“The Name You Know - The News You Need”

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. You, my brothers and sisters,

were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one

command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Galatians 5:1, 13-15 (NIV)

Zwolle-Ebarb VFW raise the Stars and Stripes Post 5187 members Zwolle-Ebarb VFW Post 5187 members raise the red, white and blue in the middle of the Freedom Circle located along Highway 171 in Zwolle in honor of Flag Day June 14. Scores of Sabine Parish men and women showed up to celebrate the anniversary of the Stars and Stripes and to honor those who have served and are serving in our nation’s Armed Forces to preserve our freedoms. The Freedom Circle, which was dedicated on Veterans Day in Nov. 2020, is comprised of 50 flags to represent the entire United States of America. Waving the American Flag is also a favorite summertime pastime on Independence Day --July 4-- which commemorates approval of the Declaration of Independence by the 2nd Continental Congress of the United States.

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council is showcasing the contributions of African-American cowboys to the Trail Riding culture of Northwest Louisiana in two spectacular exhibitions. LOUISIANA TRAIL RIDERS, an exhibition of powerful black and white photographic images by Louisiana State University Art professor Jeremiah Ariaz, documents the little-known, deep-rooted Africa-American trail riding tradition born of generations of working farms and raising cattle in Creole Louisiana. Opening alongside Louisiana Trail Riders is SADDLES AND SPURS “Out of the Shadows,” featuring the story of the trail riding culture of Northwest Louisiana. Starched shirts, saddles, belt buckles, boots, and memorabilia of the almost 75 Black trail riding clubs that make up the Bayou State and Northwest Louisiana Trail Riders Association are on display upstairs in CoolSpace. Both exhibitions open Saturday, June 12, noon to 6:00 p.m. in artspace, 708 Texas St. In downtown Shreveport. Ariaz’s photography captures the bonds between human and horse—the easy comfortable stride as a father hands down a legacy to his son in the

RIDERS photography in an effort to show the undeniable contributions and disclose the lesserknown history of the African-American cowboys and the Black Trail Riders of Northwest Louisiana to our larger community. “African-American cowboys are underrepresented in popular accounts of the West. Throughout history, the iconic lifestyle of the cowboy has been glamorized in countless books, movies and television shows, and although African-American cowboys don’t play a part in the popular narrative, historians estimate that one in four cowboys in the West was Black.” According to Kathe Hambrick of the West Baton Rouge Museum, the word “cowboy” is actually a same saddle; the intense sullen stare of the trail boss at the front of the pack; the hotly self-assured term used to describe the Black men who were going West. As the skill of these Black men, who were not young cowgirl astride her steed, one hand on her given the dignity of being called “men” or “hands,” hip and the other on the saddle; the cocky slouch of a teenage boy in the saddle with his little brother was noticed by the White cowhands, they started calling them “Cow Boys.” The term actually refers to sulking below. This is not barrel racing or bull those first Black men going West and the skill that riding—no “showdeo” to see here--only poignant was handed down to them from the legacy of their photographs depicting a deep Black culture born grandfathers who knew how to take care of horses of several generations of man and horse working and to ride horses. It was something that came with together that much of this country doesn’t even them from Africa and was passed down. know exists. Ariaz says, “Getting to know the Louisiana trail LIVE MUSIC & TEXAS SWING FRIENDS NIGHT riders has radically shifted my sense of how a Saturday, July 15, @ artspace, cowboy is defined. I’ve learned that the Black 708 Texas St. In downtown Shreveport equestrian culture stems from a time when the Louisiana Territory was, in fact, the American ALL WESTERN PARADE & BLOCK PARTY West. My photographs assert a counter narrative Saturday, July 24, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. @ artspace, to the depictions of the violence that surrounds 708 Texas St. In downtown Shreveport Black lives in recent months.

Galatians 5:1, 13-15 (NIV)

unveiled at Trinity Baptist Church in Natchitoches “Faith,” a contemporary monumental sculpture located in front of Trinity Baptist Church on Howard Street in Natchitoches is unveiled last month. Created by James Border, a local sculpture and former visiting art professor at NSU, the monument pays tribute to his late wife Lisa, a longtime member of Trinity Baptist, who lost her life to cancer in 2018. As the accompanying plaque says, it also honors James’ mother Avis Borders Fletcher and Lisa’s mother Margaret Pauline Chesser, who both passed away in 2020. Additionally, a scholarship has been established in Lisa’s name for students majoring in art at NSU.

