13 years ago by founding Global Asset Management Group.

His firm has consistently been recognized as one of Louisiana's top advisory practices for nine consecutive years and ranks among the elite nationally within the Raymond James framework.

Achieving this level of success has not been without its challenges. Andreas began his academic journey at McNeese State University, initially pursuing a degree in the medical field.

However, after discovering that his studies did not ignite his passion, he consulted a friend who was a financial advisor and ultimately switched his major. Just prior to graduating, while interviewing for

the financial services industry, he faced a turbulent market with Black Monday in October 1987, which led him to explore alternative career paths.

In 2001, at the age of 36, Andreas answered the call to the financial advisory landscape only to confront another market crisis—the tech bubble burst. During this pivotal time, he suffered a heart attack while in New York City for a threeweek training session on June 17, which coincidentally fell on Father’s Day. Following a two-and-a-halfweek hospital stay, during which he celebrated his 37th birthday, he returned to complete his training in September, just a couple weeks after the September 11 attacks.

Health challenges persisted, but Andreas remained resolute. His early career at Prudential morphed into acquisitions from banking institutions that transitioned through various iterations before becoming part of Wells Fargo.

Discontent with the conflicts of interest inherent in bank-owned financial advisory firms, Andreas opted for independence through Raymond James. His client-focused approach led to the establishment of Global Asset Management Group.

Now, after 25 years in the industry, (12 years in Wall Street/Banking wealth management firms and 13 years leading his independent practice), Andreas underscores the values that set Global Asset apart.

“We work harder than anyone else,” he asserts. “We dedicate more hours to ensure our clients receive the highest level of service. THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM AT PORT WONDER LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO BUILD INCLUSIVE OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND The Children’s Museum at Port Wonder launched its “Let’s All Play: A Campaign for Outdoor Wonder” to raise funds to build an inclusive outdoor playground. This $1 million investment will transform an underutilized area into an exciting destination with inclusive play structures, accessible safety surfacing, canopy shades, benches and fences necessary to ensure a safe environment for families to enjoy for generations. Collectively local Kiwanis clubs and Phillips 66 in partnership with Families for Inclusion have donated $72,500. The playground will begin construction once 20 percent of the total $1,000,000 goal is collected.

In its first year alone, The Children’s Museum welcomed more than 80,000 visitors, while the Port Wonder facility, shared with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Nature and Science Center, welcomed more than 120,000 guests. The museum grew to more than 1,500 member families and hosted more than 8,000 students, teachers and parents through field trips from 17 Louisiana parishes and four Texas counties.

PROJECT BUILD A FUTURE TO PRESENT FREE ANNUAL HEIRSHIP SIMPLIFIED COMMUNITY WORKSHOP Project Build a Future, in partnership with the Southwest Louisiana Law Center, will host the third annual Heirship Simplified: Your Property, Your Legacy from 8:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Riverside Park Community Center, 1701 Fitzenreiter Road.

The free educational event is designed to help Southwest Louisiana residents understand how to protect their homes, property and family legacy through estate planning and informed legal decision-making — and some will earn a free will by attending.

Many families unknowingly face legal and financial challenges because property ownership has not been properly transferred from one generation to the next. Heirship issues can delay homeownership, complicate inheritances, create family disputes and even place property at risk of tax sales or blight. The workshop brings together legal, financial, housing and community experts to explain these topics in clear, practical language that anyone can understand.

SOWELA OFFERING FREE FIBER OPTICS TRAINING SOWELA Technical Community College is offering individuals 18 years or older free Fiber Optics Technician training for its next training cohort. There’s a lot of hope in the Big Easy.

After starting last season with the wrong quarterback, rookie head coach Kellen Moore righted the ship and gave the other rookie the reins, and Tyler Shough took a team that was 1-7 and averaging 16 points a game and finished out 5-4, throwing for over 300 yards twice, with weapons that weren’t on anyone’s fantasy team.

The Saints have taken that momentum into the off-season, first by signing Jennings’ own Travis Etienne, Jr. to take the load off of aging Alvin Kamara in the running game. Kamara missed the end of the season and hasn’t really gotten to play in a Shough led offense. The signing of Etienne now gives Shough two pass-catching running backs, which should keep defenses honest no matter who’s in the backfield.

