Urban Farming Takes Root in Downtown Shreveport
M
ichael Billings doesn’t look like the stereotypical farmer, and Cotton Street Farms doesn’t look like a typical farm. Idyllic country vistas are replaced with the sound of air and water circulators and the glow of LED lighting. But don’t let the unassuming urban facade tucked into a re-purposed telecom switching facility fool you, unless you are growing your own food, there is nowhere in the Ark-LaTex that you can buy fresher produce. “We are proving small farm sustainability, growing food in neighborhoods and selling to those neighbors” says Michael, “you don’t have to have a thousand acres to produce healthy food.” Cotton Street Farms produces a wide range of leafy greens like lettuce, kale, Swiss chard as well as a selection of cooking herbs like basel, thyme, dill, and oregano. They also offer micro greens that pack a nutritional punch that can’t be matched and a always evolving selection of products from other ethical local producers of fruits, vegetables, fresh roasted coffee, local honey, meats and dairy. All at prices that are equal to or better than the prices from big box grocery retailers. Cotton Street Farms works hand in hand with local chefs, restaurants and heath professionals to grow produce with freshness that can’t be matched. “We’re starting to have and impact on our community, especially in the sprouts and micro-greens area.” All the produce grown at Cotton Street Farms uses the hydroponic method of growing. This insures that the plants get a precise amount of
water, nutrients, and light to maximize the yield and nutritional density of every plant, all without the use of any pesticides or fungicides needed for outdoor growing. The hydroponic process also avoids any water waist, soil depletion or use of heavy farm equipment. Unlike tradition farming, the growing season is 365 days a year, “I get a crop every 60 days, and we are planting every 5 days”, “in a traditional farm in this area you may get 5 harvests a year, at Cotton Street we get 15” says Michael. Cotton Street Farms has been a four year endeavor for Billings, over the first two years they both acquired and refit the building, a former Version switching hub that had sat dormant for years. After fitting out the building and preparing the farm, Cotton Street has been selling to the public since January of 2020. So why buy your salad greens from Cotton Street? In a word, freshness. “It’s not lettuce season in Louisiana... so buy the time you pick up a head of lettuce from your local grocery, it’s been dead for over a week, packed and unpacked several times and trucked in from a different geographic location”, “during this process the lettuce picks up contaminates and loses nutritional value” says Billings. “When you buy from Cotton Street, that plant was alive 5 minuets ago, it’s still circulating it’s nutrients”, “when you order lettuce, I walk over to the growing tower, cut it to order and place it in your mix, it’s never refrigerated or stored” If fresh, clean produce is on your household menu, you owe it to yourself to visit Cotton Street Farms.

Louisiana Sports Hall Of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum Presents Mammy and the Underground Railroad: The second program in a three-part series Join the Louisiana Sports Hall Of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. as Gaynell Brady, founder/educator of Our Mammy’s, shares the stories of African Americans in Louisiana through the lens of her ancestors. Mammy and the Underground Railroad explores the ways “Mammy” served as a conductor on the Underground Railroad and how freedom seekers found their way to liberty through this network. This program includes storytelling, a scavenger hunt, and other activities for families and children ages six and older and accompanied by an adult. State regulations regarding masks and physical distancing will be followed. Call (318) 357-2492 for more information. www.louisianastatemuseum.org
About Our Mammy’s Our Mammy’s shares the stories of Louisiana’s African Americans through the lens of the founder’s ancestors—what they contributed, how they survived, why it’s important—so that future generations can understand what was sacrificed and be inspired by all the ancestors have accomplished in the face of adversity. About Louisiana Sports Hall Of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum Louisiana Sports Hall Of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum combines two previous Natchitoches museums, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Old Courthouse Museum. The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame celebrates accomplishments by Louisiana athletes, coaches and sports stars, while the Northwest Louisiana History Museum celebrates the region's culture and history, all in a dazzling museum complex in historic downtown Natchitoches.
Free and open to the public. This project was supported through funding provided by Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc.