Sabine Parish superintedent Dr. Sara Ebarb announces end of year retirement After much prayer, deliberation, discussion with my husband and family, I have decided to retire December 31, 2021. My husband is retiring, again, June 30, and he wants me to retire with him. The Lord has blessed me with a long and successful career. There have been some very difficult and challenging times, but most of the time, it has been my joy to be an educator in every capacity in which I have served. I thank the Caddo Parish School Board for the 28 years I served there. I learned so much that served me well as a superintendent. Caddo gave me opportunities to grow and develop professionally and afforded me the opportunity to learn from the very best mentors, Albert Hardison, Ollie Tyler and so many others. I made so many friends in Caddo and am forever grateful for my time there. It is my strong desire to express to the Sabine Parish School Board, Central Staff, Administration and School Staff that it has been the greatest honor of my career to serve as your superintendent. I am so grateful to have been granted this blessed opportunity for

10 years. I have worked with the best board presidents, Buddy Veuleman, Randy Martin, and Terrell Snelling and each one has been

our students and staff and they want Sabine to achieve academically as well as athletically, and in all other extracurricular opportuni-

great teachers, and wonderful students! Our parish will continue to do well because the people will do well. I will pray for the next leader and their

In response to Dr Ebarb’s statement, Mr. Terrell Snelling, President of the Sabine Parish School Board, commented, “On behalf of our school board, I sincerely wish Dr. Ebarb a happy and well-deserved retirement. She has served Sabine Parish well and we will all hate to see her go. We thank her for her dedication to children, staff, and our community!”

supportive and always on the side of what is good and right for our students. The board has a heart for

ties. Our board is so proud of their schools and communities, and this is paramount for our parish. I am very grateful! Thank you! I have every confidence that Sabine will continue to be a great district, in spite of obstacles that will come. Sabine has great employees, a fine central staff, excellent administrators,

success, and I thank all staff for their fine work. I want to thank Sabine Parish for every kindness and support shown to me and to our district, and I want to especially thank Dave Davis at Homeland Security, the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney, Don Burkett, and his staff, the office of Judge Stephen Beasley, the Police Jury, MPD and Town Council, ZPD and Town Council, local Mayors and local PD’s, Sabine Medical Center, local churches, local businesses “This institution is an equal opportunity

provider and employer.” and other community organizations who work closely with and support our schools. Our schools are dependent on their communities and schools are supported in Sabine Parish. I have always had the best secretaries, and I want to thank Mrs. Barbara Allen (retired), Mrs. Janet Elam (retired) and Mrs. Tammy Luster. They are the most wonderful ladies, and I am blessed to have had them in my life. Finally, I thank my family for supporting me and putting up with me over the last 10 years. Their love and prayers have sustained me. I am so blessed to have been able to watch my nieces and nephews grow up in our schools. I thank the Lord for his guidance, care, and blessings beyond measure! I pray the Lord’s continued blessings on the Sabine Parish School District. It is my desire, and in the best interest of the district, that the board take steps to hire a superintendent in the fall, so we have some time to work together and have a seamless transition. May the Lord bless you all! Thank you!

St. John the Baptist Church in Many commemorates 150 years of service to residents and visitors St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Many is 150 years old and a celebration to kick off the momentous occasion took place June 27 with a Holy Rosary, Mass of Thanksgiving, and luncheon. Several church artifacts were also on display for viewing. Some 500 folks attended the special events. Honored guests for the occasion were Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States and Bishop Francis Malone of the Diocese of Shreveport. According to the Archives at the Congregation of the Divine Providence in San Antonio, Texas, the earliest Catholic settlers of the Many area arrived in the late 1830’s. At this time, the nearest Catholic

chapel was located some 20 miles away on Bayou Scie. From 1865 to 1870, the Catholic community at Many was served by a mission priest, Father John Francis Le Vezuet, from Natchitoches. Because there was no church, the priest had to say Mass in private homes. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church was established in 1871 when Rev. J.A. Aubree and parishioners built the first church building. Sadly, a fire destroyed the original frame church in 1922, however, with the help of the Catholic Extension Society, a new church building was constructed. The architecture of the new church was early Spanish design in keeping with the

tradition of the Franciscan Fathers who served Sabine Parish as missionaries in the early seventeenth century. This early Spanish design has been retained to this date despite remodeling in the 1950s and inside renovations in the 1990s. Father Francis Ngumi Kamau is the church’s current pastor. The church has additional celebratory events planned to include a summer speaker series beginning July 7, a Bass fishing tournament on Sept. 4, St. John’s School reunion on Oct. 9 and All Souls Day outdoor Mass on Nov. 2. Visit the church’s website at https://stjohnmany.org/anniversar or call the church at 318/256-5680 for more information.