The wide receivers were next, with the Saints’ 1st Round pick going to Jordyn Tyson, a multi-talented Arizona State standout. His biggest concern is staying healthy, as his college career was injury heavy.

But his skill set should blend well with Chris Olave at the one, and a three-headed attack of Tyson and Olave with Juwan Johnson at tight end. Etienne or Kamara coming out of the backfield should give Shough plenty of options he didn’t have last season.

The defense was the one bright spot last season, ranking in the Top 10 in both 3rd Down Defense as well as Redzone, even after being put in bad spots due to a middling offense. Cam Jordan has declared 2026 his final season and will lead the defense, bolstered by Chase

2nd Round draft pick Christen Miller should see a lot of work in rotation at nose tackle, and second year safety Jonas Sanker is another player to watch.

The schedule for the Saints starts with two tough games on the road against teams that underperformed in the playoffs last year, the Lions and the Ravens, and are probably looking for something to prove.

Don’t be surprised if the season starts off 0-2. That’s not the end of the world by any stretch.

After that, the Saints could realistically win their next seven games and be sitting 7-2 with a tough road game against another much improved team, the Chicago Bears, in Week 11. Then those final weeks will determine if the Saints go to the playoffs, as four of their last five games are against divisional opponents.

At the same time, this is a division that was won by a team with a losing record last season, so finishing

out against divisional opponents might not be the worst scenario.

With that in mind, it all comes down to the quarterback. If Tyler Shough is “the guy,” go scoop up his rookie cards now. And if you believe New Orleans quarterback expert Drew Brees, who says the Saints “got their guy,” then he is.

And you might be too late on that rookie card.

The moves have been made. The wait is over.

Gone is Brian Kelly, done with unceremoniously after a blowout home loss, 49-25, last season against Texas A&M.

up is Trey’Dez Green at tight end. A 6’7” beast, he could create a lot of mismatches and become Leavitt’s go-to safety valve.

After some wranglings, the Tigers pulled in the most hated man in football, Lane Kiffin, to lead them, stealing him from Ole Miss right on the eve of the college football playoffs.

LSU’s running game is a little more suspect, but Harlem Berry and Caden Durham are two returning Tigers that Kiffin’s offense will lean on when it has to, but really, this is going to be an air raid offense.

Of course, Kiffin is only the most hated man in football if he’s not on your team. In Baton Rouge, he’s been welcomed with a coronation ceremony before even stepping foot in Death Valley. Hopes are high, perhaps even higher than before that fabled 2019 season.

Kiffin wasted no time putting his stamp on the Tigers, bringing in 41 from the transfer portal to construct his team, allowing for competition at every level. He brought in four transfer portal quarterbacks alone.

Leading that pack is Sam Leavitt, formerly of Arizona State, and the presumed starter for Week 1 against Clemson.

It will be interesting to see how fast Leavitt develops a rapport with a new set of receivers. LSU has long been referred to as Wide Receiver U, and they hope to continue that with transfer players such as Jayce Brown from Kansas State and Eugene Wilson III from Florida. Another interesting match-

On defense, Kiffin was able to keep defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who put together a top 15 scoring defense last season despite having an anemic offense. And the transfer portal with pass rushers such as Princewill Umanmielen coming with Kiffin from Ole Miss and Jordan Ross from Tennessee only makes this defense that much more dangerous.

And that’s not even discussing the secondary, which brings back Tamarcus Cooley and pairs him with Ty Benefield of Boise State.

All the ingredients are in the pudding for Kiffin to recreate the magic he was brewing in Oxford last season.

The schedule even seems to be on the Tigers side. After opening the season at home against Clemson, they host La. Tech before going to Ole Miss for a game that everyone in the college football world will have circled.

Assuming LSU can get through the Ole Miss revenge game, they could be 3-0 hosting a Texas A&M team that the Tigers will be looking for some redemption from.

Then the first week of October is nearly a state holiday, as LSU hosts McNeese.

After that, it’s largely smooth sailing, as much as smooth sailing can be in the SEC, with LSU’s biggest expected games against Alabama and Texas both at home, albeit back-to-back.

Then a tough road game against Tennessee in Knoxville and another road game against the Razorbacks will end the season, but by that point, we should know what kind of team that Lane Kiffin has put together, and all hopes will likely be for the college football playoffs.

