But By the Grace of God
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” I Corinthians 15:10 1. All that the child of God is, is but by the grace of God. No aspect of our person, standing, or experience can be attributed to anything in us, but entirely due to the unmerited, undeserved favor of God in Christ. Every aspect of salvation, our election, redemption, justification, adoption, sanctification, regeneration, and final glory is the gift of God’s grace. It is such grace of God in Christ that gives the child of God a sure and good hope of glory. 2. The grace of God is effectual grace. “and his grace which was bestowed on me was not in vain.” When God, by grace, raises up men to preach the Gospel, the very gifts of grace, and the experience of salvation by grace, are what qualify them for the very preaching of the Gospel of grace in Christ. Every purpose, will, and gift of God in grace has its intended end, and it is never in vain. 3. The grace of God energizes. “but I laboured more abundantly than they all.” Opponents of the grace of God like to argue that preaching grace alone makes hearers lazy. They are misguided in thinking that preaching up works is the way to motivate. However, any work that is not initiated or maintained by the grace of God in Christ is vain and to be condemned. Artini celebrates various forms of creative expression and encompasses the culinary, musical, and visual arts. The excitement about ARTini 2021 is “popping” up everywhere! Join the Bossier Arts Council this year as they take on a brand new venue and a brand new theme. BAC will shake in a little imagination, stir in a lot of creativity, and mix in some friendly competition. This years event will feature: The art of Lauren Ross Simmons - Winner of SB Magazine’s 2018 Best Artist and three time award winning Revel artist, Lauren is a local pop artist and business woman. Besides being the mother to Hudson, the cutest boy ever born, and the wife to a handsome picker, she is a PROUD Louisiana born artist, and Shreveport resident. She taught theatre for 17 years, traveled with the circus and Hello Kitty, treated her eyes to incredible beauty all around the globe, and has now gone back to her “roots” – the South and her art. She is addicted to pop culture, fashion and COLOR. What’s better than those three things? Those three things blended together to create a recognizable style that separates her from other artists. Gorgeous textiles and “girlie” flowers are combined with edgy pop stars and icons to create true conversation focal points. Her inspirations are pop kings such as Warhol and Lichtenstein. Her mix of iconic figures of the past and present with fashions and styles of now on large canvases is simply candy for the eyes! Music by- What the Funk? (WTF?!) is a versatile group of talented and professional musicians based in Shreveport, LA who’s always down to get the party started. “The Name You Know - The News You Need”
Hurricane season is upon us
prepared
so be
The Atlantic hurricane season has begun and lasts through the end of November. Hurricanes can be devastating, with high winds, heavy rain, potential flooding inland and on the coast, and storm surges. If you live in an area affected by hurricanes, it’s important to have a plan in place should one strike. Even if you don’t live near a coast, be sure to look at FEMA’s hazard info maps and familiarize yourself with your area’s risks, as hurricanes can cause effects seen hundreds of miles inland. Here are the most important ways you can prepare for hurricanes:
1. Know your evacuation route
Hurricanes often come with several days of warning as the storms form over the ocean and then move toward land. Get to know your evacuation zone and the best route out, so if the call for evacuation is made, you’ll know
what to do. Choose a place inland to go should you need to evacuate, whether it’s with relatives, friends, or even a hotel. If it looks like a hurricane is heading your way, make sure to keep up with local news, so you’ll know when you need to evacuate. Planning for evacuation is important, but sometimes it is not an option. Therefore, you should also familiarize yourself with shelter-in-place options in your area. These could be local FEMA safe rooms or other storm shelters. If it’s not possible for you to evacuate or get to a designated storm shelter, it’s best to stay in an interior room away from any windows. Once you have a plan, write it down and make sure everybody in your household has a copy that they can follow. Remember to include all necessary contact information for
emergency management offices, law enforcement, public safety/fire rescue, local hospitals, utilities, American Red Cross, and your property insurance agent.
2. Gather non-perishable supplies
It’s impossible to know
what infrastructure will be down after a hurricane. Power is often the first to be knocked out, leaving many without access to light or important information. Make sure you’re always prepared with enough non-perishable food, water, medication, and backup light and power to last at least three days. And don’t forget food for your pets. In addition to food and water, your emergency hurricane kit should include a first aid kit, any prescription medications you might need, a light source such as solar lantern, flashlight, candles and matches that you can keep dry, backup power including solar phone charger and, batteries, Hand crank radio tuned to weather information, moist towelettes and garbage bags
for personal sanitation, local road maps, whistle to signal for help, cash, and tool kit complete with wrench, pliers, etc.
