Margaret George Huckabay 1948-2021

Margaret George Huckabay of Shreveport, LA, was a remarkable and angelic presence on earth, whose mission in this realm was suddenly completed on March 14, 2021. A beloved wife, mother, sister-in-law and friend, Margaret radiated unconditional love, joy and uplifting support to everyone she knew. Born on April 1, 1948, in Kissimmee, FL, Margaret was the only child of William George and Betty Periner George. She grew up in Tampa and Orlando, and spent her teenage years in New Smyrna Beach, where she was an honor student, cheerleader and editor of her high school newspaper. She received her BA in early childhood development in 1970 from Florida State University and later pursued graduate studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Career opportunities drew her to northwest Louisiana in 1978, spending time in Shreveport and Natchitoches before settling in Shreveport in 1979. She married the love of her life, James “Jim” T. Huckabay Jr. on August 1, 1981. Joining her husband’s design and advertising business that same year, Margaret excelled in client relations and human resources, providing a warm and welcoming smile to everyone. The family welcomed the birth of daughter Amy Elizabeth Huckabay on October 16, 1985. When Amy was born with multiple developmental challenges, Margaret passionately embraced her new career path of advocating and forging the highest quality of life options for this special being. Margaret’s approach was to consider all factors and above all celebrate the efforts of everyone, from administrators to caregivers. After completing public school in 2003, Amy became a full-time resident of Holy Angels in Shreveport, and thrives there to this day. Margaret was deeply committed to the important work of Holy Angels. Margaret celebrated many spiritual traditions and paths. Her approach to life, built on her vision of world service and the belief that we are all connected, empowered her efforts and energies. Margaret’s gift of compassion, humility and loving presence brought light as she attended to the emotional and spiritual needs of everyone she encountered. Although she was a trained spiritual director, she called herself a spiritual companion because she believed that we are all teachers and learners. Early in their marriage, Margaret and Jim were local coordinators for the Emissaries of Divine Light, a community that provided her with inspiration throughout her life. She was active in Pathways of Light, attended the 1993 interfaith gathering of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, served as a lay minister at Grace Community, a United Methodist Congregation, and was on the Holy Angels Spiritual Advisory Committee. Margaret celebrated life and the good in everyone with her generous heart, playful spirit, and delightful gifts and cards. Reassuring, uplifting and enlightening, Margaret beamed joy in seeing others’ successes and relished in their accomplishments. As a spiritual companion and friend, Margaret touched many hearts with her soft-spoken guidance, calming influence, and sweet smile and laughter. She had an intuitive sense to reach out to people she loved (and there were many!) with the right message at just the right time. A deeply empathic listener, Margaret brought comfort, hope and encouragement during life’s challenges, infusing those moments with her well-known “Love Surround!” Margaret rejoiced in the beauty of nature, music and art, delighting in her husband Jim’s talents. For almost two decades they shared a retreat in the Ouachita mountains near Mena, AR. In addition to Jim and Amy, Margaret is survived by sister-in-law Nancy Huckabay Dodd of Marshall, TX, cousins in Florida, and a host of friends too numerous to mention. She had openheartedly embraced Jim’s father and many aunts, uncles and cousins on both the Jones and Huckabay sides of his family.

Margaret was the best angel we knew who walked on earth. We’re comforted in knowing that the angels in heaven now have a mentor. A celebration of her purpose-filled life will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at Grace Community, 9400 Ellerbe Rd. in Shreveport. Social distancing and mask wearing will be observed. The family suggests that donations be made to Holy Angels, 10450 Ellerbe Rd., Shreveport, LA 71106 (www.holyangels.org) or to the Emissaries, 100 Sunrise Ranch Rd., Loveland, CO 80537 (www.emissaries.org). But By The Grace of God

“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” I Corinthians 15:10 1. All that the child of God is, is but by the grace of God. No aspect of our person, standing, or experience can be attributed to anything in us, but entirely due to the unmerited, undeserved favor of God in Christ. Every aspect of salvation, our election, redemption, justification, adoption, sanctification, regeneration, and final glory is the gift of God’s grace. It is such grace of God in Christ that gives the child of God a sure and good hope of glory. 2. The grace of God is effectual grace. “and his grace which was bestowed on me was not in vain.” When God, by grace, raises up men to preach the Gospel, the very gifts of grace, and the experience of salvation by grace, are what qualify them for the very preaching of the Gospel of grace in Christ. Every purpose, will, and gift of God in grace has its intended end, and it is never in vain. 3. The grace of God energizes. “but I laboured more abundantly than they all.” Opponents of the grace of God like to argue that preaching grace alone makes hearers lazy. They are misguided in thinking that preaching up works is the way to motivate. However, any work that is not initiated or maintained by the grace of God in Christ is vain and to be condemned.