It’s been a long road for McNeese football fans.

The university brought back Matt Viator last season, the winningest coach in school history, to right a ship which hasn’t seen a season better than middle of the pack since he left.

Last season started rough, with a 1-5 record and a bit of bewilderment, but the team was making progress, and the Cowboys won four of their final six games, culminating with a big win over rival Lamar.

Viator went right back to work in the offseason, hitting the transfer portal hard while also keeping a large amount of the talent he’d already been cultivating, making this 2026 McNeese squad an interesting prospect in terms of a return to glory.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Viator said, noting that once you get past the transfer portal and the NIL deals, coaching is the same. “It’s about relationships. It’s about trust. None of that is any different. The players are as good or better than they’ve ever been.”

As far as what he hopes to see in his second season back, Viator makes it clear.

“We need to have better balance. There were games we threw the ball well, and then we didn’t throw the ball as consistently as we needed to. At the beginning of the season, we didn’t run the ball well, and then we led the conference in rushing at the end of the season. We need better consistency, and we’ve tried to work on that.”

Consistency might be the key word, as Jake Strong returns to lead the Cowboys at quarterback. This is a bigger deal than you may realize given that the Cowboys haven’t had a returning quarterback since Cody Orgeron in 2019. This consistency in leadership is one of those unwritten variables that should have a big impact on McNeese’s success in being able to get the fundamentals right.

Tre'Vonte Citizen

Joining him on offense is Tre’Vonte Citizen, a former standout at Lake Charles Prep who started his college career at Miami before coming back to McNeese. But the past is just prelude, as Citizen is team first, stating that there’s no “personal accolades” that he’s going for.

His fellow leader on defense, Javon Davis, echoes these statements. “I’m trying to finish the season with a bang with my guys. I haven’t won any type of hardware at McNeese, so that’s the goal. I need some type of hardware.

Winning the conference, a ring. After 5 years, I want to try to restore that.”

The path to restoration starts with a tough opponent, as last year’s conference champion Stephen F. Austin comes to Navarre Stadium on August 29th to open the season in the Hall of Fame game.

The Cowboys do have the benefit of opening the season with three home games, also facing Texas Wesleyan and pesky Tarleton State to start. Then it’s almost all conference games for the remainder, with their next opponent, up-and-comer UTRGV.

LEROY PRONIA When asked what being a McNeese fan means to him, Leroy Pronia can’t find enough words to explain the feeling. “McNeese has been a very important part of my life.”

From the first memories of seeing McNeese being built, Leroy’s life has intertwined with McNeese history.

Leroy remembers attending football games at Wildcat Stadium before McNeese had its own field. In the ‘60s, Leroy graduated McNeese with a degree in horticulture and began a landscaping business where he would then plant the first grass in McNeese Stadium.

Being a lifelong fan with season tickets, Leroy has made many lasting friendships with fans and players throughout the years. Alan Heisser, a football player for the Cowboys, is now a part of the family, recently celebrating 50 years of friendship with Leroy.

Being a Cowboy fan means community and family. Leroy has seen three generations graduate from McNeese and looks forward to seeing his great grandchildren grow and become part of the school he loves so much.

It’s hard to ignore his love and McNeese pride. Walk in the doors of Pronia’s Deli and Bakery and you will find a flag hanging proudly over his office entrance as well as many photographs, art and memorabilia. Go Pokes!

PHILLIP TARVER I have loved watching the McNeese Cowboys play in The Hole on Saturday nights in the fall since I was in high school in the 1970s. From Southland Conference championships and the 1997 and 2002 national championship runs to raising my sons and grandsons to love Cowboy football, McNeese has been part of our family’s story for generations. Today, that tradition includes Cowboy Block Party on Friday nights, tailgating on Saturday afternoons and the sound of the cannon celebrating another Cardiac Cowboys victory. I’m thrilled that three generations of our family can now enjoy the new suites together as we cheer on another championship run. Geaux Pokes!

The Blue & Gold Passion started for me as I put on my McNeese Cowboy football uniform in the mid-1980s. I’ve never stopped being a fan since, despite winning seasons and the tough seasons. It means so much to me and my wife, Sharamie, to support our local university that we both attended.