3. Make sure you’re covered
Check your home and car insurance policies and ensure they include flood protection. Back up your electronics and make sure your important documents are password-protected. Keep print copies of important documents and place in your hurricane kit. Prepare your home for a hurricane by cleaning out gutters, checking the plumbing to prevent backups, and install storm shutters on your windows. You should also move your car to a sheltered location and cut away weak branches and trees. Once the storm has passed, it’s still important to be aware of potential safety risks during cleanup. Be sure to listen to authorities for
more information and special instructions. When cleaning up your home, wear protective clothing and work with someone else. Don’t touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Be sure to turn off the electricity at the main breaker or fuse box to prevent electric shock. Flood water sometimes has dangerous debris in it. Avoid wading in it. Underground electrical lines or downed power lines in flood water can also present an electrical danger. Use text messages or social media to communicate with others as phone systems might be down after the storm. And finally, document any property damage with detailed descriptions and photographs. Contact your insurance agent for recovery help. For more information about preparing for hurricane season, check out ready. gov/hurricanes.
The American Flag: A symbol of VA to re-adjudicate freedom for a fledgling nation Veteran and survivor When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, the colonists weren’t fighting united under a single flag. Instead, most regiments participating in the war for independence against the British fought under their own flags. However, all that changed when in June of 1775 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to create the Continental Army—a unified colonial fighting force—with the hopes of more organized battle against its colonial oppressors. This led to the creation of what was the first American flag, a symbol of freedom for a fledgling nation. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” Over 100 years later, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.
As you celebrate the anniversary of the Stars and Stripes, here are some facts about “Old Glory.” Bernard Cigrand, a smalltown Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated across the country every June 14, in 1885. That year, he led his school in the first formal
observance of the holiday. It is widely believed that Betsy Ross, who assisted the Revolutionary War effort by repairing uniforms and sewing tents, made and helped design the first American flag. However, there is no historical evidence that she contributed to Old Glory’s creation. The lyrics of “The StarSpangled Banner,” America’s national anthem since 1931, are taken from a patriotic poem written by Francis Scott
Key after he witnessed the Battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. In the 1950s, when it seemed certain that Alaska would be admitted to the Union, designers began retooling the American flag to add a 49th star to the existing 48. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old Ohio student named Bob Heft borrowed his mother’s sewing machine, disassembled his family’s 48-star flag and stitched on 50 stars in a proportional pattern. He handed in his creation to his history teacher for a class project, explaining that he expected Hawaii would soon achieve statehood as well. Heft also sent the flag to his congressman, Walter Moeller, who presented it to President Eisenhower after both new states joined the Union. Eisenhower selected Heft’s design, and on July 4, 1960, the president and the high school student stood together as the 50-star flag was raised for the first time. Heft’s
teacher promptly changed his grade from a B- to an A. And now for some flag etiquette. When flags are taken down from their poles, care must be taken to keep them from touching the ground. American flags should be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display at night. When the flags of cities, states, localities or groups are flown on the same staff as the American flag, Old Glory should always be at the peak. Ever wondered how to correctly fold an American flag? First, enlist a partner and stand facing each other, each holding both corners of one of the rectangle’s shorter sides. Working together, lift the half of the flag that usually hangs on the bottom over the half that contains the blue field of stars. Next, fold the flag lengthwise a second time so that the stars are visible on the outside. Make a triangular fold at the striped end, bringing one corner up to meet the top edge. Continue to fold the flag in this manner until only a rectangle of star-studded blue can be seen.

