The Believer and The law- romans 7:1-2
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? What do we answer those who would put us back under the Law, for whom the LORD Jesus has paid the debt, and redeemed and justified by His death? Paul doesn’t mince words, or look for a ground of compromise with the legalizers. ‘Know ye not, brethren...’ is a strong reprimand to not even give any consideration to being drawn back under the Law, either as a means of salvation or for maintaining it. Yes, until Christ came and paid the debt, God’s elect were debtors to the Law, and thereby condemned, because it demands PERFECTION. But even as in the world, laws only apply to the living, and once dead, are no longer under them, so God’s elect, for whom Christ died. When He died to satisfy God’s Law and Justice, those for whom He paid the ransom died in Him, and therefore, are forever FREE from the Law. 2 For the woman which hath a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. In biblical marriage, there is a legal obligation between husband and wife so long as they both shall live. However, if there is a death of the one, then the other is no longer under obligation to the one who is dead. At the cross, the LAW being satisfied by Christ is thereby pronounced DEAD by God Himself. What then of God’s children who were to that point obligated to the Law. They are LOOSED [discharged completely]! Redemption full and free is God’s grace to those sinners for whom Christ paid the debt.