Anyone can see our love for McNeese. Our motorhome for tailgating is filled with McNeese fan gear, as is my man cave at home. The clothes we wear almost daily celebrate McNeese. We support almost all sports at McNeese and have passed this family tradition on to our kids, as well.

A Vernon Parish native with more than three decades of leadership experience spanning government, business, economic development, finance, logistics and higher education policy, Reese holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Commercial Banking with a minor in Economics from the University of Louisiana Monroe. As a local business owner who is involved in chambers in Rapides, Vernon, Beauregard and Calcasieu parishes, Reese served as founding chairman of Fort Polk Progress, an organization born out of the 2008 realignment threat to the installation and dedicated to preserving and strengthening its role as an anchor of the regional economy. He has served in the Louisiana Senate since 2020, representing District 30 across portions of Beauregard, Calcasieu, Rapides and Vernon parishes, building a reputation for advancing economic development, workforce initiatives, fiscal responsibility and business growth statewide.

What led to your interest in public service?

I've always believed that if you have the opportunity to make your community better, you have a responsibility to step forward. My background in business gave me an appreciation for hard work and problem-solving, but it also showed me how

decisions made at the local and state levels affect families, employers and the future of a community. One of the defining moments for my path was helping launch Fort Polk Progress. We brought business leaders, elected officials and community members together with a common purpose, to support one of our region's greatest economic assets. That experience reinforced what I've always believed: when people work together around a shared vision, they can accomplish far more than any one person or organization can alone.

What led to your decision to pursue the position as McNeese President?

This opportunity brought together two things I'm deeply passionate about: serving Southwest Louisiana and investing in the next generation.

Throughout my career, I've seen firsthand the impact McNeese has on our region. Beyond providing an excellent education to students, McNeese develops leaders, strengthens our workforce and drives economic growth. When the opportunity arose, I saw a chance to give back to a university that means so much to this community.

I believe McNeese is uniquely positioned to shape the future of Southwest Louisiana, and I'm honored to help lead the university into its next chapter. My goal is to ensure that future generations have even greater opportunities than those who came before them.

Your resume doesn't follow the traditional path to a university presidency. How will your unique background shape the way you lead?

Higher education is changing. Universities today are expected to do more than educate students; they're expected to drive economic development, build partnerships, attract investment and prepare the workforce for a rapidly evolving economy.

That's why you're seeing more institutions look for leaders with experience beyond academia. I have tremendous respect for the academic side of higher education, and I'm fortunate to work alongside outstanding faculty and academic leaders. My role is to create opportunities and make sure they have the resources they need to succeed. My focus is simple: support our people,

strengthen our partnerships and ensure McNeese continues to be a driving force for Southwest Louisiana.

What leadership lessons from the Legislature will you bring to McNeese?

Lasting success comes from building relationships and bringing people together around a common goal. No meaningful progress happens alone. It takes listening, collaboration and earning trust.

I'll also bring a strong understanding of how state government works and the importance of advocating for higher education. My experience has helped me build relationships across Louisiana that I believe will benefit McNeese as we work to secure resources and create new opportunities for our students and faculty. Most importantly, I've learned that leadership is about serving others. As president, my role is to support our faculty, staff and students by removing obstacles, providing the resources they need and creating an environment where they can thrive.

McNeese already has outstanding people in place.

My job is to help them succeed and continue moving this university forward.

McNeese has experienced tremendous momentum in recent years. What will it take to sustain it? Momentum doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't last unless you're intentional about it. The progress McNeese has made is a credit to the leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters who have worked incredibly hard over the past several years.

My job is to build on that strong foundation, not change course. That means staying focused on recruitment and retention, putting students first, investing in academic excellence and ensuring our programs meet the needs of today's workforce.

What are your top three priorities as you begin your presidency?

First, ensuring McNeese continues to prepare the workforce our region needs. Southwest Louisiana is experiencing tremendous economic growth, and it's our responsibility to make sure students graduate ready to fill those opportunities, whether in industry, healthcare, education, business or

technology, and build meaningful careers right here at home.

Second, strengthening our partnerships with business, industry and the broader community.

McNeese has always played an important role in the economic success of this region. I want to expand collaboration with employers, create more internship and research opportunities and ensure our programs stay aligned with workforce needs.