claims for possible herbicide exposure
Veterans who were previously denied service connection for an herbicide related presumptive condition due to lack of in-country Vietnam service will have their claims automatically re-adjudicated by VA. The department began readjudicating claims in April for Veterans who served in the offshore waters of the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War but were denied for one or more herbicide related conditions, on the basis that military service was not performed on the landmass of the Republic of Vietnam or on its inland waterways. “Re-adjudication means VA will review the evidence of record and provide replacement decisions in the cases of Veterans who were previously denied service connection benefits,” said Acting VA Under Secretary for Benefits Thomas Murphy. “We have the proper resources in place to meet the needs of our Veteran community and will ensure all eligible Veterans’ and their survivors’ claims are examined thorough-
ly and fairly.” The review also applies to eligible survivors of deceased Vietnam-era Veterans and is part of the Veterans Benefits Administration’s implementation of the Nov. 5, 2020, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California order in Nehmer vs. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, requiring VA to readjudicate previously denied claims. VA will determine if benefits for qualifying disabilities can now be paid retroactively to the date of previously denied claims. The court’s decision requires automatic readjudication in such cases without requiring a new claim, and potentially paying benefits to the survivors or estates of deceased beneficiaries. More information is available regarding VA disability benefits based on Agent Orange exposure. NSU alumna pens debut novel

Northwestern State University alumna Emily Myers first recognized her love for reading and writing while in the seventh grade at Converse High School in Sabine Parish. She knew her dream of becoming a published author was lofty and came with an uncertain future. Still, she chose to continue her studies in English at NSU, graduating in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Professional Writing, and a minor in Mass Communications. Myers credits her time at Northwestern as pivotal in her writing development. “Every time I write I think about Dr. [Shane] Rasmussen’s literature classes and the critical thinking skills he taught me,” she said. “He pushes all his students to think deeply and engage with texts in a unique way. I was sure to take a class with Dr. Rasmussen almost every semester of my undergraduate studies because his classes were always challenging, enlightening, and truly impactful.” Despite Myers’ love and talent for writing, she found herself on a different path after college graduation. She put her dream on hold to pursue a stable career. Yet, as she began her career as a high school English teacher in Rapides Parish, her path toward certainty and stability was shat-
tered when her father was diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung Cancer. He passed away after a year and a half battle with the disease. Myers says losing her father was the catalyst that pushed her to focus on her dream now, rather than later. “He was so young when he passed, only 53. I started look-
ing at my life as if it would end when I turned 53. I no longer felt safe in putting off my dream. I had to do it now and that’s exactly what I’ve done.” Myers has dedicated the past 2-1/2 years to finding her niche in the publishing industry and preparing her first novel to self-publish. “It has been a long and bumpy journey, but I’ve finally found my place in this incredibly vast industry. And the more I write, the more I find my voice,” she said.
Myers’ debut novel, “The Truth About Unspeakable Things,” is a Women’s Fiction/ Romance novel that follows a sexual assault survivor on her journey toward recovery. The emotional, and, at times uncomfortable aspects of the book are balanced with budding romance and unpredictable suspense. Her novel challenges standard genre norms and blends emotion, moral dilemmas, romance, suspense, family drama and action into one moving read. Myers put her degree in English to good use while writing her debut novel. “At Northwestern, I was blessed with knowledgeable teachers, like Dr. Rasmussen, who pushed me to analyze literature in a deep and critical way. It is that same critical thinking I bring to my fiction writing. “The Truth About Unspeakable Things” is an entertaining read littered with thought-provoking messages that can really resonate with readers.” “The Truth About Unspeakable Things” is available for purchase now on Amazon and through Barnes and Noble’s website in both eBook and paperback forms. To learn more about Myers, her book and her journey to publication, visit www.emilyamyers.com or find her on Facebook and Instagram @ emilymyersauthor.

Army Veteran Robert Kassin was on his second tour of duty when on July 16, 2006, he died from enemy fire at Larzab base in Zabul province. He was a soldier with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Polk, Louisiana. In that moment that he gave his life for his friends, his unit, and his country, he left behind wife, Judy, one son, Joseph, and two step daughters, Kayla and Cameron, along with numerous friends and family. At 29, he was the oldest and only son of Robert Joseph and Lucia Kassin. Kassin’s father said his son had planned to make the military his career. He had volunteered for duty in Afghanistan and re-enlisted a few weeks after arriving. His father went on to say that his son was helping rebuild communities in Afghanistan. By the early morning of July 17, 2006 all that

Army Veteran Robert Kassin remained were the shattered and uncertain future of his family. The Gold Star Registry wrote that family and friends gathered at the Highland Baptist Church in Clovis, New Mexico, to mourn his death. His mother, Lucia, said “he always brought home strays in the form of new friends or small animals. By joining the military, he wanted to take care of more than that.” His friends remembered his favorite thing was laughter—of any kind. Highland Baptist minister Dean Turaville reflected, “it’s different when you see war casualties on TV. Until you bury a child you don’t know. It’s different when hurt has a name.” Carey Kassin, Robert’s first wife said of their 6-year- old son. “I see him every day when I look at our son; he tells me, I’m so proud of my dad.” Kassin is buried in Coushatta, Louisiana.
