Each fall, the West Bowie County Rotary Club hosts a marathon and half-marathon fundraiser for the club. The date for this year’s race is October 9th, 2021. Participants may walk or run the entire course of the half-marathon, or they may team up with two or four others to transverse half or a quarter of the course. The marathon course is run only and there is a time-limit of six hours. This half-marathon race, our sixth annual, is being run from De Kalb, Texas, to New Boston, Texas. The marathon race, our first, is being run from Avery, Texas through De Kalb, Texas to finish in New Boston, Texas. These races are run on the northeast terminus of the longest (130 miles) hike/bike trail in Texas. The Northeast Texas trail runs from Trailhead Pavilion in New Boston, Texas, to Farmersville, Texas. In the late 1990’s, two railroads, the Union Pacific and the Chaparral, decided to cease active service and “rail-banked” this stretch of rail bed making it available for non-motorized activities. A post-race celebration will take place at the finish line at the Trailhead Pavilion in New Boston. Located downtown New Boston at #1 Trail Head Park Plaza. Home of the NB Visitor Center/3 Bostons Museum. Park Maintained by the City of New Boston.T & P Trail Head Park got its name from Texas and Pacific Railroad. The Savior DiD NoT Die iN vaiN
Consider how Christ, the Son of God, by Himself, has certainly purged His people from their sins. He was delivered up for their offenses, and He was raised again for their justification. Try to grasp the extent to which He saved and redeemed (before God) the people on whose behalf He had been smitten of God. He redeemed them as effectively as a benefactor who secured the release from prison of a debtor, by first assuming responsibility for his debt and then cancelling it BY PAYING IT IN FULL! Gaze in wonder and adoration on this sovereign love of God, who loved those whom it pleased Him to love. He was not pleased simply to invite them to be saved, nor to make salvation possible for them. No, the Lord has actually saved and redeemed them in the Lord Jesus Christ because He, being one with them, passed through the hell and condemnation that should have been theirs. HE HAS GIVEN THEM HIS LIFE, HAVING TAKEN THEIR DEATH ON HIMSELF! In view of this salvation that has been accomplished by our Savior, I am not afraid to say to you who are near to entering His presence, “Rejoice in anticipation of the glory which you already possess by faith; for this is the pledge which God Himself has given to the elect of His sovereign love, which was already theirs in Christ Jesus even before time began.” I speak of a salvation which has either already been accomplished by our Savior, or else it never will be.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown How A Series Of Unsolved Murders In Post-War Texarkana Spawned The “Slasher” Movie Genre.
H
alloween is just around the corner, and for many sitting down in front of the television and watching classic horror films is all part of the fun. But did you know that films like Halloween (1978) and Friday the 13th (1980) were directly inspired by a low budget film about a series of Texarkana murders that took place in 1946. The Phantom Killer Murders: 1946 On February 22, 1946 Mary Jeanne Larey and Jimmy Hollis were attacked while parked in a secluded spot off Robinson road. Both survived the attack with Larey suffering sexual assult and minor injuries and Hollis escaped with a fractured skull. The attacker wore a sack hood preventing the victims from making a positive identification of the assailant. Local law enforcement doubted the couple’s story convinced that they knew the attacker and were covering for him to hide his identity. March 24, 1946 things took a much darker turn as a motorist found the bodies of Polly Ann Moore and Richard L. Griffin were found on a local lovers lane on Rich Road, both had been shot at close range to the back of the head. With this turn of events local and state police from Texas and Arkansas began an all out effort to gain leads on the murders including interviewing patrons and employees of the near-by Dallas Club and posting a $500 reward for leads. Both of these efforts proved fruitless, only producing false leads and dead-ends. Saturday, April 13 Betty Jo Booker and Paul Martin left the local VFW hall at West Fourth and Oak Street after Betty Jo finished playing with her band at the hall. By 6:30 am the next morning Paul’s body was found on North Park Road, he had been shot 4 times. At 11:30 am Betty Jo’s remains were found almost two miles away, she had been shot twice. At this point local law enforcement were joined by famed Texas Ranger Captain Manuel “El Lobo Solo” Gonzaullas (who’s story is fascinating and worth your time to discover). Panic and wild rumors had fully set in at this point as the normally quiet community tried to process the fact that a killer walked among them, leading to confusion and in the words of Gonzallas “a hindrance to the investigation and harmful to innocent persons.” The evening of Friday, May 3rd local farmer Virgil Starks and his wife Katie were in their home off Highway 67 East when two shots came through the living room window, killing Virgil in his armchair. Katie was able to call law enforcement before two more shots rang through the same window Officers search for clues to the latest murder on Morris Lane in Texarkana, striking her twice in the face and head. Katie, despite being shot twice, managed to Poster for the 1976 film Texas. (Photo from Texarkana Daily News) run to a neighbor’s home who was able to take her to Michael Meagher Hospital (now “The Town That Dreaded Sundown Miller County Health Unit) for life saving medical care. A full scale manhunt quickly followed that included local law enforcement, Captain Gonzaullas and dog teams from the Arkansas State Police. By this point the reward fund had reached $7,025 (well over $100,000 adjusted for inflation in 2021), and over 40 officers in the hunt for the killer. No further attacks were attributed to The Phantom, and investigations, interviews and leads produced many suspects, however the identity of the killer is still unknown to this day. The Town That Dreaded Midnight: 1976 Thirty years later regional film maker, Charles B. Pierce, who had come to fame with his 1972 film “The Legend of Boggy Creek” (a must watch cult classic itself) turned his lens to the story in his film The Town That Dreaded Midnight. Pierce, as a child, remembered the fear he felt hearing of the stories about the killings and captured that fear in the film. At the time Pierce came under criticism for his graphic depiction of violence, however this on-screen violence perpetrated by a nameless, masked killer set the stage for the blockbuster slasher films that exploded onto the American film scene in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, and continues to this day in new films like Malignant and in series like American Horror Story.