Third, being a strong advocate for McNeese and for higher education. My experience in the legislature taught me the importance of relationships and securing resources for longterm success. My role is to champion McNeese, providing the funding, facilities and opportunities our faculty and staff need to keep delivering an exceptional education.

How can the Southwest Louisiana community become stronger partners with the university?

McNeese has always been Southwest Louisiana's university, and our future success depends on strong community partnerships. For businesses, that means collaborating with us on workforce development, offering internships and hiring our graduates. And for the community at large, the best way to support McNeese is to stay connected. Attend campus events, cheer on the Cowboys and Cowgirls and take advantage of the educational and cultural opportunities the university offers.

What message would you like to leave with the people of Southwest Louisiana?

We have to keep telling the McNeese story. People across Louisiana and beyond are recognizing what we've known for a long time—that McNeese offers an outstanding education, a close-knit campus experience and graduates who make an impact wherever they go. If we continue delivering results, investing wisely and staying true to who we are, I believe the best days for McNeese are still ahead.

Charles Stevenson is the current director of alumni relations for the McNeese Alumni Association, which was founded in 1947 and incorporated in 1960 as a 501©3 organization.

He volunteered for eight years in various roles before he became director two years ago.

Below he discusses the role of the nonprofit and its impact on McNeese and the local community.

What is the overall goal of the McNeese Alumni Association?

We support scholarships, undergraduate research, student activities, homecoming, reunions, student alumni association, McNeese Mavericks, alumni chapters and student recruitment.

What are your top three immediate priorities?

We seek to revive community and campus engagement, bridge the gap between different alumni generations by getting the younger alumni involved earlier and continue to build up confidence in the Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association is about much more than football tailgates. Throughout the year, we support McNeese by helping fund initiatives that strengthen the student experience and contribute to enrollment growth and stability.

THE THREE

Musketeers

If you attend a McNeese football home game, you’ll likely see three McNeese alumni on the sidelines taking photos of the Cowboys. All volunteers, Dennis Thibodeaux, Raymond Stewart and Richard “Doc” Martin embody the famous saying from The Three Musketeers: “All for one, and one for all.” As great friends who bonded on their love of McNeese football and sports photography, you can usually see them comparing photos during games to see if any of them got “the” photo.

DOC MARTIN Doc Martin was the first of the trio to start photographing McNeese sports. “A friend of mine started a website in 1999 called gocowboys. com,” Doc says. “He wrote columns and I was thinking of something I could do, so I got an old film camera and started taking pictures, getting them developed and scanning them.”

Since both equipment and his skills have improved over the years, Doc’s shots have continued to improve.

Even so, he says he is never satisfied.

The goal is always to get a better photo, although he has plenty of

favorites over the years.

Doc’s first football game as a fan was when his uncle brought him to watch a game at Wildcat Stadium when he was 14. He would later graduate from McNeese, attend dental school at LSU and practice in Sulphur for 47 years.

“Being down on the field close to the action” is Doc’s favorite part about photographing the Cowboys. He also has photographed McNeese basketball, baseball, softball and track, although he considers football and basketball as the two top sports he loves to photograph.

RAYMOND STEWART Raymond Stewart became a McNeese sports photographer due to operating PhotoExpress in Lake Charles in the ‘90s when he would develop photos for sports information development. He would later offer his services to McNeese.

“There’s a lot of luck involved in getting ‘that’ shot,” Raymond says. “You gotta be quick and move from one subject to another. You don’t know where the play is going, so you have to anticipate what will happen next.”

As Raymond only lives about a block away from Navarre Stadium, he can be in the middle of the action in no time. He takes photos of just about every sport at McNeese and provides many for media use.

BRING FRIDAY FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Raymond shoots for both McNeese home games and away games. For other sports, if the games are nearby, he usually attends. “It’s just fun to do and keeps you active,” he says about his passion for McNeese photography.

When it comes to football, his favorite part is “the excitement and seeing the expressions of the students. There’s also the feel of being down on the field itself and seeing everything up close.”

As to his favorite photo, it’s of a softball game when the shortstop is leaning horizontally above the ground to catch the ball.

DENNIS THIBODEAUX Dennis Thibodeaux has been taking photographs of McNeese sports for 15 years. It began when his daughter and some of the guys he hung out with during McNeese tailgates reached out to the university about Dennis’ love for the Pokes and photography. He was then allowed on the sidelines/courtside of football and basketball games to shoot his shot.

When starting out Dennis says he learned a lot of technique from Doc and American Press photographers.

Two years ago, he was able to attend the NCAA basketball tournament where McNeese beat Clemson in Providence, Rhode Island. His favorite part to photograph was the locker room celebration after the game.

When asked if he has a favorite photograph he has taken over the years, Dennis says he gets a new favorite every year. His favorite part of taking photographs on the football field is the ability to “witness the game up close and get good seats on the sidelines.

Reinforcing his love for McNeese, Dennis’ two daughters graduated from McNeese, and he now has five grandchildren attending the university.

Football fans will be able to get an up-close look at the Cowboys on Saturday, August 15 at 6:00 p.m. The event is free for the public. It will begin with the Cowboys' preseason practice at 6:00 p.m. and will also include vendors, games and the latest McNeese merchandise.

Fans will also have the chance to get closer to the team with on-field access and player autographs.

Along with football, Fan Fest will include plenty of activities for the whole family. Guests can enjoy food trucks, jump houses, face painting, local vendors and more.

A special vendor area will also be set up, featuring local businesses, artists, makers and farmers showcasing their products. The Farmers’ Market-style setup gives local creators a chance to connect with the McNeese community.

I have been truly overwhelmed by the warm welcome I have received from McNeese and Southwest Louisiana.

Their enthusiasm for McNeese is impressive and irresistible! I’m looking forward to meeting more students when the fall semester begins.

Spending time with so many faculty and staff members only reinforced what I already believed about McNeese—they are an incredibly talented, professional and passionate group of people who genuinely care about our students and this university.

Pre-1910 Archive at McNeese State University Will Shed Light on Missing Local History Parish Clerk of Court, and the Council on Library and Information Resources, the Loftin-Levingston Title Records arrived at McNeese Archives and Special Collections in Frazar Memorial Library on June 30, 2026.

McNeese State University’s Frazar Memorial Library now houses the Loftin-Levingston Title Records, an archive of courthouse records filed in the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse and other maps and property records that date prior to the Fire of 1910.

Loftin Law Group, LLC., and their subsidiary, Armor Title, is donating the collection, valued at over $2,000,000. Steve and Kenny Franks maintained the collection over the years. Through the support of The University of Texas at Austin, the Calcasieu

The Lake Charles Fire of 1910 destroyed valuable courthouse records needed to understand the evolution of industry, the history of slavery and environmental changes in Southwest Louisiana. The fire erased early land, title and property records that kept public audiences and historians from fully contextualizing the region.

However, Levingston Land and Title Company, now Armor Title, recorded abstracts and early photocopies of courthouse records beginning in the 1840s. This company also filed early government survey maps, agriculture and industry maps, and cemetery records.

These records relate to Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis Parishes, given that these parishes were combined as Imperial Calcasieu before 1912.

Dr. Megan Poole, a McNeese alumna and an assistant professor and Humanities Institute Faculty Affiliate at The University of Texas at Austin, is leading a team of research and community collaborators on the project. Poole received a $289,998 Digitizing Hidden Collections grant to create a physical archive of the records at McNeese and produce a public website that digitizes and presents a selection of the materials to public audiences. The website will allow the public and researchers nationwide to access interactive story maps and genealogies for descendant communities through the website.

New Deans at McNeese Dr. Srinivasan “Vasan” Ambatipati has been named dean of the McNeese State University College of Engineering and Sciences, and Dr. Jan Robichaux has been named dean of McNeese State University’s Burton College of Education.

Ambatipati received his doctorate degree in chemical engineering from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, and his master’s degree from McNeese. He joined the McNeese faculty in 2019 and became head of the department of engineering and computer science in 2022.

“I'm incredibly excited and deeply honored. McNeese has shaped my career—from being a student here to serving as faculty, department head

and now dean,” Ambatipati said. “It's a privilege to lead a college with such talented faculty, staff and students.”

Robichaux received her doctorate in education theory, policy and practice from Louisiana State University and her Master of Business Administration and bachelor's degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She joined the faculty at McNeese in 2011.

With more than 20 years in higher education, Robichaux has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in online, face-to-face and hybrid formats.

At McNeese she taught educational technology, distance learning, k-12 technology education, education

leadership and teacher preparation.

Additionally, she taught business, management, marketing, hospitality and human resource management courses at Louisiana State University Eunice and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as dean of the Burton College of Education. It is an exciting time for both the H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology and the department of education professions, and I am eager to work alongside our faculty, staff, students and community partners as we continue to grow and innovate, building upon the strong foundation already in place,” Robichaux said.

Empowering the Next Generation Through Partnership One of the greatest strengths of the Just Imagine SWLA 50-Year Resilience Master Plan is its ability to bring people together around a shared vision for the future.

While infrastructure projects, planning efforts and public investments are critical to building a more resilient Southwest Louisiana, meaningful community partnerships are what transform those plans into lasting impact. One such partnership with the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) Video Production Program is helping students discover the power of storytelling while connecting them to the future of the community they call home.

Through this collaboration, students have had the opportunity to explore several of the Just Imagine catalytic projects, gaining firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities shaping Southwest Louisiana.

Rather than simply learning about resilience in a classroom, students have documented these initiatives through professional-quality journalism and video production, using their creativity to share stories that matter.

One of the partnership’s earliest successes centered on the Coastal Protection catalytic project. After learning about the importance of protecting Louisiana’s coast and restoring natural systems, student Jacob Jewell created a documentary inspired by what he had learned called The Forgotten

Coast. His film earned secondplace honors in an international competition, an achievement that reflects both his talent and the impact of connecting students with meaningful, real-world issues. Today, Jewell is pursuing a degree in broadcast meteorology and continues to explore the relationship between weather and the ways it transforms life across coastal and Southwest Louisiana.

The students also told the story of the Resilient Housing catalytic project. Through interviews and a visit to LSU’s LaHouse, they explored innovative building techniques and neighborhood design strategies that can help homes and communities better withstand future storms and flooding. Their reporting also highlighted the upcoming Kingman

Crossing neighborhood, developed

by Project Build a Future, which will serve as a real-world demonstration of many of the resilient housing principles and recommendations outlined in the Just Imagine Master Plan. Their outstanding coverage earned a First-Place Hard News Reporting Award from the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association, demonstrating how community partnerships create meaningful educational experiences and increase public awareness of innovative housing solutions.

Most recently, students turned their attention to the Strong Downtowns initiative, documenting efforts to strengthen downtown districts and create vibrant places where residents and businesses can thrive. Their work captures not only the physical transformation

of these communities but also the collaboration and longterm vision required to ensure successful revitalization.

For CTEC instructor Britney Glaser, the partnership has provided students with experiences that extend well beyond technical skills.

“Just Imagine SWLA has given our students at CTEC opportunities to discover the power of storytelling through real community issues and projects,” said Glaser. “These teens have learned of work going on behind the scenes to make their community a better place to live now and when they are older.

They have learned of challenges our region faces—but more importantly, of transformative

opportunities for change that include their voices.”

The partnership between Just Imagine SWLA and the CTEC Video Production Program demonstrates that resilience is about more than projects and plans; it is about people. By engaging students in authentic community stories, Just Imagine is helping develop informed, engaged young leaders who understand both the challenges facing Southwest Louisiana and the opportunities they have to help shape its future. Through their cameras, creativity and curiosity, these students are preserving today’s stories while inspiring tomorrow’s changemakers.

McNeese Team Store Has Everything You Need for Cowboy Football Season

It’s that time of year again—football season! To celebrate the return of the McNeese Cowboys on the field, stop by the McNeese Team store, now conveniently located off campus.

If you haven’t been to the spirit store since it moved to its new location two years ago, look for the big blue McNeese chair on Sale Road. Behind the building is a spacious parking lot. Walk in the door and you’ll be greeted with a much larger space and a huge increase in inventory.

Tracey Pearce, director of the team store, says she wants everyone to think of it as a community store, not solely a university store as it was viewed while on campus. “We want to hear from the public and get feedback on what they want. There’s this stigma that our merchandise is too expensive, but our primary goal is to carry affordable options for everyone. We have the big brands, but we also have budget-friendly tees.”

Ultimately, people visiting the store want to support McNeese athletics.

Inventory includes everything you’ll need for a football game: jerseys, foam fingers, cowbells, tattoos, glitter, thermoses, hats, clear bags, stadium seats…. If you can think of it, the store probably has it, and if they don’t, you’re providing the exact feedback they’re looking for.

Pearce says top sellers are jerseys, hoodies and sweatshirts due to football season occurring during the transition of seasons. Once those cooler nights start filtering in, fans naturally start pulling out their warmer items.

The store also has a men’s, women’s and kid’s section. Think ¼ zip pullovers, cowboy boots in McNeese colors and little dresses for the small fans in your life. Recently added is a home section which features koozies, cutting boards and coasters.

Pearce says one exciting item coming soon is a jacket with a custom design in a style specific to McNeese. Also, look forward to throw blankets and other on-trend and cozy items.

Store hours have changed. The doors are open all day on Fridays, as well as other weekdays. On home game Saturdays, the store will be open from noon4:00 p.m. and reopen at the game through their merchandise truck. Monday through Friday hours are 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at 501 E. Sale Road. South Coast Book Festival Returns for Its Third Year

The South Coast Book Festival returns for its third year on Saturday, September 12, at the Lake Charles Event Center, bringing together readers, writers and book lovers from across the Gulf Coast for a day filled with literary discovery and community celebration.

With this year's theme, "A World of Wonder," the festival will feature more than 75 authors and vendors, offering attendees the opportunity to meet authors, purchase signed books, discover new reads and connect with others who share a love of literature.

The festival offers something for every age and interest, including author presentations, book signings, children's activities, interactive exhibits and a variety of literary experiences throughout the day. Young writers

Ask almost anyone who plays mahjong and they will tell you once you try the game, it sucks you in and you’re never the same.

Mahjong is a traditional Chinese tile game which originated during the Qing Dynasty in the mid-nineteenth century. Described as what you would get if you combined traditional card games and dominos, mahjong is a game of strategy and skill.

Mahjong is named for the sound the tiles make when shuffled. Meaning ‘sparrow,’ you will find many references to the natural world in the game including wind, bamboo and flowers. The dragon, perhaps the most recognizable symbol from Chinese culture, makes an appearance as well.

Ironically, the game became vastly popular in the United States in the 1920s when Joseph Babcock learned how to play in China and sold imported mahjong kits through the company he established in California—Mah-Jongg Sales Company. Mahjong also became popular with Jewish Americans in New York City in the 1930s. Mahjong began its upward trajectory again about a hundred years after it was widely introduced to America during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Backed by the American Alzheimer’s Association due to its cognitive benefits, it’s also

an opportunity to gain community as there are many mahjong groups across the country.

Local mahjong teacher, Robyn Duncan, learned how to play when she turned 40. Her mom had always played the game with her girlfriends, and Robyn was looking for a form of self-care. At that time, mahjong players were not plentiful in Southwest Louisiana.

She eventually found out that the Bridge Club hosted mahjong on Mondays and played there until last year when the club was put up for sale.

Since COVID-19, mahjong’s popularity has skyrocketed. Robyn believes it’s a game that appeals to all generations in a time when we are trying to rebuild our social connections and set our minds to something other than scrolling on our phones.

Robyn is now teaching her 37th class. One of mahjong's appeals is it’s an inexpensive hobby. (You buy a mahjong set and can sign up with the National Mah Jongg League for a card that has new hands to play each year.)

When playing you build walls two tiles deep, discard tiles in an attempt to build a hand and keep the competition on the offensive.

Mahjong Spawns a Merch Gold Mine

Join a mahjong game and you’ll notice that all the players who have been at it for a while have mahjong-related accessories.

It could be something as simple as a canvas pouch or a reusable water bottle. A keepsake could also be a mahjong kit that costs several hundred or thousands of dollars. (The really expensive kits use very fine and collectible materials.)

If you’re looking to learn or host a mahjong party privately at your home, both Mimosa and Gordon’s Drug Store sell mahjong kits. Mimosa even has mahjong napkins and snack cups. There’s definitely a growing market for mahjong accessories as more and more people get mahj fever. And some of the accessories, such as themed candles, mahjong pajamas or a journal that says, “People I Beat at Mahjong,” make perfect gifts for the next white elephant party you attend.
